Opinions de Underwood's Cafeteria Brownwood
I’ve been eating at this central Texas Brownwood restaurant since I was a boy. Every time I walk thru those doors I’m transported to the old days, not much has changed. “What’s a beefsteak?” It’s the shoulder roast, and its fork tender and delicious. I opted for the German sausage. BBQ beans, buttery mash w/gravy, and sweet corn. AYCE on the sides and rolls. Yup peach cobbler, cherry and apple. Helpful and courteous staff will bring it to you with a smile! Don’t think, just stop! Except Wednesday. :(
If you've never eaten at Underwood's then you are missing out! I've lived here 50 years and have never had a bad experience with either the food or staff. Dinning in you experience a clean, inviting restaurant with more food then you can shake a stick at! The ROLLS!!! Food is always hot and fresh, probably because it is always going into people's mouths! Yes, its that good! Anyway, and Brownwood landmark in every sense of the term, go have some Underwood's!
I have not been to Underwood's BBQ since I was a child & they closed it..I was sad & my large family loved it..haven't seen one in about 50 years..on our way to Austin, Texas today from Amarillo I saw one in Brownwood..I was ECSTATIC & pointed it out to my brother & daughter..My brother immediately said we can stop & eat..it was as AWESOME as when I was a child..they said they are the only one left..it made our whole trip..Thank you Underwood's for flooding me with wonderful memories & wonderful food..I wish you could expand again..🙂
They have a sliced bbq beef steak that is delicious. It is very tender and lean and has their special bbq sauce on it. Also bbq chicken and a roast chicken with a honey butter glaze with garlic pepper. Their fried chicken is the best around. Also, the hot rolls and cobbler are delicious. It is worth the drive to come by Underwood's.
My over grown child who normally refuses to eat, ate it all. I call that a success. Add to that great staff and fantastic service....get yourself to Underwoods you won't regret it. Oh AND it didn't cost much more fast food to feed my who family. I was shocked at the value.
We were passing by to go back home to Austin Tx… saw the sign and read the reviews. We’ve always like bbq but some places have disappoint. But this place OMG!!! I will be driving back (even if it’s 3 hrs away from home). I told my husband and daughter, we must come back! The food is delicious, the staff is super friendly and the place is very nice and homie. My family kept talking how wonderful and delicious the food was: “this is so good! This is so delicious! You have to try this. We have to take some home!” I ate so much, but don’t regret it.
I came here on a band trip, and the food was amazing, I've came many times before and it always amazes me with the food, and during this trip there was such a kind lady, and her service was perfect! Overall 5 stars
Absolutely great food. The people were so kind. They brought around fresh hot rolls to the dining room. I got the BBQ chicken and thought it was too much to eat then devoured the whole thing.
Okay, I fully admit I'm biased on this review. I've been coming here for more than 50 years and I'm 58 years old. This is comfort food for me. I can remember coming here with my grandparents, parents, friends in high school, wife and kids. What makes it so enjoyable is the people that run it. It's a multi-generational restaurant with family that's still involved everyday. It's a good value, good food. I can still remember the grandmother like lady that would come by and ask me in my high school buddies if we wanted another hot roll or whipped cream for our cobbler. It's funny how we still talk about that 40 years later. Such a great establishment and I hope they can continue through the next generation. I didn't grow up in Brownwood but I have a lot of ties here and when I tell people I'm connected to Brownwood they always mention Underwood's.
I come through Brownwood about once a year. We stopped in at Underwood's. The sides were good and the chicken had great flavor. The sides we tried were green beans, coleslaw, mashed potatoes, rolls, beans, and cherry cobbler. The meal is pricy, but you can get as many sides as you want! You get cobbler to boot! So by the time that you get all of the meat and sides and rolls and dessert, the price weighs out okay. It's a great experience if you enjoy cafeteria type eating. This restaurant has been around for many, many years and people come back year after year to enjoy their barbecue favorites.
Omg...thank goodness I don't live near here. I would eat here every day. I had the steak sandwich and my husband had chicken fried steak. It was DELICIOUS. The steak is butter like fork tender. All of this food was just a little over 20 bucks. I couldn't believe it. They let you have all of the sides you want AND you can take your food home with you in yo go boxes. (I cant eat much at a time..but i eat often...lol)
You will definitely not go home hungry. The best down-home cooking you've ever had. Sliced BBQ like you've never had it before. Homemade yeast rolls, unlimited sides. Don't even try to stop eating the cherry cobbler. It's a sin to leave any left in the bowl. Oh, their fried chicken is wayyyy better than any other place you can buy from or cook from. They're very reasonably priced too.
Let me just start off by saying WOW WOW WOW!!!!! What a great place I found in Brownwood Texas. And I wouldn't have found it if I had not missed my turn or earlier in the day to come home. Once I missed my turn I knew there was other ways to get back to San Antonio and going through Brownwood was one of them. I was starving and there was a big advertisement sign out on the highway about Underwood's. Figured I'd give it a try. Best decision I've ever made. Cafeteria style dining. All the staff that I ran into were all very very nice. The young lady at the beginning explained how everything worked. The server gives you your meat choice and then the best thing I've ever heard she said "everything from the green beans down is self-serve and it's unlimited desert and unlimited rolls."I decided to have the 3-piece chicken with mashed potatoes, gravy and rolls with a sweet tea. The other neat thing was the little lady walking around the dining-room pushing the cart asking if you wanted a refill on drinks or on your deserts. This brought me back to the early sixties and the Wyatt's cafeteria I used to go to with my family that did the very same thing. This was a small town, relaxed, friendly environment to just sit back in this small town in a cafeteria Restaurant and enjoy some fantastic food. I have traveled all across the Southwest, Colorado, South Dakota Missouri Kansas Oklahoma and more. This is the first time I've ever given somebody 5 stars and they absolutely deserved it. Anytime I travel now if Brownwood is a possibility I will get off the highway and drive the extra hour or so just to swing over there and eat. If you're in Central Texas and you're going to be near Brownwood pull into Underwood's and have some great food.
The food is overall excellent, my only issue this last time is either the gravy or the chicken fried steak itself was a little too salty.
My first time and I was amazed. I am from Utah saw this homey looking sign and thought I should try it. Ribs and beef steak german sausage never tasted so good. Rolls better than my grandma's. I am coming back for the chicken. Bring our more sides drinks even let you take extras home with you. Treat yourself
Enjoyed the delicious food at a great price for the family. Staff was super friendly and welcoming. We will absolutely stop by again on our next Texas road trip.
The beef steak and ribs were very tender and delicious. I loved the cafeteria style serving line. So few places around like this. If you're in brownwood you have to eat here. Its a local gem no doubt. The staff is so friendly to. I will be back soon. Oh yes and the rolls are like magic! Come git ya some!!!
Go here! I Heard it was great from so many people, finally got to try... oh YES! The servers told me the BBQthin flank steak was most loved, and even though I'm not a steak by choice person, I took thier word and tried it. Best tasting thing I've had in a long time! Savored it! And got all the sides to try them all. Potato salad was deliciously different with paprika, veggies were normal tasting, topped with rolls and cobbler. I'm a cheep scape for food for myself, normally, so I justified the $15+price with the fact that I could take home leftovers for a second meal! Can't wait till lunchtime!😋
We came out to do some measurements on another building. We stopped to eat here and my gosh!! This place was so friendly, and the food was phenomenal. I personally don't eat much at one time but I couldn't help but to keep eating. You feel like you are apart of their community even being from out of town. They are super attentive and stopped by to ask if we wanted more rolls, dessert, or refills. The staff was genuinely so friendly you felt blessed to even be there. We will be back and you should try it out!!
This place is so good. I stop by on the way home. Had the BEST Chicken Fried Steak!! Ever! And the peach and apple cobblers were made to perfection (8/10). Not sweet and full of flavors. I will come back for more.
Damn good food for the price but y’all need to bring the ice cream for the peach cobbler back, the whip cream was still pretty good though
Good down-home cooked food at a reasonable price. Can't go wrong with that!
What's not to love about Underwood's. Family owned and operated, quick service, Buy your meat and get all you can eat sides and deserts! The food is exceptional, no matter what you order, lots of choices. If you don't already know about Underwood's (which would be kind of unbelievable) You would be remiss not to stop by!
Great place to eat and good food. Service and employees are wonderful, it's hard to find good food and service like this anymore.
If you're looking for some good old-fashioned cooking in a family-friendly atmosphere, Underwood's Cafeteria is the place for you. The BBQ is especially delicious, and the portions are generous. The staff is friendly and helpful, and they'll be sure to hook you up with some whipped cream on your cobbler if you just ask. Plus, the hot rolls are unlimited and absolutely delicious. Prices are surprisingly reasonable, making Underwood's a great option for everyone!
Have passed this place multiple times making pick-ups in the area. Was able to stop and get dinner. Great food, great prices. Friendly staff. Highly recommend. Well worth it will be back.
This restaurant seems like it's been around forever. The service is great the food is good and consistent every time I come. You get what you pay for. About $16 for all you can fit on your tray. Your choice of brisket, sausage, fried fish, chicken, or chicken fried steak. Sides plus dessert and hot rolls complete the meal.
Definitely one of the best places to eat at. The food was amazing and the staff we're all friendly and helpful. We will for sure come back again.
Underwood’s Cafeteria is highly rated and I see why! The staff are great ladies and it was packed in there. Great spot for locals and us out of town folk. I took mine food to go and ate it at the park. There was so much food! The fried chicken was crispy and delicious. I loved the homemade rolls and potato salad too. And then finished it all off with was excellent peach cobbler. Don’t worry, Underwood’s, I’ll be back!
Always GREAT food, EXCELLENT service, and QUALITY for the price paid! Thank you Underwoods for maintaining this Texas tradition! Even though we have moved to Waco, we still travel back to Brownwood just to visit your establishment! Love the beefsteak, barbecued ham, ribs, sausage, and the cobbler...WOW too much to eat so we must keep coming back! Thank you, you are the bomb!!!
It is a must try. They provide a really good service with a very reasonable price. The taste of their beef bbq is amazing which is served with their unique potato salad and make a great vombination. Their desserts are very fresh specially the peach pie that I love the most. Don't forget to try the fresh rolls. I am sure that I will be back soon ;)
Great place to stop for BBQ and all the sides you can handle. Spent many summers in Brownwood and never missed a chance to eat at Underwoods. You know what your going to get, great food and wonderful service. I was partial to the Beef but you can not go wrong with anything on the menu. And then row after row of sides from mash potatoes to greenbeans and cobbler. Also, don't forget the rolls! If your hungry stop in and leave full and happy.
This place is incredible. We opted to stop at this place instead of the chain restaurants around on our way home to Houston. This place DID NOT disappoint. The food and service is phenomenal. I must emphasize that the service is above and beyond. The apple cobbler is excellent and not overly sweet! The homemade whipped cream did not disappoint.
Very nice, good food, great folks giving very good service- with a smile to boot and very relaxed - will come back
I come here every time I pass through Brownwood. It’s very meat centric, so if you’re not into meat, it may not be for you. My favorites are the pink potato salad, rolls, and their cobbler. This visit I bought the little cup of honey butter for $.89. It rocked! I could make a meal out of those three and forget the meat. The service is out of this world. They roll little trolleys through the dining room to refill your drinks, give you take out containers, napkins, and anything you want. Even whip cream for your cobbler.
The Food Was Amazing! We got Fried Chicken And Lots Of Sides all of it was Very Good. The Staff Was so awesome they all make you feel so welcomed, Especially Vanessa She Was So Awesome and Really Elevated The Enjoyment of Our Stay! Thanks For The Great Time Underwood We WILL Visit again ✌🏻
This place is a MUST-STOP place! Wow, I'm glad I found it decades ago. I go out of my way on purpose in order to come here. Worth it? YOU BET! Great food, yes. But the service is out of this world perfect. Many thanks to everyone who works there, everyone! I'll continue to be back, of course.
Underwoods has been around many years, so they obviously do something right. I think their food is just really good. Reliably excellent food
Visited here from Fort Worth because from childhood memories and recently realized this is the only and original Underwood's left and was definitely worth the 2 1/2 hour drive. The wife wanted a T-shirt but I told her I will get one for her next time so know she wants me to take her on her birthday on 4-14 so will definitely be back. She agrees that this is everything I bragged about and the service was awesome!
Staff is super sweet and attentive. The place is clean and the food is great! The potato salad is amazing! Rolls are hot and fresh.
I don’t know where to start, except to say if you’re coming through Brownwood, and you don’t stop at Underwoods, you’re making a mistake. This isn’t just the best food in Brown county, this place is clean, well staffed with kind welcoming people. Fresh rolls brought to your table, whip cream for your cobbler. There is no best meal because they are all the best! Nobody is rushing you. They want you to stay and enjoy your meal. This is old school, and if you think fast food is cheaper you’re dead wrong. Not only is this food healthy and delicious, but it is served right in front of you. Fresh green beans, sides for all the meals, which are simply outstanding. If you’re pulling a trailer, you can park in the lot just east of the restaurant—60’ away. If you’re driving a bus park in the same place. Ample parking for cars and trucks right in front of the restaurant. You can’t miss the place for the signs and the huge cowboy about 75 feet up in the air! Enjoy!
2 lunches with all the veggies, sides, dessert and a drink for only $35?!?! You can't beat that! The service was great. The staff was friendly and accommodating without being over bearing. 10/10 will return next time I'm in the area
The food and service always good at underwood’s, but today they went above and beyond in taking care of our party of 4. We arrived a little early. One of the employees quickly offered us a table in the dining room to sit and wait. Then she brought hot rolls for us to enjoy, took our drink orders, brought our drinks to us right away. Checked on us twice after that to make sure everything was good. I almost always neglect to get a name, but I hope she will see this and feel appreciated. They could have easily locked the door and made us wait in the car. The way they took care of us almost made us speechless! Thank you Underwood’s!
The food here was all good. I had the baked chicken and my husband had the steak and sausage. All the sides were excellent as well. Homemade whip for the cobbler was wonderful.
Great food at a fair price, great service and a good atmosphere all the way around. I got the rib plate (4), 2 sides and apple cobbler. Delicious. I like the cafeteria style in regards to the sides, drinks and cobblers. Will definitely be back and highly recommend!
We stopped at this Underwood's as Rich remembered when there was one in Lubbock where he was raised when young... that location closed... so... when traveling through Texas... we made it a point to stop by this one... rhe only one left... and still family run... The food was home style... and delicious... everyone there was kind and helpful... Am sure it will become a part of our routine when in Texas...
The food is delicious! I had ribs and they were so tender that the meat fell off the bone. The peach cobbler was amazing! An attendant walked around with homemade whipped cream that was absolutely delicious!
For years I have come to Underwoods with my family and now with my own family. This place has continued to serve great meat options, cobbler and rolls. The sides are basic but good. The potato salad is very unique and delicious. I recently had a to go order and the service cant be beat. The ladies that put my order together were upbeat, happy and very kind. I will keep supporting Underwoods. A family tradition.
Underwoods is great! It's an old school cafeteria style restaurant, where you pick your entree and then go down the line and load up your tray with all the fixings. They have a ton of sides to choose from, plus fresh rolls, desserts, and drinks, all of which are included in the price of your meal. You can even get a half portion of entree if you have a smaller appetite. You can go back for as many sides or desserts as you want. The peach cobbler is my favorite! The staff are super friendly and welcoming. While you are eating, servers come around to your table with hot rolls, and whipped cream to put on your desserts. It's the ultimate comfort food experience.
Everything about Underwood's is Great, the food is Wonderful and the service is even better, from the employees helping on the service line, to the cashier and especially the lady with the tea cart, everyone was so nice and helpful, even one of the owners was greeting people and making them feel welcome. Is was quite a drive from the DFW area, but well worth it. I'm not sure when I'll be able to make it back again, but I hope it's sooner than later. Thanks again to all the employees that made my first time to eat there enjoyable. Mr. Underwood you have a Great people working for you,
I love cafeterias and awesome vintage signs. So maybe that's why I was drawn here. Passed it 4 times on some long road trips and now I can honestly say, I won't ever again. Such a warm welcome on our 1st visit. They must have known we were 1st timers by the wide-eyed look of wonder as we entered. So many choices! We were expertly guided along by a very kind and helpful staff. Get it all! Everything was delicious. The rolls, Y'all! The rolls should probably be illegal. The softest, I've ever had hands down. And if that wasn't enough, a wonderful woman is pushing a cart around with butter and utensils (I was so excited I forgot to grab mine in the line I guess) and fresh whipped cream for the warm cobbler that you better not miss out on. We left happy, full, and wanting to share this place with everyone we know.
It might be one of the best restaurants in Texas. From the old 70s style theme to the sweet ladies taking orders and passing out rolls and homemade whip cream on your cobbler - it’s central Texas at its finest. Roast chicken was spectacular, and everything is now fried in beef tallow?? Amazing. All you can eat sides and cobbler. What more could you want in a restaurant? Worth the stop. Worth the drive.
I love old style cafeteria restaurants and this one is exceptional! We drove through on a road trip and stopped to eat here. Both the fried chicken and the roast chicken are moist and delicious! Also the steak is good too! All the sides and the rolls are delicious! My favorite thing though is the housemade whipped cream! The cobblers were all good! The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is great!
YUM YUM YUM! Visited 3/8/25 for a late lunch/early supper. Have driven by for years but finally visited and it was worth the wait. The food was absolutely delicious. We ate like kings for a very good price. Staff was warm, friendly and hospitable. In the dining rooms, employees came around with carts offering hot fresh rolls (superb), extra ice for drinks, whipped cream for cobblers, to go boxes, etc. Bathrooms were small but clean. Lovely music provided a nice backdrop to a hearty meal. Can’t wait to visit again. Highly recommend!!
You need to try Underwoods, an old style cafeteria that focuses on barbecue. I very much enjoyed the German sausage dinner that included two sides. The tea was fresh brewed, and ice was small flakes. However, the best touch was the table service for tea and the young lady coming around with freshly baked hot rolls to all tables. Nice touch

This is a great location. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I love their food. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Great chicken! Did you know that Underwood's sells more chicken than KFC!\nSo we'll deliver.
We got takeout. The bbq is hard to beat! We will be back. The staff was both friendly and nice.

Best fried chicken in town. The service was on top of their game and never let my glass get empty. Offered free rolls. Will definitely be going back soon.

Underwood's claim to fame is that Colt McCoy (famous Texas Longhorns QB) used to dine here, but the real McCoy are their fresh and hot dinner rolls that literally melt when you touch them. Their peach cobbler with fresh-made whipped cream is fantastic too. Everything else is average but still good. Expect $10/person for a square meal.
It’s good for what they advertise, hot rolls and cobbler but the real value was the staff. If it were just the food I wouldn’t have been super impressed but the waitstaff, the bussers, line folks were just as sunny and kind as Texas is big. We felt so welcomed and it was like going to Grandmas who always has your favorite homemade cookies and serves you a hearty but so-so meal. Go there for a warm hug if Texas hospitality, load up and try everything - it’s worth the trip.
I have been going to underwoods for a lot of years and I always order the barbecue chicken. But on this day the chicken was horrible. It was tough and had no flavor. Even the rolls did not taste the same. I don't know what's going on over there looks like they need a new cook.Because on that particular day the food was not good. I was so disappointed. I drove 30 miles out of my way to go eat there and it was not a good experience.. my great aunt would drive out of her way to go eat it underwoods. She has long passed (15yr) now. That's how good it used to be.. I'm very disappointed.
Always a great place to stop. The beef steak was not great, but the chicken and sausage and all the fixings were above average. The service was even better.
Stopped by on the way from Austin to Lubbock. The lady looked up this cafeteria as a good place to eat. We know Day Tripper, Texas Bucket List and Texas Country Reporter have all visited. We just beat the Sunday rush. When you wind through the line up to the serving area, you pick one protein and you can have as many sides as you want. The proteins include roasted 1/2 chicken, 1/2 spicy roasted chicken, ham, chicken fried steak, fried chicken, and a bbq beef. Pick one, they serve. The self serve sides included coleslaw, potato salad, rolls, green beans, carrots, mashed potatoes, three kinds of cobbler, etc. , plus drinks. I had the roasted chicken side and it was cooked perfectly, tender with a crispy skin. The coleslaw was great. Green beans are green beans. I would have enjoyed a tossed salad but didn't see it offered. The lady like the chicken friend steak. The teenager like the slab of ham. The servers walk around the tables refilling drinks and offering more rolls. It was packed and a fun place to visit. We will stop again.
Cafeteria style bbq, fried chicken and fried catfish. Definitely Texas country fare. Wife loved the catfish. My brother and I had the combo plate. The BBQ steak was OK, the rib very good and the sausage was fine. Sides were excellent. Looking forward to trying other things on the menu when we return to Brownwood.
This used to be a good place to eat. Not so much anymore. I almost got choked on a small bone. There shouldn't be any on ribs. Food quality has gone downhill. Also had a sign on a door at the service…

Like going back in time, in a good way. Reminds me of the cafeterias that were everywhere across the South. They are hard to find these days. The rolls are fantastic.

If you want to go based on how long it's been in business or something else, go but don't go because your looking for BbQ. At best the sampler plate is a baked meat dish with your choice of sausage Very nice people but the service was a little slower paced than most restaurants. Let's get down to the MEAT of it all. If you want fried chicken you may be lucky but looked good but I didn't try it. However, if us seasoned like the meat, I would say it's a hard pass The "steak" was tender and the pork rib fell off the bone but everything was bland. The sides looked good but they tasted bland. The only positive thing I can report is that the jalepeno sausage was probably not made there because it was really good. Oh they make their own Whipped topping. So $40 for two people and the best thing we tried was a piece of sausage and a scoop of whipped topping. If the second best BBQ restaurant in this town is worse than this I wouldn't even bother stopping anywhere in this town. I almost forgot, the upside to this restaurant is that they do offer Stevia as a sweetener option.
BBQ spare ribs were ok. Lots of sides but not outstanding. They were good. The rolls were top notch. As far as BBQ, i would say so so.
Overall a nice small town option. Pros: Roasted chicken was DELICIOUS Mashed potatoes were good Unlimited sides and free drink refills Cobbler was good but the highlight was the whipped cream The staff were so friendly and helpful! Cons: Corn and green beans seemed to be straight from a can. No flavor added to them or the cooked carrots. Cobbler seemed like the peaches were also from a can. Ribs were moist but most of the flavor came from the sauce. We only tried the roasted chicken and ribs so I cannot speak for any other meat options.
Long time, Customer, who just ate at your location at 4:20 PM on Friday, January 16, 2026. Food was good as usual however, the service in the dining room was terrible. The girl cleaning the tables never brought any extra tea and never looked up to see if anyone wanted whipped cream for over 40 minutes while she cleaned five tables. She did not Offer one customer any drink refills nor did anyone get any whipped cream during the time I was there. I’m not sure I will recommend the place again if Service remains the same. Stopped in and first off, the bathroom urinal was out of order, cleanliness and lack of maintenance was the worst i have ever seen in the 40 years I have visited. Employees were not practicing covi…
I had the chicken fried steak and for $20 for a chicken fried steak, super thin frozen meat, not even hand breaded. Mashed potatoes tasted like instant, was very disappointed, not sure what all the hype is about this place.....won't eat there again.
My wife and I stopped in to eat on our way to Lubbock. I have eaten here many times in my youth, 40 years ago, and was looking forward to another taste. The ribs were so so but the rest of the meal, the sampler, was not good. The mashed potatoes were inedible. 2 stars are for the cobbler and the service. Won’t stop there again.

The best thing was the roll. My chicken fried steak did not even taste as good as the ones that make for school lunch. It was luke warm. Coleslaw and green beans were the second best. I would n…
service people were nice and it is is an “interesting” landmark of Brownwood with its retro cowboy sign. Otherwise it is just sad. The tired interior, dismal looking cafeteria style food, grubby …
Instant mashed potatoes - instant fake gravy - chicken fried steak pre cooked breaded frozen crap . Couldn't stomach half of it . Horrible instant BS .
Dined in January 13th around 5 p.m..Had chicken wings green beans and carrots. The wings were not done. The sides were not even warm with zero flavor. Been there several times during the summer with work crews. This was an experience I will never again experience.
I really wanted to like this place since we saw that the rating is high 4.5 out 5 stars. I don’t write reviews but I felt like this time it’s a Must!! Green beans ( no flavor, from a can) Corn from a can n no flavor. Mash potatoes are not homemade!! Chicken so dry, salty. Ribs very small pieces almost no meat :/ Peach clover was also so disappointing and the whip cream again from a container. It’s extremely overpriced for what you get… The place inside doesn’t look like a dinner but more like a old Italian restaurant. HEB barbecue it’s 100 times better.
