Always exquisite from start to finish! Good size portions as well, with creative presentation. Beautiful desserts too!

Incredible fresh and beautifully presented. Portions are petite therefore a starter isn't overwhelming. The wine selection is impressive if you are entertaining. Most definitely will return again. Perfect for entertaining clients.

The food was absolutely delicious. Each plate after the next was delicious and well balanced in flavor. I went to celebrate my birthday and they brought over some delicious dessert for the occasion.

Market is a caliber of restaurant unlike any other I have come across. The chef entices local market vegetables into his menu daily; and is constantly updating/changing his dishes to keep us excited about coming to dine. The wait staff is extremely professional and highly attentive, without being invasive. I would highly recommend anyone to come discover the hidden treasures the restaurant has to offer

Carl Shroeder is the man! I have been here a few times now and I can attest to the consistent perfection. I am always amazed at the flavor pairings that this place puts out; ingredients I never would think go together harmonize like a beautiful symphony in my mouth. The incredible staff produces the best service you could expect and really compliments the whole experience. This is, in my opinion, the best restaurant in San Diego and true culinary adventure into Carl Shroeders tasty mind. Thank you all, I will see you again shortly!

Look at the signs when you enter. Valet parking only. Not sure if there's parking around the corner. I've had this restaurant bookmarked for years now and I'm glad we finally visited Market Restaurant. Stopped by here during Restaurant Week. We were greeted right as we walked in and the front hostess kindly opened the door and welcomed us. What a great gesture. Next, a few other ladies were at the podium and they too greeted us and we checked in. They quickly sat us at our table. The ambiance was very nice but I will say that the restaurant was a bit chilly so room temperature was not comfortable. I even noticed that others had their jackets on. Our server was very nice and detailed. You can tell he loves his job and has passion for it. Great service from the water till our dessert. Food: SHRIMP & CHORIZO CHOWDER BUTTERMILK FRIED CHICKEN & PICKLED BEETS MISO ROASTED COD & EGG NOODLES GRILLED PRIME SKIRT STEAK & CRISPY POTATO RÖSTI Then 2 desserts. All I'm going to say is that everything was delicious. The flavors were bursting in my mouth and I loved every bite of my meal. The balance of ingredients complimented our dishes so well. We ate everything on our plate. Definitely will return again so I can taste their dinner menu. A very charming and welcoming restaurant in Del Mar.

Wow! I rarely go to Market, so it’s been awhile. I went here with some friends for San Diego Restaurant week. What a great restaurant! $60 menu for three courses this week. The quality of the food was worth every penny. I had an amazing mezcal cocktail also. The service was great. The ambience inside is dark and intimate. I recommend the blue cheese soufflé for starters. It was delicious!

We had an awesome meal here. Excellent service from the start the appetizers were fantastic. Gorgonzola Soufflé, Hamachi and Thai soup were amazing. The Lamb , Sea Bass and Short Ribs were all delightful and delicious . The cheese cake was perfect. Not inexpensive . Wonderful

Wow! I’ve heard for years this was a great restaurant, but we just haven’t stopped in. What a shame it took us so long! What a fabulous experience. Food, service, ambiance was all top notch. We ordered the lobster and duck… both were some of the best meals we’ve EVER eaten.

Incredible restaurant for a special dinner. The dishes are very sophisticated, complex, gorgeous, and delicious. Every dish is intentional and I enjoyed all the expertise the chef displayed in flavors, presentation, etc. They have an extensive wine and champagne list. I had the braised short rib, butternut squash soup, lamb, and Hamachi. The Hamachi was my favorite by far. Super fresh, balanced, and delightful. Highly recommend this place for special dinners of any occasion. Service is excellent as well. They make dinner an experience for the night.

Most delicious courses here. We had a party of 6. Reservations definitely reccomend, very accommodating service. Our waiter Max was a truly beautiful experience in itself. We had the braised beef 🤤🤤 melted like butter, I had the Cod, just heavenly so decadent. The plates are just gorgeous

This place nailed every aspect of what a great restaurant should be. If you are deciding between a few places, and this one is on the list, forget the others and come here. I was impressed that this place pays attention to the details, the things that matter. Those are the things I look for in a great restaurant, and this place has it. They get it. I know that’s vague, but trust me. Experience it for yourself. 👏🫡

Bravo, Bravo! Veramente buono! Tutto ottimo e ben cucinato, sapori ben assortiti.

L

Overall, a wonderful dining experience with a phenomenal three-course meal (starter, entree, dessert). Between those and the added small plate and warmed bread, you will leave plenty full. Only con during the dinner was: We went for a birthday celebration and they gave us a sealed birthday card. While that's a nice gesture, we realized later it had the wrong name written (we thought it was humourous but hope whatever other table they mixed it with felt the same way). Tip about parking (and a ding against the service): There is a mandatory $6 or $7 valet parking if you park on the premise. It's not about the cost but the principle. Feel free to drive down the next street to De La Valle Pl where there is free parking available.

I came here for my husband’s birthday dinner and was completely wowed. It was one of the best meals we have had in the past year. I am not a huge prix fixe menu person because there is a lot I do not/cannot eat but there was so much to choose from with each course. Every single course was delicious. The portions I thought were quite large. My highlight was actually the dessert. I never ever order dessert. I just don’t have a big sweet tooth but, The Rhubarb Sundae. I am still thinking about it.

Market Restaurant and Bar came highly recommended to my husband and I and we could not be happier we dined there. The bartender Jay made a very well shaken martini just like my husband loves. The wine selection is great. The bar and lounge area are super inviting. The restaurant is sleek and elegant in design. The manager Umberto is the best. He brings hospitality to another level. We loved our server Lilah she was attentive and anticipated our every need. My husband started off with the Brentwood farm sweet corn soup and he loved every drop. I had the braised bacon and heirloom tomato salad then duck for my husband and tuna for me along with a braised short rib. For dessert we ordered both the chocolate and melon. We left the restaurant feeling full, satisfied and ready to return another time!

The food here is as good as it gets. Carl is absolutely brilliant in his combinations of flavors. The dishes have amazing complexity, with no ingredient getting in the way of another. The portion sizes are very generous. Chelsea our waitress was on top of all our needs, in a perfect way. Everyone was professional. The greeters, bus people and the kitchen staff. It was truly wonderful from beginning to end. We live 160 miles from here. Otherwise we would eat here at least once a week. I don’t understand Michlin not giving them multiple stars.

MARKET is a 5 star restaurant in every way. Our server was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. The room was beautiful, and quiet enough for easy conversation. The four of us brought in wine which paired wonderfully with the gourmet cuisine. Everyone loved their meals. I had the apple smoked king salmon to start, and the short ribs as my entree. The plating was stunning, and the tastes were carefully chosen, woven together and prepared perfectly. Desserts were also delicious! We look forward to returning to MARKET on our next trip to southern California!

Not a bad meal for the price! Service is very attentive and clean. Most of the dishes were great. The bar area is also a sushi spot which is cool. They have these fancy degloved almonds from Spain on the cheeseboard too. Menu changes daily so no recommendations.

After trying a bunch of new restaurants, I’ve found that this one is still my favorite. I keep coming back because it always delivers the best. The fresh, colorful plates and the warm, friendly service are just a few of the things I love about this place.

William O'Dell

I have a friend who a pastry chef who told me about this place. This is fine dining they way it's supposed to be. As such, it's not cheap, but you get what you pay for. No gimmicks, no glamor, just stellar food done right. If you want see a rising star when their motives and work is pure and has assembled a team that get his vision, you must go to Market. Take a second mortgage on the house, sell blood, do whatever it takes, but go here and just say yes to whatever they suggest. Chef Carl and his disciples are going to get at least one Michelin star for his work here if there is any justice in the world. I have been there a number of times and will go again, universe willing. Five stars aren't enough.

A
Alison Patton

Would give this restaurant 6 stars if I could. One of the best meals we've had in years. It was like dining at a Michelin restaurant in a European city (which, as everyone who lives in San Diego knows, is quite hard to find in San Diego, even at the pricier restaurants with top reviews). We are big-time foodies, one of us with San Francisco roots, and have been lucky enough to dine in the major cities in the U.S. and abroad). Our standards are high, and very few restaurants in San Diego knock our socks off. This one did. I don't even know where to start. There were 4 of us and we're still talking about it the next day. We shared all our dishes, so we were able to try a total of 12 menu items (between the starters, entrees and dessert), and there were also 2 "amuse-bouche". Every single thing we put in our mouth was delicious. They clearly use the freshest and highest quality ingredients. Each dish was prepared with tremendous skill, passion and creativity. What we loved most is this chef obviously knows exactly what he is doing and lets the food speak for itself instead of trying too hard and covering up the natural flavors with too much pomp and circumstance. One of the things we've noticed with top restaurants (even with some of the Michelin star restaurants) is they try so hard to be "different" and "ultra-creative" that they opt for form over substance, and flavor suffers. Not here. It felt like the entire focus at this restaurant is on flavor and making each dish utterly delicious and memorable. What we experienced was one dish after another containing a delicate and creative mix of ingredients that allowed the natural flavors to compliment and showcase each other. The presentation of each plate was gorgeous too, without sacrificing taste. Another way it felt like a top European restaurant was the level of service. The large service staff worked seamlessly in tandem, anticipated our every need, were knowledgeable about the menu, made excellent recommendations, and without fail each and every one of them (even the people clearing our plates and refilling our glasses) were warm and friendly and very attentive. You can tell when the staff is invested in the restaurant and cares about your dining experience just as much as the chef. (Our server named Mike was friendly, engaging and highly professional. Every tip he gave us throughout the ordering was right on target, and he felt like an old friend by the time we finished the meal.) Other pluses: The restaurant is elegant and well-designed, with very comfortable chairs, thoughtful table placement, and well-planned acoustics such that noise didn't carry. Even the person at our table who has trouble hearing had no difficultly hearing everyone throughout the dinner -- and this was on a Friday night when the restaurant was packed. Also, the portions were large (so large that they kindly gave us to-go boxes and we're excited to have the leftovers for lunch today.) All of us give this restaurant our unreserved highest recommendation. It's worth every penny. A night and a meal we will never forget.

Amazing place to explore farm to table kind of restaurant in San Diego area

This is a high end restaurant, know that in advance. But it is worth every penny when you have something special to celebrate, or this fits your financial situations. The food was absolutely amazing in taste, complexity, and presentation. The service was the best of the best. And the setting... so many restaurants think noise makes them "seem" THE place to be, and thus think they are successful. Market goes to the polar opposite. I have never been in a restaurant that had such attention to sound proofing. Every table is in it's own world (excluding the bar area which has its own vibe). We could actually enjoy the company and conversation. Tables adjacent did the same but with no intrusion on each other. There have been many special occasions out at restaurants, but I expect this is to remain at the top of memories for a long time, celebrating my wife's birthday for a milestone year. If you want the finest of dining experiences, this is the restaurant to place at the top of your list.

Great restaurant and a fantastic place to celebrate my birthday! Testing menu is amazing. The scallops, artichoke soup and green miso sea bass are a must-try!

Market is always such a fantastic experience from start to finish. Each menu item is absolutely delicious and presented beautifully from the first fantastic cocktail to the final salted carmel morsel. The service is consistently impeccable and the atmosphere is romantic and intimate. My husband will always order the Gorgonzola soufflé, and I enjoy the many other fresh options that the chef features in the first course. The mains are consistently high quality proteins beautifully paired with seasonal vegetables, fruits and delicious sauces. The desserts are perfect - elegant and not too sweet. We love celebrating our most special occasions here year after year!

Some of the best meals I’ve ever had have been here at market! The chef and kitchen crew are beyond compare. Both the bar and restaurant seating are great depending upon what you are in the mood for- more casual, or a quieter table for more special occasions. Great variety in seasonal selections alongside go-to favorites. Great wine list, creative cocktails. I’ve traveled extensively and dined in wonderful restaurants. This one is among my favorite places.

C
Charlie Raeside

I’ve been here multiple times. Carl Schroeder is an absolute master of his craft. In my opinion, take it or leave it, the reason why the Michelin Star has eluded him is the ambience and bar. The best way to describe the ambience is like you’re on a discount cruise liner. It feels like an outdated country club dining room. The cocktails at the bar are sub par to okay. But my goodness can this man cook! Every meal I’ve eaten has been better than the last. Regardless of the “issues” I stated above this continues to be the staple restaurant my wife and I patron for date night. If you’re looking for 3 star food at an affordable price you MUST try MARKET.

This Fabulous place had the most unique and esthetically GORGEOUS food. The courses were laid out so Beautifully and the ingredients were unique and different, but worked so well. I got to be adventurous and try new things, and loved it! Spencer was our waiter and he was attentive and the entire staff and service was wonderful. Everything was executed perfectly. The only things they could improve is the front staff, the girls gave me dirty looks and we're not very kind. I was a hostess way back when, and it's your job to be warm kind and smile. They were fake and I even tried to smile more and compliment them, which I regret, because they were standoffish and it wasn't a pretty look. I wish they were kinder, it ruined the start of my experience dining here and when I left. They are the first people you see and last people you see and it ruins the good efforts the rest of the staff makes. They act like they didn't want to be there and looked bored and annoyed, maybe you should hire front of house staff that appreciate that job 😆🤦🏼‍♀️🤣

One of the best restaurants in Socal- probably the best food I have had in SoCal! Beats most Manhattan restaurants! The chef really knows what he is doing, hats off to you!!! I only wish it was not so pricey and the wait staff was little more down to earth.

D
Dana Crowell

Great for special occasions. Exceptional service, wine list, appetizers, desserts. Lamb was fantastic.. Tenderloin for $50 extra was slightly overcooked. Hamachi was best thing. Didn't care for Mushroom ravioli because very vegetarian geared, few ravioli. Muso Cod was small portion and salter than it used to be. Apple crepe was wonderful,

We went here for my birthday and I have to say it was absolutely outstanding. The service is absolutely five star top-notch something you would experience in New York City. I had the black card which was cooked to perfection and of course the blue cheese soufflé for the appetizer that goes absolutely perfectly with the cornmeal muffins served in the bread basket. The server figured out that it was my birthday and brought me a slice of delicious cake with a candle to top it all off. I would recommend this place to anyone in a heartbeat. It is that good. One of the top three restaurants in San Diego.

J
John Danahy

This is, quite literally, one of the best dinner meals I've ever had. Presentation, flavors, balance, service, everything... perfection. Shocked there isn't a Michelin star on this chef... highly deserving. Love that it's in my neighborhood, regretting that I have not been a regular.

C
Christopher Hall

We were told we were in for a food experience but were still in awe of this place. From the moment we sat down until the last bite, it was something we have never experienced and we have traveled the world. The FRESHEST ingredients and the most innovative plating and mixtures of seemingly unconnected ingredients led to a phenomenal food experience. The preparation, service and presentation were unbelievable. Well done!

J
Judy Bee

We had a party of six for my birthday. I was a little concerned that the menu was not the normal menu but a tasting menu with options. I should never have doubted chef Kurt. Every single item on the menu was perfection. Splendidly prepared and presented and swoon fully delicious. Kurt and his staff have made sure that they only offer things that they can do to their standard. Lots of space between tables a very attentive staff, if you can get Spencer as your server you won’t be disappointed. This is my all-time favorite spot and continues to be. Bravo

A
Allison Zhong

Phenomenal food and service, one of my new favorite restaurants in the San Diego area! Everything we ate was fabulous, but our favorites were the gorgonzola soufflé and tuna tartare appetizers - those were to die for! The complimentary bread and corn muffins were also a highlight, sooo good. Our server, Spencer, was wonderful too.

K
Kasey Ainsworth

Perhaps one of the most amazing dinners I have ever had. Chef is imaginative, truly special dishes that serve up that magic mix of non-pretention taste with genuine surprise/ingenuity of invention! Truly deserving of a Michelin Star. Service is superb. Best food in San Diego by far.

J

Chef Carl’s Market restaurant will treat you to the best gastronomical experiences you will ever have. His dishes, by themselves, are a work of art. You would want to take pictures. His flavor combinations will blow your mind. You would think that putting different types of foods together would be a disaster, but Chef Carl and his kitchen staff always make them work out beautifully. His menu changes every other week and I look forward to trying something new each time I go there. One of his signature dishes, the wine braised short ribs, you will never get tired of. The rich, but not heavy, flavor of the meat is so succulent, it melts in your mouth. I love the way Chef Carl can cater to your allergies so well, that you would never know anything was missing from the dish. His whole staff are so welcoming and kind. The hostess(s) greet you by name with smiles and friendliness. The waiters, waitresses and food servers are very knowledgeable and have a way of explaining each dish in delicious detail. Even though this is an upscale restaurant, there is full respect but no snobbishness. The managers, Shane, Antoine and Alex (Sommelier) will come to your table to chit chat, make sure you all your needs are taken care of and make you feel welcome. Even the busboys are courteous and friendly. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for amazing food, friendly staff and an upscale atmosphere.

My husband and I have been coming to Market almost every Thursday for years! I’m not sure I have the right words to express the incredible taste of this delicious food. Everything I’ve enjoyed over the years has been consistently excellent. The atmosphere, the service, the hospitality are truly exceptional! And above all the amazing chef, Carl Schroeder!

This place is truly one of the best restaurants I have ever had the pleasure of dining at. The food presentation was like a work of art, not to mention the incredible flavors. The staff was so friendly and it was like watching a symphony that didn’t miss a beat. It was mine and my husband’s anniversary and it was made truly special by Chef Carl. Thank you for such a special night we will definitely be back and will tell everyone we know!

J

We came for our anniversary and had a wonderful time. They actually had an anniversary card signed by the staff waiting for us at our table when we arrived. The staff had impeccable service. They were so attentive and always made sure our drinks were topped off and we had what we needed. The food was also exceptional. The menu is constantly changing, and the chef pays such close attention to details and using local in season ingredients that you can absolutely taste the freshness when taking a bite. My favorite course was my starter which was a soup made with fresh sweet corn. I couldn't stop eating. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

E
Ebru Saitoglu

It has been a very good experience. The food is one of the best foods that I have ever had in San Diego. We have tried the 3 course meal with wine pairing. Everything was fresh and the wine choices were incredible from all around the world. The only negative part that I can add is that the dinner was for my birthday. Even though there is a note added, it seems like nobody reads them. There was no special activity, such as a basic candle or a note that came with any of the food.

C

Believe the hype. Also if you have Amex platinum you can get $100 off via Resy. No brainier. Get your reservations in advance!

Amazing all around. My wife and i had an awesome meal/experience here. From before we arrived and had to call and let them know we were going to be late, through our meal attentively clearing plates once we finished, to the end as they spoke with us as we left it was such a great experience. Our server Grady took such pride in making sure we had an enjoyable experience. He was very knowledgeable about the menu and the pairings. Well worth the trip, I would definitely recommend it to anyone in the San Diego area.

M

Super great date night! I took my wife to eat in the dining room (I was able to make reservations the day before) for dinner. My wife has recently had surgery and the staff were very accommodating to my request for a quiet corner in the restaurant, and our waiter was top notch being very friendly and helpful when it came to explaining the menu items. The meals they served were pretty small portions, but we were both full after all the courses were served. The food itself was great tasting. It is more pricey than I can typically afford, but as a treat to my wife it was well worth the near $200 for a fancier dining experience. I would definitely recommend going at least once.

C
Carl Dziuk

Exceptional. The flavors exquisite, and atmosphere quiet/casual (not too stuffy), and great service. The bluefin tartar was complex and delicious. The lamb perfectly cooked. The courses gave a variety of fish/meat/lamb option, or lighter. I definitely recommend for local foodies, or vacationers looking for a near Michelin star level dining.

Upon our warm greeting when we entered our eyes gazed around the beautiful restaurant. We were promptly seated at our reserved time. Our waiter and any staff member were on top of every need we might have maybe even before we knew it! :) Our main waiter made every moment of our meal a delight. His timing was impeccable. Not once made us feel rushed. He was very present anytime we might need anything. It was our daughter’s birthday and he helped to make it a special one. Now….the food. Oh my goodness the food!!! How does the chef do it??? So many flavors, yet everyone separate. Every tastebud satisfied! We had the tenderloin, the halibut, the short rib, the hot smoked salmon, every dessert option. The plentiful portions will leave you more than satisfied. I didn’t take pics but the presentation of each dish is a masterpiece not only by the eye but by how they appease your tastebuds! Thank you Market Restaurant for an unforgettable dining experience. You nailed it from beginning to end!

My husband and I stumbled upon this restaurant by accident as we were looking to have a nice dinner in the Del Mar area and it was the most memorable experience. The drinks, food, hospitality and overall atmosphere was phenomenal. You can really taste the love and consideration of the pallet in the food. My husband and I were blown away. We sat at the bar and Lino took SUCH great care of us. He was so knowledgeable about the entire menu. He made our experience so memorable. My husband and I were so happy to have found a new date spot! Everyone should try The Market. It will not disappoint!

D

Overall, it was a very good experience. The food was some of the best I've had in San Diego. We tried the three-course meal with wine pairing, and everything was fresh with incredible wine choices from around the world. The only downside was that despite mentioning my birthday in the reservation, there was no special acknowledgment like a candle or note with the food.

Wow. First timers from Texas. Outstanding, friendly, courteous, and professional service from everyone. FRESH food well cooked. Fine dining. Outstanding cocktail and wine options. A must if visiting San Diego. Totally worth the trip. We had a very nice birthday card for my wife who was celebrating her birthday! Special thanks to Grady! Will be back many times!!!

The Market experience is one of the best in San Diego. The ambience is warm and simple and allows for the food to be the star. Service is impeccable; servers are present, but not intrusive- drinks were always full, empty plates were removed quickly, silverware was set. The food is clean, balanced and thoughtful. Chef Carl is genius.

My new favorite restaurant!! We will definitely be back soon. Excellence from the moment we entered the restaurant. Superior selections offered. Each course was uniquely delightfully delicious. Not sure how often they change their menu.

The food here is outstanding! The sushi is incredibly fresh. Flavor profiles were impressive with everything we got. Forewarning that the bar area is quite loud, due to acoustics. Book a table! You won’t be disappointed.

Market’s Pre Fixe menu is absolutely to die for. They are so incredibly consistent - I have visited multiple times in the past 3-4 years, and each visit was met with incredible food, wonderful flavors, lovely service (not too over-the-top), and just an all around stellar experience. I don’t live in the San Diego area, but every time I visit this part of the US, I look forward to coming back here. They are incredible. So consistent. Kudos to the chef and team. Keep it up. Your hard work is appreciated.

It's over 10 years since I last dined at Market. I chose it for last night's dinner for a holiday celebration for our office. I'm happy to say that the service and food preparation are every bit as good as I had remembered. We chose the tasting menu. One often thinks of tasting menu portion sizes as being small, but all of the portions were full sized. For the appetizer I chose the blue cheese souffle, grouper for the main, and the "creamsicle" for dessert. I highly recommend market for a special dinner. It's definitely on my short list for our upcoming anniversary.

S
Samuel Bjorklund

I believe our server's name was Brian M.(on the receipt). Very attentive and kind. We came in late on Valentines and later in the meal I was feeling unwell. He noticed almost immediately and assisted getting my meal packaged and bringing out a soda a bitters, honestly probably saved our night. Very good service.

first we have to thank STEVE THE DRIVER!! For the recommendation Not sure where to start but Absolutely loved our dinner at Market Restaurant + Bar! Everything from the service to the food was flawless. The ahi tartare was fresh and flavorful, and the braised short ribs were melt-in-your-mouth perfect. Don’t skip the butterscotch pudding — it’s unreal. Elegant vibe without feeling stuffy — easily one of the best dining experiences in North County.

Really appreciated the dim lighting and elegant interior design. Made for great ambience. This was followed by excellent service by our waiter Max who was superb in describing the food and wine options. The three course menu was appealing to the eye and palate. Definitely Michelin quality. Management visibly apparent and making rounds. Valet parking was seamless and quick. Will enthusiastically recommend and return.

One of the best dinners I have had! Blue cheese soufflé with pear is divine, and the lamb is cooked to perfection and full of flavor. Desserts are pieces of art work. We will be back.

MARKET Restaurant + Bar in Del Mar was an amazing fine dining experience and the perfect way to kick off my first visit to San Diego! It came highly recommended by food publications like Eater, and it definitely delivered. The ambiance is dark, elegant, and upscale, with a high-end steakhouse feel. Parking is valet-only but just $6, which is a great deal for the area. Our server, Chelsea, was phenomenal—attentive, warm, and spot-on with her recommendations. She really made the evening special. MARKET offers a 3-course tasting menu, and I loved every dish. The salmon beet salad was vibrant and flavorful, the rack of lamb was perfectly cooked and came with delicious ravioli and Chinese broccoli, and the apricot cheesecake dessert with sorbet was the perfect light, refreshing finish. I also tried a whiskey + St-Germain cocktail—unique and surprisingly well-balanced. From start to finish, everything felt thoughtful and high-quality. Highly recommend MARKET for anyone looking for an elevated dining experience in San Diego!

Amazing food, generous portions and very helpful staff. We sat down for the 3 course menu and were greeted by our server Ted, who was very helpful navigating my wife's dietary restrictions, which are usually an issue. The staff were attentive and the food was amazing. In my experience, a lot of places like this you get one really good course and the rest of the meal is just okay, but everything we tried and tasted here was top notch. The only very minor complaint I had was the red meats were salted just a bit too much for my taste but they were still amazing. I'd definitely come back to eat here on our next trip to San Diego.

It was a perfect experience! The service was outstanding with a waiter who was extremely familiar with the menu and the wine list. The food had an inventive mix of flavors and was incredibly fresh. We started with the tuna tartar and the beef carpaccio croquettes. For our entrees we had the miso sea bass. The waiter stated that every dish on the menu was wonderful and after our experience I am sure that is true! Thank you for a great evening and some very memorable food!

The food is incredible here. But the prices are a bit more than you'll pay for similar quality elsewhere. A bit too crowded to be called romantic.

I had the Beef tenderloin with lobster. The beef was a bit salty, other than that everything was good

The food was phenomenal, the restaurant is gorgeous, and the drinks were great. Only thing keeping this from being a 5 star review was our server. He was just okay. He was nice but at this pricepoint, with such a beautiful restaurant and amazing food, I expected more refinement from the serving staff, not the diner-style service we received. The service wasn't so bad that I won't be back. I would still encourage anyone reading this review to go because the food is absolutely worth it.

Perfect evening forour anniversarycelebration as it seems to be the place for celebrations as two other couples were celebrating their anniversary. Service was attentive without being intrusive. It's a prix fixe menu with many interesting options. Not your run of the mill meat, potatoes, and salad place. We both enjoyed every thing we ordered. My only complaint is that they are literally out of town with nothing near and they have their own parking with only a few steps to the door and yet they force you to do their valet parking, really?!

Food was fantastic. One of the few high end places that didn't sabotage the menu with weird stuff, and also served fair sized portions... I wanted to try everything on the menu. Atmosphere is dark ... it left me wondering how dirty the upholstery is... at one point we noticed a spider crawling around us. One main strike against this place- they charge for water. $8 a bottle. Maybe I'm cheap and inexperienced, but I was surprised to see 2x of those on my bill.

Was food good? Yes. However our friends complained that it was a little over salty, I also tasted their food and they were right. For a restaurant at this level, the level of salt should not even questionable. Service was good but could have been better, for example no one asked whether it was a special day for us, there were some options that are not in the menu, but we did not know their pricing until we see the bill. When we got the bill, bill was not easy to understand. We only ordered 4 tasting menu and 3 wine glasses however the bill has all the items we ate, some had pricing but some showed “$0”. It is a pity that parking is valet only, however you can park in front of small shopping center which is one block away. Atmosphere was great.

Hostess at the front desk were racists and super rude!!! A white blonde and long hair black eye with black hair. The blonde one Gave me a half printed menu that I cannot even read the name of the dishes. My white husband can get a normal one. Did I get apology and a new one? No!!!!!! The rest is good. I paid $380 for our two, upgraded the menu.

Upscale Californian restaurant between del Mar and rancho Santa Fe. Food is pretty good and well plated. Not sure it's worth the price.

The first time we tried this place earlier this yr we loved it. Second time on a recent revisit was a bit of a letdown in terms of timing, wine, and food. Nothing devastatingly bad, but for a high end restaurant, this night was a miss. First off, the initial bubbly intro was so late we sat for a few minutes wondering if the amuse bouche was supposed to be eaten before they came to pour. Granted I relayed to the waitress that I wasn’t a fan of bubblies so she was nice enough to pour me an alternate white. But while we were waiting, the amuse bouche arrived and not being certain if the bubble was supposed to pair with them as we had gotten the wine pairing, we went ahead with it only for the drinks to finally arrive right after. I can’t recall going to a restaurant and not getting served the welcome wine before any food started to arrive so we sat there a little awkward and confused. The appetizers were good to great with the hamachi being good and the flavor combos of the artichoke & burrata salad being excellent. The middle eastern influenced dressing on the artichoke salad topped with the prosciutto, olives, snow peas and fennel coupled on the side by the burrata on top of some fried noodles and mixed in a tomato compote had a lot going on but somehow it worked beautifully and was our favorite dish of the evening. For the entree course, we paid the up-charge for both the lobster and dry aged steak. The lobster was good, nothing wow, nothing fancy (hard to screw up lobster), nothing to write home about but no complaints. But their 45 day “dry aged” steak which had us very excited was anything but dry aged and doused with a sauce, probably to disguise the fact it wasn’t dry aged at all. An utter disappointment as we are huge fans of dry aged beef, esp for the $50 upcharge. The entree portions were decent to big which was fine but then to (not) top it off, pun intended, we paid for the wine pairing and the pours were so small throughout the meal we couldn’t even enjoy a sip with every bite of the dishes esp as my wife and I were sharing each dish and trying each other’s wine. For paying $69 per person for the wine pairing, we would have been better off getting a single bottle instead. To pour salt on the wounds, on a cool and rainy evening, where I was sitting was getting blasted with a steady flow of cold AC air. I usually don’t mind colder settings but had to keep my jacket on during the evening as did my wife who was getting hit peripherally with it as well. Regardless, as an former waiter myself and knowing how hard of a job it is, we still left a 20% gratuity but the restaurant adding on the 4.5% surcharge nonsense every restaurant feels justified throwing onto a bill lately was a second serving of salt on the wounds and for spending over $500 for the evening, our second, and most likely final, visit was a big letdown.

Dined here while in town for work and this restaurant looked interesting. Unfortunately, it's a case of style over substance, as the interesting atmosphere was the only selling point. While the blue cheese souffle appetizer was an unexpected & wonderful start to the meal, the rest of the food left me disappointed - especially for the price. My sea bass was chewy and forgettable, with a sauce that tasted like it came from a jar. While my dining partner's steak was cooked correctly, the overall flavor was forgettable. The dessert courses looked like they were trying to be trendy, but neither the Chocolate nor the Cheese options felt like they belonged on an $85 3-course menu. I wonder if we would have had a different experience if we tried different plates - but when I asked our server what they recommended or were known for before ordering, he more or less said that everything is good. I didn't think much of it at the time, but in hindsight I wonder if that was his attempt to absolve himself from liability if he recommended something ultimately disappointing... When the check came, I noticed a 4.5% "cost of business" fee tacked on at the end of the list that was the nail in the coffin. I will NOT be returning here in the future for dinner when there are some fantastic restaurants nearby that are much more affordable.

Gives me no pleasure to leave a negative review. Specially when everyone, except our server was exceptional. I was treating my boyfriend to a very special dinner, we both live in Del Mar over 30 years and have enjoyed this restaurant, tonight at 8:30pm, not busy, we sat at a table by the bar near the restrooms. Great ambiance, cool like always, but our waitress was hanging out giving her back to us the entire evening!! I had to get up and tap her shoulder to get a drink for my guest!! We could hear her laughter..and just really bummed us both. Ugh! I was so bummed to watch my date just look over at her back and then me... with the unspoken words..is she going to stop? I was the chef, and came out to see what her presence did to such a beautiful dinner presentation.. We come here for the food and the attention. This was dinner, her back to us and the her conversations. THE ENTIRE NIGHT. Ask the other wonderful waiters!! They!! They made the difference!

Mandatory valet with no free self-parking option. Our reservation was at 7:45, but we were kept waiting ~20 mins for our table, so off to a bad start. The Amuse-bouche we were served was quite good. The scallops appetizer was the best thing we had all night. The rest of the food didn’t really stand out. The braised short rib was rich but otherwise lacking. Service was overall good, other than not having our water filled for an extended period.

Since the new owners have taken over, the price Has increased quite a bit. I was a regular at market restaurant for years, but the increase in price makes The experience overpriced. I loved the previous owners and felt that they presented amazing Cuisine for a fair price. And the employees were amazing. I hope the new owners know they have big shoes to fill and raising the Prices is not a good way to start.

I have been to and thoroughly enjoyed 'The Market Restaurant' on Via de la Valle in Del Mar many times. I took my family there for a holiday dining experience in December and we had a good time. BUT, when I met a girlfriend to enjoy the ala carte menu less than a week ago everything was sub par or worse! I ordered a glass of champagne...it was flat so the server brought me another and it actually had bubbles in the glass. Go figure! I ordered a fish dinner (unfortunately not one chicken dish on the menu) the fish was not delicate in the middle but passable, however, as I worked my way to the ends of the piece it was dry and sinewy. I showed it to the server and asked her to show the Chef. I was not asking for a refund of any type I just thought he should see it. I didn't really get any feedback and later the server offered me something else to eat. I was full by then but a nice gesture. So I decided to order a Cosmos. I received a large wine glass with a very dark red, frothy concoction. It was so sour and the texture a bit thick and unpleasant to drink. The server was almost apologetic when she brought it to me and said the bartender was using the actual pomegranate fruit and blending it up. Interesting idea but maybe he should have tested it first? That being said I hope this is not a sign that 'The Market' is going downhill. I love the casual atmosphere...it is no longer formal and people dress accordingly. My husband actually felt overdressed in a sports coat. It's great but now we know! I don't write reviews to make negative comments but this was just SO bad. It's not inexpensive restaurant so I have greater expectations.

Disappointing Experience at MARKET Restaurant + Bar We recently dined at MARKET Restaurant + Bar, hoping for an exceptional evening given its reputation. While some dishes were enjoyable, the overall experience was deeply disappointing due to major service and kitchen issues. Highlights: • Starters: The Sweet Potato Soup and Duck Confit were excellent, showcasing thoughtful preparation and flavor. • Entrees: • The Short Ribs with Poached Lobster Add-On was good but didn’t stand out. • The Wagyu New York Strip was disappointing. At $135, it was overpriced for the quality, lacking the expected richness of premium Wagyu. However, the sides served with the steak were excellent and perhaps the best part of the meal. Major Issues: 1. Unacceptably Slow Service: • From the moment we were seated at 6 p.m., the pace of service was glacial. It took over an hour to receive our first course, and the main course arrived after one hour and 45 minutes. • Despite spending 2 hours and 20 minutes at the restaurant, we never received dessert and ultimately had to ask for the check out of frustration. • Other tables were visibly unhappy as well, with guests skipping dessert and leaving early due to the delays. 2. Lack of Continuity: Tables were not cleared promptly, and there was little attention to maintaining the flow of the meal. This created a fragmented and frustrating dining experience. 3. No Dessert: We were charged for the full meal, including dessert, which was never served. This oversight left a bitter note to end the night. Overall Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (3/5) While the food had its highlights, the disorganized service and painfully slow pacing ruined the experience. For a restaurant of this caliber, these issues are inexcusable. Unfortunately, we cannot recommend it and left the restaurant disappointed and unsatisfied.

Could not be more disappointed with the new ownership and recent menu changes. I've dined here several times in the past when the restaurant offered a set three-course prix fixe menu, and every experience was outstanding - fresh, thoughtful food, spectacular service, and a true five-star feel. I had dined here for a birthday dinner then referred my work to come here for a work dinner because I was such a fan. Because of these past visits, we enthusiastically recommended this restaurant to my parents and convinced them to drive over two hours to celebrate their anniversary dinner here with us. Unfortunately, tonight's experience fell far short of what this place once was. Upon arrival, we were surprised to see an à la carte menu alongside a much smaller (and more expensive) prix fixe option - which, by the way, does not match what's currently listed on the restaurant's website. Our server also didn't inform us until after we'd decided what to order - with some guests planning to order à la carte and others preferring the prix fixe - that the entire table had to order from the same menu. This was never mentioned upfront and felt like a very strange business decision. She explained that the restaurant was sold to a regular back in September and that changes had just begun rolling out this month. We asked if there was any flexibility to accommodate both menus at the table, and while the server said she'd check with a manager, the answer ultimately came back as a flat no, without a manager ever stopping by to explain or discuss the situation. Given how limited the prix fixe options were, we reluctantly chose to order à la carte. Service throughout the evening was slow and inattentive. We had to ask for bread service, water refills were delayed, and the time between appetizers and entrées was over 25-30 minutes. The food itself was fine, but the overall experience left a bad taste. We even had to ask for the homemade caramels that used to be a thoughtful touch when the check was dropped. Having dined here before, we knew what to expect and this entire night just missed the mark. Overall, we didn't feel taken care of at all, which is especially disappointing when you're spending approx. $400 on a dinner (not including everyone ordering beverages). What was once a true gem now, is just another expensive restaurant. With so many other incredible dining options in San Diego, this restaurant won't be on our list again. Most disappointing of all was that this was meant to be a special anniversary dinner for my parents to celebrate 37 years of marriage. A huge letdown for them having driven 2 hours to get here and for the experience we had.

Tried to make a reservation for 8 people (not an event!) and was quoted a minimum of $7500 to have 8 people dine here, and that rate applies because there are more than 6 people. That's absolutely their prerogative if they want to have an almost $1000 per person minimum. However, I gave the service here 1 star because the manager also let us know that the cost is high because we would be "taking away from other guests." So do not have more than 5 friends if you want to dine here and also be aware that your presence is an inconvenience to others!

My husband and I were frequent diners of Market, specifically the bar because we really enjoyed the relaxed, casual vibe and delicious sushi. We would go there probably 2 to 3 times a month. We always left saying that was absolutely delicious and the service was top-notch. Our most recent outing this past Saturday, I would say everything was completely different. The hostess greeted us as usual with their kind and friendly demeanor, and sat us down at our table. We noticed that the table was so dark while there was a very dimly light candle but none of us could see anything so we were all shining our phone flashlights to view the menu, especially the sushi menu that you could barely read. It took about 5 to 10 minutes for someone to come over to us and my husband asked if they had a specific type of wine which was reasonable because we usually write bottles of wine down that we enjoy and he said no we don't have that. He looked away and said he would come back and take our order. My husband noticed rather quickly that they did in fact have that bottle, but that's OK, no big deal. We carried on with our flashlights looking at the menu. We then very quickly realized that all of the prices have gone up, I mean way up. Not just a dollar or two I'm talking a sushi roll that I believe used to be $27 is now $35 for one roll. A salad was $35. We continued on because as I said before we love this restaurant and we love their sushi and we love their service. Three out of the four of us wanted sushi, but all of their rolls were not only $35 but also had zero descriptions on them. They just gave it a title like the Solana, market, but now we are all wondering because we don't clearly remember what is in each of the rolls. We told my parents who were visiting from out of town that they recently switched ownership and very quickly we could tell. We did not see the owners walking around and did not see a Manager walking around either. We also saw friends at the bar who then came over to see us and they could also not believe the gigantic hike and prices and mentioned it to us immediately. They even mentioned they both got a side salad and it cost $62 for two side salads. We continued on and waited for the waiter to come over to take our order but we obviously had several questions about the rolls because there was no description on the menu. We waited. Five minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, and then 20 minutes. We'd then decided for these prices and no one coming over to help us, It was not worth it. I got up and wanted to speak to the manager because as a business owner myself, it is always good to know how people can improve and how the restaurant and service can improve. I told the new manager exactly what happened and his words were, "I'm sorry". He didn't say anything else, he didn't take care of us, he didn't ask us to please be seated and he would bring our drinks right over, nothing. He only said sorry and let our party walk out. He did nothing to try and save us. He didn't wonder what was going on or ask any deeper questions. He looked dumbfounded. Let's just say this was one of the most disappointing experiences we've ever had at this restaurant with awful service or barely any service I should say. I really hope the ownership gets a handle of what is going on because we would like to come back and give it another shot, but we were just simply shocked at the lack of service and large price increase. The main dining room at this point offers the three course meal prefix menu for 109 which you can now get at the bar. I am not sure if that price went up or not, but perhaps they are putting too much care and love into the main dining room and forgetting the bar area, which on a Saturday night had one server. I really hope they can learn from this and bring market back to where it was before with already higher prices which people did not mind paying, but the service matched the price. On this night, it was a disaster at least for us.
