My third visit, and it never disappoints! The food is absolutely delicious — from the fresh veggies to the perfectly cooked meats and seafood, every bite was bursting with flavor. The cocktails were just as impressive! I loved the Wagyu beef fat–washed lemongrass cocktail! Great bartenders, great vibes. Highly recommend this spot.
I have too many good things to say about this place that words won’t be enough. For 5 years straight, this has got to be the absolute consistent restaurant I have ever been to in Chicago. I am a Vietnamese descent that is always in search for Vietnamese restaurants any time I move to another city. When I get homesick(Miss my Moms Cooking), I research to find my fix. I saw this place because their gold leaf sign for their next door location stood out. Hand painted signs is usually a good indicator for me as good product and attention to detail. I take my lady here whether it’s a birthday or a special occasion or just there for the great food, we get blessed. The service is amazing, the staff is absolutely delightful. As long as I’m in Chicago, I will keep going to this place as it’s given me a home outside of home. Shout out to Chef Thai though, you studied our Motherlands regions well.
We stopped in for a quick bite after a long drive from Michigan and were pleasantly surprised. The food was fresh, well-prepared, and full of flavor. Each dish had a nice depth and balance without being too heavy, and I found myself eating a bit too quickly because it was so satisfying. The Golden Sun cocktail had a refreshing citrus note with just the right kick from the ghost pepper, pairing nicely with the savory dishes. The cream puffs at the end were a fun bonus and the best I’ve had in a long time. If I lived nearby, I’d be coming back all the time.
The food, ambience, service everything was incredible. Best dishes of our night - octopus salad, grilled oysters, grilled eggplant, garlic butter prawns and crab fried rice. The chicken wings were delicious too. The Vietnamese curry was flavorful and had the right amount of sweetness and zest to it. The whole fried fluke by itself was okay (not great). We could have skipped the fish. We were a group of 4 and ordered 8 dishes to share. Lucky we got to try multiple dishes as a group. The restaurant was surprisingly packed by the time we started our courses despite it being very easy for us to get reservations.
Absolutely delicious! The atmosphere and ambiance is perfect for a date night or dinner with friends. The papaya salad was my favorite for sure. It was so unique and refreshing. I’m not one to ever look at the salad options but this was so worth it. I enjoyed the vegetarian emperor's noodles as well although it was a bit sweet for my taste. The garlic and spice did help balance it. The yellow curry was also delicious and well worth it.
Had a really enjoyable experience dining at the bar. The atmosphere and vibes are wonderful. The food was so good! I’d love to come back so I could try other dishes on their menu! We ordered the crab noodle dish that was delicious and my guava drink was also very refreshing. Forgot to take photos of those. The grilled seafood platter was cooked perfectly! Excited to come back!
Hubby and I stopped in during happy hour and took a seat at the cozy bar. The restaurant is beautifully designed with incredible wood accents. The staff is wonderfully friendly, and the service was excellent. We shared the crispy calamari, which sat on a sweet and spicy tamarind sauce. It was incredibly delicious, with the sauce providing an amazing tang and just the right amount of heat. We also shared the chicken wings brushed with caramelized fish sauce and chili. These were hands down the best chicken wings I have ever eaten—crispy and incredibly flavorful. For drinks, hubby ordered a Pilsner, and I opted for a cocktail called Cheap Thrills, made with Beefeater Gin, cucumber juice, coconut soda, and lemon. It was a tart and refreshing cocktail. We will absolutely be back again to enjoy more of this fantastic menu.
Their prefix menu was so fresh and new with flavor combos that were pleasantly surprising. The incorporation of tons of vegetables in a bomb of flavor was impressive and refreshing. I would highly recommend and make sure you arrive hungry!! The vibe is pretty casual which i love as well☺️.
Loved dinner at HaiSous, I enjoyed every dish. Highlights were the wings and green beans, they were so good. The rice and noodles were great too! Everything was flavorful, and cooked well. Portions were good too, there were leftovers. Drinks were interested and tasty as well. Overall I recommend and will definitely be back
Edit: 2 years later and I’m back. Consistency is key but at the same time changes are welcome. Out of all the places me and my foodie girlies came in Chicago this is our favorite. Even with a local Viet girlie that took us around who was missing the Viet food scene appreciate this place. She gonna bring her parents when they come Visit her. I am gonna be coming to this place for sure. For someone who’s partner is Vietnamese I don’t often venture out of trying non traditional Vietnamese restaurants because they are either super toned down in flavors to match the western pallet. However this place has blown me and my friends away from their service to the punch flavors of their dishes. We ordered the grilled seafood platter, chicken wings and the meat platter. This was plenty of food for three person. The sauces that the meat and seafood is paired with elevates the flavor of the protein. I wouldn’t say the dishes we ordered were any kind of fusion but it was still very traditional Vietnamese dishes presented well. I would come again to this restaurant and try their drinks and other dishes next time. Thanks for changing my perspective on Vietnamese fine dining here in the U.S.
The food was phenomenal, very tasty and it’s just like a big hit to your mouth after the first bite. A little hard to find a parking lot but worth it. Not a lot of dishes but quality is better than quantity. The price was a little high though, and the server checked on us often to make sure everything was good. Definitely will be back!!
Shared the meat platter between two people and it was plenty! The shrimp spring rolls had a mushy filling but still tasted good. The best meat on the platter had to be the lemongrass beef, which was so tender and perfectly seasoned. Oysters looked good but the taste was ok—I think the scallion/garlic oil took over the taste of the oysters. Chicken wings were ok, a little too much fish sauce, needed an acid to balance it more. We came here with vegans too so they had a quite a few dishes they could try. The service was good, nothing outstanding. Main courses took a while to come out but the server made up for it at the end with free dessert.
Had a nice happy hour last night. All the food was very fragrant and delicious. The papaya salad was a palate refresher as we made our way through the course of food. The seafood tower was definitely an experience. Throughly enjoyed everything. My only tip is to let the (hot) food cool down just a small bit prior to eating to embrace all the herbs and grasp the true flavors of the dishes. 10/10 recommend.
One person highly recommended this place as her favorite Vietnamese restaurant. Intrigued, we decided to give it a try one Friday evening. Luckily, we managed to snag a table, perhaps due to a last-minute cancellation. Arriving just in time for happy hour, we swiftly ordered from the discounted menu, enjoying the excellent value offered. It's a great opportunity to sample a wide variety of their dishes. We chose the meat platter, and it exceeded our expectations in terms of flavor and quality. Despite having visited numerous Vietnamese restaurants across the US, this platter stood out as one of the best meat dishes we've ever tasted. The atmosphere is also distinct from typical Vietnamese restaurants, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the experience. Additionally, their creative drink menu adds to the overall appeal. Overall, it's a good restaurant worth trying.
Haisous meaning "two pennies" is a beautiful homage to Vietnamese cuisine. We got to try their octopus salad, grilled eggplant, Hanoi styled noodles, fried calamari and fried rice. I particularly loved the cold octopus salad, grilled eggplant, and Hanoi style noodles. The aromatics pairing of the slimey eggplant texture against the smooth cold coconut cream base with fried basil leaves and onions were heavenly. I would definitely go back there over and over for that dish!
I found this lovely restaurant searching for Vietnamese food. I fell in love with this amazing cuisine during a trip to Vietnam, and I’m constantly looking for it in every city I visit. Well, HaiSous didn’t disappoint! If you want something traditional, it might not be your first choice, but if you want to experience a more elevated take on Vietnamese cuisine, then you must give them a try. Though they have some traditional dishes such as Bun Cha, Whole fried fish and Vietnamese Curry, the Chef also brings the amazing flavors to items like grilled oysters, octopus and steak. There is also a very unique and cost effective tasting menu which showcases a few of the menus most popular dishes and a nice selection of flavorful grilled seafood. Oh, and did I mention they have great cocktails?! Definitely worth a visit!
Tasty tasty tasty seafood! I loved the fried fish and the oysters. The fried fish is super well prepared and seasoned and comes with lettuce and great sauces. That was the highlight. And the cream puff dessert was good albeit a bit heavy. The food comes very quickly. Staff is super friendly and shoutout to David, a great server. Happy to return to HaiSous anytime.
I first went to HaiSous on the recommendation of a friend and have been twice now. So good! I'll be honest it's not ALL that. There are things that I would not order again, but the items that I really enjoyed on the menu are SOLID. All HH plates and drinks are $10 I've had the Revolutionist, Takes 2 to Mango, High Handed, and the Seasonal Margarita. All delicious, but I've decided the Revolutionist is my go-to. For food I've had the wings, papaya salad, chopped clams, grilled eggplant, octopus salad, calamari, and the jasmine rice. The wings cleared everything. Those are definitely my go-to moving forward. They're rich and tangy and declicious. 12 out of 10. The papaya salad is also very good, and I really liked the calamari with the tamarind sauce. Both 10 out of 10. The grilled eggplant and the chopped clams were good, but I think just not for me. 8 out of 10 on those. The octopus salad was similar. It was beautiful but the combination of octopus and coconut just did not do it for me. I think that's my personal taste though, nothing to do with the food. Same with the chopped clams. It just didn't do it for me. The rice was in a big bowl, it was a huge amount for $3, and drizzled the rest of the tamarind sauce from the calamari on top. OOOOOh that was so good. On future visits I'd do the revolutionist, maybe another cocktail as well, and the wings/calamari/papaya/veggies as my food rotation. I really enjoyed all of those plates and will easily be adding this to the HH roster. I hope I spell these names right-- I interacted with Harley and Renato. Very kind and sweet. PAY THEM MORE!!!!! Excited to try the a la carte menu items in the future.
Found this restaurant from the Michelin Guide as a Bib Gourmand restaurant. Meaning it a good quality, good value cooking restaurant. It is a bit on the pricey end, but you get what you pay for. The service was great. The staff were knowledgeable and attentive. They gave good recommendations and accommodating to our party's dietary restrictions. The Vietnamese vegetable curry was sooooo good. There wasn't enough rice to eat with it. Creamy and flavorful. The chicken wings were also pretty good, nice starter to share with the table. Definitely worth trying. As I was leaving, saw another table eating a fish that looked good. I'll be back to try the other things on the menu.
Second time coming here & second time getting the curry + chicken wings. Would come here every time for them. The grilled ribeye ($22) was so tender and marinated very well, portion size was just small. Colossal prawn and crab dish was delicious. The seafood swims inside a creamy, garlic sauce but they give you a side of horseradish(??) With a strong flavor to cut through the fatty cream sauce.
Tasty, authentic, and delicious. The location is a bit out of the way from the crowds and is well worth a journey to reach this well crafted restaurant. The drinks are well made and innovative. The chicken wings were crispy and strongly flavored. The papaya salad was crisp and packed a punch. The bun cha broth was amazing and the pork was tender. The biggest surprise was the vegetarian curry with daikon and bamboo which had much more flavor than expected.
Really cool spot and deceivingly large! The staff was kind and the restaurant week menu had a vegetarian version which I appreciated. The mushrooms weren’t my favorite but the papaya salad, kabocha curry, and chocolate rice pudding at the end were standouts
Highlights: papaya salad and rice pudding dessert. I am usually just “okay” with a papaya salad but this one balanced flavors better than you would typically find, it was more flavorful on account of not being watery, and they added a smart umami element with the beef strips and crunchy onions. The rice pudding was inundated with young coconut mash and coconut cream, and was served perfectly chilled - a deeply satisfying finish to the night. HaiSous is doing everything right.
Dined at Haisous last Thursday as a pre-wedding treat with some friends. We ordered a variety of dishes including the prawns, crab noodles, crab fried rice, chicken wings, and two of the eggplant side dishes. Everything was so flavorful and delicious. We ordered just the right amount with the help of our server and we finished every single morsel of food. Definitely will be back for more.
I came here for an anniversary dinner and it was a very solid meal! We ordered the Grand Tasting Menu and each of the courses came complete and were incredibly filling. We came expecting smaller portions for the tasting menu but we left very full. The appetizers were all pretty good, but the salad with guava was a standout! It was delightfully diverse in it's flavor profile with a little sweet a little salty and a little spicy. Truly delicious. The other standout for the meal for was the whole fish on the tasting menu. It was the perfect size for two people and the seafood sauce it came in was delicious. The service could be improved. We arrived early for a 7:00p reservation and it was dead- maybe one or two tables filled. The hostess gave us the option of sitting at the kitchen counter (views of the kitchen) which we politely declined and then she proceeded to sit us directly next to a couple already dining. The restaurant did fill up quickly but it quickly made what could have been an intimate atmosphere into feeling like we were eating in a food hall. The server we had was very very knowledgeable and charming but he was covering way too large of a section to be attentive. We sat with empty water glasses several times and even after we got a second round of cocktails, sat with the empty first round on the table. At one point I dropped my silverware and it took nearly 10 minutes for me to flag down the server to get a new setup. Again, very kind folks, but understaffed for the amount of customers that they had.
In my experience the workers were friendly. Food was great except some dishes were different from what you tasted like the papaya salad. Not saying it was bad but different. Everything else was good especially the Japanese whiskey old fashioned.
My wife and I tried the tasting menu and it was very good featuring some classic takes on Vietnamese dishes (my wife was born in Vietnam). Overall the food was very good, I didn't care as much for the shrimp dumplings but that is my personal taste (very strong shrimp flavor). The Hue fig salad was delicious and probably one of the best salads I have ever had, the barramundi and lime leaf chicken were excellent and the “Chè” khoai lang sweet potato was an excellent savory desert.
I was recently reintroduced to HaiSous, and had been there a couple times when they first opened after the ordeal with Embeya. I had not been back. I came with friends for happy hour which I didn't know they had and as a non profit worker, I love happy hour deals and I find it's a great way to introduce people to the flavors of your food and what they can expect. The service is really good, everything we had was really tasty and I had to go back a week later to try some of the other dishes on that menu. I'm excited to go back to keep trying and work myself up to that tasting menu. I would really recommend the food and the delicious drinks.
came here for a birthday dinner. nothing in particular stood out other than the whole fluke. the steak and wings were a little too salty. service was fast and friendly. in terms of seating, we were sat quickly. the tables were a tad bit too close to each other for our liking. additionally, they don’t do much for birthdays. when asked, they said they’ll put a candle on a paid dessert
Overall a good dining experience. Very friendly service, very modern and clean design with ample space. We opted to just order different dishes vs the tasting menu. Overall the food was good. Nice taste and nothing was bad…but nothing was amazing. Signature chicken wings were a bit dry, the curry was a little bland, etc. it’s a great place to bring a date, entertain out of town guests or bring people you want to impress. But if I want more “authentic” Vietnamese food I would go to Argyle…which still has its shortcoming vs eating in Vietnam but it’s much closer.
We went here for restaurant week, and it was a wonderful choice. The service was top-tier, and the ambience was very welcoming and warm. The prefixed food menu was delicious and more than enough as a family style meal. Will definitely come back again to try other things on the menu.
HaiSous offers great modern Vietnamese cuisine, and we found most of the dishes during our visit to be enjoyable. The interior of the restaurant is very modern and sleek. Among the highlights were the octopus salad, grilled ribeye, and grilled eggplant. Each dish was well seasoned with a great balance of refreshing flavors and spices. However, the Bun Cha fell short of our expectations in terms of flavor and tasted fairly standard, particularly considering its price point as an entree. Service was attentive and courteous throughout our meal. One minor drawback was the close proximity of tables in our dining area, which made it more difficult to fully enjoy our meal due to the loud conversations nearby and limited privacy.
Wasn't in love with the place, especially for the price. We went on Christmas eve and got the tasting menu worth wine pairing. After being sat, we waited for a while for someone to come by, and when he did, he didn't really introduce himself or even ask if we wanted any drinks. He started walking away before we flagged him back to order cocktails. Before those cocktails arrived he came back to take our food order. The food came before our cocktails and wine pairing. The first course was good, but we found it a bit odd they'd give us 3 shrimp fritters for 2 people, plus no spoon with the sauce. The second course was a crab boil, the crab legs were not split and we didn't even get extra napkins or an extra plate to put shells on. I also added on a side of fried rice, which wasn't fried with any sauce or vegetables, just white rice with scallions. Everything was fine, but the $300 bill seemed like a lot for what we got.
HaiSous Vietnamese Kitchen is undeniably good - which is why the hype left me somewhat confused. Every dish was enjoyable, yet nothing truly stood out as exceptional. The Bò Nướng Tỏi came closest, featuring beautifully cooked Australian Wagyu with vibrant lemongrass and chili-lime flavors. The Bún Xào Cua was pleasant but forgettable. Well-cooked noodles, decent flavor, but missing depth or character. The cookie crust cream puff with Vietnamese coffee filling was simple, lightly sweet, and easily shareable — satisfying but not memorable. Cocktails were good, and the ambience well decorated with open kitchen and chefs’ counter add energy to the space. Service was attentive. Parking can be challenging.
The wait staff is very attentive. She gave good suggestions too. We ordered multiple fried octopus, octopus salad, papaya salad, chicken wings, prawns, Hanoi style noodle, and veggie curry. Most sauces are sweet and sour (fish sauce). They are good but not wow-good. The curry is the least flavorful curry dish I’ve had in my life. Only the Hanoi style noodle stood out. It has a decent cocktail selection
The waiter was not able to tell us how big the portion was, it turns out we had too much food. Overall this time s an American kind of asian food, no authentic flavor. Many dishes are too sweet.
Unfortunately this was a letdown First of all I have to say we were immediately thrown off by the fact that they refuse to take our appetizer/starters order they demanded that they can only take the full order all at once. which is such a ridiculous request literally we were the only table in the restaurant besides two people sitting at the bar but they somehow have a policy that you have to decide your entire order and give it all at once versus getting any starters going. Besides that I don’t know if it was the timing because they had just opened or what but the service from our server who apparently was the bartender was horrible. we sat down for a long time waiting for someone to ask us for anything and then finally I guess the bartender is the one that served us and he just seemed like he really wasn’t into talking to us or serving. he didn’t check on us barely at all the entire time There was a sweet busboy guy that was really nice who eventually did things like give us water and clear plates and then brought me the dessert menu ( which I’d askes for in the very beginning ) but the bartender seemed like he just couldn’t be bothered to check on us Now onto the food - unfortunately everything was just kind of average we ordered a Wagyu steak that tasted just fairly bland even with the extra little sauces and salt they gave you it was nothing special, of course the meat itself was good cause it’s Wagyu was cooked well but I don’t understand why there’s not enough of Vietnamese spices in a flavor going on their house garlic fried rice just tasted like plain fried rice you can get anywhere And not even that much flavor. The chicken wings were just OK cooked well but the sauce was not very flavorful I will say the one standout dish and the reason why this is a three star review instead of a one star review is the noodle soup with pork patties it was a surprise hit imagine a very very flavorful pho. We all loved that
I visited HaiSous Vietnamese Kitchen for brunch with high expectations given its strong reviews and appealing Vietnamese décor. Unfortunately, the experience didn't fully live up to the hype. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated and the staff was attentive, which made for a welcoming atmosphere. The presentation of the food was also impressive, showcasing care and detail. However, the taste of the dishes was inconsistent. Some items hit the mark, delivering the vibrant flavors I was hoping for, while others missed, leaving me wishing for more depth and balance. This inconsistency made the meal somewhat disappointing, especially considering the prices, which I found to be on the higher side for what was offered. In summary, while HaiSous has a lot going for it in terms of atmosphere and food presentation, the overall dining experience was a bit of a letdown. I wanted to love everything on the table, but it ended up being a mixed bag.
We were there Friday evening, Vibes are good ,we had a server that had an accent come to find out she is French, I know this because I was trying to pronounced the dishes correctly and she had no idea,it was hard to understand her and to hear her as the restaurant was very loud, We order the calamari, was great! Light crunchy and lightly breaded, the rest of of the dishes were quite a disappointment, there was nothing elevated, very basic and quite honest for the price not worth it. Yeah...I really wish the food had more flavor.
We recently dined at Hai Sous and while we enjoyed the food and atmosphere, our experience was impacted by how a gluten restriction was handled. We informed the bartender at the start that one of us has a gluten intolerance. After the tasting menu changed to a seafood-based version, we were offered an accommodated menu with the meat platter. Unfortunately, it was never communicated that the meat platter was not fully gluten-free. After eating several pieces, I became bloated and uncomfortable and was later told the shrimp roll contained gluten. Our check was also marked with a gluten allergy, which made this oversight more concerning. While I’m not allergic, my intolerance causes significant stomach issues, and this could have been much more serious for someone with an allergy. The bartender apologized and offered a drink, but there was no follow-up from management. While the food was good, clearer communication and better handling of dietary restrictions are needed.
I had high hopes and was very excited to finally dine here. I love Vietnam and Vietnamese cuisine. Specifically northern style cuisine is my favorite! There were high points and there were some low points. The maître upon entering was very kind and hospitable. We did not have a reservation and we were sad immediately. The atmosphere in styling inside is absolutely stunning! The open kitchen where you can see the fire roaring, and I was imagining grilled shrimp, grilled oysters, grilled pork .. It was a delight for the senses. Crispy chicken wings- fabulous! The flavor, the crunch, the meat was tender. The sauce was umami and perfect. Grilled Oysters- meh. They came out room temperature. Nothing about the flavor gave “grilled”. The shucking was done wonderfully, no shells anywhere. The take on Minette was delicious. But overpower the taste of the oyster. Had the oyster actually been grilled and warm, the flavor of the sauce on top would’ve really been a cohesive edition instead of overpowering. I asked the server if the oysters were supposed to be warm/hot, they replied no. They simply grilled the shell but not the oyster inside. Not what o was expecting, I wouldn’t order again. Bun Cha- fine. Whenever I see this on the menu, I will always order as it was my favorite dish in Hanoi. We received the dish just slightly above room temperature. The meat was lukewarm warm at best. The take on the fish sauce base for dipping was served as a broth. I love fish sauce, and this, at room temp was over powering. Mentioned to the server, is this intentionally not steaming hot? No it should be hot. The took it away and brought out a steaming bowl. It was much better hot and the flavors popped. But, for me personally, the dipping sauce is too rich to be served as a soup. I may go back on a Sunday to try to Pho… it’s quite hard to find Hanoi style Pho (which it DELICIOUS). Over all, 4.4 stars makes sense.
Honestly very disappointing experience, the restaurant had a nice vibe, and I went with my partner for our anniversary dinner. I made an early reservation for happy hour, however we were told only upon arrival that it was only at the bar. We didn't mind and moved to sit at the bar, however we were forced by the host to move to a different area of the bar even though the restaurant was empty and it was 5pm, if someone had wanted to sit in the same space, we would've moved, but since it was empty it just felt a bit much. The hostess was constantly giving us attitude and it was starting to bother me, like she didn't want us to have a good experience. In addition, no one ever wished us a happy anniversary, which I noted on the reservation and thought it was something that at least would be brought up on arrival. The bartender was kind but obviously wasn't as trained on service as the main staff may be and didn't ask us for dietary preferences, so we ended up with a dish with meat that was meant to be vegetarian. The papaya salad was ok, it needed more seasoning and didn't have any spice at all. The crab fried rice was pretty good, but was missing some depth of flavor or richness that could've been better with a fried egg on top or something of the sort. The highlight was the emperor noodles with crab, which was my favorite dish and was rich, garlicky, and buttery with a strong crab flavor. Finally, as we left the host didn't even acknowledge us as I said thank you, while we left which honestly left a bad taste in my mouth. Front of house service was especially disappointing and as much as I wanted to enjoy this experience, I found myself let down on so many fronts. Having worked in food service at similarly priced high-quality establishments, I really expected better.
I was born in Hanoi; in the two decades that I spent there, I have eaten my fill of many Hanoian dishes, especially bún chả. I had a fair share of misses: the sauce was bland, there was not enough noodles or vegetables, or the meat was undercooked. You get the picture. Never have I eaten something that was distinctly and clearly *not* bún chả. I cannot say the same about HaiSous' "bún chả Hà Nội," which I had tonight. In Hanoi, bún chả does not ever come with a broth-based dipping sauce. I warmly invite Chef Thái to give an example of a single renowned eatery serving this dish with such a sauce. I will be sure to visit it. The nem rolls were dense, thick-skinned, and the filling soggy with oil. Neither the patties nor the slices (which were closer to chunks) were caramelized on the grill, and both tasted distinctly of having been braised. The scattered char marks on the meat did not convince me that I wasn't eating some kind of fusion chashu. The patties were meatballs cut in half with no colour or texture to them. To add insult to injury, there was a live charcoal grill in the kitchen -- the one thing that makes or breaks a good plate of bún chả -- and as far as I could tell from the chef counter, that grill was primarily decorative. I would have been perfectly content to enjoy a plate of "Chef Thái's bún chả" -- in fact, I would have enjoyed the food far more if it was made clear to me that this was Chef Thái's own creation/interpretation of/variation on a beloved dish. When I walked in, I hoped that I would be able to come home, at least for a glorious few minutes. I have never felt so far removed from Hanoi. I understand that Chef Thái left Vietnam at a very young age (per my waiter) and that his mission is 1) to connect with his roots and 2) to introduce the wider public to Vietnamese foodways. As a Vietnamese man who misses the taste of his homeland, I am completely on board with this vision. As a lover of food and cooking, I'm afraid that the chef's attachment to his roots has eclipsed the actual merit of his creations. It is quite common to give praise to similar efforts to learn about a homeland and to describe these efforts, sympathetically yet vaguely, as a love of one's "roots." It is tragic that quality and craft usually come last in the list of considerations for these honorable mentions. If I loved Hanoi and its food in such a way that I could serve this dish and call it Hanoian, I must have eschewed all respect I have for my birthplace's cuisine and culture, because there is absolutely nothing Hanoian about it. The acoustics in the restaurant, or at least, in my section, were so badly designed that I could hear the entirety of the conversations at the other end of the chef's counter, which was 8-10 feet away from me. Beautiful decor. Service was wonderfully attentive.
Came for Chicago Restaurant Week 2026. Dinner was $60 per person, served family style. The appetizers were nice (the chopped clams being the winner), but the main platter’s portion was so tiny, and considering that the proteins were just pork sausage and (dry) chicken, it was definitely not worth the price. The banana rice pudding dessert was also lackluster and again had the teeniest portion. Service was good though with constant water refills and a change of plates but I don’t see myself coming back after this experience. Wished we did à la carte instead :(
Debated on 1 vs 2 stars and decided for that $400 between 5 people, this was a TERRIBLE restaurant week spot. See photos attached - that was course 1 and 2 for FIVE people. The 2 plates of sausages/chicken were for FIVE people to share. 1 plate could've been for 1 person. The chicken was dry. There was no sauce (nuoc mam) at a minimum to pair with the sausage. This was NOT worth $80/each person (tax included). I don't leave reviews much, but this was an absolute disappointment. If I had read reviews prior to tonight, I would've known. So unfortunate.
If you are Vietnamese or Asian, save your time and skip this place. The food was under seasoned, underwhelming, and way too pricey for what you get. We ordered the papaya salad, chicken wings, the meat platter with the extra wagyu add on, and the crab fried rice. Everything was bland. All the meats on the platter tasted identical with the same flat seasoning. The textures were all the same and some pieces were overly chewy. The extra 26 dollars for the wagyu was a waste since it had no flavor and was tough. Overall, the food was below mid. You are better off going to Chinatown where you can get something cheaper and actually flavorful.
I almost never leave negative reviews, but this experience was so alarming that I feel obligated to warn others. During our recent visit, we ordered grilled prawns, and what we received raised immediate red flags. Some prawns were firm and acceptable, but many were disturbingly soft, mushy, and had an off-putting flavor — clear signs that they may have been dead long before cooking, with muscle breakdown already underway. This represents a serious food safety violation. Shockingly, one of my friends began vomiting shortly after eating, which speaks volumes about the potential health risks. To make matters worse, one member of our group, who has traveled extensively throughout Southeast Asia, confirmed that the flavors were completely inauthentic and bore little resemblance to true Vietnamese cuisine. The service was chaotic and careless. Multiple wrong dishes were delivered, communication was disorganized, and staff showed little urgency or professionalism when addressing mistakes. The entire operation felt sloppy and unsafe. Given the combination of severe food safety concerns, false representation of cuisine, and grossly inadequate service, I strongly urge others to avoid this restaurant. It is unacceptable that such basic standards of hygiene and management are not being met. We will not return, and I sincerely hope appropriate action is taken to address these serious issues.
Overpriced and food was very bland. If you want authentic Vietnamese food, go elsewhere. Also, they kicked us out after 90 mins with the party (when there were plenty of open tables). What a rude restaurant! The worst Vietnamese food I've ever tasted.
I want to start off by saying I came here for my birthday with family and was super excited to try HaiSous because my sister had recommended this place for the food. I have never felt more unseen in a place where I am spending a good amount of money to eat. I was stuck in a table in the corner and it took 20+ minutes to get our drink order in. On top of the twenty minute wait to be acknowledged, the server took an additional 15 minutes to grab the wine bottle the table had ordered to share. I saw the bottle sitting on the bar top the whole 15 minutes and the server proceeded to make eye contact with me like he was holding my wine hostage. The staff never acknowledged the special occasion (which was listed in the reservation notes), which honestly is wild because why would they even put that as an option to list a special occasion if they don’t even want to acknowledge the guests or make the occasion feel special. I saw a table get seated next to us and they got their drinks within the first 10 minutes. To see every other table in our section get touched except us within the first 15 minutes of seating was absolutely unacceptable and should’ve been enough for me to leave, but I wanted to give them a chance as I had never been to Haisous before. Nobody came to even water our table or introduce themselves. We were the only table with people of color. When there is a clear gap in quality of service and we happen to be the only minority table this gives off a very distasteful experience. This restaurant may be in a POC neighborhood but this establishment is not for us and that was made very clear when I was treated so poorly for what was supposed to be a special dinner. As an asian woman, let me tell you this place is greatly outshined by the worst place you can find in chinatown, and you wont need to spend $300 for a WAY better experience. Whilst watching other tables being checked on by staff, my table was the only one not serviced. The food was great and honestly the only saving grace for this restaurant. After dinner, rather than offering us the dessert menu which we were interested in, our server comes up to the table and says “are you done or are you ready for the check?” No smile, miserable look in his eyes as if he didn’t want to be at work or something, this honestly completely spoiled the experience we ended up passing on dessert because we just couldn’t stand another minute of this. Mind you, at that point the special occasion was STILL not acknowledged, I have even been to Maggianos’s Little Italy and they’ve given WAY better attention to detail and service. Honestly, you’re probably better off at the local Burger King if you want better service.
Credentials: I'm asian. This was the worst Vietnamese food I've ever had in my life. You could take the worst food in Uptown and they'd give this place a run for their money. The food here was a mix of bland and candy sweet. But at least the staff seems nice. Here's the breakdown: Chopped Clams: Where are the clams? Oh behind a wall of sweet sauce. Can you taste the clams? Uhhh I think so, reminds me of canned seafood Papaya salad: This would make any SEA walk out. The "papaya" gritty, the sauce was maybe sweet soy sauce. I could feel my ancestors crying and I'm not Vietnamese Emperor noodle: Noodles with crab. I think I found a piece or two of crab. But I couldn't taste that or the noodle because everything was covered in a sauce that puts candy to shame. Fluke: By far the most disappointing. Price ranges 75-95 depending on size. The fish was not seasoned at all. It was also in no means fresh. At the very least it was old. The fish disintegrated and became mealy. The caucasity of this place. I was really excited for this place but if you are reading this.....just go to Chinatown or argyle and save yourself the time and money
