Tempest is a classic restaurant in downtown Charleston in the heart of market Street. Overall, the experience from the staff to the food to the atmosphere. Happy hours phenomenal deal to try some of their classics. Their burger was well marinated, though slightly thin fries were delicious, thin and crispy shoestring style. The shrimp may have been the best part of the meal. Didn’t know that cocktail shrimp could be so perfectly cooked and so well marinated, served chilled with a delicious classic cocktail sauce. calamari was very thinly battered, perfectly cooked with no chewiness. Loved the aioli too though a little too citrusy. Pistachio wedge salad was super creamy, fun to get, but may not get every time. The dill flavor was nice. Fish tacos were a 1/5. The fish portion was small, under seasoned, and not flaky or buttery at all. The coleslaw was okay with pineapple hints but overall very very underwhelming, under seasoned, and extremely small portion for a $19 for only two.

What an amazing and beautiful restaurant - food is over the top. We had the braised short rib with the Irish whipped mashed potatoes, and they were amazing. Also, the roasted oysters definitely a pleasure with their own butter, garlic, scallion sauce. Joe at the bar and Isabel our waitress were so welcoming from the get go - The only thing better than the food was the service!

We came here for my oldest daughter’s birthday and it did not disappoint. The place is very cozy and the food was outstanding. The ocean rolls, which were ordered twice, were so good. We also had the calamari which was cooked perfectly. For entrees we had flounder, and several pastas. Desert was their version of a smore. Since I mentioned it was my daughter’s birthday they brought out a card wishing her a happy birthday and signed by the staff. Nice touch. I highly recommend coming here.

The experience was fantastic start to finish. We had calamari and their special rolls as appetizers… both fantastic. Steak frites and bolognese were both stellar. Finished off with pot de la creme desert and port… flawless. They offer a complimentary flower and brandy tasting at the end along with the history of -why- which was great as well. All through the way Bryce provided us with A++ service. 10/10 will be back.

I am normally pleasantly surprised by my experience with dining in Charleston. However, Ella and the fine folks at Tempest took it to a new level. The food was top notch and the environment was the perfect energy for a birthday dinner. Look forward to going back soon!

My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at Tempest and had the most amazing time! The meal was outstanding but what truly set the experience apart was the service--absolutely world class. We felt celebrated by the entire staff in a way that was really genuine. Tempest is on our list of places to return to on a future Charleston trip.

I’m so glad we found this place! Our server was so kind and helpful and all the food was delicious. Both the filet mignon and burger were fantastic and the mashed potatoes were especially yummy. The Some More dessert was decadent and perfect. They put a lot of special touches in their service and it makes the whole experience so nice. 10/10 would definitely recommend!!

Was here for a business dinner, great food and great service. The house made pasta with bolognese sauce was fantastic, came with a mountain of cheese. The house nori bread was sweet and salty, and the calamari was perfectly cooked.

My wife and I stumbled on this restaurant in 2022 during a terrible storm where we just wanted to get inside quick and eat. It was one of the best finds we've had. I still remember how delicious every bite was, with a fun tradition at the end of the meal. An experience well worth the price.

Tempest is a fantastic restaurant overall with a great atmosphere. We were seated out on the front porch as you walk in which I very much liked, but was also to my surprise. Wehen making reservations you might want to specify as the weather might not be as optimal as our experience. The server was excellently trained and was always on task. The manager made at least two passes during our meal and this was duly noted. My wife got the 3 course meal and I opted for an appetizer and a main. All three parts to her meal was superb as we shared. She got the grouper as her main and a brown butter bread and ice cream with peaches. Five star on all accounts. The bread to start with is unique as it has the flavors of the ocean and it with the home made cream butter is extra special. I got the swordfish and it was excellently prepared, grilled to perfection. The grilled cabbage was simply put fantastic. Spot on so far. The mushrooms however were overly flavored and were entirely too strong for this exceptional plate. Eaten separately they were tolerable. All in all we will definitely return and I would strongly recommend this restaurant. A solid A-.

I did the $55 a person menu which came with a small plate, entree and dessert. everything was delicious the desserts were very original and i liked them a lot, they could have been bigger though. the fish was great but could have used a little more flavor. all around yummy spot that isn’t too loud and super calm ambiance. the stained glass ceiling was one of my favorite parts. i would recommend but only if you have $$$. it was $200 for two people…

My dining experience was one of the most enjoyable years. From our cocktails to the Bulls Bay Clams. The Grouper and Flounder Entree was declcious and cooked perfectly. Then we finished our meal off the desert. I would highly recommend that if you're in town looking for a delicious, relaxing dining experience, give The Tempest a try. Btw- My wife thanks the staff for her flower..

Honestly one of the best meals we had in Charleston. My wife and I each selected a different three course menu and both selections were fantastic. Each course came out perfectly prepared and had the both of us competing for who had the better menu. At the end of the evening the came out with a complimentary whisky which was a nice touch and the perfect nightcap to end the evening. I would highly recommend a visit to Tempest and we look forward to our next visit when in town.

Honestly one of the tastiest, most refreshing culinary experiences I’ve had in a long time. We did the gastronomy experience, and it was beyond delicious. Each course came out and was plated beautifully, but had time and space between the next course so you didn’t feel like you were rushed. Our server Reagan was so kind and friendly. Definitely made us feel right at home. Our favorite part was the rose for each female guest, cognac tasting, and the check in the book that doubled as a visitors log! So unique and so special. We celebrated our 4th anniversary here and I’m sure we’ll be talking about this for many years to come!!

Absolutely loved this place! We did the Chef’s menu for $55 and it’s worth every penny. You get quite a lot of food for it. The interior is well decorated and the bathrooms are clean. It’s not too noisy. I can’t see myself taking my kids here at night time but I went with a girlfriend (kid free!) and we loved it. 10/10 we’ll be back when we vacation to Charleston.

Thanksgiving 2022 will go down in the books as DELICIOUS! We spent our Thanksgiving in Charleston and planned to eat out. After a google search of available places open for Thanksgiving Tempest popped up so I quickly made the reservation. We arrived right on time for our reservation but they were a little behind with our table so we waited at the bar. I loved that they communicated with us on the status of the table AND they even provided us with a complimentary glass of champagne while we waited! Dinner was a three course meal that was absolutely amazing! The sweet potato bisque soup, steak and desert were memorable to say the least. I didn’t even get a photo of the steak cause it was so good! They really made our Thanksgiving great! Next time we are in Charleston we plan to stop in and you should too!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at The Tempest Restaurant, and I must say, it was an extraordinary culinary experience that left me in awe. From the impeccable service provided by our waitress, Lauren, to the exquisite caviar appetizer and delectable desserts, every aspect of the meal was a testament to the restaurant's commitment to excellence. Lauren, our waitress, was an absolute gem. Her warm and attentive demeanor made us feel welcome from the moment we stepped foot into the restaurant. She guided us through the menu with expertise, offering insightful recommendations. In fact, she even went above and beyond by suggesting Ruby's for me to have my nails done, which turned out to be a fantastic recommendation. It was a delightful surprise to discover that we were both born and raised in Sumter, SC, the center of the university. This connection added a personal touch to our dining experience, making it even more memorable. Now, let's talk about the caviar appetizer. The Tempest Restaurant truly knows how to showcase this delicacy. The caviar was served with precision and care, and the flavors were exquisite. The rich and buttery notes of the caviar tantalized our taste buds, and the presentation was equally impressive. The dish was beautifully arranged, enhancing the overall dining experience. And then came the desserts. The Tempest Restaurant's commitment to culinary artistry was evident in every sweet creation that graced our table. From the decadent chocolate mousse to the delicate fruit tart, each dessert was a masterpiece in its own right. The flavors were perfectly balanced, and the textures were a delight to savor. It was evident that the pastry chefs poured their heart and soul into creating these delectable treats. The attention to detail and the dedication to culinary excellence at The Tempest Restaurant are truly commendable. The combination of exceptional service, led by the remarkable waitress Lauren, the exquisite caviar appetizer, and the outstanding desserts make this dining experience one to remember. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply looking for an unforgettable culinary adventure, The Tempest Restaurant is a must-visit destination. Prepare to be captivated by the flavors, the ambiance, and the impeccable service that will leave you craving for more.

Absolutely beautiful restaurant! One of the best culinary experiences I’ve had in a long time. The yellow fin crudo and the ceviche were amazing! And the service, kudos to Joe (bartender) he was warm, and friendly. Loved that he explained the history of the restaurant and surrounding area. This was my first time in Charleston and Joe made it an awesome experience. The restaurant is beautiful, the ceiling 😍.. all I can say is you MUST go and see for yourself!

One of the best dining experiences we have ever had amongst thousands of restaurants world-wide. Our server was extraordinary, presentation outstanding, and flavors abundant. We are ready to come back. They will certainly earn their michelin star in the next 2-3 years.

Consistently recommend as a top seafood place in town. Been twice for dinner and brunch - both meals fantastic. Best shrimp and grits ive ever had, probably the best in Charleston (which is quite a claim!). Highly recommend a whole roast fish which they generally have on the menu. Beautiful decor- stain glass roof adds a uniqueness you don’t come across often.

Robyn Schnessel

Fantastic experience! Everything from the cocktails to the food the service and the atmosphere were outstanding. We had 2 signature cocktails, charred Spanish octopus, whole fish which was snapper, grouper and the Some More dessert and loved every bite! This was a date night for us and we would definitely return. They even brought a complimentary cigar, rose and sip of cognac to end the evening.

S
Sarah Bullins

This restaurant deserves all the praise! As a Shakespeare lover I may be biased, but the Tempest has superb food, hospitality, and atmosphere. The tilefish, swordfish, tuna tartare, rolls, and smores dessert were all delicious! The wait staff were very attentive and the complimentary cognac adds the perfect historic touch!

K
Kaitlyn Simonson

If you're looking for a nice date night or just wanting to treat yourself, this is the place to go! From the time you walk in, the staff is incredible and makes you feel special. We were there for our anniversary and they made us feel celebrated. The food is AMAZING. We did the 3 course for $55 a person...and it is SO WORTH IT. This is the best meal we've had in Charleston. Recommend the sweet potato and also the whole fish.

Since my wife and I moved to Charleston in February, we have made it a mission to try a new restaurant every weekend. Tempest is now at the top of my list! We both had the three course meal (great deal) and everything that was served to us was perfect from the bread until dessert. I had the Spanish octopus, the swordfish, and the “say more” or s’mores dessert. Fantastic dinner! We will be back!

R
Robert Edelstein

Excellent service (especially from the manager and our waitress Marty), the restaurant has a real nice patio out front where we sat but the inside is very cool too with an awesome sea mosaic on the ceiling. Their nori infused bread was ridiculously good, the sweet potato side was insane with it’s crust, the “premium” oysters left A LOT to be desired, the salad we ordered was delicious, we got 1 pound of shrimp roasted in their special oven and it was excellent, and their sides were good as well. Desert was so so but I think we just ordered wrong. They brought out complimentary cognac and a cigar for me, and a rose for my wife. Overall, it was a really good meal and a great vibe/atmosphere. Would return and highly recommended.

Tempest is an awesome place. The down stairs aesthetic is awesome. The glass mural is just an outstanding price of art work. The staff is great. Jamie can really put a menu together. Recently had the absolute pleasure of dining at their 1st anniversary! It was a 7 course meal, with wine pairings, and it was just phenomenal! The Opah (fish sic?) Was the star of the courses that included lobster and an absolutely delicious heart of rib eye. It was just an amazing dish. Anyway. Go here.

The thing about Tempest is that I keep coming back for more. I have been to this restaurant at least five times, if not more, since they opened. There are a lot of really good restaurants to choose from in Charleston so that says a lot. The food is always delicious and the ingredients are very well thought out. The desserts are also incredible, especially the s’mores dessert currently on the menu. I cannot recommend this gem enough.

C
Christopher Moss

Tempest is all about the freshest fish prepared to perfection with awesome service and romantic ambiance. We arrived at 545 and by the time we left at 8pm the place was packed. We started with the tuna bomb followed by ceviche. For third course we had the crudo and finished with a dozen oysters. Throughout the meal I had 3 martinis and Kimberly had 3 French 75s mixed and shaken to perfection by the very talented mixologists. Tempest has by far raised the bar in the ever evolving Charleston seafood competition. I highly recommend Tempest for the best seafood cocktails and service in town.

One of the best dining experiences (food, wine & service) that I’ve ever been lucky enough to have. I wish I could give them 10 stars! Thank you Tempest, what an amazing experience!

If you’re reading reviews in order to decide if you should book, stop now and book those reservations! Here we go - we were greeted with champagne as we were celebrating a big anniversary (I’ll keep that number quiet!). Our server was immediately welcoming, warm, intentional and focused on my husband and I having a lovely meal AND experience. For an appetizer, we had the ravioli but the bread, stop it, it was award winning goodness, don’t skip those carbs! We ordered the trio seafood tower and everything was perfect. We ended with the “some more” dessert, I’ve forgotten the name but it’s a play on s’mores. However, don’t be fooled, this isn’t a simple dessert. It is now in my top 3 desserts of a lifetime. The cognac, cigar, rose… it’s all on brand and a fun ending. I’ve had dinner at their sister restaurant, Church and Union, how fun to have two places with such a different yet fabulous vibe. You can’t go wrong here.

The service was exceptional, and the food was superb. Every aspect of their dishes are designed with incredibly fresh and tasty ingredients, even within their cocktail menu. Easily one of the best meals I've ever consumed! I loved the atmosphere, especially with the lovely mosaic inside the main dining area. Their tradition of signing your name into a copy of The Tempest (by Shakespeare) which the restaurant is named after is quite unique and memorable. You would be crazy to not eat here at least once.

S
Susan Breault

Wow! What an experience. First, Anthony our server was excellent and his recommendations were spot on. Small plates were the way to go. The agnolotti was the unexpected hit. Loved the clam risotto and octopus too. One of the best meals I have had in Charleston or anywhere else..we did share the confit swordfish which melted in your mouth. Book a reservation.

We had a lovely time at Tempest. We sat on the front porch which was fun to people watch from. I was stoked to see they had a couple of N/A beverage options on their menu (drop the beat was great! They also had a N/A beer). We started with the Risotto, Crudo, and Steak Tartare. All were delicious but the crudo was definitely the best bite that first round. They serve a complimentary house bread with nori that was super tasty as well. Next course we had the shrimp prepared both ways. Chilled with old bay and cocktail sauce. Roasted served with a scampi sauce and chive butter - holy sh*t that chive butter 🥰🥰🥰. Love coming to the coast for fresh Shrimp. For our last course we shared the special Escolar that was prepared beautifully and accompanied by spring peas, radishes, apples and a tasty sauce. We chose the Bok Choy as a side and OMG it was sooo tasty!! Double bonus points for splitting our entree for us! Seriously the staff was great. Everyone who came to our table was kind and treated us like real humans! My only complaint would be that the patio chairs weren’t that comfy for a large body. They didn’t have arms(thank god) but they were a bit tight for me. 10/10 would recommend. Thanks to Alexis and the whole team!!

S

Needless to say, unforgettable experience. The staff went above and beyond for us and made our experience truly something special. Have to shout out the GM and Server who attended to us (I cant remember the names but yall made us hot chocolate to accommodate for something else that was no ones fault at all) yall were awesome, and im incredibly happy that we chose Tempest as our dinner spot for the evening. Will be dining here again on the next visit !

Wow. Came here for dinner and I think we got lucky having Ella as our server. She was so attentive and took amazing care of us. The food, more specifically the short rib is by far the best. I get it everytime lol. However dearest Ella made the experience. She had all the recommendations and she hit the mark everytime. I hope we get paired up with her as our server not just next time but everytime we come to eat. 5 stars for tempest but 500 stars for Ella

We made reservations to eat outside. The temperature was perfect. The food was excellent with service to match. Our sever Grace was very knowledgeable, kind and engaging. They are on my list of favorites in Charleston.

Wife and I had a wonderful meal tonight at Tempest. Red Snapper and Pasta were both delicious. Shrimp was the best I've ever had. Cocktails, salad, bread, desert..all delicious. Our server (Grace) was great walking us through the menu. We'll be back whenever we're in town!

My husband and I recently moved to the area and decided we would try Tempest as our first date night, because we love seafood. We went for the NYE special dinner, and it was spectacular. We arrived at 5:31pm thinking our reservation was at 5:30. Turns out it was for 5:15 (100 percent our mistake, we should have double checked). They were very gracious and made room for us, despite our mistake. Our waitress, Grace Winter, was AMAZING! She was so fun and knowledgeable. My husband and I love to treat ourselves to fine dining experiences, and this one was one of the best, and I’m convinced it’s mostly because of her. Her recommendations were spot on. I can’t wait to come back and try the regular menu, and hopefully we get Ms. Winter again.

Haven't even made it home yet, but I can't stop singing praises of this place. Our server, Ella, and the host (I'm so sorry, I don't remember his name- Nick, or Zach, I think?) were wonderful, took such good care of us. Loved the cocktails, I had the weekly special- the Lowcountry Horchata, I think it was called- absolutely delicious. The Adeline was really popular at our table, as well. The nori rolls and calamari were delicious, but I have to say, I think the chilled oysters and the cacio e pepe were the best things to hit the table tonight. That honey pot de crème to finish everything off- whoo. We're coming back, for sure.

J
Josie Slater

The Squash & Arugula salad was delicious! I enjoyed every bite, and I got to feel like I was also eating something good for me! I also had the Roasted Shrimp. As a person that grew up eating fresh gulf shrimp, I have a high bar. As a person that has lived in the Midwest, far removed from fresh shrimp, these delicious roasted Shrimp were a great joy. I had forgotten how luxurious shrimp are. The seasoning on the shrimp was satisfying and fullbodied. They were finger lickin good to steal words from the Colonel. I would recommend ordering a pound, and eating them as your entree! The owner was ever present, checking on the tables to make sure all was well. The staff was friendly and quick to handle questions or requests.

S

Everything was a 10/10. Declyn gave us great recommendations and we took everyone. She did not steer us wrong and our service with her was top notch. She knew the menu backwards and forwards. We will be back!

Oh we adored this restaurant. The ocean rolls were fantastic to start with, I will dream of them. My husband got the braised short rib and I got the steak frite, both were phenomenal and perfect portions for an exquisite dessert. The tradition at the end was sweet little touch. Whether you are a local (as we are) or visiting, we highly suggest giving it a go.

We decided to try out Tempest, a spot that has been on our list for awhile now, and it did not disappoint! Here’s the line up: We started with the mahi crudo & butternut squash, had the monkfish curry & swordfish for our entrees and finished with the hazelnut praline tart & hummingbird cake for dessert! Ambiance: 8/10 We loved the romantic, coastal design of the restaurant! We really enjoyed their taste in music, which is very important to us! The atmosphere was lively & inviting! Food: 8/10 We were especially impressed with the crudo, butternut squash, & hummingbird cake! But we were very happy with everything that we ordered, & would love to explore the menu more! Service: 9/10 Our server was very attentive and checked on us frequently! Our wine glasses were never left empty :) Our server was also assisted by other members of the restaurants team which made transitions through the courses seamless! We were treated to a rose, cigar, and cognac tasting at the end of our evening making for a perfect night cap!

I will start by saying we went during restaurant week (so already busy) but despite that we had a lovely time. Granted there were some hiccups with service and our orders but Adam promptly and professionally handled the mishaps. We greatly enjoyed our time and celebrating our anniversary despite everything. We will gladly return and the deserts are still living rent free in my head.

K
Katie Noyb

The duck was amazing. Might I recommend offering a different side option other than the lentils? The bummer for me was the order of oysters which are tiny. The service was fabulous as well as the taste of the food.

My Husband and I spent Thanksgiving with Tempest and it was a great experience. We came with our baby and they were very friendly and helpful. The shrimp appetizer was the probably best we have ever had! The entree was just ok. Australian Wagyu was cooked well (that cut just isn’t stellar). Sides were meh, not bad but not exciting. The dessert was a standout. I had the Smores dessert and it was amazing. Perfect balance of sweetness, bitterness and a perfect texture. My Husband had a pumpkin mouse situation that was also very good. Overall I was very impressed with this place, it was not over-hyped influence crap, they actually make good food. My only gripe is that there are no changing tables in the bathrooms, which in my opinion is kind of unacceptable. I would still go again though because I really loved the food.

Tried Church and Union in September. Came back to try Tempest. Like C & U, the atmosphere at Tempest was fantastic. The stained glass ceiling was beautiful. Intricate work with masterful colors. Tempest is the sister restaurant of C & U. The food was ok. I had the special of the night halibut and charcoal roasted root vegetables. The vegetables were very flavorful in the sauce. The halibut was not as flavorful with the light crust. Others had the roasted shrimp and the ocean rolls as their meal. The ocean rolls were probably second best only to the stained glass. The up kept tradition was a nice touch. A complimentary rose for the ladies and special bourbon shot for all. Check them out and decide for yourself.

Although I have friends who had eaten at Tempest, this was my first visit. It's a beautiful building and we were upstairs in a bright welcoming room. There were 14 of us at 2 tables and I know that can be hard to manage. Unfortunately, our table had a long wait for our food. I ordered the Tempest omelet - crab borgatta, hollandaise and country ham. It was very salty. I ate it by using the toast points to cut some of the salt. After speaking with my table, I think it's split 50/50 on whether we will be back. I would like to try a different meal/menu - I don't have any desire to do brunch there again.

S
Summa Simmons

Price fixe thanksgiving dinner. Servjce and ambiance were well appointed. Dinner unfortunately was a miss. The innards of the fried stuffing was probably my favorite part if the meal. The NY strip was the perfect size but lacked in flavor the glazed carrots & savory granola were meh at best. The pomme puree was runny and the dessert. The caramel apple cake definitely tasted mass produced and had some ingredient that grossly overshadowed what would otherwise have been a sweet ending. My partner had the sea bass, which was begging for au jus. The lentils (pea cassoulet) were al dente and the schmear of acorn squash probably was the best part of the dish. As we dined we looked at other diners reaction to dessert.. specifically the caramel apple cake and it was essentially the same look of curiosity v Borderline disappointment. Sadly it was our last meal of vacation and our first time dining out on holiday .. not sure I’d trust Tempest with an important meal again.

By far worst experience I’ve had at a restaurant here in Charleston. Steak was extremely overcooked, sides lacked any flavor, and service was subpar. One waitress knocked over water onto the table and took 10 minutes to get towels. She then just tossed them to us to clean up ourselves. Another waitress was extremely rude to another in our party. I would not recommend this place.
