On Saturday we hosted an 18th birthday party. The food was amazing, the only side note I would add is using a different holder for the gravy as it was slightly difficult to pour gravy over the plates. The atmosphere and staff were great providing a great experience to all of our guests.
I rarely do reviews but after such a lovely meal, and at such a very reasonable price. I felt it only fare to provide a review. As a local resident I’ve seen what once was a thriving pub decades ago, go through lots of new ownership. The latest owners have got it right finally. Nice decor, nice patio area, good service, reasonable prices and great food. We will be making it a weekly visit.
Excellent service from the 2 ladies on the bar. Food was very good and reasonably priced. Easily the best pie this year. Well kept and properly served cask ales. First visit but definitely not my last.
Excellent food with equally excellent friendly service. We had a complicated order with lots of changes which was dealt with ease. Fully recommend ( pie menu is especially fantastic)
Nice pub. Visited for the first time today, would highly recommend ☺️
sunday lunch from today :) friendly service, food is so fresh and delicious. we have been served by Harley a couple of times, he gives great service.
Such a great find! A group of 6 hungry post-walk vegan/vegetarians and 2 dogs had a huge choice of delicious pies with fresh roasty veg. GF and other V/VG options too and well-kept local ales. Friendly service and absolutely incredible value too. Definitely would come back 😎 might even make the trip from Brighton just for lunch 😆
Pub under new management. Great atmosphere, very welcoming. Great food, Sunday roast menu should meet everyones expectations. Highly recommended.
First time and it was nice and welcome here, the food was amazing
Lovely pub, yummy food and the staff are all very pleasant and friendly.
The most amazing place I have been to in Chesterfield for a very long time. It has become so hard to find a place that does good fresh food, this place is amazing. The staff are warm and welcoming. oh my, the food, just that experience is enough for me to go every day. I heard this place had changed when I heard the landlord on Spire Radio. We came back in on Fathers day. We had the most amazing meal, now my family want to come all the time.
Under new ownership but the food is much better than the previous chain owners. Great selection of pies, chippy style chips and a good selection of beers. Dog friendly.
Popped in on Sunday as the wife wanted a roast dinner. She thoroughly enjoyed her pork dinner and I had the bacon n cheese burger which was excellent A great choice of beers and spirits and nicely decorated throughout. I would highly recommend.
I came to work from this pub last week and the service was exceptional, all the staff were super friendly and attentive. I was ther eworking from a laptop for quite a while and didn't feel rushed at all. I stayed for a couple of coffees and some lunch and it was perfect. would recommend!
Just returned from late lunch. Fish delicious, chips back to the original - chunky and fluffy (thank you Amy). sevice first class
Fantastic Sunday lunch would highly recommend, great food and service.
Great place Fantastic service lovely food Thank you to owner Amy and Cameron/Andy for being very accommodating with our dietary requirements. We will return
First time here following recommendation from my sons friend. Nice place, friendly staff, food was great. Went for the pie, amazing, seasonal veg and chips , fab, tasty. Will definitely be back. No delays with the food.
Really good folk running the place and a really good local pub with a great selection of beers and wines
Had the best Sunday dinner I've had in a long time. Harley and Jack couldn't have been more helpful & the food was all fresh and a generous portion. Will definitely be back now it's been taken over by new people.
Popped in today after a steady walk with our dog. Decided to have lunch. So glad we did as the thick triple cooked chips were to die for and a good generous portion too. Wife had a cheese jacket potato with a really lovely side salad. The pub is run independently now with a really good chef. Well done to all. Harley, Lewis, Amy, Richard and their team.
Been back after a very long break- new ownership and much improved. The best chips we’ve had for ages! So friendly and food delicious- def be returning soon!
Nice little pub, recently under new management. Welcoming atmosphere, and staff are very friendly. The standard had been falling over the last few years so the new owners are trying to shake off the negative image and have done a smashing job. Meals are tasty and portion sizes are generous. Certainly on its way up, so go now before it gets too busy. Also, the fries are absolutely exquisite, highly recommend
What a wonderful place for a Sunday lunch! 5 of us joined you today. The staff are very polite and welcoming, the chefs have done an amazing job. Our meals were out in 15 minutes, warm plate, the veg was fresh, cooked to perfection, the beef was tender and perfectly cook and the mash was MASH! Dog friendly, clean and a warning atmosphere. And the toilets are clean! Keep up the good work, we'll definitely be returning!
We have enjoyed a lovely 3 course meal here today, catching up with friends we were happy to take our time and enjoy our experience. Amy has looked after us from the moment we came in, the log fire was kept stocked up and a very cold wet day, just what you want. Food was excellent as always beautifully presented and cooked, highly recommend The Woodside we have never had a bad meal here. Well done Guys x
Dropped in here with friends camping nearby, just on the off chance of getting lunch, and we were so glad that we did! Staff and owner very friendly and helpful, food delicious and VERY generous portions, and very reasonably priced. We will definitely be going back next time we are in the area. (Just to note, this place is very good for gluten-free or coeliac requirements)
We had my father in law's wake at the Woodside and I cannot praise them highly enough. The food was superb and very reasonably priced, the staff genuine and lovely and the venue was very warm and welcoming on a child and show covered day. A lovely experience at a difficult time for us. Thank you so much for everything.
Fabulous Sunday lunch yesterday. Food was delicious a proper hearty, home cooked Sunday dinner. Great atmosphere especially the open fire and the friendly staff. Will definitely be returning.
Firstly I would say ignore the post from Johanna W, this vile group had no regard for others including my family that had an amazing night in this venue. The food wait times can be long but the food is all made on site and is worth the wait for REAL food. The staff handled this group very well (all seemed okay apart from one gobby woman who was shouting and being abusive to staff, clearly drunk or just a scumbag) The food was good, we had been informed that they had a staff member down in the kitchen and that a junior cook had stepped up to the plate (pun intended) the options that they had, still plentiful and tasted very nice. Christmas music playing, not too loud but still classy. the fire was warm and welcoming. The owners came and spoke with us a few times to make sure we had all that we needed. We have been coming to this venue for a long time and it has never been this good. We love all the staff here now. We love the food. We have never been let down since the new owners started last year. Ignore the haters, you guys are smashing it.
We booked a table for 5 and the service was exceptional. The staff couldnt have been more helpful as one of our party was wheelchair bound, but nothing was too much trouble. I would like to praise the staff , we will certainly visit again. Lovely food too.
Lovely and welcoming front of house staff. Nice selection of drinks. Food was tasty and plenty of. They noticed my was cold and lit the open fire after talking to us.
Very friendly (and dog friendly), helpful staff. Huge menu, catering for all dietary requirements and all at a very reasonable price for excellent food and more than adequate portions! We very much appreciated that the menu is not confined to the usual pub food to be found in chain pubs. We were visiting the area and met friends there on two occasions for lunch. We'll definitely visit again next time we are nearby. Thank you to Richard and all the staff. Stella, Pete and Elsa the collie.
Decent plate in a nice environment. This is a clean, well appointed pub with a good menu and early week offers (Mon and Tues). I had a mixed grill with a decent sized rump steak, gammon, sausages and egg. Chunky chips were crisp and tasty too...only grumble was the chicken which was a little bland although well cooked.
Had a lovely meal only let down I asked for my husband's meat to be well done and it was still very pink with blood but other than that lovely nice sausages
Food on the whole was ok but £25 for filled lobster/crab pasta and to receive 6 parcels of pasta is a joke, there is a starter version for £13 so probably you get 3 or 2 parcels? Decided to go home and have some tea. My wife and daughter had a steak and stilton pie and halloumi Berger that were good with home made chips.
19/10/25 The Woodside was becoming a little favorite place of ours, the people who use this pub are very friendly . We had Sunday lunch few weeks ago . And we like to get drinks play few games of pool. Last 3 times unfortunately it’s been hard to get change for the table . And we are told they can’t give us any ok , But today took the biscuit I had change 4 20p and 2 10p I asked the barman johno for £1 coin . To be told it’s not company policy to give £1 coin for change ? against the rules. I have never herd something so stupid . He was quite stern. He’s obviously having a bad day. As he could not force a smile or an once of understanding. The other staff member wanted to help but was told NO he can’t do it Other customer's told me they get change ? Not sure why a public house would not want or try to help its customers . We managed to get change from a customer, and buying drinks to get more change . We played few games then left the empty pub .
Nice layout and good selection of food on the menu. Ordered 2 mixed grills, when the food was brought out to us we had to ask for steak knives. Looked forward to the meal but it was mediocre at best. The horse shoe gammon was half a horse shoe gammon 4mm ish thick and over cooked, my friends were burnt at one end but hidden under other stuff. The sausage had been deep fried along with the chicken wings that were tasteless, the chicken was rubbery and watery ( the dog enjoyed it), lots of fresh peas and button mushrooms, the black pudding was burnt to a crisp and we did tell the guy that served us but he didn't bother to get back to us . Ultimate chunky chips were just frozen chips and nothing special. The egg on the gammon was old , it was flat and tasteless, onion rings were also part of the meal but none arrived with the meal, and no explanation as to why not. After telling the guy the food was burnt I expected some feedback, but he came up short on his customer service. This pub served great food a few years ago, but definitely has gone down hill , nearly £3.00 for half a diet coke is shocking. The dog had a good feed when we got home . Really disappointed, after the presentation was really good . Food not of a high standard at all , customer service less so .
£29 for the mixed grill. No better quality than you get from a typical chain restaurant. Least you expect for £29 is a proper sausage not Generic one thats served at the cheapest places. Taste dirty charcoal flavour on the steak. Partner has a creamy mushroom pasta thing. No real flavour and pasta overcooked. Wouldn't mind but at their prices you expect the quality to be there
Most disappointing. Staff polite but food awful!!! Pie mediocre. The pastry was like trying to cut plastic, rock hard. The peas had been microwaved within a mm of their life and the fries were inciped! The gravy well????? No care or attention to detail anywhere!! Yet again no leadership or ownership to be seen. Must be sole destroying for the bar staff. Never again.
We have previously enjoyed good meals here, but yesterday the food wasn't brilliant and the service was terrible. We had booked, but there were only about 4 others in when we arrived, so not busy. It took over 1 hour, after ordering, for the food to be served. The mashed potatoes were lumpy, the cabbage was leathery, only 1 slice of carrot and one slice of parsnip, the Yorkshire puddings were burnt and the Gammon was overcooked and dry. When eventually the table was cleared, we waited ages for the dessert menu, then waited ages again for the dessert to be served. It took 3 hours in all for a 2 course meal. Very disappointed.
Ordered the Ultimate Sunday Roast. What poor value it was and a complete waste of money. A small slither of each meat, rubbery roast potatoes, minimal veg and the mash certainly wasn't fresh. It was poor quality, miniscule portions and certainly wasn't worth nearly 25 pound. On the plus side the staff were pleasant as is the pub itself. The food is a HUGE let down
Astronomical prices. Almost £15 for a dirty burger on it's own, no extras. Could have eaten it in 2 bites. £4 extra for some freezer chips. £6.65 for a pint. Just unbelievable. Won't be going again.
Arrived today at 12.30 to be told they were very busy an an hour wait on food. THERE WAS ONE TABLE IN!!! Lots of tables without reserved signs, got home and looked at booking online and gave me a choice of tables at 1, 1.15, 1.30 etc. Shocking service!
Avoid this place I did a full 11hr shift in the kitchen and was given no break. I never got paid for the trial shift that i did which was on a bank holiday and the other 4hrs shift i did. I used to like coming in here which is why i applied for a kitchen position however id never go there again
Absolute sham. This was booked a week before. 10 of us Been to celebrate my daughters graduation, 4:40 we arrived to hav the to request a menu at 5:15 to be told they had no chefs as they were off ill. So half the menu was not available. Another 30-40min before anyone came to take the order (the pub had probably half a dozen people in and not many eating) we also had 2 children with us. At about 6:15 they bought one child’s meal out … at about 6:30 the rest came out apart from one which came about 6:45…we then Went to pay the bill and told them of our disappointment and ask to at least a little discount for the bar man to tell us well you have eaten all the food why should we give a discount!! Tbf there wasn’t one empty plate !!! . Not much off a £200 food bill when we had probably spent the same on wine etc waiting for the food. Whilst discussing this the manager came out and advised all their food was fresh ! Fine (although their mash is definitely NOT fresh) he also advised if I required microwave food to go to the olde house !! Definitely disgusting dissing their nearest food place. This is a pub I have always liked. First time I have been for a meal in a while and I definitely will not be returning. Plus the manager asked me to leave as other customers could hear my complaints!!! GOOD
Although we booked in advance, we were never informed that the menu would be drastically reduced. When we arrived at 5pm, the restaurant was quiet with only two other tables occupied. Despite this, we waited 45 minutes before anyone came to our table, and only after requesting menus ourselves were we told that both chefs were unwell and that only a junior chef was available meaning no starters and a very restricted menu (pizza, pub classics, and gammon only). We ordered what we could as some of our group had travelled by taxi and had little choice but to stay. We even bought snacks from the bar to tide us over while waiting with children in the group. Olives were initially unavailable, then later confirmed available, finally arriving with bread around 6pm. Main meals followed intermittently between 6:30pm and 7pm. The person who received their food first had finished by the time the last dish arrived. Unfortunately, the food itself was unacceptable: chips were overcooked and cold, burgers were burnt to the point of being inedible, mashed potato was solid, scampi was fried to the texture of sawdust, and the “braised lamb lasagne” was simply sliced lamb layered into a dish. When a member of our party complained, they were told to leave for “disrupting other customers” despite the venue being almost empty. To wait over three hours in such a quiet pub for poor-quality food, unprofessional customer service, and no prior warning about the limited menu was hugely disappointing for the entire group. Based on this experience, we will not be returning and would strongly advise others to avoid
Seen as you have decided to delete your reviews section on Facebook as of yesterday (27/10/25) I will write my review here, too. Sunday, the 26th Oct, my partner, his 7-year-old daughter, my friend, her partner, and their 1-year-old son visited the Woodside pub for dinner. We called ahead to confirm there was a table for us six and were assured that there was. Upon arrival, we found a table and went to get our own menus. After deciding what we wanted to order, we approached the bar, only to be informed that it was table service for both food and drinks. That was fine, so we sat back down. We then waited another 30 minutes before anyone came over to take our order. After that, we waited an additional 30 to 45 minutes (approx) for our drinks, which included three Pepsis and a beer. We ended up waiting over an hour for our food before deciding to pay for our drinks and leave, (may I add—This is the first time we have ever left somewhere early), as the kids were getting restless and hungry (understandably!). When we approached the bar to ask for a further update on our food order and pay for our drinks—a further 15 minutes (approx) after we initially inquired—we provided our table number, only to find out that they couldn’t locate our order! As a group, we have never had any issues with this pub and have always enjoyed lovely meals there. This experience left us feeling frustrated. We understand that Sundays can be busy, but it seemed the table across from us was in the same predicament—they arrived about 10-15 minutes after us, ordered their drinks and food, and when we left an hour or more later, they still hadn’t received their drinks! It might be helpful, Woodside, in the future, if you inform customers when you are already over booked/overwhelmed, instead of agreeing to take further bookings. It’s such a shame because we were really looking forward to trying their roast dinners, which we've heard great things about! I don’t usually complain, as I do understand these things happen, we're only human, but this was meant to be a lovely treat for all of us, as we don’t get to meet up often. We envisioned a nice afternoon in a lovely pub with a tasty Sunday lunch (as the image of the Woodside is portrayed on social media), but instead, we faced a lot of stress and disappointment.
Went with family of 6 for tea tonight, pub was not busy at all. When went to order advised No fries, steak, gammon or specials poor barman explained the chef was not in. Absolutely fine, we ordered food- prawn cocktail with salmon (came without salmon) no apologies or acknowledgement until we flagged it. Halloumi burger came without coleslaw again was not flagged in advance. 2 x mince pies cold and salty. Chicken burger Absolutely disgusting, chips cold same with beefburger. We spent over £100 on food and drink and the food was absolutely awful. Did not complain to the poor guy behind the bar as everything was completely out of his control, I hate to complain, in fact I never complain but I feel so strongly about the state and the price of the food. Safe to say we will not ever be back for food. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
6 of us waited over 1and 1/2 hours for our food to be served cold and with small portions. When the barman asked if everything was ok we explained our issues but didn’t even get an apology.
This place was awesome 10 years ago, not so much nowadays… walked in and got a table, was quite busy. Stood in a large line for the bar to be told it was table service which we wasn’t instructed on at arrival, waited a further 20 minutes for a waiter to come to our table and take our order , drinks arrived a further 20 mins later, we was left waiting an hour and a half for food until we asked the waiter staff and they couldnt even find our order their system… our 1 year old son was left hungry and unsettled, we paid full price for our drinks with no discount offered for lack of service, its a shame this place is how it is currently, it used to be amazing under previous ownerships … i’d give 0 stars if possible, unacceptable service, first time ive had to walk out a restaurant without eating due to lack of service, even if they offered to bring my baby sons meal out just to feed him i would have been happy with that , other people on the table next to us was also annoyed at the waiting time and service received
