Had dinner last night and the traditional German plates at Chicago’s oldest restaurant were amazing. We were seated and ordered their Adams Street Brewery drinks and the bread basket appetizer which included their homemade rye bread. Our server, Marsha, was so attentive—a joy! My Veiner Schnitzel pan fried veal cutlet with creamed spinach over spatzle was delicious. Family had the sausage trio-bratwurst, knockwurst and smoked Thuringer, along with a side of sauerkraut. If you wish to dine be aware that they close at 8pm! Definitely will be back.

I have wanted to visit this restaurant since I was a kid, and yesterday I finally got to. From the moment you walk in, you feel like you have been transported to another time with the warm golden artwork and lighting. Definitely an amazing ambiance! The potato pancake appetizer was awesome, and so was the cedar plank salmon (cooked perfectly!). Beer selection was great, and tasted lovely as well. Our server was kind and attentive and we felt like we were regulars even though it was our first time visiting. We can't wait to visit again!

Considered the oldest family-owned restaurant in the US, the Berghoff has a lot of rich history. I went while it was decorated for Christmas and it was gorgeous. I tried the Lemon Tortellini, first time I had that dish, and now I want to learn how to make it at home. So delicious! I also enjoyed the non-alcoholic “Cozy Blanket” mocktail. I could drink that all day. I’m not always into German restaurants, but this was definitely a great find!!

The Berghoff Restaurant is such a cute, happy, and welcoming place. It’s always like that, but especially at Christmas time. The chicken schnitzel is wonderful, the pretzel is delicious, and the Black Forest cake is a must. The service is truly amazing, friendly, attentive, and it makes the whole experience even better. We always come back for a lovely dinner whenever we’re in Chicago, and it never disappoints!

The place deserves its 5-star rating. The service was amazing! We had a kid, and the team took great care of her 🙏🏻 The food was delicious. I’d recommend game sausages instead of classic sausage trio. Potato pancakes are a must🤌🏻

Great German food. We were visiting for work in the area and stopped in for lunch. I got the ASB burger which was phenomenal. So good we went back for dinner later that week and I tried the meatloaf, but it was not quite as good as the burger. The meatloaf could have been more firm, but instead was a bit mushy. Potatoes were great, carrots and asparagus were cooked perfectly and seasoned well. The beer was definitely the star of the evening. They brew their own beer as well.

Fantastic! Felt like we were in Germany. Food was outstanding and service from the hosts and Maria were incredible. We were warmly welcomed in and thoroughly enjoyed the Christmas decorations. The sausage trio and Hungarian goulash were on par with authentic German/European dishes and the strudel was equally brilliant. Thank you to everyone at the Berghoff

Marsha is an absolute asset, do everything you can to keep her. We had a group of 8 for lunch before a city crawl for the holidays and it was exceptional. After a few flannel shirts the tidings were glorious, service impeccable and we even had a Santa sighting! We had some broken glass mishap, and the staff not only replaced nearby entrees but brought a new drink on the house and a comped dessert to make our friend feel less anxious about the mishap. The Christmas decor and beverages alone are worth the trip, but the staff have been there forever and there’s a reason. Highly recommend, it’s a 1 of 1 iconic spot.

Historic (old) restaurant that wins by today’s standards and more. Great food! Large choice. Great service. German pretzels, potato pancakes and hot dogs of all sorts. Family friendly with a bar area for adults.

An STAPLE In DOWNTOWN CHICAGO's Historical Restaurant Industry! I First Went there...in 2000. My Landlord (Mr. Ronald Flores) at The Time Took Me there After Discussing Business Arrangements..that ended Poorly. But, It Was a Beautiful Lunch. The Next Time I Went..Was Around Christmas DEC. 2014 With My Daughter & Her Manager, Steve. (My daughter Is an International Model from Chicago, IL). Haven't been to The Berghoff since I was a kid, so visiting again for Date Night was a real treat. Having reservations really helped speed up our wait time to under 10 minutes, we were seated within minutes of our reservation time. Our server was friendly and very personable. The food was delicious 😋. We are looking forward to visiting again, next time with a group. My girl convinced me to try the liverwurst, teyi it you'll like it! So much better that than stuff they sell at the deli. 😂 I went back for seconds.

Atmosphere was great. We sat at the front of the restaurant and got the view of the brew, which was neat! Went during a quieter time, though food and service were great. Came out quick and the flavors were authentic.

My favorite Chicago restaurant, been around for over 100 years, excellent German food, great atmosphere, woodwork n original paintings, they brew their own beer as well. If you've never been here you are missing out. If you park in the Adams Street parking garage, your server will validate your parking, it was only $17 for 1.5 hours or so.

My friends and I came during christmas time to celebrate a birthday and the end of the quarter. All our meals were delicious and the christmas decorations are gorgeous!! I personally had the ASB burger, pretzel, and black forest cake. The burger was a standout! Our server was also phenomenal - we really loved her.

Old-world feeling restaurant and bar, great spot for a drink or their classic root beer. Classic holiday decorations up right now, adding an extra coziness to the atmosphere. Service at the bar was friendly and efficient.

I loved everything about Berghoff! Had a quick lunch while visiting Chicago September and the food and service were both great. Started with the potato pancakes which were heavenly. I got the Rueben and a side of German potato salad, the potato salad being my favorite. I had the Rueben, which was very good, but definitely could’ve used more thousand island to make it perfect.

⸻ I don’t really know how authentic German cuisine should taste, so it’s hard for me to judge it as “German.” I expected a bit more from the sausages. The strudel was tasty, though for me it had a bit too many raisins. The cabbage was extremely sour. The beer, however, was delicious. Dishes range from $20 to $30 per portion. The food was served quickly.

The food is flavorful and well-prepared, with plenty of choices whether you want something traditional or a little lighter. The staff are attentive and friendly, which makes the dining experience smooth from start to finish. It’s a nice place to enjoy a good meal in the heart of Chicago.

We visited this restaurant for the second time and once again, we absolutely loved the food. Today’s special was outstanding, and what truly made our dinner memorable was the wonderful service. Susan, our server, was friendly, cheerful, and attentive, making our evening very enjoyable. Highly recommended!

Wonderful place to go to for Oktoberfest or any other time for great German fare!!! I’ve been coming here on almost every trip to Chicago while visiting family, found it 23 years ago after reading a Chicago tourism book. I took my friend and cousins here on my first visit and fell in love with this place! The food is excellent and I absolutely love the turn of the century charm that it’s held for over 125 years! The service is always up to par and it’s a perfect setting for parties, get togethers, date nights, solo visit, ect…. I’m so happy that they’re still around especially with the scare that they were gonna close several years back…. They made the right decision to stay open! See you on my next trip! The picture of the man sitting solo eating just struck me for a reason, so I captured the moment in an artistic way…. Seems like he might be a regular.

My favorite place to eat in Chicago. The atmosphere is amazing! The service is always top notch and the food is delicious. You can’t get reservations around Christmas time but if you show up when they open, you can get in, no problem. We have a party of 7 and are always seated quickly and treated well. I always look forward to our annual trip to the Berghoff 💛

Absolutely phenomenal spot! Food and service were truly amazing. Susan must be one of the best servers I’ve had and I’m from the industry. Highly recommend for a great wholesome meal! Go traditional and order the Wiener schnitzel and don’t skip on dessert.

What a magical night we had and the topper was this restaurant. Santa came around to all of the tables such a sweet cozy unassuming man. Thank you so much we had such a good time. The food we tried, fried green tomatoes, perogies, stuffed mushrooms, chicken and fries, and a Bavarian pretzel oh and I tried the spiced wine and for dessert a white mousse. Thank you!

T

A classic old school German restaurant. The Berghoff is serving up delicious, hearty food with excellent service. My server, Esther, was fantastic. She made me feel welcomed from the get-go. The Bavarian pretzel with the cheese sauce was delicious. The bratwurst with sauerkraut on a toasted pretzel roll was really tasty. The side salad was very good as well. The massive amounts of wood paneling and wall size murals really add to the experience. Highly recommend the Berghoff for food and service!

On the last night of a very long business trip, my colleagues and I stopped at Berghoff Restaurant - we read that it was an iconic place so we wanted to check it out! This is a MUST try place! Chris, our server, was amazing! He was very attentive, had a great sense of humor and made fantastic recommendations. The food was super authentic - I love perogies and the fresh root beer was delicious! The dessert was amazing too! Portions are on the larger side (especially the mashed potatoes!) but it felt like a good value.

The food was very good. And this place has the best beer I have ever tried in the US. The atmosphere was very calm, there wasn’t a lot of people. The place itself is very pretty and service was amazing. Servers would come up to us to give some water EVERY TIME we would run out - we wouldn’t even ask them. They are very attentive to their customers. The wait for food wasn’t long at all, and food selection was wide.

This is a touristy place that doesn't feel gimmeky. Loved the brewery decor and older aesthetic of this late 1800s establishment. We received good service and got apps to share - Potato pancakes - Cheese curds - Bratwurst - Pierogies Everyone was delicious with various flavor profiles but the sauces for the curds and pierogies were the stars. Great drink and beer options as well going with a stout and lager!

So good we returned for a second night in a row! The food is absolutely delicious and the variety of beers are all lovely. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals here and would strongly recommend to anyone looking to eat downtown. Our severs were Christopher and Olivia and they were both very friendly and provided good service. Others members of staff whose names we did not catch also provided brilliant service to us. Happy we came and will return! Can recommend the Ghoulash, Beef Medallions, Weiner Schnitzel and the pork cutlets. For dessert we had the apple strudel and cherry cake and both were very good too. Do recommend making a reservation just to be sure you get seated

Ate lunch at the bar. Great Chicago classic oozing with history and charm. Delicious German Sausage and the beer was delicious. Families were having late summer lunches and it was nice to see the place buzzing with people.

2nd oldest restaurant in Chicago which was really cool with all the history around Went for restaurant week and thought it was a great deal with great food. Would definitely recommend for restaurant week and will be back for more!

The Root beer was fire! The beer names were fun and they bring out the big Steins like in Germany. Old school place. The food was authentic German. I loved the German potato salad and sauerkraut. My German friend told me to put the sour cream and the apple sauce atop the potato pancake. Oh and I love the Alsatian onion apple soup. It was so simple. Felt like comfort food. The prices were reasonable. Prost! 🍻

My husband and I are always on the hunt for amazing, authentic German cuisine. This place did not disappoint. We got the German Apple Onion Aleascian Soup and it was mind blowing! The sauerbraten and jeager schnitzel was so delicious. Makes me wish we lived closer so we could have this meal on the regular. The Dunkel beer was tops as well! Can not wait to get back here!

I’ve been here many times over the years, and I always order the pierogies appetizer and the Reuben. The food is always great, and the service is consistently good.

Delicious Bavarian style food! I highly recommend this place if you're looking for German, Austrian, and Hungarian flavors. The goulash is superb, the beer is local and also delicious, and the atmosphere makes it a great place to have a pint with your pals or have a cozy date. Strongly recommend this restaurant for a relaxed dining experience. If you're looking for a quick bite, try ordering ahead and bringing it home as the dishes will take a bit to arrive at the table.

This place was a fantastic find in Chicago! We got there around 4:30 and got right in, although it did fill up fast after 5. The server was very attentive, the plates were cleared promptly. Food was served quickly, and it was all fantastic. The building is beautiful, and it's a very interesting place to eat. A little high priced, but well worth it!

Bright and cozy atmosphere. The staff are very friendly. The food is delicious and the portions are just right. The pan-fried pork chop is tender, and the fried chicken cutlet has a crispy exterior. The German-style gnocchi is quite unique. This feels like a popular restaurant frequented by locals. Recommended.

I visited The Berghoff Restaurant in Chicago and was charmed by its old-world Germanic décor, cozy wood tones, and warm beer hall ambiance. I ordered the Jaeger schnitzel and house-made bratwurst—both were hearty and flavorful, though the schnitzel’s sauce was a bit overly rich for my taste. The root beer and Black Forest cake stood out as delightful treats that felt authentically classic. Overall, the experience felt like stepping into Chicago history with genuinely satisfying food and ambiance.

Well originally I wanted to go to the Edelweiss up close to Norridge, Illinois but they were closed on Tuesdays after work. So I decided to go on Wednesday to this place before I did my research and it was very good. Surprisingly, it's an antiquated restaurant that's was established 1898 and is still operating .Anyways, in regards to the food it was your decent traditional German food. I had a hard time deciding since there where so many German dishes. I went to start off which was a substitute to French onion soup called the Apple onion soup. It tastes almost like a french onion but less salty and less cheesy it was delicious and the Apple was not too sweet thinking that the Apple would overpower the onion for a soup is an appetizer. It was a tough call between the German trio which was your traditional bratwurst, knockwurst and therringer sausage. The other was the game sausage platter which had duck sausage, venison sausage and pork sausage. I'll probably come back again for that one but was really wanting more of a common traditional German staple since I haven't had German food for a long time. I'm glad I chose what I chose the bratwurst was cook very well and tasted delicious the knockwaurst was tasty too. It is almost close to a Polish calabasa sausage which you have to cut in and the therarringer saugage was also okay it's a mix of veal and pork for that kind of sausage. It was served with a potato salad that was served warm which is hearty and German sauerkraut which was also good. they didn't make the sauerkraut too sweet or too saucy versus grocery store sauerkraut. Service was pretty quick and friendly. Ambience was very classy with a lot of these paintings of the city of Chicago and I guess the Columbia expedition of 1898 which they still had next to the chandeliers. Most German restaurants they use panel wood but this one despite being wood was more classy and not so dark in ambiance. Another thing that surprised me was I was expecting this to be a bougie place to eat since it's in downtown Chicago spending almost $100 on my spell but it's really not that expensive. For if you are in downtown Chicago and had a craving for German just come over here. I am ending my meal with the black forest cake hopefully it's as good as the bakery called Lutz up north to bed for another bakery called Dinkels that close 2 years ago

Food was great! Service, well, never saw her after the food was dropped off. Entire section was forgotten. Had to ask the hostess just to get her to get the bill. Order everything you want at once. Drinks were never refilled, like I said we were basically forgotten. Finally when we got the bill, I had to point out the 2 other tables that needed drinks refilled. I've been a waitress and a hostess and they need to communicate. If the waitstaff is not capable of the amount of tables, stop seating them. Simple.

The staff are incredibly kind. I came here before they were open where me and a few others were waiting for them to open, the owner (I assume) came out early and let us in about 10 minutes early. My waiter was friendly and since it wasn't busy we had a short conversation. The interior is beautiful. The art, wood work, furniture, etc. Creates a great atmosphere. I ordered the game sausage which was fantastic! I also ordered their cake, which was good but I wish it had a different texture. I wasn't a big fan of the chunks of coconut or whatever within. I think altering the texture would improve the overall taste and quality. Their beer was also quite good. If I lived in Chicago I would gladly come here more often!

This Chicago institution serves outstanding traditional German food. It's expensive though. The weiner schnitzal was almost $30. Wonderful atmosphere and terrific service; but you'll pay for it.

A

It is nice that this place still exists to give a historical ambiance. This is a place for casual dining. The food is competent, but unexciting. Lacking in spice, but it is German food? The spaetzele is obviously homemade, but bland. Affordable? Perhaps go to the adjacent pub to watch sports and eat the same food, instead.

R
R. Michael Burns

Nice pub-like atmosphere, quick service. The food was good, but not the best schnitzel I've had. I did really like the giant pretzel, though. And the schnitzel wasn't bad by any means, just not top tier in my experience. Still, if I spent more time in Chicago I'd be tempted to go back and try one of the sausage dishes. And indulge in another pretzel.

We were excited to visit and had reservations 30 days in advance. When we arrived they said they didn’t have our reservation (it could’ve been an error on our part). We asked for suggestions from the server and she said to read the menu. We ordered the roast beef sandwich, turkey, turkey BLT, sausage trio, and the deconstructed chicken cordon bleu. Everything was okay. We ordered the pretzel appetizer (delicious) and the perogies (good, but pricy). We went in the early evening. Restroom was clean. We probably wouldn’t return, but the atmosphere was decorated for the holidays.

M
Micah A

Over-seasoned, Inauthentic flavors. Having lived in Germany several years, this place really misses the mark. Both people beside me thought the same. Over salted goulash. Massively vinegared sauerkraut. My sausages were fine (hard to mess those up), and the potato salad was okay—maybe a creative twist—but nowhere near the real thing. Overall, pretty disappointing, unfortunately. not really a place to return, which is a shame because the space is quite beautiful.

The Berghoff was an interesting experience. The food was good, however the service left a lot to be desired. We were waiting for long periods between orders. I was expecting more from a storied establishment like The Berghoff. The decor on the walls was cool though.
