I had an epic birthday dinner last night. My best friend took me there as a surprise. Chef was so amiable and the food excellent. Was so full and happy with the 19-course menu. I love the local laid back atmosphere. Will come back!

Justin Yu

Wow! What a great expansion for Yamashiro - this side is new (4-weeks old as of posting this) and it might be one of the best omakase experiences in NYC. My friend and I did the 19-course meal for $108, and each course was a hit. Fresh, balanced, and well conceived. It was amazing to watching Chef Jimmy work and explain each dish. On one hand, I’m worried this place is going to blow up and become impossible to get into, but on the other, I’m not one to gate-keep and they deserve to be discovered! Thank you Kelly, Jay, and Chef Jimmy for such an amazing experience - can’t wait to come back!

C
Clove Lee

The most delicious, mind blowing omakase I have ever been to. Jimmy was our chef, and he was so skilled with the knife and knowledgeable about such minute details. He was kind enough to explain each course to us down to the exact species of fish, the cut, the temperature, and how every ingredient is made complement the flavors! He apparently studied under a master for 5 years in Japan before coming here and WOW does it shine through in his work. Wait staff was also impeccable – she was so attentive to every need, and so quietly professional. You can tell both of them have such passion. My favorites in our 16 course was the soromoro appetizer, otoro seared by oak charcoal, kinmedai, and the uni; but the courses change based off the season and the fish purchased fresh. The price is very reasonable as well for the amazing quality we received. Very very much recommend.

We had such a great experience at this omakase spot !! Would highly recommend going there if you’re looking for high quality fish in a welcoming atmosphere ! The flavors are outstanding & everything tasted super fresh.

It’s the memory you’re going to make here that elevates their omakase to the top. From personalized catering, ingenuously creative dishes and extravagant value - well there’s a reason Yamashiro has been around for over a decade. Their standout Chawanmushi deserves its own recognition for its depth and breadth. Trust me - you’ll be sleeping like a baby tonight

This was an incredible experience. The chef was amazing !!!! Music and staff were great. The 19 course omasake was a 1000/10 experience. Such as a variety of flavors and beautiful presentation. Each meal kept getting better and better. So out of this world. Cannot wait to come back!

L

Loved their new Omakase experience! Chef was friendly and highly skilled. Tailored the meal to our taste. Everything was impecable from the flavors to the plates! Really appreciated the creativity of the chef serving us a wide variety of flavors including otoro topped with foie gras! Stunning!

An unforgettable omakase that redefines sushi—delicate, decadent, and expertly crafted. Highlights include the chawanmushi, otoro caviar, and A5 wagyu with truffle. Truly a must-visit for sushi lovers.

I recently dined at Yamashiro in Brooklyn and was thoroughly impressed by the overall experience. From the moment I stepped in, the attention to detail and the level of service were remarkable. The staff was attentive, ensuring a welcoming and comfortable dining environment. One of the highlights of my visit was the exceptional quality of the sashimi. The variety was incredible, offering a wide range of choices that aren't commonly found in other sushi spots. Each piece was notably large, making each bite more enjoyable. The freshness of the fish was evident, contributing to the rich flavors and the satisfying dining experience. The sake selection at Yamashiro deserves a special mention. It was rich and diverse, perfectly complementing the meal. Whether you're a sake aficionado or new to the drink, you'll find something that suits your palate. What truly stood out was the value for money. Despite the high quality of food and service, the prices were very reasonable. It's not often you find such a gem that combines affordability with top-notch quality. In summary, Yamashiro in Brooklyn is a must-visit for anyone looking for an authentic and high-quality sushi dining experience. The combination of fresh sashimi, attentive service, and a great selection of sake, all at a reasonable price, makes it a standout choice.

The omakase experience was incredible. One of the best meals I’ve had in a while! The service was amazing and every serving was delicious. I cannot recommend enough! Kelly was so sweet & attentive. I can’t wait to go back!

Food here was very delicious and surprisingly affordable! The Bento Box just cost $20 dollars and look all it brings! I was very satisfied and took some food home. This is a small comfy place in Myrtle St. perfect for a date with your partner or friends. Staff is very welcoming and friendly. Definitely great place for some sushi, tonkatsu, chicken teriyaki and pumpkin soup.

Always has great food the spicy tuna by far my favorite. The chicken tempura roll is super crunchy and the flavors blend well together.

I don’t remember what I ordered exactly but the beef from this noodle was amazing. It’s very tender and soft, making it easy to consume. The noodles were fine, though a bit dry because it was stir fried.

One of the best omakase’s in Brooklyn - every course is its own creative and unique experience of flavors singing in harmony! Not only is this the freshest fish and seafood, but the chef is so attentive to ensuring each bite is exquisite. I love the purism of just fish, but the subtle adjustments of adding some truffle here, caviar there, pickled yuzu, foie gras and wait for it…gold sparkles - just enhances the flavors of the fish. Not only is it incredible but the value is great. 12 courses for $88 or 19 courses for $108 with the most attentive service is such a deal. This place opened mid 2025 while next door is the restaurant from the same owners that have been around for 20 years. Definitely go check them out!

Hate to give this review because I love the ability to make a last minute reservation and get in but this is one of the best omakase experiences I’ve ever had. No frills- great service, insane culinary experience that leaves me in awe. This should be your new favorite omakase in the city!

First time order take out from the website. The transaction was smooth. Portions are good. The maki rolls are well-made: Rice to fish ratio is good. The sashmi is fresh. Will order again. Glad I finally tried the neighborhood spot.

Wonderful experience. For the price, the quality is excellent and it comes with your choice of a bottle of sake as well. Both the head chef and the owner were sweet, welcoming, and hospitable - the experience from start to finish was warm. Chef Jay was experienced, creative, meticulous, and talented; the dishes were curated with precision and care and were absolutely delicious. Can't wait to go back, would recommend 10/10

I have been to quite a few omakase and Yamashiro is by far the best experience that I had. The chef Jimmy studied in Japan for 5 years. I learned so much during the dinner regarding different fishes characteristics. They get the fish freshly from Japan. I learned to appreciate the difference in taste and texture of different salmons. The food is ridiculously good. The service is impeccable. My sake was filled quietly with every sip I took. I highly recommend the restaurant. Too bad I am from out of town, or else I would definitely be a regular there.

I love this restaurant. I have not been around in years and the sitting section is gone, but the food is still as fresh and delicious as I remembered. So many options of dishes to choose from. The restaurant is clean and the owner is very nice. You want an amazing experience with great Chinese food, come here, you will not be disappointed.

Ah, yes, the legendary Kum Kau Kitchen! It was nostalgic, somewhat, to see that they’d returned to their, original, take-out restaurant format, just the way I'd remembered it. Alas, it is one of the two last remaining Myrtle Ave establishments that go back to the 70's, my heyday! I'm fairly certain that I was one of their first customers (if not THE first), and was a consistent regular from '76 to '82. Oh, the memories of coming home from Sweet Basil's Jazz Club, getting off of the GG (not the G) at Clinton And Washington, at 2:30 in the morning, and walking down to Kum Kau Kitchen for a half a fried-chicken and fried rice! Well, even tho' Sweet Basil's is long-gone, and the GG is, now, just the G, Kum Kau's half a fried-chicken and fried rice is STILL a classic. May they be there, on Myrtle Avenue, just off the corner of Washington Avenue, forever (‘tho, I’m afraid, I’ll never visit my former home, again)! Thanks, Kum Kau Kitchen, for many fond memories!

Kum Kau was our go-to for great Chinese food when at Pratt Institute. I know it's changed owners and location on Myrtle Avenue a few times, but was pleased to see my favorite appetizer, roast pork bun, is still on the menu. They're still big and incredibly tasty.. but there wasn't as much meat in them as back in the day (late '90s). Got 3 buns for $9. The current location is much smaller. It was busy so I guess the rest of the menu is still good, too. No seating inside or outside to eat, but has a long bench inside for people waiting for orders. Has a health department inspection sign with an A rating in the front window. Just disappointed that in 2024, I still had to pay with cash (they have a small ATM inside).

Used to be one of my favorite places for over 25 years. They fell way off with the food. There are no Chinese people in the kitchen anymore. It is not authentic anymore. I ordered a large wonton soup and it always has white meat in it. This time they decided to cut corners and I’m seeing dark meat or mystery meat in it. The shrimp with broccoli always being my staple, it is seriously NOT THE SAME anymore. I will NEVER go back. I tried several times to see if it was just me but it isn’t. From my pics attached, what kind of meat is this? It’s certainly not breast meat (I always put the pack of noodles in that comes with the soup).🤢

This is one of the best Chinese food places in the neighborhood, the restaurant is big, clean and has restrooms for the customers, the service was fairly quick and the waiter was nice keeping us hydrated with the water refills. I asked for fried shrimp and my friend asked for shrimp fried rice and the serving was alot that we shared the food in between both and we barely finished it being full at the end. The dumplings were good as well and I would really recommend this place to everyone I know and I would most definitely come back.

Solid sushi spot that hits the spot when you’re craving sushi and other Japanese food. The lunch specials are a good deal. They also have a few non-Japanese items too, like soup dumplings, which are decent.

decent fried rice. was really good on being spicy but for $7.50 i was disappointed to see absolutely no veggies besides rice. like the one egg is a nice touch- but that's pretty cheap to throw just onion (mad cheap) and an egg in the rice. just two pieces of broccoli woulda made me happier. but there was zero. def come back for a lunch special one day.

Food is great. Service, however, sucks. You will easily wait 10-15+ minutes after the quoted pickup time, you’ll be told “just a couple more minutes” for half an hour, and the whole process is excruciating. I don’t recommend ordering to pickup from this restaurant at all unless you want a headache.

It’s extremely average Chinese food. The classic sesame chicken combo was $11.50 or around that and was not great. “Chicken” was mostly just breading like any other low end Chinese takeout. Rice was decent. I wouldn’t go here over any other place, at least for this dish.

I got bbq boneless ribs and fries with a pork eggroll. First thing the ribs tasted like they put to much of 1 season and they were over cooked seemed like the were reheated. The fries were 100% reheated. The only thing that was fresh was the damn eggroll … the level of disappointment I felt is indescribable. Update: I decided to give them another chance and I regret it 26$ for reheated food nothing was fresh I will never buy from here again this place just keeps reheating things and selling it at full price. I do not believe it is the same people that were cooking and working there as before.

We stopped by, hoping to partake in some of our favorites, and were blown away by the significant changes. The sit-down restaurant was now a liquor store. Though you can walk in and place an order, it must be done and paid for through the QR Code App. I was floored. Lastly, I asked about my favorite, Chicken and Pine Nuts or Salt Baked Shrimp and neither were available. The one other parton in there while I was, stated, "New management". Feeling sad, I left without ordering.

Just bad food. Kum Kau has always been my go-to for great Chinese food since I was a teenager and I’m a middle-aged adult now. One time I found a hair in my food and their response to that was so cavalier, so indifferent. Some months later I gave them a chance to redeem themselves, but each time they’ve fallen drastically short with me having to just trash my food but it’s truly that bad. And to demand cash only for subpar food is audacious. Somewhere and at some point they’ve lost their tasty touch. They’ve had a good run, but the food just sucks now.

I ordered the roasted duck (which was quite pricey I might add) and it was bland and old. Like it was sitting for hours. It was so bad I had to call because I use to frequent this establishment. When I spoke to one of the cooks I was told that they no longer cook the roast duck on site they out soured it out to another kitchen and flash fry it. The duck was old dry and bland. The worst I’ve ever had it. I would show pictures but already threw it in the trash.

I ordered the sweet and sour chicken. I couldn’t even finish it. The rice was so small, not a pint like it said on the menu. The sauce was so red and jelly-like. For upwards of $10, it was so not worth it. I didn’t end up finishing it. The chicken smelled good but it wasn’t that good either.

I don’t understand how this place has so many good reviews. Sesame chicken was soggy. Broccoli was over cooked but tough at the stem. The shrimp dumplings look gross...and one contained a hair. Really lovely! Lo Mein had no flavor. I ordered an egg roll and they gave me pork. I won’t be ordering Chinese food from here again. And neither should you. Go else where, trust me.
