I truly love Gen and it is such a neighborhood staple for us! We bring everyone that visits us here to enjoy their fresh sushi and appetizers. That being said - I very very very much miss the mushroom curry that was taken off the menu :( the vegetable curry is good but the mushroom curry is something that I still dream about constantly and was devastated when it was removed! Again we love Gen and would highly recommend to anyone!

I’m very pleased with the inventive new menu at Gen! The smaller dishes — you could call them Japanese tapas — are creative and delicious. The Mini Ochazuke bowl features small pieces of sushi fish over rice and is a great value. The Crab Bomber is a delightful pairing of warm, crunchy rice and the rich taste of crab. Another standout is the Seafood Salad — a fresh mix of sushi and greens with a Japanese toasted sesame vinaigrette that complements the fish perfectly. Usually, I reach for soy sauce, but this was a refreshing twist on an old favorite.

My wife and I have lived in the neighborhood for years and this was our first time trying Gen. We had a wonderful time. The karage was amazing and the sushi was so fresh. Best part? We asked to take some of our mains home with us, we open the bag and there’s a surprise can of the Sake we ordered during our meal. Incredible experience, incredible staff. Can’t wait to come back for some more delicious Japanese food. gochisousama deshita!

Small, really cute place to have amazing Japanese food. All the dishes were delicious, made with fresh ingredients, from the kara-age to the rolls. The waiter was really kind and attentive too. I highly recommend this place if you want to have a great Japanese experience

Gen is authentic, serving very high quality food. Terrific sake and specialty beer list. The service is great and the vibe is comfortable and unfussy. Oh, and they have the best japanese curry in Brooklyn!

This is my daughter’s favorite spot for Japanese food in Brooklyn. The food here is consistent. We have been coming to Gen for over 10 years but I just decided to take photos for a review now. If you look for a spot for a Japanese brunch on the weekends, give them a try!

The food at Gen is excellent. The udon is delicious and the sushi is killer. Worth the visit if you’re in the area. Can’t wait to sit outside now that the weather is nice.

Super fun, small authentic Japanese place. Tons of options. I had the vegetarian dashi with udon and the vegetable tempura roll. When I say the soup was full bodied and the tempura had such a strong umami flavor I cannot emphasize how uniquely well done these basics were. The service was Lightning fast, and the servers were so good humored and accommodating. I asked for a dark beer and they recommended a beer described as chocolatey that was so perfectly what I wanted. I also had the green tea iced cream which was light and not bitter. We went in without a reservation but the staff let us have a table as soon as one opened up. We stayed slightly past closing, but didn’t feel rushed and absolutely enjoyed hearing the staff enjoying each others company. Seems like they are passionate about this place. Pictured: the udon I absolutely destroyed, the beer I had and the green tea ice cream.

The Godzilla roll is the best sushi I’ve ever had. The eel on top of the roll is the best fish I’ve ever had. Delicious dumplings. Friendly service. Excellent food. I’ll tell my friends about this place.

We are so in love with Gen we have to stop ourselves from going every night. It is the coziest place with some of the most flavorful food I’ve ever had. The uni don (eel) is mouthwatering, spectacular, and we get it every time. The rolls are hearty and well-priced, and the small omakase is lovely too. Our server is fantastic (I think her name is Yuki, apologies if not), she helped us navigate the drinks menu and was so kind. I loved the “marshmallow notes” sake, we loved the ale too. One of the best places in Brooklyn.

Incredible fresh fish! We ordered the Omakase and it did not disappoint. Every fish was yummy. We also had miso and edamame as starters. Their sale selection excellent as well. The ambiance is very cute and intimate. Great service! We had an excellent experience overall. Perfect for a date or small group.

Probably the best sushi in the neighborhood, although Silver Rice is awesome; Gen does a different thing though, with lots of daily specials, inventive combos, and fresh chef touches. Good sake and beer menu. Weathered outside begets cozy and intimate seating inside - interesting corner space. For its small size, punches way above its weight. Nice service. Good value with price options for all kinds of folks. Tasty. Gets crowded on peak times on weekends.

This was our first time here, waiter was very attentive, friendly and thoughtful. They have weekend lunch special and Tuesday happy hour bottomless sake for $25. We ordered udon, sushi omasake, ramen from lunch special menu. But the dishes on their regular menu seem more home cooking and not greasy at all. Waiter gave us free gobo dish because the fried chicken was taking a bit longer to cook. Cozy down to earth food and authentic as well. Definitely would come back again. They also have Sake tasting on weekdays.

When It comes to this place, I would stick to the hand rolls. I can’t speak on the meany other cuisines this place offers, but I can’t speak say that out of the sushi I would avoid sashimi or raw fish. I had three of the specialty rolls, one tuna, one salmon and shrimp, and one eel and shrimp tempura. The tuna was boring and flavorless, the salmon and shrimp was pretty good and the shrimp tempura was fantastic. The sashimi was flavorless. Stay away from the iced teas or smoothies. I made the mistake of ordering the Thai Iced tea. This restaurant was pretty good though I ate those handrolls UPPPP. Great deals.

One of the better spots for fresh fish in the neighborhood. The menu is slimmed down due to COVID right now, but they have ample outdoor seating with rotating fans. Sushi melts in your mouth. Highly recommend the affordable omakase.

This place is like you are home, waitress is nice but their plates are not that clean and everything looks old, but they have fresh mashed wasabi, traditional ingredients that you hardly find from other restaurants. You should always try their $18 traditional breakfast set. It's really good!!

We ate at Gen about two years ago and it was just ok. Since we moved to the neighborhood recently we thought we’d give it another shot, and we were even more disappointed. I would love to give Gen the benefit of the doubt and assume that they were just having an off night but not sure I can stomach it. First of all, the Miso soup was obviously instant soup and not even a good version. We ordered 5 rolls and they ranged from flavorless (snow crab California) to sloppily cut (hamachi scallion) to insanely salty (Ume Shisho) to incredibly “meh” (Saba Gari). So surprised it gets such good reviews - what am I missing?

Visit 1: Ordered take out sushi rolls which were decent, but a little pricey for what you actually receive. Visit 2: Ordered take out again. Extremely sub par sushi, some pieces had the smallest slivers of salmon and tuna possible.

I ordered a few rolls and a platter and I wish I hadn’t bothered. The sushi came out late even though the place was practically empty at 6:15 pm and the rolls were poorly made (cut to uneven sizes, avocado inside was black, rice crumbling apart). The yellowtail was very slimy. Waitress did not seem to know much about their sake menu and could not answer a basic question. A hot mess.

My allergies were not taken seriously. Staff knowingly watch me eat a meal that was contaminated with my indicated allergy. I alerted them when ordering. The waitress acknowledged and even circled back if it’s ok my partner had that ingredient - how nice. However, my meal still came out with the ingredient I’m allergic to. I politely asked if this was a mistake and they apologized asking if I wanted it simply removed or remade - I said remade. This is where it gets infuriating: Instead of actually remaking it because it’s close to closing time; they just removed the allergen and put the remaining food onto a new plate with something to replace the allergen. And kept it in the back for however long to seem like they were remaking it.. Replating is not remaking it. After had eaten a small portion of the meal, I confronted them that it’s not actually remade. They admitted to it with whatever they felt was their justification - time, ingredients, efforts, etc. etc… it was just the gen don - rice, sashimi, and tempura. At my own judgment, I still picked at it, I didn’t finish the meal. Hoped for the best. Was able to walk out fine and still polite but later increasingly felt the effects. I can forgive unintentional accidents - although it shouldn’t happen in the food industry with allergens. But what really is unacceptable and dangerous is that they literally watched me be poisoned to cover their mistake. Also, the sashimi isn’t fresh.
