Opinions de Whistle Stop Cafe Decatur
This place is so adorable! Has that perfect small town local business feel. It is literally very small on the inside. We must have hit the timing just right as we were able to get a table after sitting at the counter for a few minutes. The food is like you're at someone's house and they made it for you, super fresh and real. All the staff was so friendly. We can't wait to go back and try breakfast!
The service was excellent and friendly. We served immediately and with a great smile. The food was done efficiently and the taste was very good as well. We were asked throughout our meal if we needed anything else. Kept our glasses filled. In all this is a great place to go and very cozy and cute. We are definitely going back. The prices are very fair for the amount of food you get served.
If you leave here hungry, you did something wrong. Great food, huge portions and efficient friendly service are hallmarks of this local favorite.
Good diner. Lil bit pricey for lunch. Foods is consistently good. We've been there several times.
Little gem in Decatur My gf has lived here for 5 years and never knew this place existed. Like many other places I've been too so far, I kept my expectations low. Boy was I wrong and happy I was wrong, because this is going to be a new spot for our family!
Great hidden gem that has been around for years. Lets keep it a secret and not tell too many people about it.
We stopped here on our way home from Sherman on 06/21/24. Very small cafe, but the food and service were great! My wife and I both had the chicken fried steak. The flavor was awesome, but they were a little on the tough side. Their pies are homemade and very delicious! We will definitely stop again when we go through there again.
Our big regret is that we never knew about this place until we stopped in this last week while on a road trip that we make regularly. The food, the history, and the visit with the owner all made for a great experience. Our burgers, tots, onion rings, sweet tea, and shared slice of homemade chocolate meringue pie - every bite was a delight!!!
The food was amazing! The chicken fried steak was freshly prepared as well as the onion rings and okra. I would definitely stop there again.
Great Cafe, we go here regularly for work If you can get the Cherry pie before it sells out, you'll be in for a treat.
Sausage on the biscuits and gravy was so good. And the meat lover breakfast burrito was jammed packed with bacon, ham, sausage, cheese, egg onion and green peppers - d'lish!!
If you love charming old places to visit And eat, this is for u. The shrimp basket was perfect and the mushroom burger excellent. Wait staff was prompt, friendly and pretty! Cute motor-court in back of cafe is a treasure. So many Motor Courts along old highways have crumbled. Old movies like “It happened one Night” have motor courts in them .
Nice little diner with decent food and lots of history. Cool place to visit.
This is a great little dinner.... it's wait staff is great and fun... the food is great... warning it's not a big place... I have seen it so packed that people will share tables..... That isn't a big deal in my opinion...I have also observed people waiting in their cars for a spot... it's worth it
First visit. Excellent service, and my lunch arrived shortly after ordering. My fried pork chops were some of the best I have ever had! I look forward to returning soon!
Service was great. The food was home style, creamy potatoes. Son had a big juicy hamburger and golden onion rings. The pies looked amazing, but we were to stuffed to eat one. But there were MANY people that were eating the different pies. I would highly recommend everyone to stop and give them a try. You won't be disappointed.
small place, maybe 10 tables. service is efficient, all business. biscuits and sausage gravy were good and hearty. coffee was good too. atmosphere is what you'd expect in an old cafe which is okay with me.
Nostalgic little hometown cafe located in Decatur, Texas. Homemade food and homegrown Texas friendliness. A wonderful experience. Somewhat small inside, and parking can be a challenge as there's limited space but well worth the time and effort.
Great comfort food and fantastic people.
As seen on Texas country reporter, this place lives up to its country hype. They have great food, great pie great service and such a warm country atmosphere. Highly recommended.👍🇨🇱 PS: the chicken fried chicken and coconut cream pie are wonderful!
Foods good service is good price ain't bad. It's actually a cool little place. Tiny little diner mostly only the local people go to has the best pie's the people all talk among tables it's a great place it's historic been there since the 20s I think
Had breakfast. Good food at a good price. Great service and staff. Will be back.
I found the Whistle Stop Cafe right next to The Petrified Wood Gas Station which was my original destination. This station is just what ot sounds like. It was once a pass thru on the Old Meridian Highway of yester years! I am shocked that the station is not listed as a place of interest online. In fact, all I got from the name was a bunch of coordinates with no identification. Towns people were my source for finding this beautiful historical relic. The Whistle Stop Cafe is a cozy little restaurant right next door and had itbeen open on the Sunday I visited Im sure I would have ventured in to try a piece of their mouth watering pie! Behind the station / cafe are some one room hotel rooms which would be even more wonderful once they are restored. I sure hope this Decatur treasure is restored. What a great slice of Americana we will lose if it is overlooked. Needless to say Decatur will lose an integral part of it history. Dont miss this its mind blowing history!
Finally made it! After several attempts, made it by 2. Whistle Stop is only open for breakfast and lunch. We weren't disappointed. It's not fair that Decatur has this place to itself. Located in historic rock building, atmosphere is cozy and laid back. Had chicken fried chicken with salad, homemade mashed potatoes, and okra., wife had pot roast with carrots, potatoes and salad...both terrific. Save room for coconut pie..if you don't like coconut, there are plenty others to choose from.
This place is amazing!! We ate here the day before Thanksgiving and the pies that were pre-ordered wow!! Non stop people picking them up. Tiny place but down home cooking lots of history to this place !! We loved it. Should've saved room for pie. Maybe next visit!!! Highly recommended!!
This place is good homemade food place to eat at! The mashed potatoes are real potatoes mashed....so good! ***Only thing is there is only 12tables at this cafe.**** ***We showed up when it was busy ....we had to wait outside 20min.***** ***The thing i dont like is there is no checkin with waitress to put our name down.*** You have to hope that they dont forget about you. Note....this is a historical location** It is a fun place to visit!
Nice local, family owned place with great service, huge portions, and great food. Will definitely come by again.
What a great place! Everyone knew everyone and it was charming to hear all the conversations about local happenings. The food is just great food, done really well. Oh my goodness the pies!! What ever you order....save room for the pies!! It was a great experience and if given the chance, we will definitely be back!
We've been wanting to try this place and finally we did today. Beautiful historic buildings on the lot. The restaurant itself is very small, but the servers are very quick to clear off a table for new diners that want to sit down. Breakfast is served until 10:30. Me and the wife ordered Chicken Fried Steak. Everything was delicious and homemade. You can't beat a big hunk of fried meat for $8! They also make pies. Only tried the chocolate, but it's one of the best I've had. This place was worth the 30 mile trip!
My family of 7 was taking our oldest daughter to Dallas airport to fly back to college. We stopped here on the drive. This was great food and service, with an old fashioned diner feel. When you step through the door you feel like you step back in time to the 50's and 60's. The old petrified wood stone building is small and won't hold a large amount of customers. But that gives it a cozy feel for the customers inside. Even the plates and dinnerware's were a retro to a childhood memories of old diners. Real ceramic plates. Cups were the old fashioned indestructible hard plastic cups of decade's past not those styrofoam cups of today that get littered onto our roads. The food was fresh cooked and a pleasure to the taste buds. They also had fresh baked pies for dessert out on the counters to make the mouth water. Ohhhh - did I ever want some of the chocolate pie. But I had my limit of sugar intake for the day and couldn't really get a piece no matter how badly I desired it. This was a Wonderful nostalgic experience. If anyone goes here. Go not just for the food but the experience of a little nostalgia. Set back . Put the cell phones down like they don't exist. Talk to the family and friends around the table, Relax and enjoy a treat of nostalgia and food. And don't forget to get a piece of old-fashioned chocolate pie for me.
If you are looking for that small town Cafe you see in movies and TV shows this is it!! A historic building plus great food, great service and that community love feeling, what more could you ask for!! Love this place!!
Wife and I had breakfast after doctors appointment EXCELLENT food. Great price and large portions. The girls are great also. If you’re traveling go where the locals go but go early. Very unique cafe with great customers also.
What a great experience! We placed our breakfast order and were eating in just over 5 minutes. My food was hot and cooked perfect, I had a veggie omelette with a biscuit some gravy and hash browns. We read a few reviews before coming here which were kinda of negative, but decided to give it a try anyway. So glad we did, others reviews suggested there was a long wait time between ordering and eating, but we practically had no wait. The restaurant isn't huge & I can see it filling up quick so get here early. If you pass this place up, you are missing out on a treat. The restaurant is family owned and they want your business, I was never overlooked and my glass was never empty. They cook all sorts of food and even homemade pies, the kind your great grandma made when you were a kid. If you never got to experience that, here is your chance!
I have to share my new favorite spot in Decatur, Texas! Hands down, they have the best chicken salad I've ever had—my coworker got me hooked, and I've been coming back ever since. But honestly, the staff is what makes this place truly special. I'm still new to Decatur and have only been in a couple of times, but the sweet ladies already knew who I was on the second visit! It wasn't just good customer service; they are the absolute sweetest and treat you like a long time visitor. Thank you so much to the wonderful staff for making me feel so welcome. You've definitely earned a loyal customer!"
We absolutely love this little restaurant. Breakfast is a must. The portion sizes are large and the 3 egg omelets fit across the plate. Great food, great service and an atmosphere that takes you away from the hustle of everyday life. Next time I go, I will add pictures.
Building was built in 1929? so it's quaint and small. Very reminiscent of old time cafes coz that's what it is . Food was excellent, as was the service. As a bonus, it's next to an old motor court, where Bonnie and Clyde stayed and a petrified wood covered gas station. Well worth the stop. 👍
Took a motorcycle trip out here with a group of friends. First time for all of us to visit the whistle stop Cafe and let me tell you an amazing stop and so glad we did. The food was delicious. The staff super friendly and the atmosphere was great! Definitely worth a stop anytime you're nearby!
A great place to enjoy a good country style breakfast. Service is great, you'll never encounter an empty coffee cup. They also have a beautiful selection of fresh baked homemade pies! The setting is awesome! This cafe was established in the 1920's. The cafe is part of a perfectly preserved early 1900's motel and gas station complex built of petrified wood. Take the time to stroll around after eating!
Wow! Whistle Stop Cafe is just WOW! Everyone loved what they ordered. I had the bacon cheese burger with a side of onion rings. The side was made from a full onion so I couldn’t finish it all. A pity because they were the best onion rings I’ve ever had! The atmosphere was amazing. It’s was busy, but not chaotic, just steady.
Sit yer caboose at the Whistle Stop for some good groceries in a classic throw-back, but not kitschy restaurant. Homemade pies are always a good start, the lunch specials have generous portions, and the menu items are tasty as well. Not a bunch of tables and popular with the locals so can get filled up at noon which slows the kitchen some, but the food is fresh and hot, the locals friendly and the service hustles. Then check out the station next door made entirely of petrified wood!
Cute little place with a mom and pop feel. 2 lunch specials, 1 burger, 3 drinks, and a slice of pie was $60 before tax and tip. I'm adding pics of the menu, but they have signs up that due to raising food costs they add $2 to each item. Husband and teen LOVED IT. I didn't love it as much because I had to hear repeatedly from my child how their food is so much better than mine. Mixed feelings on that. 😁 Go, go early. Try to make it at 11. There's only a few tables. They close at 2, closed on weekends.
Very good place, I stopped in Decatur for a quick bite to eat and left very full the biscuits and gravy were very rich n flavor and u can say the biscuit was amazing, I loved every aspect of the cafe. The old diner feel the old town vibe. To the locals talking about the local talent and how they are playing state champions, super dope, I gotta go back and try the chili and the pies they looked very good
A wonderful little (and it is small) downtown diner in old rock building. It was very busy at lunch time. Typical diner fare. Ordered BLT & fries. Standard sandwich & fries were hot & seasoned. Both good. Took some time to get order but, after all, it was lunch, it was crowded & only 2 waitstaff. All in all would recommend.
Very quaint restaurant. Very nice menu with a variety of meals. Nice proportions of food. We had chicken fried chicken and I had a delicious chicken salad sandwich. Atmosphere was charming. This is the place where you can still feel the Country hospitality, old fashioned home cooked meals and a sense of small town cafes.
The Whistle Stop is a Decatur staple - it’s not fancy but the food is delicious, the sweet tea and ranch are killer and the service is efficient. It’s a fav for us.
Waitress not real friendly. The food was great. Very small hole in the wall, cannot accommodate a large party. They might have 10 tables that seat 4 persons each. I was just there mainly for the pie and that made it all for me. Perfectly delightful!
I got the chicken fried steak and my wife got me chicken fried chicken, but we started with onion ring. They were great! They came with ranch, but I prefer more of a horseradish based sauce for dipping. Our plates were both completely covered with food for $8 which is awesome. The batter was crunchy and didn't just gall off like some places. The creamed potatoes didn't even need gravy. You could taste the pork in the green beans which were yummy. The mac n cheese was kinda bland, but the service was great so 4 stars. I'll be back to try one of there 10+ pies.
I saw this Cafe on Texas Country Reporter recently so when we were traveling thru Decatur I decided to stop in. It is a definitely a cafe. There's a small dining room with a few counter stools. When we arrived it was full up with no seating. Since I had 2 small children I decided to leave. We were walking back to the car when a diner came out & said they were fixin to pay if we wanted their table. I'm glad we stayed. I had the patty melt and it was pretty good. The girls liked their meals. Another review stated the fries here were the absolute best. I tried out of curiosity and although good I wouldn't say the "best." I appreciated the reasonable prices. 🙂 The older child & I ordered sweet tea; being a natural Southern I love my tea sweet BUT the tea was so sweet it was hard for me to drink and the child wouldn't drink it. Probably for the best sugar/calorie wise but still..... We did not experience the level of friendly service I saw on TX Country Reporter and our server was definitely rushed. That being said I would eat there again if stopping in Decatur. Good food with good prices is a win win.
Traveling through Grapevine and then dropping down into Decatur we decided to stop at the Whistle Stop Cafe. When we walked in the door we were greeted, but it was not cheerful. It was kind of like one more customer. Which I kind of hated for a shop that has food the way they do! I will say that our personal waitress was new and she was very kind and helpful. It was the initial contact that we had that was somewhat unwelcoming. We were motioned to sit down at a table, which was a dirty table. Thankfully I had bath & body works spray in my purse and so I sprayed, wiped down and sanitized our table. The lady that motioned us to the table did not do that for us. Our waitress came up later after we had been seated. So I do not think there was any way she would have known it was a dirty table. Long story short we ended up ordering a chicken fried steak, which my daughter and I shared!! It was big and wonderful! The rolls were hot and the green beans were very good. My husband got a grilled ham and cheese and my son got a child's plate with quesadillas and their chips. Their chips were home-made. They were really good. He really enjoyed them along with their salsa. The food here is great! It is a hole in the wall, unique and fun restaurant. If the service was a notch higher and a bit kinder it would make this little restaurant an all around hit. Perhaps we stopped on a bad day. We all have them. So give this little place a try. Hopefully your food and experience will be great! Certainly worth a stop in a place very used by locals!!
Delicious. Friendly. Cute. No place is perfect, this place is old and it's age shows a little. But the service was great, never had an empty cuppa and our food was cooked well. They had rye toast! My favorite that many restaurants are ditching. If you're ever through there you should stop and eat!
Really cool place from days gone by. Like stepping back into 1970s small town Texas/Oklahoma. Food was pretty good. Staff were fine, not overly friendly, but certainly not rude. It's definitely worth a stop for the nostalgia. Lots of great looking pies that we didn't get to try. Will visit again.
My wife and I dropped by for lunch in early April 2024. The place was crowded and people kept arriving in a steady stream - but still the wait was not long at all. We had the bacon cheeseburger and the chicken burger. Both were nice and tasty - freshly made. The prices were fair for what you get served. The service quick and professional. The house itself is quite nice and interesting - so is the adjacent old gas station. This is a nice place worth and visit - also if just passing through town as we did.
Food was lackluster. Had the ground beef special. Green beans and ham looked good but was one of the saltiness things I've ever eaten...only ate 1/3 of them. Waitress had no smile and didn't look happy at all.
We were really excited to eat there thinking we would be getting some fried green tomatoes! But we get there and NO fried green tomatoes! The food was good but we drove from Saginaw area to eat there and could have had anything on their menu in Saginaw or closer! There were only 2 waitresses and the place was getting pretty busy. I do have to say it was refreshing to see how kind everyone in the town was, several residents came in and the tables were full and the people sitting alone offered to share their tables! I think it's worth the drive because the town has a lot of history to see and the town is quaint!
Arrived 1035a, missed that breakfast stops 1030. Oh well, lunch menu is solid. Parking extends to across the road, we got the last table. Ordered meatloaf (daily special) and Patty melt. Patty melt was on rye, fantastic. Meatloaf was fair, great sides though except for the fries. On the downside, 45min to get our food. Bad timing perhaps, being early lunch. We'll try again sometime.
Coffee was good. Soft scrambled eggs were hard scrambled, hash browns were cold and half cooked, toast was just warm white bread, not toasted. No wonder this place only had 3 tables seated when I got here. 4 tables seated when I left. Sad!
I visited for breakfast with my wife and mother-in-law. The waitress was less than cordial. She stopped short of treating us with disdain but I felt like an unwelcome guest. (The food was good but not great) I don't think we'll choose to dine there again.
Best thing was the salad. The okra and mashed potatoes were cold and the pork chop tasted like the grease was bad.
My husband & I, saw this place on Texas Country Reporter. We're always looking for mom/pop coffee shops. We loved the old, historical building. The Cafe is located only 30 miss. from where we live. My Spanish omelet was "stuffed" with bacon & veggies. My wheat toast was cold, & hash browns were undercooked. My husband's French toast, eggs, sausage we're decent. Unfortunately, the service wasn't as friendly as the Texas Country Reported stated. At 9 a.m. they were busy. But, not to busy to say good morning. After all it was Christmas time. We expected to find a much friendlier atmosphere. The waitress was moving so fast, when she served us, our coffee before my husband could ask for creamer, she'd already turned her back & walked away. Cute place but we won't return.
This is my second time in here and the first time, food was horrible but I thought I will give it another chance. Now, not only is the food horrible, but our waitress is beyond rude. No personality, no smile, not friendly. I don’t know if it is because my mother and I are the only females in here, but it is just not what you want to be welcomed with in the morning. Has been nice to every man in here but not the woman. I believe her name is “Amber” GO TO BRANDIS.
My husband and I stopped here for lunch based on all of the great reviews. It was packed, but it was one of those places you go into, and everyone there immediately knows "you aren't from around here." I think there must have been several regulars there. We came at lunch time. Besides feeling like an outsider (it's a very tiny restaurant, think the size of a living room for seating), the next thing we noticed was the lack of cleanliness. We nearly left, but the reviews convinced us to stay. Hence, writing our own reviews as to help some poor soul out that might want to try this spot for the first time. Do yourself a favor, and keep driving. It took about 15 minutes to get our orders. I ordered the special--meatloaf. If you thoroughly enjoyed your school days eating in the school cafeteria, this would be something you would enjoy. Otherwise, steer clear. I was told the mashed potatoes were "homemade." They were obviously instant. I didn't mind eating instant potatoes, but it was the lack of transparency that I minded. The rolls were rock hard and cold. The packaged crackers on the table that we nibbled on while we waited were stale. The salad was ok, but it was tiny. My husband got chicken tenders and french fries. The french fries were just reheated frozen fries you can grab at Walmart. The chicken was greasy. He feared he would get sick and did not even finish his food. To top it all off, the mediocre to gross food was way overpriced. We only got water to drink, and the meals I mentioned. It was $32 for both of us to eat--at lunch time--eating lunch cafeteria grade foods. Later that day, in the evening, we went to Casa Torres. I got beef fajitas, my husband got beef enchiladas. Both meals came with beans and rice and of course, free chips and salsa--as much as you wanted. Our total cost there was $28, and I had enough food to get a box to bring home leftovers. The waiter was very attentive and friendly, and the restaurant was clean. Skip Whistle Stop, but if you like Mexican food, try Casa Torres. My only complaint there was I like the thin chips. Theirs are a little thicker than I care for. I hope this helps someone, and I hope this helps Whistle Stop Cafe to know that they need to step it up. I would be concerned about the health department visiting.
The chicken fried steak was burned, tough, and overcooked. The chicken tenders were also burned. When we asked the waitress about this very dark crust, she said the cooking oil is fresh on Mondays, and it affects how brown the frying looks as the week progresses. We were there on a Wednesday. Very disappointing to have walked out of there having spent $80.00 for 4 meals and 2 pies and not enjoyed the main course. We had to perk off the crust to be able to eat the meat to avoid the burned taste. The place is very old and charming, but also very unkept.
Like eating in a dirty bedroom with cafeteria food from high school. We got the special , chicken tenders and fries, two waters to drink, $32. Eat about half of our food and got the feeling we were going to be sick.
The chili dog was hard and the okra was cold. Wouldn’t recommend. By far the worst place I’ve ate at in 2026.
This was a one time a great place to eat. I had heard one of the owners passed away. Has been a few months back. I noticed few cars parked when I pulled up at about 12:10 Went inside and was only 2 people. Ordered a Tea looked at menu. Cheapest thing on the menu was BLT for $9.85 no fries no chips nothing. Fries were 4.95. Waitress was not friendly and I could see why. Paid for the Tea and left. Was sad to see.
They need to clean their grill and fryer. Everything has this unique not so good taste on everything we ordered. My husband tried the fried pork chops that made him sick later in the day.
