From start to finish, an amazing experience! I have been multiple times in the last 2 months because I have so much fun, the food is amazing and the staff is wonderful! From the moment we checked in with the lead Hostess, Nordon, she was sooo sweet and accommodating! I absolutely LOVE the bar area, there has been a piano man playing the last three times I've gone (not sure if he's there every night, but I have seen him there on Thursdays and Fridays! I've sat at the bar a couple times and I had the pleasure of having Greg serve us and he's 1. A great bartender 2. The nicest and most fun to be served by! The food... yummy! I have NEVER been interested in trying frog legs, but so many people posted and it is called Hugo's FROG bar... so I decided to be adventurous, let me say.. did NOT disappoint. That sauce it is in is heavenly... it has gone from appetizer option to my straight up entree option ... I like to get a side of fries... thin and crispy, delicious to dip in the frog leg sauce! My sister RAVED about the crab cakes and carrot cake and YUMMMM! I don't like crab cake or Rockefeller oysters and everything was delicious. Hands down, best I've had! The drinks are well made and strong! I will be back for sure! A lot!
We chose this place for my birthday dinner, and it was the best meal we've had in a long time, both in Chicago and Nashville! I was excited to try the frog legs, which were absolutely fantastic. We took advantage of the happy hour and got the shrimp po'boy sliders and, most importantly, some incredibly affordable oysters. We ordered two dozen oysters in total, sampling both warm and cold ocean varieties. Everything was delicious, and it was a perfect birthday celebration.
Great restaurant with the most iconic table (the elevator). Very accommodating and empathetic waiter. Although the restaurant was fully packed we had all the time to choose and to ask about the different dishes. While we were enjoying our aperitif the waiter showed us the catch of the day. We chose of course the delicious frog legs as a starter. As main course soft crab, sea-bass and a great steak from Gibsons steakhouse next door (I suppose they share the kitchen). Unforgettable evening!
As a person who cooks frogs legs at home, I’m extremely picky with stuff like that and this place got it right! Plus the atmosphere and attention to detail. I also ordered Aperol Spritz and they made it very American way, so I asked to fix it and make it right, guess what? They did! Looking forward to come back again!
Flavourful food at a remarkable customer service restaurant. Every dish that we finished, the waiters were quick to clear the table and clean it for us. True top notch service. I had the Chilean Sea Bass and the frog legs. It is true as Frog Legs taste like chicken. Delicious meal at a fine restaurant.
The best happy hour deal in town. My girlfriends and I had a blast and we ate and drank with all the amazing deals half price wine, oysters, $5 tacos and poboys. The energy is pulsating and service was excellent!!! Gold coast’s finest! @chicagopescetarian
Celebrated a birthday here and it was an enjoyable experience. I had the crab cakes for an appetizer, a tomato based fish soup, white fish, mash potatoes and a few roasted veggies. Pros: indoor and outdoor seating. Very pleasant and attentive servers and hosts. The soho was amazing. My friend ordered the clam chowder and that was good as well. Mash potatoes very good. Large shareable portions and the strawberry shortcake (seasonal) was incredibly delicious. Cons: while the fish was good, I think I would have enjoyed it more if it came with a nice butter sauce. I also wish they would list their macros. I try to monitor my caloric intake but couldn’t find that info. Overall, I’d highly rank HFB as one of my top Chicago eateries. It is in the pricier side but worth the splurge. Oh, and they even gave me a b-day card. What a way to make customers feel special!!!
When you try and get into a packed Saturday night at Gibson's, they serve Gibson's menu at Hugo's!! Hovering the bar for just a few minutes, we landed a table near the piano. The busy crowd vibe was cool as the piano player jammed classics the entire time. Everyone enjoying cocktails & conversation! The tough part this time was the server had a hard time hearing our order and we ended up with an overcooked steak. Not bad, it's Gibson's after all, but medium-well which we is like murder to a great steak. Great date night in the Windy City though!
Loud, boisterous (bar area) and very much alive. Pianist in the bar. Outstanding bar service and the Chilean Sea Bass was perfect. Don't forget the chowder....wow is it good. Friendly and old school bar service. One of my favorites in Chicago.
We capped off our night with dessert! One dessert can serve at least four people! Absolute decadence! Be sure to make a reservation.
Amazing dinner!! We walked in Friday night with no reservations and were able to be seated immediately in the bar area by the live pianist- best seat in the house! We ordered the frog legs, calamari, burger, steak frites, and fish and chips. The beers are all canned (no draft) but my cosmo was delicious. The butter sauce with the frog legs was impeccable and the calamari was delicious as well. Amazing vibes and delicious food! Definitely recommend coming here, especially to listen to the piano! They have a great happy hour too!
Hugo’s is a standout restaurant in Chicago! The food is consistently excellent, with fresh, flavorful dishes that never disappoint. The prices are very reasonable for the quality, making it a great choice for any occasion. What truly sets Hugo’s apart is the exceptional service. The staff is attentive and thoughtful—they even remembered I had found a bone in my fish on a previous visit and took extra care to ensure everything was perfect this time. Hugo’s goes above and beyond to make every dining experience memorable. I’ll keep coming back and highly recommend it to anyone looking for amazing food and top-notch service!
Great happy hour 3-6pm in the city. We went twice-sat at the bar the 1st time & then sat at a table in the bar area. James was our bartender & Ellie was our server & both were very attentive. 1/2 priced oysters (4 selections including Blue Points from Long Island which were incorrectly identified as coming from CT), 1/2 priced wines by the bottle & $5 snacks. The place gets very busy for a weekday so go early.
Good: frog legs & oysters. Great: crab cakes & shrimp cocktail. Exceptional: Chilean sea bass
Spent the weekend in the Gold Coast, every bar and restaurant has been packed and incredibly loud. Snagged a reservation at Hugo's for dinner. The restaurant is huge, they sat us at a nice table in the back dining room that they open on weekends. Raul was our waiter and frankly, our entertainment for the evening. He was funny and helpful with the menu and made sure everything in our evening was perfect. Kudos also go out to Juan, Adam and Ruben who all helped make our meal an awesome experience. Cocktails were very tasty, my wife especially liked the Pear Blossom cocktail. As for food, everything was excellent from the bread to the shrimp appetizer and finally the lobster Cobb salad and walleye fish. Delicious and all very generous portions. So generous we had to take dessert to go, the key lime pie slice is gigantic.
fabulous atmosphere that was enhanced with flawless service from Denice. Delightful delicious decadence from the calamari to the crab cakes. The light but penetrating flavor in the red snapper was perfect. The fish stew was satisfying.
I’m a big fan of Hugo's Frog Bar & Fish House. The spit roasted half chicken is excellent and perfect for sharing. The burger and fries are consistently great, and the crab cake appetizer is easily enough for one person. I also always appreciate a place that offers a classic baked potato. It is a small thing that goes a long way. We recently stopped in just for drinks, and Keith, the bartender, was excellent. He was friendly, attentive, and made the experience even better. I will definitely keep coming back. The food and service are always solid, and the location is very convenient since I live nearby.
I visited this restaurant recently. As an appetizer, since I wasn’t entirely sure about the frog legs, I decided to also order something I’ve had before and know I enjoy — escargots. For the main course, I chose the soft-shell crab. The place itself is really nice — great atmosphere, and the staff was pleasant as well. However, they misunderstood my appetizer order, and if I hadn’t mentioned it again, they probably wouldn’t have brought it at all. I still don’t understand how they managed to miss both — the frog legs and the escargots. Taste-wise, the frog legs were excellent, the escargots about a 3/5 (hard to reach a 5 unless they’re done bourguignonne style), and the crab that followed was very good. Overall, it was a mostly positive dining experience.
Overall, it was a great experience and the food was fine. However, I am not a fan of the practice where staff remove plates as soon as one dish is finished while the entire table still eating other plates. It feels a bit rushed and can be distracting during the meal. I think it would be better if they waited until everyone at the table was fully finished before clearing.
had a very disappointing experience at this restaurant. The steak and lobster were extremely poorly prepared. The meat was stuck to the bone, had a bad texture, and tasted like it was not fresh. It was honestly concerning. After I got home, I ended up vomiting everything I ate, which made the experience even worse and very upsetting. For a place that claims to specialize in steak and lobster, the quality was completely unacceptable. The food did not seem properly handled or cooked, and it felt unsafe to eat. This restaurant is absolutely not worth the money or the risk. I would not recommend it to anyone.
