Great old haunt in Culver City. Lots of cool history and a great atmosphere. Steak and drinks were what I expected for the price. Dark as a dungeon with a lot of class. Definitely a must go if you're craving an old Hollywood vibe.

Incredible food and staff. A wonderful experience. The patio was quiet even when full on a Saturday. Some people may expect a "fancier atmosphere" (newer tables or a fresh coat of paint) but for me, this place puts the time and effort into the things that matter.

What a fun night! Great service and yummy food. Definitely an old school charm. Recommended when you're in the mood for steak and a little Sinatra. The only dish that was a little disappointing, but not bad: the Caesar Salad. It is made tableside, but isn't anything special. The steaks were well cut and perfectly prepared. The truffle Mac was solid. Overall a great experience!

Great and attentive service. The food was delicious. My favorite was the creamed corn and the onion soup. The filet was cooked perfectly.

Used to live in LA but have since moved back to FL. Just came back to visit and my best friend out here took me here for a surprise because I’ve been wanting to try it. Well I wasn’t disappointed. Old school vibes, old school service and old school quality. Everything was awesome. I know it’s a weird one for a steakhouse but try the pigs in a blanket made with Wagyu beef. And the Caesar salad is made table side fresh. Outstanding. Sooooo good. I could eat at this place every night. If you have a chance, get in there!

My first time there will not be my last. It was FABULOUS ! Great all around 5 star 5 diamond ! I have to say that the Oysters Rockefeller, Lobster Thermador, the Peanut butter bar, and my smoked cherry old fashion, and the Service ! Off The Planet ! Thank Y'all for a Great Experience

The food is wonderful and the service is quite good. The portions are large. I had a New York steak that was 16 Oz, all meat, no bone. It was cooked exactly as I asked. The restaurant is small so you will need a reservation. This is an expensive place. If you can eat here for $100 a person, you aren't ordering sides or alcohol. We spent $700 for the four of us, and we brought our own wine. Worth it, if you can afford it.

Had the rib eye and it was excellent. My sister had the sand dabs and loved it. Neat to sit outside, it was very comfortable.

Dine at a set dinner menu for Christmas Eve. Service was excellent. Server took time to interact and seemed happy to be working and helping us. They were doing the same for other tables. Food was prepared very well and was plentiful. Outside settings don't portray the comfortable intimate setting inside. A lovely dinner experience. Corkage fee was high.

Came here for our 4 year anniversary. We had the caesar salad (made tableside), the French onion soup, the sand dabs, and the chicken parm. Everything was exquisite; the highlights for me were the French onion soup and the sand dabs (also my partner’s favorite). The only con was that it was very loud in there and my partner and I had a hard time hearing each other and the waiter. Worth it for those sand dabs though.

We just left Dear John’s. My first time dining there. We had the Dine LA special for 65 a person. The quality was definitely worth the price. The chef put a lot of thought into the flavor for the entrees. The desserts were also amazing. Will definitely return.

Originally opened in 1962, Dear John’s has served many locals and out of towners over the decades. It was closed for a number of years, and recently re-opened by two restaurateurs, and they did a great job of maintaining how it looked, for the most part, back in the 60s or early 70s. It’s very dark on the inside, like an East Coast style steakhouse. They have a large full bar as well. As mentioned in some of the other reviews parking is very limited. There’s about 10 spaces in the small parking lot attached to the side, otherwise it will be street parking, however, a parking pass is needed to park in the neighborhood next to it. They have a lot of great options on the menu, some retro ones as well. We started off with the French Onion Soup and the Steak Tartare. They make the Steak Tartare right in front of you, and it was truly delicious. The Onion Soup was a bit salty, but still very good with tons of cheese and thick bread. For our entrées we chose the Chicken Parmesan and the Sandabs. The Sandabs were the real highlight of the two, but the chicken was also good. It was filled with cheese, like Chicken Cordon Bleu, and then served with a side of marinara. Dan Tana’s is still the best Chicken Parmesan in Los Angeles, but this one is very good as well. Overall a delicious meal in a very classic setting. I know Frank Sinatra himself used to eat and entertain here and it really continues that black and white era style. I would certainly suggest to any local or anyone visiting Los Angeles.

A true "old school" steak house. We sat at the large, wooden, carved bar and were served excellent, hand mixed cocktails. The bartenders were just chatty enough, telling us about the history of the place and giving suggestions. The steak was excellent, the salads were huge, and surprisingly good Mac n Cheese.

Great atmosphere with the lighting and music. Service was amazing, and lots of classic dishes with a light touch.

A great high end meal. There wasn’t a single lack luster dish or drink served. The midnight margarita (pictured) was beautiful and tasty. The bougie tots were delicious and well worth the order. The entire table was raving about them. I got the salmon and it was impeccable. Not a single person left disappointed.

Dear John’s is one of those rare Westside institutions that actually lives up to its reputation. Classic without feeling dated, moody without trying too hard, this place understands exactly what it is. In my opinion, they serve some of the best steak on the Westside: perfectly cooked, deeply flavorful, and unapologetically old-school. Pair that with their top-tier cocktails, strong, balanced, and made the right way, and you’re reminded why places like this endure. The atmosphere is half the experience. Dim lighting, leather booths, and that unmistakable sense that generations of good nights have happened here. It’s a spot for real conversations, celebrations, and long dinners that aren’t rushed. If you want trendy, look elsewhere. If you want iconic, dependable excellence, steak, drinks, and vibe done right, Dear John’s is still it.

Delicious food and great service. Definitely recommend experiencing the Caesar Salad as they prepare it in front of you! The steak was cooked to perfection and the sides were tasty. The ambiance was like an old jazz club and I enjoyed the cocktail (Old Hemingway) and the red wine that was recommended.

Wr had dinner with some friends at the bar. Our bartender was Elena and she was fantastic from the moment we sat down. I hadn't been to Dear John's in 20 years but had heard that it had been through an upgrade. No kidding. The place retains it's dim-lit feel, but everything is in good shape. The service was excellent and the food was just amazing. I had lamb chops, a special that day, and they were perfect. We had a Caesar salad and it was also great, made at the table side. One note, it is best to approach going east on Culver Boulevard so you can drop your car at the valet.

This was our second time eating here and it was just as great as the first. Sure the restaurant is very dark and fairly loud, but that isn't so unusual in today's fine dining. It was also a little cold for our taste. We ordered the ribeye with paris butter and the chicken Parmesan which is served chicken Kiev style with the sauce and the cheese stuffed inside a chicken breast. The steak had a nice crust on it and everything was perfectly cooked. For appetizers we had the French onion soup and shaved asparagus salad. The French onion soup came out piping hot just as I like it. My only complaint was the steak fries we got as a side were not wide enough for steak fries, they were more like regular fries. And considering they are supposed to be double fried, they weren’t quite crispy enough. Hank was our waiter and he was extremely friendly and gave us a great suggestion to dip the fries in the house steak sauce. Thanks Hank and next time we will order dessert first so we aren't too full to enjoy it.

The food is phenomenal. Best center-cut grilled pork chop I have ever had. Service is amazing, too. And you can’t beat the 1962 Dear John’s vibe and history. So glad this classic place was saved from Covid shutdown fate.

It’s a tough review. I wanted to go to Dear Johns for a long time. I love these old Hollywood style joints with red leather booths— but how do you go and not compare it to Dan Tana’s or Craig’s and when you do, how does it ever make sense? Yes, the steaks were great. Yes the sides were great. And we drink some good wine. But the joints that I mentioned above just simply do it better for the same price— or just a bit more! My biggest complaint with restaurants like this— and I would put Taylor’s Steakhouse in the same category, is that they don’t hire professional waiters! They don’t employ an absolute top notch Maitre D that understands that clients are paying for more than just good food. It’s imperative to have an employee that understands the true value of a diner willing to spend $200 per person and how to make them feel special as a result — Pro knows ! And a pro knows how to make each client feel like a celebrity or an insider — considering that’s part of the experience Dan Tana’s, Craig’s and The Polo Lounge—among select others understand this where others don’t! And that’s always disappointing and that’s always something missing from restaurants like this. To give you some specific examples, the maître D was a 20-something rather shy female who did her best to explain that we would have to wait because our table wasn’t ready and then offered us what she called the owners table at the end of the bar (a hightop) but when I asked to see it, she seen Brother try to take him into the restaurant and show it to me— so we simply walk to the table ourselves and sat down— it wasn’t the Booth experience, but it was actually a great table that overlooked the whole restaurant so we decided to sit. One issue was that a portable piano had been sat right next to this table and the table needed to be pulled out ever so slightly and turned so the two men could sit comfortably without their back to the restaurant. When we did that, the “Manager“ quickly showed up, push the table back where it was and turned it back 5° to make it awkward— and was rather adamant and repeatedly telling us “gentlemen the table cannot be moved!” You have to laugh because that’s so ludicrous to treat us like work children in the cafeteria rather than Guys about to shell out over $400 for dinner! When I tried to explain that the piano was in the way— he responded curtly, telling us “you’re welcome to wait for another table.” Honestly we had to laugh. Soon after ordering with the waiter who sort of showed up from nowhere asking if we were ready to order without introducing himself as our waiter or giving us any sense of comfort, could offer no advice as far as work basically responding with things like, “ it depends on what you like.” we asked the spinach or the corn could be made with oil and sautéed rather than cream and there was just a blanket “no.” That pretty much sums it up good food and terrible service in a beautiful setting. That’s not respected by the owners or the manager— not surprising as there’s no respect for the clients. This restaurant would benefit so much by simply hiring professional leaders and a solid maitre D and understanding that if people are going to drive to Culver City instead of Hollywood, West Hollywood Beverly Hills— you better be prepared to give him something extra and a reason to come back. I won’t be back. But let me tell you they make a mean Caesar salad.

This place has a great old school vibe. I had a NY steak which I didn't love. It had some fat and grissle on it and not a huge amount of flavor. I'm comparing to mastro's and other steak restaurants.

Dear John’s used to be my favorite restaurant in all of LA. It’s where I loved taking people and sitting and eating at the bar. The food is absolutely excellent and the steak and drinks are amazing. That being said yesterday when I sat at the bar at dinner I had a bartender/ server that left a really bad experience with me and has in the past. He has served me in the past and always without fail will tell me I’m ordering too many sides. He says this in such a condescending way and will ask if we plan on taking leftovers home and says I should just choose 2 sides. it’s really annoying that he says it in such a way as if he knows we should order less. I would have appreciated it if he would’ve said it in a more professional way or mentioned the size of the container but he says it in a way of like “that’s enough sides for you”. In addition this last time the server spoke and pointed and was talking really unprofessionally about my partner and I. He didn’t realize I too spoke Spanish and could completely understand that he was talking about me and my partner right in front of us! While he was making our drinks! My partner does not speak Spanish but they were feeling uncomfortable because they could see the bartender and another server pointing at us and talking about us. I definitely heard and understood exactly what he said and it was appalling that he could think it was fine to say any of this especially because he spoke Spanish and assumed I didn’t. I did say something to him right after we paid the bill in Spanish and both my partner and I saw the total shock in his face. He asked if I spoke Spanish or was just practicing and I just stated that I was Mexican and I left after that. I’m not feeling great about returning but I may just have to make sure I get a different server next time.

Decent food at decent prices for a birthday dinner. 3 of us shared the ribeye steak, fish main, wedge salad, French onion soup and garlic bread. French onion soup and fish main were the stand outs for me. Service was on point and it's your classic steakhouse environment with dimly lit surroundings.

The food was good. My steak could have used more salt. But the steaks were good, the mash potatoes were good and the garlic bread was tasty. My French onion soup was good but I've had better. The daiquiri with grapefruit was meh. The vesper was better. Now the table side Caesar salad for $28. I liked the flavor but my girl said it was too acidic. But here's my gripe the waiter half heartedly said I can't make the salad table side cause there's no room (there was if he actually tried) but here's my point if I'm paying $28 dollars for table side presentation and you make the salad out of our view then you need to knock 10 dollars of that joke of a price. Pretty pathetic of Dear John's. I booked this place for our third anniversary. No desert on the house and zero mention of it from the staff. Which leads me to half hearted service. Our main waiter was awkward. A lady tried to take the last of the Cesar salad away. I had to tell her 3 times not to take it. I asked the main waiter for an extra napkin and he never brought it so I had to ask someone else. Food is good. Service is way off. Drinks are ok but not for $18 a pop. I wouldn't come back.

Expected a lot, paid a lot, food was good, would not recommend. Inside is definitely going for speakeasy “old LA”. Atmosphere: I’ll paint you a picture. Vintage western doors in the restroom with vintage plumbing fixtures, and an antique mirror. I totally dig it. Candle-lit and dark, little musky all okay. But then… there’s this giant industrial, motion-activated paper towel dispenser (which was malfunctioning) and an equally off-putting similar soap dispenser. Why not cohesion? What about the aesthetic? What before could’ve been charming, instead comes off as careless.

I was there with my mom and sister we sat in side it was very dark inside not a fan of eating in the dark .Secondly the food it self was good but I would have liked a lot more garlic in my ceaser salad not Tabasco as I have had before in many salads. No tea on the menue that surprised me a bit but they do serve coffee.I had the Rib steak done med but came med rare.my sister had the salmon was very tasty a small portion but tasty and mashed potoes and spinach and mushrooms My mom had a steak hers was med rare to me a bit too much salt on the two steaks.overall food was good just not my kind of steak house sorry Glenn.

Giving this place three stars for phone service, free parking and a very patient and very knowledgable server, Elizabeth and trying to be forgiving in the current pandemic. The Rockenwagner and Citron chef names now behind the place, and why we were so excited to try, have impeccable records in their own dining rooms that afforded lifetime memory meals. Maybe the bar alone is the way to go. The cocktails (average $15) are fine. . The food is mediocre and outrageously priced. A $28 caesar salad for two with lank tiny croutons and lettuce (before tax/gratuity) lists a table side "performance"that would make Lawry's Prime Rib waitresses choke. And it isn't that the exec chef there is not aware. When the steak tartare ($26) that had a gummy texture to it was sent back to the kitchen he said it "tasted fine to him." (uneaten it was taken off the check) It seems as though Frank Sinatra has dined at more and more places in LA and who knows, maybe this was close to MGM. But at others, such as Marino, Matteo, Matteo's, La Dolce Vita, La Scala etc. the food is more the quality you would expect.

I dined at DJ last Friday night. Its a restaurant that I've been wanting to try for a very long time. I'm rating it 3 starts because of the cocktail served to us - Ordered an old fashioned and I'm pretty disappointed to say it unfortunately was probably the worst old-fashioned thats ever been served to me- the drink was bitter and not balanced and since we ordered two and both tasted like that it was def not a one off incident. I didn't order another drink after. Unfortunately, that did kick us off on the wrong foot; but the food was good; pics of my order attached. Providing this feedback less as a complaint but more as a MUST have area of improvement for a restaurant like this - its def a deterrent for me to come back and due to this experience I've moved a reservation for 4 that I had here to a different restaurant.

Cancellation policy is a bit rigged, you're not able to cancel online and they obviously don't answer when they're closed on Sunday and Monday. I called multiple times Tuesday to cancel my Wednesday reservation and when someone was finally in to answer my call they told me that I should have tried leaving a message to avoid the $25/person fee and there was nothing they could do. Definitely should be some flexibility here, at least have the option to cancel online.

It is actually harder that you would think to combine high prices, mediocre food, and bad service...But Dear John's does it. It could be that my expectations are out of whack given where I have eaten lately, but I was really looking forward to eating here and then really disappointed. Overall, it was just mediocre and took forever....so long that someone in our party had to leave before the entree came out. The kitchen was unapologetic and unwilling to offer even a free desert. There are so many great places to eat where they appreciate your business and have good food. Just go there.

Although the food was above average, considering the price the experience is absolutely not worth it. We sat outside and immediately regretted it. There is clearly little thought put into the outside area and considering that the place is mostly known for its atmosphere inside, sitting outside it utterly pointless and disappointing. The service is slow and disjointed and we were definitely forgotten about a few times. The table side Caesar salad was very mediocre and it looked like the waiter didn’t bring out enough ingredients but just made it anyway (plus it’s just an anchovy paste, which removes all the fun of seeing it prepared by the table). The stall in the men’s room is literally so small that I could barely fit. My knees were touching the door. Basically, unless you want the dark inside vibe and are willing to pay top dollar for the old school reputation minus the quality, go elsewhere.

Worst dining experience. After 5 years, mgr. Angel told me he can No Longer reserve seats at corner of the bar. Bartender tells us AC is broken. Sweltering inside the restaurant on a Saturday night. When we asked Angel about AC he tells us it is on and working. Lied right to our face. We asked about the specials and are told our favorite Rack of Lamb is on the menu. Naturally we ordered it. 10 minutes later, we are told Rack of Lamb is Sold Out at 6:30 pm We will Never go back The manager Angel could Not care less. Shameful ! Fire Angel….. Bring Back Hank !!!

I am extremely disappointed with the service at Dear John’s. My friends and I were excited to visit for the first time, especially since I had spent time studying the menu and saving up for this special night. The restaurant’s prices are on the higher side, and I wanted to treat my friends to a memorable experience. However, the service was far from what we expected. Upon arrival, we were not greeted by the waiter, and when he finally approached our table, he immediately started with rude remarks. His attitude remained disrespectful throughout the evening, making us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. I was honestly embarrassed that I had chosen this place for a special night out. It’s unfortunate that the poor service completely overshadowed what could have been an enjoyable experience. The waiter’s behavior single-handedly ruined the entire evening.

I have been dining here since they opened , very sad to write this bad review.Quality of the food plummeted, service is non existent, half the food we ordered never came , drinks were less than adequate. Since the restaurant is on Instagram everything slowly went down hill . Ordered the wedge salad , couldn’t find the bacon or blue cheese had to order a side of each. Pigs in a blanket were BURNT , sad to say AVOID this place spend your yr money where they care about their customers
