Opinions de Madeline's Restaurant and Wine Shop Cambria
We whimpered. It was that good. The mussels were small but the flavor BIG. Chef David did some lemony mustardy magic, and with an order of bread… ahhh. Short ribs tartine, Duck Confit Salad , Blackened Halibut- sighs and more whimpers. The atmosphere was intimate but lovely, and Melanie was a pro server- informed, fun, and attentive . There was happiness.
The staff was fantastic especially Giovanni. We showed up before 5pm and we were sat down and served quickly. My wife loved the wine that was selected for her with her duck....it was our first time there and we will return on our next visit to the area.
What a gem! This place has it all: cozy romantic ambiance, attentive and personable staff, and incredible food. We shared the venison cakes, one of their specials, and were blown away. The portions were generous too. We'll definitely be back to try more.
After eating at some less than stellar restaurants in the Cambria area we made a reservation at Madeline’s. As soon as we walked inside we knew it was going to be different. It was beautifully decorated and crowded ( guess everyone knows this is the place to eat well), and there were mouth watering aromas. I had salmon and my husband had fillet mignon and both dishes were cooked perfectly. Service was quick and friendly. Definitely an all positive experience. Highly recommend this restaurant.
I was on the way from Hearst Castle and really lucky to visit this place which offers really outstanding food, for example an excellent octopus appetizer. Then the wine selection is really truly impressive, with special labels from Paso Robles even by the glass, and at less than $20 per glass. And they are very polite and prompt. What else can you ask for?
So this week in Cambria after finding this local gem, I never go elsewhere. I come here for lunch, afternoon wine and then dinner, 3x a day 😆 for a couple days First night: Haven’t had duck 🦆 breast cooked this perfectly in a very, very long time. Next day lunch: had pork belly burger 🍔 it’s sooo crispy !! Second night: Tonight the filet mignon was absolutely the best I’ve had in a long long time, paired with their own wine “Madeline’s cab” this meal was truly 10/10. There’s was one last bottle left, therefore I brought it home 🥳
Had fantastic time eating here, the atmosphere was impeccable comparing to other places. The staff stole the show how awesome they were with amazing service an professionalism. Our waiter Geo take absolute care of us. Thank you for the amazing time can't wait to come back to Cambria for more!!
I don't have enough stars to grade this restaurant. From service, to food and ambience, it is a 11/10. I don't find duck breasts everywhere cooked properly. In fact, this is the first place in the US that I found the closest to what I can only find in France. Needless to say, a pleasant surprise! Do reserve in advance though. We were accommodated without a reservation, but it was very busy on a Sunday night.
A fantastic, quaint restaurant on downtown Cambria's Main Street. Amazing food, great wait staff, and a cozy atmosphere. We had the frog leg appetizer, stuffed chicken breast, venison sirloin, and three-layer chocolate cake. Excellent wine and port choices. And a very tolerant and friendly wait staff. Definitely a must-visit in Cambria and a wonderful place for date night. We'll be back!
This place had cuisine so remarkable I cried. As I have been to France many times and am quite a cook myself, this restaurant was a delightful gem nestled in the heart of Cambria, CA. I have had challenges finding authentic French affair anywhere outside of La France. This place... gracious me... just reminded me of tastes you can typically only find in Europe. The foods were fresh and bold. Full of flavour, with plenty of butter in the expected fashion! My scallops were a mesmerizing start to my meal. Fresh. Perfectly seared. Mildly 'sweet' with subtle hints of sage and the salty sea. I really just wanted an entire bowl of the scallops alone. I would have been blessed. I did not have to force myself to choose the warm baby spinach salad. Baby greens with a bright vinaigrette, toasted pecans and dried cranberry. Fresh mozzarella slices. Micro-thin red onion. Just a wonderful way to clean the palate before main course. This establishment is known for its filet mignon, though, I had filet the previous evening. I decided upon the chicken breast stuffed with brie, among other savory offerings. The thin skin was delicately crisp. The flesh... fork-tender. The filling just splendid and truly, on-point. Service was remarkable with smiles and friendly staff all around. If I could go there every day, I certainly would. I was delighted beyond expectation.
This was our first time at Madeline's Restaurant and we loved it. Such an intimate setting inside, warm and inviting. The staff was all very friendly and helpful. The food was amazing! Their cream of mushroom soup is amazing, so flavorful and the chicken stock base keeps the soup less dense than regular cream. Their chicken dish and fresh fish catch of the day dinners were cooked really well, loads of flavor and beautiful presentation. And dessert...omg...the raspberry key lime pie was SOO good!!
A wonderful fine dining experience, with all the best wine choices to pair, if you like wine. It was our Christmas dinner, and we were super happy with our meal. The service was excellent, fast, and attentive (Angel was our server). I had one of the day's special, an absolutely perfect salmon, and my partner had the chicken, stuffed with mushroom, spinach and brie, with a side of market vegetables, and potatoes "gratin dauphinois" style. My salmon also came with vegetables, and saffron rice. All in all a great experience!!
Madeline's brings together a fantastic atmosphere, delightful service, and delicious food. From the appetizers to the dessert, we felt comfortably attended to by our fantastic server (Cody). The Spanish Octopus and Diver Scallops were top tier. The mushroom soup of the day was amongst the best we have had. The duck was great, the halibut (catch of the day) was perfectly cooked and seasoned, and the bone in veal chop was splendid. The dessert was also amazing. The chocolate mousse cake and bananas foster were great, but the vanilla creme brûlée was unbelievable - easily in the top 3 of past creme brûlée experiences. Overall, pay this fine establishment a visit. You will be glad you did.
Found this restaurant with a Google search and noticed reviews were hit-or-miss, so we took a chance to see where it landed...for a birthday event. Between the halibut and stuffed chicken, we were at 50%. We ended up swapping meals to see if one was more palatable. The stuffed chicken, which was recommended by others, was overdone. I ended up with it having originally ordered the halibut. The chicken also had blue cheese in the stuffing, which isn't my favorite. The server nicely discounted the stuffed chicken as the ends were too chewy to eat. The halibut was a bit salty but was cooked nicely and gad giid flavor. The sides were ok but with a little TLC, it could have been better. The dessert, a flour-free, chocolate cake, was kind of average but was free for the birthday celebration. The location is convenient at the end of downtown and the ambiance is nice. The server was very accommodating and friendly. Unfortunately it wasn't a successful event.
Good American food is served at this cozy restaurant in Cambria. We went to Madeline’s Restaurant for dinner on Christmas Eve and really enjoyed our meal. We ordered the bruschetta and Madeline’s salad for appetizers. They were both good. For the entrees we had the NY Strip Au Poivre, the Lamb Shank and the Duck. They were all very good. And for dessert we ordered the apple crumble and raspberry key lime pies. Overall we really enjoyed our meal. The service was friendly and efficient.
Some local recommended Madelines. It is located in downtown Cambria. Lots of free parking and handicap parking. There is outdoor or indoor seating. Interior is charming with rows of wines from all over the world. Table setting had white tablecloths and napkins. Our lunch server was Melanie. She was very nice, attentive and pleasant. The lunch menu is limited. Our order took half an hour to be served which is why they recieved 3 stars. The food made up for the long wait. The duck and champignon confit appetizer was delicious. For entres we both ordered the wild mushroom tartine. His side was the acorn soup which was very delicious.
Madeline's Restaurant & Wine Cellar in Cambria provides a warm atmosphere, cozy hospitality, and polished service. The restaurant serves homemade French/American cuisine as well as an array of international flavors made from farmers' market fresh ingredients. The menu changes seasonally, but you can expect to find fresh seafood, locally sourced meats, and vegetarian dishes. Our meal started with some bread and cheese. The bread was soft and easy to break. The cheese was not the easiest to spread, but it was delicious. My friend and I split one serving of their daily special soup (tomato basil soup). The soup was a bit watered down but very flavorful. My friend tried their Louisiana seafood gumbo. Seafood was fresh, but the gumbo was a bit salty. The portion size was decent. I got their Lamb Sirloin. Lamb was cooked nicely, but it was mostly bland because the chimichuri sauce was very watered down and barely stayed on the meat. Mashed potatoes were okay; a bit chunky and not as creamy. The service was fast. Our server was very good and attentive. If you are in the Cambria area, then it's worth checking out this place.
New Years eve dinner in 2024/25 tasted pretty good, but left me "ringing in" the new year for the worse. Most likely, it was the Diver's scallop amuse bouche. Oh well, out with the bad. We foolishly decided to try another new year's eve 2025/26 because on the menu was Lobster Thermidor, a near-forgotten delicacy that I love. We stood in the doorway for some time while the host ignored us. Someone else came up to seat us and the pre fixe meal began. The amuse bouche, appetizer, soup and salad were all good. Not great, but not enough to complain about. The flavor was lacking, but we didn't fuss. The staff was busy, however they all but disappeared when the lobster arrived. An overcooked lump stuck in its shell with a wisp of dried out, curdled sauce. Not only was that NOT lobster thermidor, it was not edible. I could not cut it or get it out of its shell. There was a smear of polenta (I think) and some overcooked vegetable and that's it. The busboy noticed and apologized to me. No one else came near us, as we were noticeably very unhappy and not eating our entrée. We paid the high amount without being able to speak to anyone, and left a note, a call and another call. No one bothered to answer or assuage us in any way. Cambria is our go-to spot for a lovely new year, but Madeline's is permanently off the list for us forever.
I was so excited to spend my birthday here , on paper this restaurant seemed fine dinning , good overall reviews , presentation online seemed nice , location was quaint, and when we got there I felt welcomed and cared for but all that changed as soon as we sat , my daughter's drink was never delivered until I asked for it missing utensils etc little details that make the experience a great one , then came the food , as a chef I can recognized the food quality was great as far as ingredients go, the execution on the other hand left a lot a lot to be desired , I asked for a medium filet mignon and got almost well done , the demi glazed was a watery mess , potatoes were garlic and I found a chunk of a piece in mine uncooked. The rest of my party was not impressed with food either , again ingredients were top notch but something was a miss. Then back to the service drinks were not refilled until we had to request , our waiter left for long periods with only 2 parties in the dinning room this seemed unacceptable, it was my birthday so they comped me a dessert , sadly it was equally disastrous as the food , I am a pastry chef so this was the nail on the coffin , an apple crumble where you taste the flour is a big oversight on preparation. So sadly while this restaurant has every opportunity to be a must visit spot in cambria , it lacks the discipline and execution to do so.
They are apparently known for their duck, so that's what I ordered. It was horribly undercooked. Not pink, and soft where it melts in your mouth like butter. It was raw. It was also so fatty and poorly prepared that I literally couldn't cut through it with a steak knife. I left half of it on the plate, and spit Some of it out because I literally couldn't chew it. The atmosphere was claustrophobic, dusty, not old world, just old. Not appealing or acceptable for the cost. Speaking of, the serving size also did not match the cost. Four green beans and 5 uncooked carrots SLICES as my vegetables. For the cost, are you kidding me!? This place was terrible. I do not recommend. Save your time, your taste-buds and your money and go somewhere else. Such a disappointment. I was at the main street location. Staff was friendly, nothing poor to say about them. But the food and atmosphere was terrible. DO NOT EAT HERE.
