My first time eating Ethiopian food and it was delicious! The vegetarian sampler was great with the tea and the sambusas were lovely. I will definitely come back!
Amazing vegetarian platter that even my omnivore friends will devour. Service is pretty nice too. The food is amazingly seasoned as well, so tasty and such a good value for your money.
Went for lunch with coworkers, we ordered our food to go, but it smelled so good we just had to try a bite before leaving—and ended up eating it all right there! I ordered the veggie sampler, every dish was incredibly flavorful and fresh, with perfectly soft, tangy injera and a delicious mix of lentils, greens, and stews. The staff were so kind and welcoming, and the food was absolutely irresistible.
The food is absolutely delicious! I ordered the veggie sampler for one and I loved every bite! The atmosphere is relaxing and the service was great. Highly recommend!
Absolutely loved my experience at Ethiopian Diamond! The service was outstanding—super friendly and attentive from start to finish. You can tell it’s family-owned by the warmth and care they put into everything. The food was incredible—rich flavors, generous portions, and beautifully presented. A must-visit if you’re in Chicago and want authentic Ethiopian cuisine. Highly recommend!
I am back from traveling and Chicago is home. What is my first craving? The vegetarian sampler at Etiopian Diamond! I have been coming here for at least 5 years. The lentils are so delicious. The cabbage is my favorite. I always leave completely satisfied and joyfully full!
WOW!!!! Truly a breathtaking awe-inspiring and magical experience. I have never been so content. My heart, soul and mind are finally aligned and at peace. The voices in my head have quietened. Let us start with the food. Absolutely delectable. Finger-licking good. Literally. Service? Better than your own grandmother’s home. Could not have had better servers. Atmosphere? Awesome! It was filled with joyous laughter! Love going to a crowded place to have a hearty dinner. All in all, I am satiated beyond belief and in a state of pure bliss and ecstasy. Thank you for your food and service Ethiopian Diamond!
I absolutely adore this place! They once had another location on Clark, and both spots have consistently delivered outstanding service, delicious food, and a vibrant atmosphere that is simply enchanting. During my pregnancy, I found immense joy in every meal, especially the Doro Tibs Wat—it's delightfully spicy and bursting with flavor. Each visit felt like a warm embrace, making it a truly memorable dining experience!
This place and the food is absolutely delicious! It is a spot I come to every time I visit Chicago. I recommend coming here with a group and getting the sampler platter! It is a good representation of a little bit of everything! It is super filling and just soo good. They have plenty of vegetarian options as well. I think my favorite is the shiro, which is like a delicous chickpea paste. I love this place!
Thank you again for a lovely lunch for Diversity Matters! Your food is delicious and your service and kindness are much appreciated. That's why we keep coming back!
Wonderful family run place with incredible food, great service & atmosphere!! A neighborhood gem. Ethiopian food is one of my favorite cuisines and I've been coming here for over a decade. The quality is always spot on and it's great for groups. Stop by the indoor flea market next door for an Edgewater experience.
My favorite food is Ethiopian. I live in Atlanta and wanted to try Ethiopian food for the first time in Chicago. Outstanding service, food was amazing and the atmosphere was very pleasant. I will definitely be back when I visit.
I worked in Ethiopia off and on for two years, and in between, I would bring people to Ethiopian Diamond to share the experience with friends in Chicago. The food here is great, the atmosphere is laid back, and the large dining room feels inviting to me. This visit we started off with a small coffee pot, which they served with small cups and some sugar. We ordered some sambusa savory pastries, two filled with meats and one with veggies and one with lentils as an appetizer. Then we had the meat sampler plate, which came with 3 meats and 3 vegetarian offerings in a platter of the injera bread, and a platter of four more rolled injera. There was some salad in the middle of the platter too. Everything tasted great, the service was quiet and prompt, with frequent water fills since we stayed a long time given they weren't busy. Overall, a great choice for Ethiopian dining.
Food is top notch. Love the lentils and split peas and… everything. Divine. The service is top notch too. We went when it wasn’t busy and the manager or owner held my 1-year-old while we ate. Mikey LOVED his new papaw. ♥️
Really enjoy this place, so much so that my family took me there for my birthday. Great flavors and quality, super friendly and attentive service, and a pleasant atmosphere. I look forward to the next time !
Absolutely postitively amazing culinary experience. I had gluten free injera, split peas, collard greens, and cabbage. It was a complete flavor explosion in my mouth. I can't wait to return. The customer service was phenomenal and the beet salad was incredible!!!
Really tasty food! Loved the beet salad especially. The dressing was really nice and it tasted fresh. Tried the national dish of Ethiopia, Doro Wat, and it was the bomb. Absolutely incredible.
First time here and never had Ethiopian food before. Great find and wonderful first experience! Had chicken and lamb dishes. Incredible flavors and big portions! Staff was very welcoming and nice. Good crowd for a Monday night!
Ethiopian Diamond is 🔥. Pulled up with friends and split the meat & veggie combo platter. Flavor bomb. Portions were generous, everything was mad fresh. Spent about $30 with a drink. Vibe was cozy, live music was a nice touch. Perfect spot if you're tryna switch it up from your usual. Definitely hittin' it again soon.
I highly recommend the Ethiopian Diamond Restaurant & Bar to anyone looking for an authentic Ethiopian dining experience. The meat sampler and the Chocolate Diamond Royal dessert were fantastic, and the coffee was excellent. The staff was friendly and attentive, making it a great place to visit with friends or family. Don't miss out on this amazing spot!
I’ve been coming here since 1998. This is my favorite Ethiopian restaurant! Took my friend here for her first time and she became a fan as well. We will be back soon!
Spacious place with nice speedy service. Food is great, served on big plates/trays. Interesting thing...you will be eating with your hands ..not an easy thing but worth trying. Decoration on walls is trying to get you a little feel of Ethiopia.
Wonderful dining experience with the flavors of Ethiopia flowing through the air. Vegetarian options were very tasty, fresh and satisfying to the palate.
Delicious! Everyone is super kind even on a busy Saturday night. Great use of flavor and high quality! Bring your friends!
Ethiopian Diamond is consistent with quality food, service, and a easeful environment to fellowship. The family style and large format eating was perfect for our party of four. I recommend if you’re looking to try a new cuisine or are craving a taste of Ethiopia (like I was).
The best Ethiopian food I’ve ever had. The staff was so nice and friendly.
I ordered delivery, and they hooked me up. So much food. Filled the container to the brim. A vegetarian sampler for 1 is more like a dinner for 2-3. Maybe even enough injera to wear as a blanket. Probably could put it on your face with good results. Someone should market that. I had previously ordered from a different well-known Ethiopian restaurant and it was good, but the portion size was so small, and cost more too. I was pretty pissed. I don't even eat that much, and I was still hungry. So I tried out Ethiopian Diamond this time, and I couldn't be happier. Food for days. Delicious. It's really good cold too, when you have the midnight munchies and you can't get it off your mind. I thought they accidentally gave me meat in the shimbra assa, but turns out it was chickpea dumplings. That's how close the texture was. Couldn't be happier.
Excellent hospitality and food. Very welcoming atmosphere. My first time visit for lunch with a friend who was familiar with this wonderful spot. Authentic. We'll be back 😊
Always a good time with good food. Excellent, friendly service. Always feel like they care about the patrons here and they’re proud of the food they serve. The sampler is huge and easily feeds two. Good portions. One thing that could be improved is the decor. The interior feels quite outdated at this point.
Yes! Yes! Yes! Some of the best Ethiopian food I've had. Chill atmosphere and good people too. I had the vegetarian sample platter (I'm not vegetarian) and I didn't miss the meat! All of it was so flavorful, well seasoned and just enough.
We had the non-veg sampler and the veg-sampler. There were four of us and each dish was for two people. We were famished, and so we could actually finish it all. But on a regular day, the “two people”quantity they serve is enough for a party of three. The chicken was really well made. But the lentils were out of this world - really flavorful and spicy. I highly recommend this place if you are in mood for some really flavorful and filling meal.
This place is actually amazing!! 1.) It’s a fun unique experience! 2.) Food is not overly different where it turned me off. 3.) Food is delicious! 4.) Intimate dining situation: In which had me giggling the whole time (in a good way), I loved getting to use my own hand as utensils in which was uncomfortably fun!XD 5.) the people - waitress, owners, hostess was sweet which i think is important. 6.) the restaurant is casual with a subtle Tiny hint of fancy 7.) Pricing is okay. Could be more affordable, maybe? but it is $20 per person if ordered sampler. In fairness, Sampler came with appetizers as well and you get a lot of food. 8.) That matches are a cute last touch. lol grabbed em as a sort of souvenir .... [conclusion: I would definitely go to again and I’d recommend to people who are open minded and would like to try new things ]
Came here for an early lunch. I was seated right away and the food arrived quickly! Very friendly staff.
The place is cozy and you’re seated quickly. The food comes outs fast and is delicious! The portions are massive! We got the platter for 2 people but couldn’t finish it. This is one of my favourite Ethiopian dinners! I would highly recommend this gem.
Wonderful food and service. We stopped by for lunch a couple weeks ago and it was so delicious. Definitely recommend the lamb and also trying the honey wine if you haven’t before!
Love this place! A berela of the honey mead and the vegetarian sample is my go to order, but honestly everything is delicious and it's just a nice dining experience every time. Do give yourself plenty of time to enjoy.
This was a wonderful and authentic experience. We had the vegetarian platter for 2 followed by coffee. My husband and I definitely recommend this restaurant.
Had a nice time here with my friend. We tried their variety plate and was able to get a little bit of everything. Went during dinner so service was a bit slow but I enjoyed sharing a big platter with my friend. I was pleasantly surprised with the sambusa sauce - definitely try them if you can.
This place amazing!! The atmosphere is great and services is the best. The staff is very eager to serve and explain every detail in each dish perfectly. Ask for the Doro Tibs, it's very flavorful and super addictive.
It was my first time trying Ethiopian cuisine and I was truly impressed! Friends took me there, and the whole experience felt special — sharing dishes, eating with injera bread, and enjoying rich, aromatic flavors. The atmosphere is warm, the staff is friendly, and the food is full of character. I’ll definitely be coming back.
Going here was my first time trying Ethiopian food and I was blown away by how amazing it was. Everything we had was perfectly flavorful and delicious. The group I was with got a vegetarian sampler and we loved everything we got. Our server was also fantastic. Can't believe I've been missing out on this wonderful food up until now, will definitely come back here again!
Took my Grandmother here for her 84th Birthday and the food was amazing! The staff even helped my Grandmother from the car to the table while I searched for parking. You don't come across good people so often like that much appreciated!
We had date night and were back and forth on where we were going. So we decided on Ethiopian Diamond because he grew up over there and and always wanted to try them. It was a hit. Great customer service, clean restaurant, and the food was mind blowing.
Food was great, although the injera was too sour for my liking. The Ethiopian coffee was fabulous. My only complaint which knocks off a star for courtesy to guests is not mentioning there was a 20% gratuity that was going to be charged, as well as not mentioning it after the charge either. The 6 of us were discussing 20% calculation for tip and as I was writing out the tip, someone had flipped the receipt over to see that gratuity was already charged. Automatic gratuity for bigger parties is 100% acceptable but every restaurant I have worked in or been to has always communicated that to the guests. Not communicating that felt a bit sketchy and didn’t leave us feeling nice but besides that, the service was great. I just recommend mentioning the automatic charge to tables as some guests might get pretty upset with the lack of communication.
I've been to this place five times since 2016, and every single time the food and the service have been phenomenal. They never disappoint on either front. My husband eats meat, and I'm a vegetarian, making this a perfect place for us to choose what we want and still share a single meal together. Today, for the first time, I tried their honey wine mead, and it's so good! I usually order their coffee, but unfortunately, they didn't have the beans. Also, they didn't have mango for the mango drinks. That's the only reason I'm giving it four stars. Often, your favorite menu items might not be available.
My sister-in-law invited me to lunch, saying she had eaten a mysterious bread. It was fluffy and flat. Injera is a superfood, made by spreading fermented bread on a plate and eating it with side dishes on top. The side dishes are simply seasoned. At first I didn't know where the food was, but when I realized it was Ethiopian food, I identified the restaurant, so we headed there by car. There were two other groups of customers in the spacious restaurant facing the road. It was large enough to accommodate a party. A beautiful woman carefully introduced us to the menu. There were three of us, so we ordered a set menu for two and added two plates of sambusa, a deep-fried dish. The sambusa came out first. It is a deep-fried dish similar to an Indian samosa, and is eaten with sauce. The sauce was like chili sauce. Next came the injera, and I was surprised at how big it was. The woman gave me an orientation, saying that the injera was served like a roll. Her word "enjoy!" made an impression on me, and she was a wonderful person. We tore the injera into pieces and scooped up the side dishes to eat. The injera had a unique flavor. To me it tasted like shrimp nets. The side dishes were stir-fried beans, vegetables, meat, and similar things, and although they were hardly salty, they had a nice spiced bread flavor. The meat was chicken, mutton, beef. I don't remember if there was pork. You could add a spicy sauce to taste. The injera spread out over the dish was soft and delicious in the juices from the side dishes. It was a memorable lunch experience, not to mention the taste. It must have been a very high-end restaurant. I'd like to go again. When you go abroad, it's really fun to eat in that place!
This is my second time there. Let me be very clear, the food is tasty and delicious, the staff smiles and are friendly. However, they are very, very slow. We waited well over an hour for our food. (Don't go on a Sunday evening) and it took them about 10 minutes to acknowledge us waiting to be seated. I will visit again, but I will try to find a slower time.
A good neighborhood spot for locals and others. Real friendly and patient with a first timer. Except that you eat with your hand, picking from the platter with pieces of Ethiopian bread, it was daunting. Everyone will find something they like. Spicy or not. A regular hangout that makes it natural
We were greeted warmly from afar by the owner at Ethiopian Diamond, and the space was nice, though a bit too large for the number of guests. We ordered the Tibs Sampler, Meat Sampler, and a side of samosas based on our waitress’s recommendation. The samosas were good, but the main dishes were disappointing and repetitive sides, under-seasoned meats, and a lack of flavor overall. As an Ethiopian, I found the food to be far from authentic. On top of that, service was slow and inattentive. Our server brought the check to guests who arrived well after us and ignored us for a while. Overall, disappointed with the experience and it fell flat on both food and hospitality.
Tibs sampler was disappointing. The tibs were unevenly salted and didn't have many flavors. The vegetarian items were okay at best. The center salad was slightly oily and soggy. At this price point, there are many other Ethiopian places near by that would offer a bigger and better tasting platter with more variety.
