Opinions de Wok of Flame Davis
We're relatively new to Davis and have had many people recommended this restaurant. I'm rather particular about Chinese food (I have some Chinese in me and my grandfather was Chinese/Hawaiian and was an amazing cook). Wok of Flame won me and my boyfriend over for many reasons. We love the fact that they have traditional book style menus, the ambiance is great, the service is excellent and the food is so fresh and flavorful! We shared a plate of potsickers which were a nice size with crispy edges and the dipping sauce was divine. He had a bowl of Hot and Sour soup and I had a bowl of Egg Drop soup. They were both nice and hot and delicious. The only thing that was missing was white pepper, they don't offer it, and I believe that's the first Chinese restaurant I've been to that doesn't offer white pepper which is a staple for adding to soup. The Dynamite Beef was nice and crispy in a great sauce with crunchy veggies...a real delight. The vegetable chow mein was great as well. We both had iced teas (Oolong perhaps) and it was very refreshing. We will definitely be back, since Wok of Flame has now moved into #1 position of Chinese restaurants here in Davis... we'll bring our own white pepper...lol.
Service was great, and the food was really delicious. I had the teriyaki chicken, which came on a bed of noodles with onions. Tasted really fresh. My friend had the cashew chicken, which she says was really good. We also got a large rice to share, which did not come with the main meals; had to order rice separately. All of it came out within 10 minutes of ordering and it was all hot. Will be visiting again!
#1 June 2023 You know how most Chinese restaurants have the same food? Some are super greasy and others seem a bit fresher, but even the really good Americanized Chinese restaurants are never fantastic? I think I found the place they are all emulating, and the chefs at Wok of Flame definitely didn't give away their REAL recipes. I had a dinner combo. They come with soup, an appetizer, and a common side of fried rice, chow mein, etc You know the drill. What you don't know is that even if the dish you want isn't on their list, they will turn any entree in the menu into a meal by just adding a few dollars to the menu price. How great is that?? . So, tonight I ordered BBQ Pork Egg Foo Young and got to make it a combo. Here are my highlights: The Egg Foo Young was perfectly cooked with a fantastic gravy - strong and flavorful - which is why they didn't need to down the eggs in it. The BBQ pork fried rice was excellent. It wasn't overly greasy and the flavor was full but not overpowering. But honestly, it was the homemade sweet and sour sauce that captured my attention. Honestly, I'm not the biggest fan of Sweet and Sour. But this one has me rethinking that. It was naturally sweetened, not cloying, with what I'm guessing was pineapple juice. But it has this added note, a subtle spiced flavor that you can smell and taste. It's familiar but I still can't figure out what it is. I asked the server to ask the kitchen about a special ingredient. She came back and told me that the chefs told her that this sauce, like everything else here, is made with love. Of this, I have no doubt. But I think I'll just ask the next time I visit. Eventually I'll figure out this mystery!! 🧐 ************************************** #2 March 2024 I've returned. This time I went for the Sweet and Sour Pork so I could enjoy that sauce. As expected, it was fantastic. These little crispy deep fried bits of battered pork are FANTASTIC. I got the Singapore Style Noodles and Green Beans in Garlic Sauce to go. I can't wait for leftovers tomorrow.
This place has good food, good service and a good environment. Their lunch special is one of the best places around!
We have been here a lot of time and it’s perfect for soup! Whenever it’s a rainy day and we’re craving soup, we come here for the super tasty soups. The other dishes are great too! Customer service is great and the staff is friendly.
Definitely a 5 star place Food was fantastic the place is impeccably clean a clean and the staff is super friendly they even went out of their way to make me extra gravy. If I lived near this restaurant I would be here every week. Very nice portions and very family friendl
Fast and friendly service. If you’re new to this place then staff recommendations are a good way to start. Food is delicious and authentic taste. We ordered the general chicken (orange chicken) and honey walnut shrimp. Both come with two choices of sides. We chose brown rice, steamed veggies, chow mein and white rice.
Wok of Flame in Davis, CA was an unexpected highlight of our business trip through Fairfield, Sacramento, and Davis, a true hidden gem we only discovered thanks to its inviting highway signage that practically calls out to anyone craving Asian comfort food on the road. Inside, the restaurant delivered everything we hoped for and more, from Pan‑fried dumplings with a crisp golden sear and a perfectly seasoned filling, dipped in soy sauce that brought everything together. Honey walnut shrimp—creamy, sweet, and beautifully plated over shredded lettuce, the kind of dish that disappears faster than you expect. Fried rice loaded with vegetables, egg, and just the right wok‑kissed flavor. Stir‑fried entrées with tender meat, bell peppers, and dried chilies—balanced, aromatic, and deeply satisfying. Egg rolls with a crunchy exterior and a bright, sweet dipping sauce that made them an instant favorite. Soup that warmed us up after a long day on the road. Every dish arrived hot, fresh, and generously portioned, the kind of meal that makes you slow down, share plates, and enjoy the moment. Their selection of beer, wine, and sake added a relaxing touch, and the sports TVs let us unwind while catching up on Winter Olympic events over dinner. Warm, welcoming, and consistently delicious, Wok of Flame is the kind of place that turns a routine business‑trip dinner into a memorable stop, highly recommended for anyone passing through Northern California in search of great Chinese cuisine.
I honestly haven’t been here in 2-3 years and it was just as I expected the food was amazing 10/10 honestly it brought back memories from when I use to live in Davis back in 2020-2021 I will always come back here The sesame shrimp were delicious wee also tried some lemon pepper lunch especial
Mongolia beef and noodles. Carrots, cut cute shapes- noodles phenomenal Super yummy. Also use their bathroom it was clean sink was in there so you could wash up right afterwards had toilet paper. Paper towel towels. It was beautiful good smell.
The hot and sour soup was tasty. The food was fresh and the portions were good. We went during lunch time and were able to get lunch specials for the whole family, which were reasonably priced for the quantity of food you get. The server was friendly. My husband, myself, and 4 kids ranging from 11 years to 6 months all ate and were satisfied. I would recommend this place.
Wok of Flame has the BEST salt and pepper chicken wings in Davis. The seasoning is perfection and the crispy wings are seriously addicting. The chow mein is great (they have a good lunch special) as are so many other dishes. It’s a great place for family dinner/lunch, typically pretty quick to seat you and always great service.

Came here for the first time last night and the food was amazing. Brandon was our server and immediately made us feel like home. So genuine and sweet. We were never left with a glass half empty and we were checked on if our food was good or if we needed anything. The food, the service and the atmosphere are all amazing and I can’t recommend this place enough the next time. We’re in town we will be there!
Best Chinese food I've ever eaten. They use different spices. No MSG, I believe. I don't have a headache. Tasty tasty tasty! I'm 63 and raised next to SF. I know American Chinese food... This was next level
Hands down the best Chinese food in the greater area! The cost to portion sizes are amazing and bests all other restaurants. Best hot and sour soup around. The staff is always friendly and accommodating. Great atmosphere as well.
Food is delicious, service is impeccable, and there’s left overs to take home. A wonderful comfortable place to enjoy with the family.
Have been here too many times to count and continuously great not only the food is amazing but staff as well. Won ton soup is amazing along with multiple meats and all the sides I have tried are amazing . I also love the appetizers so many great things to try here. My favorite place to go in davis
After hearing about Wok of Flame from several different folks in my neighboring town, it became clear we had to check it out! My partner and I came for lunch on a Sunday, and were surprised to see it very busy which we took as a good sign. Brandon politely sat us and made sure we knew he was coming back after he attended to his other tables. He looked to be the only one serving at the moment, and had just been triple sat. It was not long after that, another server came to take our order, and get us drinks. Brandon checked back in with us to make sure we got our order in. He was a genuinely great guy who you can just tell does his job diligently and with a warm professionalism. We were struck by the customer service here, from both Brandon and our female server. She was also great! The food was tasty, not greasy, and they nailed the American Chinese classic: the General’s chicken. We will definitely be back for the service, and to try their signature green beans! Thank you for a lovely lunch experience Brandon & Co.!

Went for an early dinner and the place was pretty empty. Seemed like there were only 2 people working the front and lots of pick up orders, so we ended up waiting about 30 minutes to take our order. But food came out fairly quick, they were attentive of us after that. The one thing that was uncomfortable was the temp, I started sweating just sitting there so hopefully they'll turn up the AC next time. The combo plates were a lot of food, I had enough leftovers for another small meal.
The moo shu weirded me out so much... It comes prewrapped. So it's not cabbage bonanza with wraps, it's all the things already wrapped, four on a plate. Comments: 1. The wraps are square. Yes. We unwrapped them to discover this. 2. Sauce is already in there. I had one that had so much sauce I almost gagged. 3. Pre wrapped means I can't get my Chipotle style bursting at the seams sized wrap. 4. Four. Four wraps. What a weird and superstitious number. 5. The wraps are the super thin good ones. 6. It came with an additional carafe of sauce. I think we got other food. I just can't remember because the wraps messed with my mind.
Tasty Generals and steamed veggies. Hot and sour soup hits the spot. Update: too inconsistent, same dishes often taste miles apart. When they are good; however, they are pretty tasty.

The venue is pretty nice inside, there are some TVs on in the background with cartoons on that make the evening not so quiet. The area we sat had kind of a strange smell and the table had not been cleaned very well. As for the food, the wonton soup and hot and sour soups were very good, I would definitely go back for those. The orange chicken was also very good, all white meat chicken. However, the Szechuan chicken was not good had a strange flavor. Overall, I probably will not be going back, except maybe to get some soup to go.

I ordered honey walnut shrimp and the quality of the shrimp tasted horrible. The vegetables were very soggy and looks old. The sause was very runn and made the taste seem very bad. So far out of this dish the steamed rice was he best. Walnuts kinda look burnt but not black burnt. I dislike the service when I bought the dish. They didn't seem to notice that I was here. After I got the food there was only one particular server who was nice but then again she also pay attention and I had to wait like an extra 4 minutes for them to get my food.
I initially thought the food was good. However, I was disappointed to learn that the staff does not properly know or disclose what is in their dishes. On two separate visits, I specifically asked if the hot and sour soup was vegetarian, and both times I was assured it was, with no meat. On my third visit, a different staff member informed me that the soup is actually made with a chicken base. If the earlier staff members were unsure, they should have verified instead of giving me incorrect information. This kind of inconsistency is concerning, especially for people with dietary restrictions.
Do not eat here if you are celiac (or have other allergies) I’ve been here several times and was always told it’s no problem for celiacs-the server I had a year ago is who told me they can substitute steamed chicken for breading and make fried rice with no soy sauce-perfect right? Today for lunch I ordered like usual and told the server I have celiac so I can’t have any cross contamination-food comes out with fried cream cheese wonton on the plate….. Without even letting them hand me the plate I say-I can’t eat that I have a severe reaction to gluten so it can’t even touch the plate my food is on-they take it back and say they’ll remake it, sorry for the confusion etc In less than 5 minutes they bring the “new” order out….which was already worrisome so I made sure to only take a bite from the very center where it hopefully hadn’t touched anything to test and the “newly fried rice” was stone cold…. They literally removed the wonton, waited a few minutes and gave me back the contaminated food and plate! I even SPECIFICALLY asked if it was remade and told yes! I don’t expect restaurants to always be able to be celiac safe-I’ve been lots of places that say they cant and I just drink tea no big deal-BUT TO LIE AND SERVE SOMEONE FOOD THAT CAN MAKE THEM SICK?! I didn’t cause a scene because I was with my college student children and didn’t want to ruin the vibe-but our lunch for 3 people was $113…… for $113 you can’t remake $3 worth of rice and steamed chicken you’d rather make someone sick? Anyone with dietary restrictions knows this happens too often but it’s always so disappointing when it happens-I ended up just drinking tea anyway only now I worry about the possible effects
