Opinions de Copenhagen Bakery & Cafe Burlingame
Copenhagen Bakery & Cafe is an absolute gem, and their Swedish Princess Cake is hands down the star of the show. Light, elegant, and beautifully crafted, it’s everything a true Princess Cake should be—fluffy sponge layers, luscious pastry cream, a delicate touch of raspberry jam, and that perfectly smooth dome of green marzipan dusted with powdered sugar. It’s not just a dessert, it’s an experience. You can taste the care and tradition in every bite. Whether you’re Scandinavian or just appreciate exceptional European pastries, this cake is a must-try. The bakery itself has a cozy, old-world charm with friendly staff and a wide selection of baked goods and cafe fare. But no matter what else you get, do yourself a favor and get a slice of the Princess Cake—you’ll be dreaming about it for days!
very,,very,,great people work there, i like the fact that they have bi-lingual reps. working there,👍i want to share pict. of a quince cake, it was stunning just exactly as a picture i showed them, omg i didn't think it was gonna be this beautiful..thx so much to Yessica she helped with my order, she is very helpful, and had patience on my order..lol..👌🥰🌷👍
Awesome danish pastry bakery and restaurant. My second visit and definitely coming back.
The best danish pastries and baked goods. The restaurant part is good for breakfast, brunch, lunch. Want a coffee and a slice of beautiful cake? Sit outside and enjoy.
Ordered a bday cake for my kids bday party and it was an absolute delight. I asked for a quote online and was promptly answered. Cake decorator followed my instructions to the point and the cake turned out to be exactly as I wanted. It wasn’t too sweet (like Safeway cakes) which everyone liked. Also, it was ready on time for pickup. Thank you to the cake decorator who made my kid’s day! 😊
Best danish I've ever eaten, light and flakey and not too sweet. Also tried the shrimp omelette, the danish pancakes, the sourdough toast, and a cappuccino. Huge servings, quick service, simple delicious home-style food made to order. You MUST try the lingonberry jam, it is incredible. The cappuccino was mediocre but hey it's a bakery not a coffee shop. I've never thought of shrimp in an omelette but it was grilled perfectly and tasted great. We will be back!
Great food. You need to order at the register then they bring the food which is always good. Sometimes the service falls off after food delivery like "how's the food", "do you need more water" isn't a concern to them. The have great sliced sourdough toast and you can get your own loaf to go.
Not sure how people could spend anywhere under 10 minutes deciding and under $10 out of their pocket when visiting here! Everything is done with such detail to elevate the customer experience that you really just wonder what excuses you’ll need to find to come back often enough to try everything. Loved how the raspberry puff was flavorful but light and fluffy and the coconut marzipan have all these different layers to it. Will absolutely be back in bringing friends...The rum cake and anything with apricot/chocolate is next on my list!
My cousin took me here when I visited. OMG I wanted to take home one of everything from the bakery. We had lunch and it was delicious. Great service and surroundings.
By far an amazing experience seeing the many different varieties of pastries they offer and the staff was all welcoming, kind and patient while my daughter and I looked over every options multiple times before placing our order, thank you
Fresh, flaky pastries and warm service every time. Their éclairs are my favorite in the area light, not too sweet, and perfectly chocolatey. Highly recommend!
Guadalupe was amazing and awesome!!! She helped me and my daughter in law order a wedding cake. We wanted the Princess Cake, and the sample was delicious. I'll write an update after the wedding. The entire process so far has been very smooth and easy. As an update, they did an amazing job with the princess cake. The pictures don't do it justice. We had many reviews from all the guests.
Outstanding food and service. My husband enjoyed the Royal Lunch and I ordered the Copenhagen cheeseburger. The Royal Lunch was 3 x 1/2 sandwiches with a small side salad. He ordered Roast Beef, Black Forest Ham, and German Balogna with a yummy cucumber salad. All were fresh and beautifully presented. We were here to pick up a birthday so we loaded up on pastries and cookies for gifts. We're already planning our return for dinner.
My closest place to get princess cake in san mateo area. Quick service. I ordered through the holiday not knowing if they would ever make it on time, but they got it perfectly. Marzipan was a bit too sweet but other than that it tasted okay. Asked to put the heart after my husband's name and they put a really cute heart on it. I love it!
They cakes are delicious. I purchased my birthday cake from them. It was a Vanilla cake with buttercream icing with raspberry buttercream filled. We loved it!!! I would recommend this place. They also deliver and make speciality cakes. The staff was so hospitable and pleasant. I recommend this place for sure.
If you want a taste of a genuine Danish bakery, this is the spot. Their pastries are ridiculously good—super flaky and buttery, and they don't hold back on the fillings. My kids absolutely love this place so we head here for treats on any given weekend.
This location quickly accommodated our very large group without hesitation after we couldn't go to a restaurant down the street who was over booked. They were very kind, got food out very quickly, and the food was fairly good. Would definitely recommend this place to other large groups, though probably call ahead first!
Everything was fresh and beautifully presented. Food tasted great. All of the staff members were nice and helpful. The setting was well lit for indoors, and the outdoors seating area was also nice and clean. You order first and get a number before sitting down. Food was made to order and brought out to us. Would definitely recommend to everyone to try.
Update...my birthday. Received a german chocolate cake. Absolutely delicious. Perfect balance of cake and frosting. Coconut was fresh. YUMMY. OLD REVIEW.Bought a Mocha Cake here for my partners birthday. Wow, it was beautiful and tasted even better. Classic cake that was delicious. Everything I have had at the bakery has been 💯 delicious. Def will go back again,
Consistently excellent. The service is friendly and helpful. The seating area has old world charm and pleasant presentation. We had not here for a few years and half-expected the quality to have gone down as it has with so many of our favorite eateries during Covid. We were so pleasantly surprised to find that Copenhagen Bakery is at least as good as ever, possibly even better. The napoleon is my favorite and it is executed to perfection. We also had the florentine which was excellent, the princess cake (fresh and delicious) and the Sara Bernhardt (sublime). All I can say is I am glad I don’t live too close or I would be here every day!
European bakery in the heart of silicon valley. Sublime Princess Cake and Hazelnut express and rum cake and on and on.. Wash it down with a large selection of fresh brewed coffee. Good sugar and caffeine high. Breezy ambience. Always packed and noisy. Good service. Just a perfect neighborhood bakery.
yummy all the way very delicious everything . Today I got the very tasty swiss cheese and mushroom omelet. It came with heavenly delicious breakfast potatos.and toast I also ordered a diet coke and to take home a slice of lemon cake and raspberry danish . I highly recommend this place
Obsessed. My friends and I had dinner nearby and then we were taking a walk and even though we were pretty full from our lovely dinner, I needed to stop here. We got a couple of desserts, the princess cake and a cake that was on special. I really really wanted to buy their chocolate almond coffee cake but I resisted, until this weekend. When I went back. And got the chocolate almond coffee cake. Let me be clear, the chocolate almond coffee cake is absolutely amazing. I had to cut it up and give it to friends or I would have eaten the whole thing! I could eat anything and everything in this place.
My sister had a layover in San Francisco between flying out of the country, so we dropped in to have a bite to eat. She enjoy the food and the service was great as well she loved the bakery along with the atmosphere.
Overall, I absolutely love it! Such a fantastic bakery — highly recommend to everyone!
Had the Cherry Hammentaschen which is something I have only read about before. It's like traveling to Denmark. The french roast coffee was tasty but kinda weak and uninspiring. Get a little closer to the coffe grounds guys. Other than that highly recommended.
I had breakfast before on the restaurant side of this long established shop. This time I went in the bakery side just as they were opening, and it's like I stepped into a contemporary bakery somewhere in Europe. I sampled several items, creme filled éclaire, custard filled puff, and a crunchy Florentine type of roll with coffee creme in it. Delish! I've found these Eurostyle bakeries elsewhere in the US and they really struggle to get the crispy freshness of butter doughs, rich cremes, and crumbly cookies that are typical on the continent. This shop totally nails them! I would say get these early in the morning to get them fresh. There are also a wide variety of danishes and cakes, which I can't speak to, but visually seem to match more of an American palate.
Copenhagen is a great bakery. They have amazing options. The quality is consistently great. They also served a great food, chef Gerardo is one of the best in the industry with many years of experience. Highly recommended.
My friends and I went to this place admittedly because the place we originally wanted to go was too packed (I dont care much for crowded places), and im glad we did. Im fairly picky when it comes to desserts. I bought three different desserts to try and honestly they were all amazing. Its definitely become one of my favorite dessert/ pastry places. I want to try all of them now!
I love this place. Warm and inviting ambiance with amazing music. It was a perfect end to our evening. We went for pastries and received excellent service and advice on what to try. The Princess Cake IS as amazing as we were told. I also loved the Whipped Cream Eclair (it was so light) and the Cinnamon Crispie. Street parking right out front is free in the evening. My only disappointment was that they closed at 9pm on a Friday. This bakery has been here since the 70s for a reason. Give it a try if you haven't already. You won't be disappointed.
I tried a lot of bakeries in the San Francisco Bay area, and this is the best for Danish, pastries. Their breads are excellent, as are their sweets. However, their cookies are good, but not great. The dining room menu is wide-ranging and well priced. The staff are cheerful and helpful. A great place in general, but an absolute must-visit for Danish.
With Eurocentric curb appeal with a nice bakery and cafe, a broad variety of options are available. The soup and sandwich combo and apple turnover were exceptional. Staff was friendly, but with several counters available to place orders, made it a bit challenging for first-timers like me to figure out where to go.
I ordered a custom cake from Copenhagen bakery & cafe for my second daughter’s birthday, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. The cake was absolutely stunning—it truly came to life just as I had imagined. Every detail was perfect, and it made the celebration extra special. A big thank you to Guadalupe, who was incredibly helpful throughout the entire process. She was attentive, kind, and made sure everything went smoothly. Highly recommend Copenhagen for anyone looking for beautiful, delicious cakes and excellent customer service!
They have 4-5 styles of gluten-free pastries, which I ordered to go. So good. I wish they would display them separately instead of interspersing them amongst everything else. But that’s my own selfish wish. It would be nice if ladies behind the counter can be more friendly, even though they weren’t rude.
Even though we have visited Solvang several times, this was our first time eating here. We were lucky there was no line when we arrived, but shortly after, a long line formed. The outdoor space is nice, and they offer a good selection of beer. We do wish they offered more options for beef and chicken sausages.
The portion sizes you receive even you eat in the Cafe are very generous. Great value for your money. But I go out of my way and think of excuses to drive to Burlingame from SF to go to the bakery side of this shop. What gets me to make this trek you ask? 100% The French Waffle!!! It is light, crispy layers and layers of puff pastry with just the right amount of super fluffy whip cream in between to "waffles". I am so addicted to these that I am will to drive someone to the airport at 6am just to be able to stop and pick one up after I've dropped them off.
We come here every time we go to/from the airport. They have the best pastries! I love all their cakes, the banana surprise, cookies, and brownies. Sitting outside is so lovely, great people watching, and great service! Best grilled chicken sandwich I’ve ever had! And love their Denver omelette. 10/10
Absolutely amazing these are some of the best cakes I've ever had. The princess cake is exceptional. Highly recommend you try it. My boyfriend said this was the best cake he ever had.

Such a wonderful bakery. We absolutely love the chocolate wreath cake. \nVery busy but for obvious reasons. Their treats are amazing.

It was great to stop in for the first time in a year! The baked goods are as delicious as ever, and the staff goes out of their way to welcome customers.
Love sitting outside to people watch. Like how there's is various coffee refills. Pastries and breakfast are yummy
My wife and I lived in San Carlos for over a decade, and during that time, we’d drive about 20 minutes north almost every Sunday for breakfast at Copenhagen. It became a regular weekend tradition. The breakfast is consistently good—I’m a big fan of their huevos rancheros—and the coffee hits the spot. We’ve also ordered a few birthday cakes from their bakery over the years, which were always a hit. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the staff has always been friendly. It’s a solid spot for both breakfast and baked goods. Definitely worth a try
Wide selection and availability Reliable crowd pleaser. I don't get exactly get excited about it, but it's better than store bought and a go to spot to get goodies for the office when you don't have time to wait in line and gamble The croissants at Baukhaus are better (buttery flakey crunch) but those sell out, and the selection is limited. Here they are not bad, and there's a lot of other muffins fruit danishes and other pastries
Originally, I thought I wouldn’t be satisfied with the tuna salad for brunch, but after finishing the meal with a delicious decaf coffee, I was actually perfectly full. The only reason why I give it 4 stars, is because the salad had canned beets, canned carrots, and canned pickles. Thus, it didn’t taste very fresh. However, I also tried the dark chocolate pyramid desert for $6.25, which was absolutely delicious! I would definitely get that desert again!
After tasting the Princess Cake from this bakery, I became a fan since last year. I decided to order two customized cakes for two people. I asked for a quote a week prior and sent some pictures. The end product looked very close to the pictures I sent ... except the mushroom was missing its eyes. Without the eyes, it doesn't look like a 1up mushroom at all. It just looks like a regular mushroom. We ended up having to wait 45 mins on a Friday evening just for the eyes because they had some trouble and the baker wasn't around. Overall, the cake looks amazing! Everyone wanted to take pictures with them and they were wowed by it. Unfortunately, it did not taste as good as it looked. Out of the 3 cakes we had at the party, everyone agreed the generic one tasted the best. Not sure if I'd do this again but the reactions from people seeing the cake definitely takes the cake!
Very disorganized line up system but this was a generous treat from a dear friend… Cake was good !
This is lovely cafe in Burlingame downtown. We went there in thd evening and it was raining. Nice ambience. Not crowded. Food - We had a cold coffee and it was nice. Enjoyed sipping. We had hot chocolate drink too. This was warm and nice. The blueberry pastry was good. The cafe is famous for its European style ambience and European flavoured cakes and pasteries. The cafe is bustling with crowd in the mornings for breakfast.
Probably the best dinner deal in town. The short rib was so tender I’m not sure why they even bothered giving me a steak knife — a fork or butter knife was plenty. The chicken schnitzel had good flavor, and while the Caesar was just okay, for the price, I can't complain. I’ll definitely return.
Copenhagen is one of those rare places where everything just feels right. From morning coffee to pastries, sandwiches, and breads, every visit is a joy. The breakfast is always fresh and satisfying, with crepes and eggs that taste even better when enjoyed outside on the sunny sidewalk. What makes Copenhagen truly special for our family is the bakery itself. My mom is 100% Danish, and for her, this is the closest experience to the baked goods she grew up with back home. Week after week, she brings home a French loaf, baguettes, and poppyseed rolls—the kind of breads that make a simple meal with cold cuts and cheese feel like a little piece of Denmark. Those are our absolute favorites, and we can never get enough of them. The pastries and sweets are as beautiful as they are delicious, and the sandwiches make for a perfect lunch—generous, flavorful, and thoughtfully made. The coffee is excellent too: always brewed fresh, with that perfect balance of warmth and energy to start the day. The service couldn’t be friendlier, and there’s something wonderful about sitting outside, enjoying good food, good coffee, and good company. For us, Copenhagen isn’t just a bakery; it’s a bridge between California and Denmark, and a place where every meal feels a little bit special.

We've been coming here for over 10 years. Always loved their food as well as the items from the bakery. Unfortunately, food quality from the cafe has gone down in the last couple of visits. The first time, I figured it's a one-off. Last week, went for breakfast again and left feeling very disappointed. The hash brown barely had any crispy crust and the omelet was bland. Instead of avocado as listed on the menu, it was a scoop of tasteless guacamole. It's a hard pass on the cafe from now on.
Tried their special of the day which is strawberry cake with whipped cream. It’s good. Light and subtle but felt it lacked something.
Had to get in a line only to be handed the menu when it was my time to order. Had no idea what to pick as I did not know what they had so I asked the rude cashier a couple minutes and to let someone else order before I was ready. When I was finally ready they had my order wrong (asked for salad on the side of my pastrami sandwich and they sent fruit salad) and they completely ignored that I ordered a hot chocolate and didn't send anything at all. At that point was pretty annoyed to complain or ask for replacement so I just let it go. The sandwich was okay but not sure I would come back. There are likely good breakfast places out there.
It was my kid birthday, so I ordered to-go instead of dine-in because we will celebrate at home. I pointed at one of their items which looked like a chocolate cake slices (their label are misleading or missing, so I didn’t get the name of what I want). The staff that waited on me mistook what I want and got me a chocolate brownie instead. We didn’t know about this until we got home and opened the sealed box after dinner. By this time, we just accepted it because we wouldn’t want to drive all the way back to the bakery just for a refund or exchange. My kid still got to blow the candles, but he wouldn’t eat that brownie. It was a birthday celebration failure. Other than that, they have a wide range selection of cakes, bread and pastries. They all looked delicious.
I made a reservation for 7 pm (they are open until 9 pm) & arrived few minutes early. I opted to sit at an outside table & was the last guest seated outdoors. By the time I finished my table was the only one occupied outdoors while the inside of the cafe was mild/moderately busy. Service was friendly, order arrived quickly. Waitress stopped by to check on me once, but then I never saw her again. I was out there for quite a while before I saw a busser clearing tables was able to request a take-home box. After boxing up my leftovers, I waited another 10-15 minutes for my bill but it never came. I then went into the bakery & waited for another 3-5 minutes for any employee to ask for my bill to pay for my meal. Was still never presented with a bill, but oddly enough the employee at the register knew what meal I had ordered, mentioned it by name and & waited for me to confirm. I let him know my waitress disappeared & he apologized, but I will not be returning there again based on the waitresses disappearing act.
I have been coming here for YEARS. It had always been my favorite place. I little Denmark for my mother and I. Now it is a bit disappointing. The crepes are not the same. Low quality. I don't know if the change owner, cook.... It really made me sad. Services was great, atmosphere still feels awesome.
We had a couple of sandwiches, that were fine, but nothing special. Then, we had coffe an tea (ok both) with a raspberry half-moon, and a raspberry puff. The first was OK, on the dry side, the second had an OK filling, although the puff's dough was soggy. Both came with a "chocolate" cover (the acid test!): a dark, greasy, hard thing with no taste whatsoever. Verdict: too expensive for barely OK quality. Santa Barbara's Anderson comes to mind as a much better Danish place.

Bought a slice of cake to go. Coconut pineapple, so dry crumbled when you put the fork in it to take a bite. If it’s in the display case and you’re selling it at full price, it should be fresh. Their apricot pie is excellent.
I love this place and been going for 3 yrs now. My party and I were asked to leave cuz as three men we were not supposed to sit on a table of four. When asked about and alternative seat I was dismissed. We decided to leave because of the experience. I confronted the waitress who asked us to go and her defense was that she asked others as well. We were three men and the table right next to us had a similar situation and none of us remembers being asked. I hope this does not become the standard of service

Another overrated total mediocre place in SF which is totally overpriced. Selling bullshit Danish and croissants for $8 a pop
We placed an order for a custom princess cake four days ahead of time, so we expected it to be ready without issue. When we showed up to pick it up, the staff told us they couldn’t find the order and that the cake had not been made. Not only was there no apology, but the manager who spoke with us was dismissive and rude, simply saying, “well, we don’t have the order.” To top it off, after all that, we bought a small pastry just to salvage something from the visit and they had the audacity to ask us to leave a tip. A tip? For what exactly? Failing to fulfill our order? Copenhagen Bakery has seriously declined since the ownership changed hands. Some of the longtime employees may still be around, but unfortunately, the tone and standards clearly come from management.
Why on earth dont you have any prices ?!!!! Customer don’t even know how much a cup of coffee costs! We took the palmier and an almond croissant with a few lame almond slices on top. Both were dry and tasteless. I am French and know my croissants. Obviously the lady at the cash register was tired of having to give prices for every single item…
DISAPPOINTED! I have been buying Princess Cakes from Copenhagen over the years but my purchase of a Princess Cake $76 last week was terrible. The inside of the cake was a lot of custard & whipped cream and very minimal cake. It looked liked they ran out of cake & just made up for it with a lot of custard & cream. It is not even close to my previous purchases. See for yourself the attached comparative pictures.
How are you going to call yourself “Copenhagen Bakery” and not have kardemommesnurre or kanelsnegle?!!! 🤯 I got the regular cinnamon pastry with the linzers. Both were very dry and disappointing. Also, how do you justify charging nearly $4 for a small 7-11 coffee?
We ordered a chocolate cake and the cake was very very dry. The cake overall was low quality. It was a total disappointment on my birthday.
I purchased a cake from this bakery that was absolutely stale. The icing to cake ratio was completely off. There was barely any cake in a pile of icing. Whatever cake was there was also stale. It was powdery. Couldn't pick it up with a fork as it would fall apart. They need to have some sort of sell by or baked on date. So disappointed. It's an absolute waste of money and an embarrassment to serve this cake to guests. Additionaly, the staff is disengaging and rude. They just don't care about the customers.
