Opinions de Gonzalo's Restaurant El Paso
Me and my family have been coming here for a little over a year now. We have really enjoyed it everytime. They have wonderful food and great Margaritas. The service and atmosphere are always wonderful no matter if it is just the four of us or a large group of people like friends and family.
Loved the food during my first visit to El Paso! Nice to eat fresh when traveling. My limited Spanish meant they switched servers but the young man was super friendly. Great portions.
Authentic Mexican cuisine at reasonable prices. Their Pico de Gallo is a favorite because of the added avocado 🥑. Yum!
One of the best Mexican food restaurants. I used to eat there about once a week when I worked downtown. They are geared towards a heavy lunch crowd and close during the week at 6:00 p.m. The food has always been well prepared and the service has been congenial and fast.
Very nice place and the food is delicious
Had an excellent time, for my first of surely many times to come dining here... The staff were great and friendly, the food was wonderful. The owner (it's a family owned establishment) was even walking around, greeting guests and asking how everything was - I didn't know she was the owner until later: needless to say, I was super impressed!!
I have been to l&j cafe and Leo’s, very good restaurants This one had a better atmosphere The food was a bit better than them The owner was an amazing host The waiter we had was on his phone a bit and we had to get his attention to get small things the host waited on us more than the waiter that would be my only complaint Everything else was amazing Along with the price lots of value
I have a dairy allergy, and the manager, Patty, was very accommodating and super sweet! The food was very good. I wasn't a huge fan of the enchilada sauce, but the salsa made it very yummy. We also had a very large group, and our service was still excellent.
They marinate their chicken with Claudes! Hands down the best marinade in El Paso. Everything on the menu is delicious. This placed saved us during the freeze about a decade back. They stayed open and we were able to walk over for take out. Highly recommend
This is more of a Tex Mex Flavor restaurant. It's good food but needs more flavor to its food. Overall a good place to visit
Have been a loyal customer of this excellent restaurant for over 45 years and have never been disappointed. Still as good as ever and the service and staff always great. Had the #11 today, a chile con queso smothered hamburger steak. Absolutely perfect. Brother had his usual, a #21, a solid combination plate when you want a little of everything.
This place was great! Super friendly staff! Bonus points for allowing our pup to come in with us. We were traveling long distance and he was in tow. The food was great but the chicken enchiladas were a little dry. Very child friendly. Excellent experience
The food and service were great. It has a nice relaxing atmosphere, although we were there after the lunch rush. This was always one of my favorite places when I was in college. I hadn't been there for years but I stopped in for a late lunch with a friend and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. There is a reason why this place has been around for almost sixty years. Great food, great service, and reasonable prices. What more could you want?
This restaurant has some of the best Mexican cuisine I've had. It's hidden but the people there are very friendly and the atmosphere is fantastic.. large wooden chairs and tables, plants, and well spaced. Highly recommend
The food is delicious 😋 and the servers are very polite and even laugh with u about silly things 😜 the atmosphere is really relaxing. I recommend this restaurant.
Margaritas are muy bueno! I had cheese enchiladas, beans and rice. Enchiladas could use more cheese, beans and rice, unimpressive. My husband had a tampique. He liked the steak. Service is good, friendly. Reasonable prices.
The prices were reasonable, the service was great. The food, on the other hand, was simply delicious!!! I had chicken tacos and the shells were the lightest I have ever had, and this is my typical order at most Mexican restaurants. The salsa was scrumptious, and carefully watched by our waiter who brought us refills twice with out being asked. My husband was equally impressed with his chile rellenos. Don't miss this opportunity for a wonderful meal.
We had a great meal here. Very fun atmosphere and kid friendly. Staff are really, really helpful.
This restaurant has a way of making you feel like you are at your grandma's enjoying delicious food, surrounded by family. The staff is attentive, the food scrumptious and the overall vibe is upbeat. I recommend stopping by for a meal frequently! 😋
I've eaten plenty of tacos in my life, in many states (including different parts of Texas), and this place takes the lead by far! The most amazing tacos I've ever had! People say I can cook, and should open my own restaurant. Not with this restaurant around. They are killing the game. Whenever I get in the mood for tacos, this place is exactly where I'm getting them from. Absolutely delicious, and very fulfilling.
I got some kind of chocolate flan cake for dessert and it was simply exquisite. I wish I had taken a picture of it! It was flan on top and a moist milky chocolate cake on the bottom. I am just visiting town for a few days but I might go back for more of this cake because it was just that good. I also got enchiladas for dinner and they were good too.
I've been coming here since my dad first took me... 40 years ago? It can't be that long, can it??? The food hasn't changed much over the years. Good food shouldn't. This is authentic West Texas Mexican food, folks! Did I mention the classic lime Margaritas? No??? If you like an authentic classic Margarita THIS is one of but three places in town (that I personally know of) that still does it "the old way". Today I brought a friend whom has never been. He says he's bringing his wife over for dinner soon!
Great home town El Paso authentic Mexican food. Patty is a wonderfully sweet person and runs a special restaurant with a special welcoming feeling everytime we go there. Love the intimate "home" feeling and the location in central El Paso is great. Can't wait to eat there again and say "hi" to her!
Real Authentic Mexican Cuisine. My Wife recently made a trip to El Paso and had a chance to experience the wonderful food, service and atmosphere.
While on my way to noon mass after a doctor’s appointment, this restaurant was situated so that I couldn’t miss it, and I was hungry! I stopped, went in, and was immediately greeted by a friendly (I assume) owner. I was seated right away, handed a menu, and a waiter took my order. The food was fresh, hot, eying delicious! I will certainly return next month for another excellent lunch when I leave my doctor’s office - the chicken tacos were loaded with white meat and the taco shells were the best I’ve ever had! Salsa was tasty and they gave me a small container to take home to enjoy later! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is a lovely restaurant. The staff was incredibly kind and helpful. Family owned. The Chile Rellanos were fantastic. The chips and salsa were flavorful. Highly recommend this amazing local favorite.
Great price and great food. Had the beef salpicon and it was spot on despite being a little dmaller portion than expected.
We came to celebrate mothers day today and the service and good were great. Wonderful staff and delicious food. Please try!
The food has always been good. I've been going there for years. This time I had some cream cheese enchiladas with green sauce. 😋 They were good they are served with beans and rice. The rice was a little bit dry and kind of hard. The rice ruined my meal.
Good food, good price, highly recommend!
We had my Mom's Celebration of Life at G & R. Patty closed the restaurant for our private party. The family loved the food, great service. We were all together & fam from out of town want to come back. Thank you Patty & staff from the Flores/Ramirez Family.
Great food! Nice atmosphere! Amazing customer service!
I’m from idaho and was looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant. I heard great things about this place and decided it was worth the 3 mile walk from where I was staying. The restaurant was clean and the aesthetics were fun. The food was quick to come out and was some of the best Mexican food I have ever had. I recommend the long green pepper quesadilla and their chili relleno. The price was incredibly competitive and the portion size was large. I’ll be coming back.
Food, service and friends. Great combo.
These folks are like family. We've eaten here since I've had to look up to pick chilli. Thank you for all the years you've been part of El Paso.
This hidden gem of a Mexican restaurant is an absolute delight! Tucked away from the main streets, it delivers an authentic, home-cooked experience that rivals any big-name spot. The flavors are bold and fresh, the portions are generous, and the staff treat you like family from the moment you walk in. From the perfectly sauced enchiladas to the rice, it feels like it was made with love. It's the kind of place you almost want to keep secret—until you taste it and can’t help but tell everyone you know.
Loved the good and the ambience. They served us very well. Will definitely be coming back
Absolutely delicious food with great service. I was visiting from San Antonio and felt like I was eating back home! Thank ya’ll!
Just perfect. First time there. It wasn’t to bright inside. The food was fresh. Service was fast. Staff very friendly. Wasn’t load or over populated. It was perfect. I went at 3:50pm. Perfect place to try. Cheap also and plenty to eat. Fresh HOT SAUSE TOO. Best place in El Paso
Food was fantastic! Visiting from out of town for a funeral of a loved one and wish we had a place like this in my part of town. Definitely visiting again when back in town again.
the best service ever, the best food & great prices too. The inside of the restaurant is so quaint with lots of character. We got served right away too. So we were able to make It to the UTEP game in time.
Good food, nice place. Surprisingly they have parking spaces on the side. Small, hidden, cozy restaraunt.
Love this place. We booked it for a family party; service was great, everything was delicious and the place is cozy and festive. Great times!
Another great visit! The food is quick and excellent, even when variety plates are ordered. The chips and salsa are worth the trip alone. Waiters are exceptionally nice.
Used to eat here everyday in high school and there was a reason. Delicious, tasty food and great service. Hasn't changed and consistently great
My son Louie knows I like Chile Rellenos and took me to G&R restaurant not knowing that it belongs to the Rangel Family with my school girl neighbor Irene Rangel..not a single disappointment..The Chile Rellenos are simply delicious..the service great, atmosphere so relaxing…The manager was SUPER… for sure a relative..I was not disappointed and we are going back as soon as possible..Thank you Rangel family…a big treat…..🌺
Had the pleasure with wife and brother in law. Reasonably priced they had the Mexican plate , I had tacos 🌮 all happy to be in that part of town for sure 😋 second visit just as good as the first .
You gotta go on Wednesday! Gorditas Special! 3 and rice and beans only $7! Best horchata, and I love the combination plate with enchiladas tacos and Chile rellenos for only $13!!
Great restaurant lunch! Really a fun lunch experience. I only learned about the restaurant on Thursday last week, and I brought a new friend on Tuesday! The service is fast, with pleasant and professional servers. Patty is a hands on owner, and couldn't make us feel more comfortable! This lady is tops! All of this, AND the food was authentic and great! Thank you Patty and staff, we'll be back, soon!
Great family restaurant. Best kept secret are margaritas on the rocks. Great food especially red baked enchiladas. Family owned and staff very friendly. Great catering as well. Highly recommend. Oct 6 2023 Had lunch and have to admit they have the best chile rellenos. Also you have to try their flavored margaritas. Great service food always comes out nice and hot and above great tasting. Mar. 22, 2024 Hadn't been to gonzalos in a few months but had a craving for my favorite dish, the red cheese enchiladas. Never fails, the 👌 👍. If you're reading this, you have to try. Its the #4 on the menu.
I love this place. It's got beautiful interior design and a very comfortable atmosphere. The owner was friendly and the wait staff was fast and efficient. They were short staffed and still went above and beyond to make each guest happy. The Piccadilly burrito was perfectly seasoned and tasty
The food is fabulous. The place decor is cozy, colorful and charming. I love their comfortable chairs, and a soothing fountain in center of restaurant. I cant forget to add a Great bar in back which offers delicious Margaritas and other beverages of choice. They offer the best staff, sweet and attentive 100%. I have held several private parties here because the food is Authentic Mexican food ans Patty (owner) is insanely kind and accomodating.
Ate here with my family and had a great time. My wife thought her enchiladas were very good and I really enjoyed my chili reño and tacos. Our kids are pretty picky eaters but enjoyed the food as well. We got margaritas at the suggestion of my uncle and thought they were the highlight of the evening. We will definitely be going back to G&R!
First time going to Gonzalo’s and I was pleasantly surprised how homie the restaurant is. The servers were very nice and helpful when asking questions about the food. I got a mexican plate and my husband a gordita plate. It was good old fashion mexican food. I felt like I had gone to a family get together and all my tias cooked the food. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was a lady who was the manager or someone in charge scolding the employees loudly in front of the customers. It made me uncomfortable, very unprofessional. Honestly she could’ve said what she had to say a lot quieter and nicer. I’ll probably be back , hopefully that lady is in a better mood.
Gorditas sliders are excellent. Highly recommend. Always been a great place to stop by to eat when I'm in the area. Never disappointed. The only criticism is one person, guess manager, was annoyingly loud when she was greeting customers . Guess she was having a good time. Regardless, will visit again.
Salsa is always on point ! Food always delicious and fresh ! Staff always attentive . Never a bad dinner , and always a pleasant staff .
Food is delicious, I just think they were a little bit understaffed, the ladies were taking too long to refill our beverages and we asked several times for napkins and cutlery and they kept forgetting, overall the place was clean just the restroom could be a little cleaner, staff was friendly, food is very good I recommend mole and gorditas, but the one that took all the applause was the Salpicón, it is delicious!! overall I recommend it 😁
Surprisingly delicious! The quesadilla with long chile was really good, lots of melted cheesy goodness. Salsa was spicy enough, pretty decent. The kid waiting tables was friendly and attentive.
We tried several food items, and the food was OK The gorditas were really good, crispy, small, but had good taste. The restaurant was empty and remained empty while we were there, don't know why; lots of space to enjoy your visit. We got good service, maybe because there was no one there!
The food and the price were very good and the location has a really nice peaceful atmosphere. I would definitely come again.
Food was mediocre my fajita beef meat was very tough to chew. Sour cream was like water. Husbands enchiladas and chili renellos were not flavorful. Service not great either
The food was tasty. Staff was slow, we had to ask for refills of drinks, the gentleman sitting next to us had to get up to go find staff to get refill and ask where is food was. The decor was awesome.
Ate here with friends on a Saturday after attending a performance downtown.. 1st time we had been here in a long time. The service was good, the food quantity for my order was good. I thought their chilie with chips lacked flavor. I felt MY food lacked the flavor I'm used to. It WAS a nice, clean place, good service & reasonably priced
Food was okay, service was subpar. Had breakfast for a one time meeting.
I love the atmosphere, but our server was not in a good mood. He ever came back to take our order, we had to find someone. I didn't walk out because my mom loves mole and it was the special of the day. We ran out of beverage and never got refills, it wasn't busy so not sure why this happened. When we paid server wouldn't talk, we never got asked how are food was.
I've been before, but never again. The food was absolutely ordinary, certainly not something any one of a dozen restaurants locally couldn't have done much better, but the service was so lacking that had we not been exhausted from waiting we would have walked out. To add insult, we ordered a side of fries for a pair of picky children, two and four, the 'plate' came out last, over 10 minutes after the adult's food, and consisted of all of a dozen potato bits. A girl took our drink order and a request for 8 dollars worth of queso, that didn't show up until more than 45 minutes afterwards, a thin film of cheese punctuated by thick sliced raw onion and three corn tortillas (for four adults). I watched what seemed like the owners, a husband and wife couple who seemingly knew every single person in the establishment except for my party, exchange gossip, well tidings, and jokes for an extended period until I got up and bothered the bartender about getting someone serve us - which turned out to be himself. He eventually brought what looked to be canned leftovers out to us, so I called the female glad hander over and she seemed genuinely offended that a peasant like me would deign to complain, dismissing me. Unless you are an anointed family member or close confidant, I recommend you avoid this place as it is simply not worth the hassle finding parking or waiting hours for food that is made out of pure spite.
The salsa was basically tomato and onion, no heat at all. I had flautas that were ok but the guacamole was flavorless and the sour cream was watered down. Also, the beans were cold and rice crunched. My husband had mole. He had to send it back because it was cold and he likes his food lukewarm. He didn't care for the flavor of the mole. The water and coffee were good 👍
The food was just OK, nothing special and lacking flavor. I found a piece of mold or some old food at the bottom of my cup of water (after I had already drunk a lot of it). I told the staff when we paid our bill and added that it was pretty gross. They apologized but didn't even offer us a free drink. I wouldn't return to this place.
We came yesterday with our family, about 10 plus people. we chose this place based on recommendations, but even the person who recommended this place, said the food was not the same. We are talking about my tia who is very picky with food lol she said it was great the last time she came but this time it was disappointing. Food was bland with no flavor. I’m not a very picky person but this time I have to take the time and write a review. There goes hundred something dollars to plain food with no flavor. Y’all try it for yourselves, your experience may be different.
Most horrible experience, the forks were dirty with old food stuck to it, we asked for another and it was the same, waiter didn't care, he laughed it off, the wait was ridiculous almost 45 minutes, the rice was cold and and the portion was very little. We paid almost 40 dollars, for nasty silverware that was disgusting...don't eat there they want only the money, 😭😭😭😭
First time here. Two couples were there sitting down . Not to many people .Very disappointing the service wasn't was not good I got coffee drank most of it ,the server was on his phone instead . Buy the time I got my food I asked for more coffee . He still brought out the food out then brought the coffee afterwards. The food looked great until I ate some. I didnt finish my plate. The food had no flavor . Last time I go there.
Horrible take out experience. I ordered takeout from their online menu site. First the site charges a 4 dollar fee for pickup and requires a minimum tip of 15%, then we got there and they didn't have shrimp for the shrimp cocktail and couldn't take it off my order. They told me I had to go back online and do it myself. You can't do that on their site. Then they asked what else I would like to replace it. I ordered guacamole- not equal value mind you. When I got home most of the food was inedible. Rice and beans clearly had been cooked a long time before (dry and hard in spots). The enchiladas were burnt on the bottom and tasteless. And the overpriced guacamole has been put over old lettuce and couldn't be separated. This used to be a great neighborhood restaurant. I will never order from here again. Not for dine in or takeout!
Today October 18, 2022 I went with 2 more friends for lunch. We discovered they gave us tostadas that had already been served in another table. Gross 🤢 . This restaurant is not what used to be 30 years ago. The tacos were not good. I am not recommending this place much less going back.
Blend food like white people seasoning. No specials. Salsa was just watery. Not Mexican authentic flavor. Restaurant is cute thou, very small parking
I have no idea what happened to G&Rs. Ditto to Aimie Kern's takeout review. I ordered over the phone 2 orders of fajitas and 1 order of salpicon for my husband to pick up. All 3 orders should come with tortillas. No tortillas. Spoonful of guacamole on lettuce. No avocado on my salpicon and very little meat. Very tough dry meat on the fajitas. They did bring the missing tortillas to our house. Very nice. I have been coming here for decades and always had a good experience. Very disappointed in the food quality today.
Please read this review to the end...This restaurant is nothing to write home about. I first gave it a very GENEROUS two-star across because the food was lacking overall, not an authentic Mexican restaurant as other reviewers claim. I just changed it to a ONE STAR REVIEW. We ordered a #21 plate and one of their specialties: gorditas. (And please note that, on the menu, the gorditas are listed as one of the restaurant's specialties!! and not listed as "gordita sliders" as I just noticed on the website.) The #21 plate had a good chile relleno but the enchiladas were not made with homemade red chile. You could taste it came from a can. There was a taco in this plate which was passable. The gorditas were tiny and although they were supposed to be filled with picadillo, the filling was mostly potatoes. Can't say there was a significant amount of ground beef in there. Noticed that cumin was heavily used as a spice though. As for the rice, it was fully cooked but had absolutely no flavor and the beans were bland too. Salsas were watered down. The service was acceptable; I requested my coke with little ice and the waiter brought the drink with a full glass of ice, twice. As for the atmosphere in the restaurant, it felt old and outdated. I don't really see the "hacienda" atmosphere unless people refer to the inactive water fountain that is located in the middle of the restaurant and the fiesta/papel picado banners hanging all over. There is limited parking space on the side of the restaurant--which really would benefit from a quick repaving--and on the street. Did notice one handicapped space in the parking area. Would I recommend Gonzalo's to family and friends? Definitely NOT. And we will not be coming back either. It is certainly not what is depicted on the TV commercials. P.S. Out of curiosity, I have been reading the other reviews. Where do the people giving 4 and 5 stars eat that they give this restaurant such a high score? Don't they know what authentic Mexican food taste like? The atmosphere in a Mexican restaurant? Do they live under a rock? We are on the border! AND to top it off, I have read at least three reviews which claim this restaurant recycles their tostadas! This is absolutely gross and unacceptable! Hope the Health Department pays them a visit.
I've had bad service before, but this takes the cake. In a way, it was funny with Karen (owner) ramping on that they were trying. Chicken soup was nothing but vegetable soup with shredded chicken on top of it. Caldo de res was more like a child's plate with four pieces of vegetables and two small (very small) pieces of meat. The owner spilled soup on my arm while arguing and still charged for all plates, including the ones that were returned. Used to be a good place to eat, NO MORE!!
Steak, chicken, pastor was delicious but I just didn’t like how they forgot to bring cilantro, onions, spicy salsa, lemon for my tacos like all the good ingredients that go for the tacos and the beans were cold! Never been to a place where they served me cold meals, service was friendly what I didn’t like was that it seems like the owner of the place was drinking with other people when I payed for my food I complained and she nicely apologized by the way. Very nice person but not very professional to be drinking in front of the costumers…
The food isn't what it used to be years ago, and service was not great either. Restaurant and atmosphere are nice, but I hate to say the food and service need improvement.. it's definitely changed. It's a shame and I don't think we'll be going back . I used to recommend this restaurant but I won't anymore. Please management look into it and fix it...
Arrived at 930 I'm the morning after they opened. Asked for 2 drinks. Paper napkin was in one of the drinks, when I showed the waiter the napkin in the drink. He asked did u want me to take it out or u want another one? I asked for another one and when food was brought out. Tacos ordered were cold except where they were dipped in the oil. Still tasted like the fridge they were in. Huevos rancheros had no flavor or spice. Disappointed for all the hype. Would not recommend. It's sad. This place was once a good place to take people to.
