Great classic New York slice from a classic family owned pizzeria. The classic large cheese pie had soft and stringy mozzarella cheese topped off the tangy margherita sauce nicely. It's a little dingy being a little walk from the boardwalk in a not so glamorous area. But don't be afraid because it is worth the walk. The owner is nice and conversational. Don't be shy.

Pizza was delicious.Only three people working in the back making pies, two servers holding down the fort. They serve beer and wine, and your typical old school glass bottles of soda.I ordered a small pie (perfect size for two people) half pepperoni. It's a thin pie, dough is very fresh with flavor all the way through. It's so soft that even my girlfriend who HATES crusts enjoyed this one alot.If you don't want to wait they do have Take-Out! AND ALSO CASH ONLY!!!!

It's the way pizza should be. A thin, crunchy crust. Tasty sauce (possibly a little sour which personally I liked) and fresh cheese. It's probably true that you can find better pizza, but none as authentic. Totonno's doesn't try too hard to be the best, they simply have been making great pizza this way for eons. I only ordered the cheese pizza which in my opinion is the only way to truly compare different pizzerias. If I like it, then I try the toppings. This place is so good, I'm afraid to ruin it with toppings.

Update, 7 years later. All things come to an end, and the only thing that's constant is entropy. Totonno's is now open only on weekends, and only as take-out. You cannot eat inside. After a 100 years in operation, it's clear that the end is nigh. This is doubly sad since the pizza is still amazing. So, get here while you still can. Best pizza in NYC. No discussion.

The pizza, to be clear, is good, maybe even very good. Maybe great. But what distinguishes this place its its complete and total lack of affectation. There’s one thing in the menu: pizza. No salad. No dessert. Pizza. Oh, and there’s actually no menu, just a sign board. And the servers are kind of rude. And it’s across the street from a body shop. THEY DON’T MAKE PLACES LIKE THIS ANYMORE, places that have no apparent interest in evolving into something better. The pizza, however, is pretty good, made with high quality ingredients and with a nice crispy charcoal toasted crust. It’s not Pepe’s aPizza, but it’s still damned good and I’m glad we stopped by.

Sadly the original pizza folks have passed on. They are arguably the originators of NY Pizza. The family is having trouble keeping it going and is only open on weekends. It's for sale and a great historic investment for someone! If I was only younger!

Listen. This Pizza was amazing. I'm a tourist visiting Coney Island and while I was in Brooklyn for the day I wanted to try some of its famed pizza. So I looked up some of the best pizza and found the best one near me. This place has been around for nearly 100 years. And the pizza was great. I was there on July 23, 2023, But here's a couple notes: 1- they sell it by the pie only, $25 for a plain pizza. 2- it's To go only, took about 20-30mins 3- it's sketchy as hell in that area. I'd say go in a group because you will definitely be waiting a long time and some sketchy characters might show up while you're waiting outside. Since it's to go only they don't let you wait inside. Not sure why this is, but that's how it was. The pizza was worth it all though

Despite the fairly long wait, the experience is great. The pizza is delicious, service is very laid back and you don't feel rushed. They don't pack the people in and fill up every seat. One table per party, no matter how many seats are left empty. If you're looking for delicious old school pizza, don't mind the wait. Or just go during the day on a weekday.

In fact, everything you’ve read, from how amazing the white pizza is to how busy it is to how surly the owner lady is — every bit of it is true. And it’s worth all your time and effort and money to try it. You will not be disappointed. And if you are, you did it wrong.

My all time favorite NYC pizza, hands down. No contest. Everyone else go home. Bring a friend and your appitite because this is a full pie joint. The service is NY brusque and hand-made slow, but SO worth the wait. The garlic pie was everything I ever wanted and more. I was burping garlic for hours. I like to think of it as little reminders of deliciousness. It's even stellar plain. Beautifully coal oven charred, fairly thin crust. Tasty sauce bubbling up through the strategically placed rounds of mozzarella.... Perfect. The seating is a bit limited because the tables are mostly for parties of 4 or more, so don't be surprised if you find a queue outside. The wait time isn't all that bad because people don't tend to linger. They have the average selection of bottled soda and water, with a small wine list and a limited selection of beer. Honestly, I would skip the beer for a trip to Coney Island Brewery only a short walk away, because you're not here for beer. You're here for some of the best pizza that only New York can offer. Suck it Chicago!

Death, Taxes and Totonno’s is the best pizza in NYC. These are three self evident truths I know are indisputable and irrefutable. I do not say this in a vacuum, this is not some cheap hyperbole. I’ve eaten at the great pizza shops in the NYC area, I’ve been where you’ve been! This place is truly number 1 and worth the visit. The sweet Nonna who’s taken care of so many patrons is at the helm of this establishment. She will take your order, she will ask you if you need plates and napkins, she will double check if you need more and give you more just because she knows you’ll probably need more. That’s what a Nonna does! Let’s talk about the pizza, all I have to say is GARLIC. It’s the GARLIC, they microplane that stuff into the sauce. It’s practically floating on top. The lip of the crust is being kissed ever so gently by that sauce with the consent of that garlic and sprinkling of Pecorino Romano cheese. It’s the perfect bite. This pizza is what you need and you didn’t know it. It’s weep worthy. In conclusion, it’s a 10 outta 10, 5 stars, an A+, with a 4.0GPA, it’s the valedictorian, the Rhodes Scholar, it earns the U.S. Medal of Honor for its service, it’s the Commander in Chief of all pizza forces.

Great place!! Pizza is incredible and the taste is really worth the wait. Yes!! There is at least an hour wait outside (if you are lucky could be less) and an hour wait inside (if you are lucky and they don’t have lots of orders to go) you will be getting your pizza quick. However, this is a great spot to eat but be prepared for some hold time.

Old school italiano pizza place. No fancy bells or whistles. Great traditional think crust pizza 🍕 be prepared to wait for a table outside. We waited over an hour. It’s kind of part of the experience lol. Get in line before 7:30pm to guarantee you’ll be seated.

Excellent pizza. Worth the trip from anywhere. Old school pizzeria, with old school attitude. A must for anybody that loves pizza. After you are done with your pie, go check out coney Island brewery and the original Nathan's for over priced hotdogs.

I almost left the Coney Island Boardwalk Subway Station when my phone notified me of a restaurant I wanted to try. Upon my arrival I could hear a child's excitement as his father told him they'd be eating Totonno's! I just managed to beat the lunch rush as at least 15 people came in after I placed my order. When my pizza arrived every other patron drooled as steam evaporated from my freshly baked pie. I burned my mouth but it was absolutely worth it. It's not a inexpensive pizza but well worth the cost especially if you traveled around the country like me.

This pizza is fantastic. We got one plain (cheese) and one pepperoni. The crust is thin and crisp, the mozzarella is fresh, and the sauce has a nice tang. We wished we had ordered one more. 10/10, would recommend.

This historical gem is located in the heart of Coney Island which is why I gave it one star for atmosphere but the service is pretty good like previously stated in other reviews the owner can be a bit rough around the edges but she's an old school Italian lady and I get it growing up in Brooklyn myself. Most importantly the pizza is really good But like other people said it's a bit pricey for the size of the pie but you get what you pay for and I believe that it's worth it even if you only want to try it once to experience a taste of History.

Visited Totonno’s Pizza today. Located in Coney Island, this institution is only open on Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 5 PM. There is a lot to love about this pizza.   The crust was baked just right. Each bite you heard a satisfying crunch unlike other pizzas that are doughy. The end/crust was puffy and not flat. Lastly, the sauce, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheese round out your sensory overload! Coal fired pizzas take on a different flavor vs. wood and gas stoves. If you are in the area, you must try one of the few remaining coal fired pizza restaurants in New York City. Recent regulations have made it extremely costly for these restaurants to remain in business.  They only sell one size starting at $27 for a margarita. Visit them and check out Coney Island along the way.

This place is an old school spot - they don't make anything like this anymore. It was absolute pizza perfection, eaten on a stoop. The crust was perfect, the cheese wasn't greasy, the sauce was easily the best tomato sauce I've ever tasted. Easily my number 1 pizza ever. Worth every calorie. Thank you guys so much!

Totonno’s in Coney Island is a true NYC classic. The pizza is excellent — you can really taste the quality ingredients and the care that goes into making it. The staff are wonderful, straight-up authentic New Yorkers, which makes the whole experience even better. The old-school atmosphere feels like stepping back in time, and you can sense the history in every corner. This place is a real gem and such an important part of New York’s pizza story. Definitely worth the trip.

You have to go inside and order your whole pie, pay and provide your phone number. They will call you when the pie is ready for pickup. No eating inside so you can take your pie out and eat on the curb, like we did … I have to say that one pie is great for 2 people and the dough is exceptional.

Widely regarded as the best pizza place in America, and with good reason. I had a holiday to New York and Totonno's was top of my must eat list, it does not disappoint with a pizza that is beautifully light and crisp with tomato rich and fresh and cheese that was both sharp in flavour but stringy enough to satisfy the kid inside. The décor is a magnificent collection of newspaper cuttings, signed pictures and adverts making you feel that this is clearly not a flash in the pan place. Totonno's is proper pizza history (Google it) and their stubborn resistance to change is a joyous stance. They make pizza as they always have done, and when the taste is as good as this may they long continue. Thank you Michael and cookie.

Great NY pizza with excellent crust. However, very simple toppings. Worth checking out. I've been to Italy so I really respect fresh, clean ingredients but something was missing to elevate it higher (five star)

Still one of the best in NYC but take out only means the pie goes in a box where it loses some of that amazing texture you get when eating it right of the oven brought to your table fresh and hot. I fear those days are gone. It was kind of sad picking up our pies with all the old tables and chairs stacked in the corner. Different times for the place that was always my NYC favorite.

This old-time pizza shop is now producing for Gold Belly orders. If you watched the Netflix episode of Somebody Feed Phil (NYC), it shows how quaint the place was. Now, you either or by phone or walk up the door to place the order. No customer is allowed inside now. The will call you when your order is ready. They are open to the public just Saturday and Sundays. Basic cheese/sauce pizza is smallish for $28 ca$h. Each topping is $4 add-on. We ordered half with pepperoni only and was still charged the $4, disappointing. But, all in all the pizza..crust...sauce...cheese..bake was really excellent. Highly recommend for a splurge.

Eat it immediately; it needs to be piping hot. Sauce is excellent. Crust is flavorful, but the center wasn't very crisp. No seating. Service could be improved. I wasn't sure if they actually wanted customers to be there or not.

Good Pizza, love the dough and crust. You may a wait a while, but it's a nice homey feeling to it. The slice progressively gets better with each bite. No my preferred option of cheese, but it was that good that I didn't mind. Also the restaurant itself is quite small but welcomes you with its history. Be warned for newcomers, it's not a traditional pizza spot. Meaning you are not getting individual slices. I'm sure you'll enjoy it however 👍👍

I have come here many times and I have to say although the pizza is amazing. The price is just not justifiable for any pizza. There any many pizza shops in NY popping up all over and you can get a pie for half the price for the same quality. I do think that if you are visiting NY, particularly Coney Island, you have to try Totonnos. It's a classic and old fashioned NY pizza that I think is a must on any To Do list. They've done things the same way since day one and it's been perfect. If only the pies were a little bit cheaper I would come here everyday.

Yummy pizza. American and not Italian anymore but tasty, crispy and moist. Fast service even if you have to pass a 20 minute line before you get a table. Please don’t ask for tap water if you don’t want bad surprises and be enough slim to fit in their restroom.

This is probably the crispiest pizza I’ve tried in my life and it is sooo good! I waited around 30 minutes outside the restaurant just to get a table and it was totally worth it. Keep in mind that these pizzas are kind of big, so one can feed up to 3 people.

Totonno’s is a classic. It used to be better back in the early 90s, but maybe my taste buds have changed. The last time I ate there was just before Covid. I think the sauce used to have a bit more zing or something, I recall it lost its luster. I read in a NY Times article that this place is now for sale. That’s probably for the best. Keep the coal oven running if it’s grandfathered in. It would be a shame to extinguish it. I’ve always eaten here when it had indoor dining, so that’s why I gave it 4 ⭐️. That being said, I wouldn’t take the train out now just to be told I had to sit on a curb to eat my pizza. (That’s for rubes or pizza nerds, of which I am neither.)

Not worth the hype. Pizza is average, takes them forever to bake it and you need to wait on the street as they have not opened the dining room yet (take away only on Sept 2023). Better to order ahead to at least reduce that pain

I’m mixed on my overall experience for Tontonnos. Walked there and initially it looked closed but a lady answered the front door and took our order. Was told they don’t allow anyone inside and Was told they only have one size 14” but the pie seemed smaller than that. On top of that, the price was way up there , $31 for one topping pepperoni. Pizza wasn’t bad but didn’t seem worth it considering the size and the price. not sure I would repeat but I do wish them good luck.

I assume since the ratings were so high and listed as the "#1 voted Pizza in NYC as per Food Network.", my expectations/standards were high. But the pizza was alright. The sauce and fresh made mozzarella definitely made a difference in the taste. But I would not announce this as a #1 Pizza in NYC. I liked that it was a family owned business, be prepared to only pay cash when you arrive and the menu is very simple.

We took a small detour here on a day to Coney beach, having heard about the pizza. It appears to be for sale, in the process of sale, or something like that. There is no sitting inside anymore - the tables and chairs are stacked up inside, feels very much like they're moving out. Theres also no menu - we asked if there was, and were told its (something like) $24 for a Margherita, and $4 for a topping (but there's no menu to know what they have on offer) You order from a lady sitting at the back booth, then your pizzas are made freshly as your order, which was really cool. The kitchen is open so you can see your pizza bubbling in the oven. It was a good pizza, a bit too doughy for me and my slightly gluten-intolerant stomach, but the sauce was good and the boys both enjoyed it a lot.

We went with high expectations given the famous reputation, but were disappointed. There is no table service at present because there's not enough staff, just Cookie taking orders at an old booth. The pie had a great crust but was too heavy on the sauce and light on flavor.

Great pizza, but the service wasn't good. They didn't offer dine in service, there was no cash register, and the lady taking my order was kind of mean. If you're willing to deal with all that for good pizza, I suggest it!

It's a small pizza factory focused on shipping pizzas nationally. We got there on a dark, rainy Sunday afternoon. At first, I thought it was closed- the lights inside were off. The area is a little sketchy, which probably explains why the door is locked. A woman came to the door, took our order. $32 in cash for one half pepperoni, half cheese pizza. The pizza was medium to smallish sized. No one was allowed in the place, and the lights were off. We stood outside and they handed it to us through the door when it was ready. We ate the pizza in our car. She did give us paper plates and napkins, though. Despite the experience, I have to say- the pizza was amazing. Every element was good! The crust was crispy, thin on the bottom, with a good, dark rind on the outside, and had a nice toasted flavor. The sauce was chunky, so the pizza was juicy but the crust stayed crispy, and had great tomato flavor. Cheese was also good- real fresh mozzarella on top. I love pizza of all kinds, but this is one of the best I've ever had- not only in New York, but even in Italy. I doubt their shipped pizzas could compare to ones straight from their brick oven.

One of NYC's legendary pizzas. If it was still operated like a normal pizza shop, it would absolutely be destination worthy. Unfortunately, 5 years after COVID they still are takeout only and their hours are completely random. Supposedly this is because the dude that makes the pizzas now lives in Pennsylvania. The other rumor is that they are trying to sell the place and don't have anybody to inherit the business so basically mailing it in. Either, way it seems Totonno's is one foot in the grave. 😔 There are many great pizza places in Brooklyn (and frankly, better ones) that don't provide this inexplicable hassle. Would suggest visiting one of those.

Don't get me wrong, the pizza was actually quite good. Ordered a large pie for me and my wife and it was delicious. The sauce, the crust, the cheese, were all on point. The negative was that we waited more than 2 hours, first on a long line stretching out on the sidewalk on a hot summer day which barely moved. We got seated mainly because we were a party of 2. People who waited in front of us because they were a larger party probably waited for 2 hours outside. we ordered our pie and then waited an additional hour for that to show up. Despite the pizza being amazing, the logistics of their pizza making is horrendously slow. I dont think they even started making our pie until about 15 minutes before they served it. I'd say go during off peak time and prepare for a wait. I don't think I'll be going back. There are better options with much shorter waits that are equally as satisfying.

The pizza was average. The owner was rude, as was stated in previous reviews. The mozzarella was really good. The dog was cooked well done. But the price was outrageous. $25 for a large pie. As a recommendation, my favorite pizza place in New York has being Goodfellas on Staten Island, and then Brooklyn.

I wanted to love this place due to its history, being on Somebody Feed Phil, and being walking distance to home. However, it’s very expensive for what it is, 2 pizzas (one white and one pepperoni with a few vegetables) was $60. They were between 12 and 14 inches. The pizza is good but not enough for the price. The owner at first can be a bit rough around the edges but I stood in there and chatted with her and the staff with everyone becoming friendly. There is no inside seating anymore, takeout only.

It’s really unfortunate they don’t let you dine in bc the pizza was great but by the time you walk to the pier it's basically cold. Also we were waiting outside for 20 min for 1 pizza despite the place being totally empty. The lady acted like we were inconveniencing her by being there.

Pizza was good, but not much better that most Neapolitan places. The fresh mozzarella made in the store is definitely nice. Service was borderline indifferent. It's nice that it's an old school place but servers sitting at customers tables ignoring the rest loses the charm pretty quick. Seems to always be a wait but that's a function of popularity, the guy making pizzas was cranking them out as fast as he could. Price is based on reputation more than what it really is.

After a 30 min wait outside at an off-peak time (typical for NY pizza places), we had another hour to wait inside with attitude from the waitress that this is normal. What doesn’t add up is that delivery/takeout orders that came after us were being served in a timely manner. I get the charm and tradition of the place, but they really need to improve how they do business if the name is gonna stand the test of time. It has potential with the right management. Pizza was good (or maybe we were just that hungry after all the waiting) and the pizza chef was very friendly (in sharp contrast to the old lady in charge). Hate to write this kind of review for a family owned business which I like to support as a matter of principle, but at its current state, it’s not worth the long waits inside and outside.

Pizza was ok. The sauce was the best part, but it was very basic - this is not a problem but then it makes me wonder what the price of the pizza is going in to, because for average pizza there a dozens of places in brooklyn that are cheaper and faster. Service took about 30 minutes, and I had gotten there right at opening. The price was about 18.5 (20$ after tax) for a small pizza which I was able to easily eat by myself. Large was 20$ (22$) after tax. Seating inside was pretty dismal - there were several VERY large tables, but if you had a party of two, you end up using a large amount of real estate in the building. Last problem - a cash only business. This is the 21st century, and with how much traffic this store gets, its time to invest in a card reader.

It's pretty overrated and underwhelming. For it to be rated so highly, I expected so much more. The white was pretty good, but the burnt crust just completely took away from it. The rest was bland and basic. The prices would have made sense if it was as good as it was rated to be, but it is not. Maybe they just had a new person working but it was not anything I'd want to eat, or pay for, again.

The place is a wreck; it’s not for food, it’s just another roadside eating joint. You can’t sit inside and eat; if you’re not local, I wouldn’t recommend going there at all. I took an Uber to this place at four times the cost of the food and had to stand outside to eat this pizza. If you love to see a part of history, go there. If you have an arrogant boss or colleague, take them there; show them that power and greatness don’t last forever."

If they had an option for zero stars I would put that. Terrible service. Anytime me and my mother try to order pizza from here, they turn us away. For example, they cancelled my order today due to an "emergency" when I quite literally saw 5 people walking out of there with slices. I don't know what their issue is with me or my family but it is ridiculous. And not to mention, we live right up the block from them for years. I'm not sure if it is a racial issue because my family is spanish, but something has to give. Very upsetting.

Pizza was pretty good. Not worth the hype. Above average at best. Service was terrible; Rude and slow. If you're okay with tap water you have to get it yourself from a sink in the back that doubles as the sink people wash their hands with after the restroom.

Pizza was decent. The customer service was not good. Not worth going out of your way and walking through a sketchy neighborhood to have to wait outside until your table is ready, especially with children and/or elderly. Long wait. The toilet room is worse than a small Manhattan bathroom and the separate washroom to wash your hands is also bad. The owner is disrespectful and thinks because they make "good pizza" they can have an attitude. Not worth it, don't go, I will not go back.

Where to start.... well let's start saying I was born and raised in Italy so I think I have a little more knowledge of the majority of the people here on what a good pizza taste like, this is OK at best. My review would be 3 star if it was just for the pizza, but 1 for the whole experience. Beside waiting 1 hour in line (I get it it was during the mermaid parade) The old lady server was extremely rude, she got upset with us because we wanted to share 1 pizza in 4 (even tho we also all got drinks) and since we didn't order more she gave us 1 star service the whole time (like she literally threw napkins on the table like it was garbage) Never again!

Hours incorrect. Arrived @ 1 pm. Woman held up hand and finally came to door about 10 min later and asked if we ordered. Said 40 min for pizza in grumpy fashion. Did not allow us to come in. Food may be good????? But service off putting. We left.

AVOID THIS OVERHYPED PLACE!!! $28 for medium sized plain cheese pizza. RIP OFF!!!! No indoor dining in May 2023!!!! HOW?!?! Refused outdoor dining despite a large party eating outside when we ordered at 3pm. Go elsewhere, where they actually appreciate your business.

This place seems to be closed (permanently or temporarily I do not know), which I guess is why the most recent reviews on Google maps are from months ago. Sadly I didn’t check this before driving more than an hour to taste what I’ve heard is a legendary pie. It’s a shame that Google maps didn’t have this information up to date. The old lady that takes the order needs to take a course for customer service. She’s rude with a nasty attitude …. Pizza was bland not worth $28 dollars

We walked in and rude lady sitting at the seat by counter, rudely asked what I want. Then she points to boxes and says thats the size and even though she said we can't eat inside, she asks for phone number. In other words she probably wanted us to wait outside. So I told her to cancel order and walked out. We felt that we bothered her when we walked in.

They have Slice and Grrubhub on their website to take orders and pay. Then when you get the notification to pick up your order, they tell you that they don't go by that and you have to come back later. Too much hassle for an overpriced 14" pie. Not worth it.

Ranks with the worst Pizza I have ever had. Too bad to as Phil recommended it on Sonebody Feed Phil and it was sir of supposed to be the birthplace of NY pizza. Not open for dinning inside still and orders only through Uber Eats.

Maybe the pizza is good, but I would not know. I just tried bringing my family of 6 here for lunch. They had two open tables, but the owner would not let us sit and dine in. It was takeout only. It is winter and freezing outside. It was weird and rude. Maybe this place was awesome 50 years ago, but I see no need to ever come here again.

The pizza is great, but it’s definitely not worth going there unless you want to be treated like crap. Today was my second and last time ever stepping foot in there. The first time I went, the server, an older woman with red hair was plain nasty and was super rude, I didn’t tip her she simply did not deserve it. She makes you feel like your presence alone is the biggest bother to her. There are plenty of servers who are lovely people, and know how to treat their customers. Today I went back and what do you know? The same woman is there, obviously just older and even more nastier than the last time. This time I walked out. I refuse to deal with her arrogant disrespectful self.

Used to be a fabulous place. Things changed unfortunately. Now the biggest pizza you can get is 14", that will cost you $32.66. When I got home I counted 9 slices of pepperoni on it total. Diameter is not 14" but 11". Simple calculation tells you the area difference: A(11") = 95 sq. inches, A(14") = 154 sq. inches. So if you paid for 3 pies you ended up getting two for the same price. Sad. People are nice though. Always liked this place.
