Coming from someone that grew up in the deep south, this is the best southern food I’ve had in Los Angeles. The cornbread is buttery perfection. The catfish bites took me back to eating catfish along the Tennessee River. The short rib melts in your mouth. And the banana pudding took me back to grandma’s house. It’s the small things here too! A perfect Old Fashion that lets the bourbon speak and isn’t overpowered by bitters. And the assorted plates and doilies are a subtle but necessary touch for the impeccable southern vibes. I highly highly recommend this spot. I know we will be back.

Southern recipes, California fusion in Tapas style serving. I’m not a cornbread fan but this cornbread was the best one ever! Every dish was delicious. Service top notch and the seating area was perfect. If you are in LA, you should definitely try this restaurant. Highly recommended!

David J was our server and he was amazing. I appreciated how he ensured our first experience was the best it could be by explaining the family style vibe, allowed us to think about what we wanted and after we ordered he made suggestions to help us fill in areas he thought we would like. His recommendations of the fried green tomatoes was extremely appreciated as that was not on our original list and I feel like our experience would have been sorely disappointing had we skipped out. I will gladly recommend this location again to friends as well as hope to return in the future!

I’ve been hearing great things about Hatchet Hall in Culver City, and since the Amex Platinum comes with a Resy credit, I really had no reason to delay the visit any longer. It was fairly easy to find an opening on a Sunday night. They offer valet, or you can find street parking nearby, just be sure to read the signs carefully as many streets require a permit. Once we arrived, we were greeted by the host and seated in the fancy courtyard. This is definitely a place to take a date; the vibe is perfect with dim lighting, candles on every table, and lots of plants. The semi-enclosed outdoor seating is a nice touch. Just like everyone says, the waiter highly recommended the cast iron cornbread. I’m going to be honest: I wasn't a huge fan. It was a bit too sweet and oily for my liking. I’m glad I tried it to see what the hype was about, but I probably wouldn't recommend it. However, the main courses really impressed us. The Elk Loin was tender and flavorful, and the brown bacon bits & fig went perfectly with the dish. It was a wonderfully plated and tasty course. The Branzino was another standout, cooked to perfection with a hint of fire, tender, and juicy. It's probably the best grilled Branzino I’ve ever had. Usually, when the first dish disappoints, I don't expect the rest of the meal to be exceptional. But this is the rare occasion where I still highly recommend the place even though it started off not so impressive. Overall, a 4.5 out of 5. Will definitely come back to try other dishes.

We started with the Caesar salad, which was great and super light. The star of the show was the cornbread! absolutely incredible, it comes with a mound of butter on top that just melts right in, and we honestly wanted to order another one. It’s that good. We also had really delicious dates, scallops, and literally the best roast chicken ever. It was so juicy and so good. Totally recommend

Went to the Old Man Bar which is at the end of Hatchet Hall so this is a review for that and not Hatchet Hall itself. The Old Man bar has a very cool vibe. On Sunday and Mondays, they only serve cheeseburgers but their cheeseburgers are really good. They have a ton of whiskeys so if that's your thing, you will not be disappointed. Good prices and very, very friendly staff. My only complaint was that the background music seemed excessively loud.

Great date night spot for dinner! Very nice ambiance. Definitely plan ahead and make a reservation. For 2 people we ordered their seasonal salad, ricotta toast appetizer, short rib entree, and a side of brussel sprouts. It was more than enough. We took home leftovers. I’d recommend ditching the sprouts and opting for a desert. The entree was much larger than expected and perfect for sharing. Staff was friendly and came around often to check on us so beverages were never empty. Great spot with yummy food!

Hatchet Hall is a Southern-inspired restaurant with a California twist. The indoor dining room and bar were buzzing with energy, filled with young people enjoying their meals. We sat at the outdoor garden area, which was beautifully decorated and offered a much quieter atmosphere. For dinner, we started with the Cast Iron Cornbread—highly recommended by my niece—and it truly was the best cornbread we’ve ever had. We also shared a Caesar salad, baked oysters, Cajun fried catfish bites, meatloaf with mashed potatoes, apple brandy short ribs, and broccolini. Every dish was flavorful and perfectly prepared. Overall, everything exceeded our expectations, and we can’t wait to return.

Had dinner here last night and the ambiance was absolutely splendid. Although we arrived late for our reservation and close to closing time, we never felt rushed. Our server was fabulous, and I wish I had gotten his name. We ordered the Cornbread, Grilled Oysters, Pork Chop, Elk Loin, Carrots, and Mushrooms. The cornbread was the best I’ve ever had, perfectly textured with a crisp crust, and the compote butter truly knocked it out of the park. The grilled oysters were fresh with a tomato based sauce; not bad, but they could’ve used a bit more cheese and grill time. The pork chop was excellent, crispy on the outside and juicy inside. The elk loin was cooked perfectly and paired beautifully with the apricot bacon compote. The atmosphere inside is dark, romantic, and reminiscent of a Marie Antoinette-era aesthetic, while the patio is beautifully lit and inviting. Definitely recommend!!

Wow! Incredible food. It’s served like a family setting where one orders something different and everyone shares the selection. Their cornbread is the best I ever had. We had about 8 people for dinner, so it became an 8 meal course. The bill was sound $800 with the 20% tip. The atmosphere was amazing and the service was outstanding. If you going to LA, I recommend you go there for lunch or dinner. Plus, they have valet parking which is nice, especially because parking if hard to find in LA. The valet cost $19…well worth the price!

This place is genuine, and with the most relaxing vibe. The approach is to give you an experience that you and whomever you dine with you won't forget. Food is encouraged to share, made to order with fresh ingredients. Its family owned. Just to start they offer either fresh or sparkling water. The food and presentation was top-notch. Highly recommend it, especially if you want a unique, soul warming Los Angeles dining experience. Just, take a glance at their menu online, they make a cornbread appetizer that I guarantee will be enough to come and at least try that and have a specialty drink to pair. Cozy lounge areas, romantic lighting inside and outside. The dress code was casual, and there were kids there as well.

Love the venue (covered patio, pebbled garden, long bar area), the diversity of the menu (from porterhouse to elk to crab hushpuppies to fried green tomatoes to trumpet mushrooms), the house favorite cornbread, the perfect cocktails (tried jayhawker and old fashioned), the bar selection (for peaty scotch fans, they have port charlotte and I spotted a bottle of Octomore), solid dessert (blueberry tart stood out), and solid service. Wonderful experience overall Items that were ok but less impressive: potato rolls, porterhouse (pork chop and elk were better), gnocchi. Strawberry salad is more berries with leaves than salad but very good nonetheless.

I've been wanting to try this place for a few years now. Good but expensive for non-downtown Culver City location. Summary: THE CORNBREAD! The rest of the menu is good, very good. The branzino was amazing but costly. There is a lot competition for the $50-$100 per person space: Hatchet Hall has nice bar area, a beautiful, cozy private room, a nice casual outdoor dining area. A unique dining space. Hatchet Hall is cool & casual place with fine dining meals and prices. But I would go back for the cornbread and try a few other dishes. Again, everything was good.

The vibe here is amazing!! loved the atmosphere and the bar area was a great place to hang out while waiting for our table. All the staff were super friendly and welcoming, which made the experience feel really good overall. That said, the food didn't quite live up to the hype for me. The buns were overly salty and reminded me of store bought sesame burger buns, and overall the flavors just didn't hit. But to be fair, the place was packed, so I get that it's hard to keep food quality super high at that pace. I'd definitely come back for drinks and the vibe, just not necessarily for the food.

Had dinner last night - I would call it a very good restaurant but not excellent. Started with lazy river drink which was excellent and the corn bread was very different and a highlight. The hamachi civiche was tasty and a little spicy. The pear salad was average and gnocchi loaded back potato was average . Some at our table loved the fried green tomatoes while others felt it was average. I had the elk and as others have said - not gamy. I thought it was cooked perfectly but lacked much flavor. Lastly the carrots were oil at best. Our server was attentive but did not offer many suggestions. Like others - I found it interesting that the chef requires/recommends that your entire order be placed at one time. While it really didn’t bother me one way or another it can come off somewhat pretentious. Parking was also a challenge. PS On a lighter note - one reviewer mentioned only one bathroom - not to worry, there are two.

So it seems this place is seasonal in terms of food so I am unsure what’s something that stays on the menu. I got the turkey meatloaf, fries and deviled eggs. My friend got the loaded baked potato gnocchi (not pictured) and the broccolini. I will say I heard this place was really good so maybe this just wasn’t the best season to go, but the food was good but not overall memorable. Meatloaf was tender and moist and I enjoyed the tangy sauce but it wasn’t a wow factor to it. I would say the star was surprisingly the broccolini. It was amazingly flavorful. I really enjoyed it. The deviled eggs were really good too. Nice little kick to them. The gnocchi, though cooked well, didn’t really evoke a loaded baked potato. I would have been good to have some sort or acid or something with it, as it’s really rich as well. Overall it was good! Not great but solid. I am unsure if I would return unless I saw maybe something different on the menu I’d want to try. I’ll def keep track of their menu to see. A nice date night spot because the restaurant was very cute.

We visited Hatchet Hall to celebrate a birthday, and as a group of six friends who regularly dine at some of the best restaurants in Los Angeles, our expectations were reasonably high. Unfortunately, the experience ended up being mixed, which is why we're giving it three out of five stars. Despite having a reservation and requesting indoor seating where the ambiance was notably better we were seated outside instead. That misstep set the tone for the evening. On the positive side, the cornbread was good and stood out as the highlight of the meal (its just a bread). However, several of our dishes arrived cold and had to be sent back to be reheated, creating unexpected delays. The roasted chicken was also undercooked, which was especially disappointing for a restaurant of this caliber. Service throughout the night was mediocre and didn't help elevate the overall experience. In the end, our expectations simply weren't met. While there were a few bright spots, the inconsistency in food quality and lapses in service made it difficult to rate Hatchet Hall any higher than three stars.

We came for a birthday dinner and were told the kitchen would “course everything out,” but the pacing felt rushed. They required us to order everything at once, but our entrées came immediately after apps were cleared. The entire meal was under 90 minutes for a $400 dinner for three. Food was good, but if you’re expecting a relaxed fine-dining pace, this may not be the experience. I really enjoyed the food itself, but felt pretty disappointed that our meal didn’t really feel like a special event here.

Cute branding, great atmosphere, and the energy was correct. The food was ALMOST amazing. There were a few tweaks that could make it incredible. Ultimately the balancing in each dish was off. Definitely get the corn bread, but be prepared for the sweetness, as It is essentially a cake - I’d opt for that after your meal. Short rib was amazing and tender and flavorful, but the pungent horse radish crème fraîche was offensive on the pallet with such a nice balance everywhere else (and I like horse radish). The beets are cut in large cubes and dusted with a pistachio pesto and bread crumbs, leaving the texture sandy, mixed with a large earthy-flavored beet, makes it feel like you’re eating God’s green earth, not in a good way. The persimmons were a delight. I think they need to be cut up more, more goat cheese and arugula for a really balanced bite. Once again, all of it was good, was just really hoping for it to be great.

My daughter made a 5:30 PM reservation two weeks in advance for her birthday dinner. It was planned ahead of time and meant to be a special evening. When we arrived, we were seated outside in a tent on a cold, windy Los Angeles night — right by the entrance where the door flap was blowing open in the wind. It was genuinely uncomfortable. We politely asked if we could wait for an indoor table instead. The answer was simply no. There was no effort to offer alternatives, no acknowledgment that this was a birthday celebration, and no sense of hospitality. We understand restaurants get busy and that seating requests cannot always be guaranteed. What was disappointing was not the logistics — it was the lack of warmth and consideration. We ultimately chose to leave. Thankfully, Tomat in Westchester welcomed us warmly and turned the evening into one of the best birthday dinners my daughter has ever had. The difference between service and true hospitality became very clear that night.

I visited Hatchell Hall last Friday to celebrate my boyfriend, and unfortunately the experience was very disappointing. I had been here years ago and remembered the food being absolutely amazing, so I was really excited to share that with him. This time, everything felt far from what I remembered. The greeting at the door was the first red flag. The host only said “hi” with no warmth, no “welcome in,” and not even a simple “do you have a reservation.” When she couldn’t find my name, she didn’t ask if it might be under a different one or try to help at all. It felt very unprofessional for a place of this level. Our waitress also didn’t seem friendly or engaged. I smiled and greeted her, but she didn’t respond the same way. No questions about whether it was our first time, if we were celebrating anything, or even a basic menu explanation. She dropped off the menus and walked away without any interaction. Then came the food, which was the biggest disappointment. I spent close to two hundred dollars including tips and valet, and the quality didn’t match the price. • The corn bread presentation used to be charming, but this time it came on a plain plate with a big ball of butter on top, looking more like something from IHOP. • The ceviche did not taste fresh at all. Both my boyfriend and I noticed the same off taste. • The soup was okay, nothing special. • The shrimp and grits, meatloaf and mash tasted extremely simple, like food you’d get at an average diner rather than a nicer restaurant. In general, the food didn’t taste freshly made. It used to tasted fresh and carefully made, so this was a huge letdown. On top of that, the way the dishes were brought to the table felt unsafe and unprofessional. My boyfriend and I were sitting next to each other, and multiple times the staff reached between us from behind to place the plates. Bringing hot food from behind guests is unsafe and definitely not proper service etiquette. Overall, I left feeling disappointed and honestly embarrassed because I wanted this to be a special night. My boyfriend was sweet and didn’t make a big deal, but he agreed the service was bad and the food was just okay.
