Opinions de Sue's Kitchen El Sobrante
I have had plenty of Thai/Laos food, with some favorites. Therefore, I believe my experiences meet the requirements to post a review. Without any biases, Sue's Kitchen is AMAZING!!! If I had a microphone, yes it would have been dropped. A must try, the Onion Rings and Calamari (yes it's fried, what did you think?). Any time I go to a 'new-to-me' Thai restaurant, I get the Pad Thai and Spicy Basile Chicken. Great dishes to use as a measuring rod. In my loud voice, "OUTSTANDING" !!! This is just the beginning of my journey through Sue's menu. Hope to see you along the way!!!
Really cozy atmosphere and friendly service. Food is delicious, very flavorful and portions are very generous. Will definitely be back.
We love Sues. Very consistent and always fresh ingredients. Love their fried rice and fried chicken.
Definitely my favorite for laotian in the entire bay area! Staff is super friendly
Gosh all the food here is good including the Thai Ice Tea, their Phos soups is one the best in the Bay area. It gets busy but service is fast and friendly. Try it you'll like it.
Easily the best mom and pop restaurant within walking distance of work. Flavorful, fresh, friendly, fast. The Nam Khao is my favorite, but chicken satay, a side of fried rice, and a Thai iced tea really do a great job of hitting the spot. A regular place in our rotation.
My favorite Thai food spot ever! The yellow curry with tofu and bbq chicken are regular staples for my husband and I. We have never had a sub par meal here. It is excellent every time and usually not very crowded. Parking can be an issue though.
Honestly the only place I've been to in the Contra Costa area that serves delicious Thai green curry and Tom kha. All the other places taste thin. Like they're not using real coconut milk. Or maybe a lower fat version? All I know is I stopped really eating Thai food in the East Bay until I found this place. So yummy! Worth going out of the way
Been driving by on Appian Way 15 minutes from home for the past few years. I saw a review on Check, Please. Worth it. We were in SF for 25 years - this is as good as our favorite Thai restaurants in the City. The Beef Panang was subtle and incredible; the tom ka gai was very complex; the green curry shrimp just as awesome. Highly recommend this place for its food - the best in the north east Bay, absolute!!!
The food here is PHENOMENAL. The service is so kind and quick! I highly recommend this place for anyone wanting to try Thai food. Everything here is delicious. And you cant beat the prices either! Great service, large portions, low prices. Definitely worth stopping by!
We’ve crossed bridges just to get this. It’s definitely better dine in than takeout. Best Pad Thai and Thai Iced Tea in Bay Area. Chief’s special is insane if you eat it fresh but gets soggy for takeout. I always crave their Yum Woon Sen. They use quality meat here and the portions are super generous.
Simple restaurant. Superb food. Hidden gem. Fragrant, flavorful dishes.
Love this family owned restaurant! I've been coming here for years, and they never disappoint. They are consistent and tasty. Every single dish. I fully support this restaurant. I use to live close and went at least one a week now I'm 45 minutes out & wishing they had one closer to me cause I have to drive a good 45 minutes to get here but I gladly do it when I can. Prices have gone up, but that is to be expected. They are still delicious, so it's totally worth it 💝
Came here on a long trip home with my wife and had one of the best Thai food in the area! Highly recommend if your searching for a good Thai place! Owner is welcoming and makes sure you are taken care of!
Hole in the wall Thai spot. Hella good.... Do you like Thai food? Do you like Laotian food? Well, what are you waiting for? I promise you will love it!!!!
Good food every single time. We always order 4-5 things and call our friends to see if they want us to pick them up anything since we live an hour out. Easily the best price for the best tasting legit Thai and Lao food (my wife is Lao and my family is Thai) with family sized large portions. Service is always friendly. It's always a treat to go. Don't miss out on this treasure.
Surprisingly good find in an unexpected area. Went for a late lunch, got very tasty dishes. Tried their "moo young," "nam kao," and "panang curry." Service was reasonably quick, dishes had a lot of flavor, Thai iced coffee was rich. Will return. Parking lot is on a steep hill and getting out of there will require a bit of special maneuver to get back onto the street. Watch your bumper when leaving.
Came here last night for the first time with my family. I haven’t been here but my family has. Sue’s kitchen is the most underrated restaurants you’ll ever come across to. There food is authentic and you can taste the flavors as how much they represent the Laotian and Thai cuisine combined. For appetizers, We ordered the chicken satay, wings, and calamari. I forgot to snap a pic of the wings because it was too good as I glazed it with the sauce it came it. For mains, we got crab fried rice and chicken pad Thai. The food is great. Lastly, we had their coconut ice cream with fried banana. It was something different for a change, and I liked it. The restaurant got busy after we left and I’m glad more people came. Service was good, not a disappointment in sight! Thank you!
Best Tom kha kai ever! Have tried numerous places, but this place is perfect. Lots of fresh independence, not too spicy, good coconut flavoring and the soup base is well balanced. Other dishes, like pad thai, is excellent 👌 too.
Ordered the chicken larb, yum woon sen & thai iced tea. The larb was tasty. Full of flavor. The yum woon sen was tasty also, but a little dry this time around - nonetheless, still flavorful & yummy. Will definitely be back to try other dishes. Staff was friendly, efficient and helpful. Can't go wrong if you want authentic Thai/Lao food. This was a "to-go" order.
Been coming here since I was a kid, now I have my own kid and we come here all the time. There's nothing on the menu that doesn't taste good everything tastes delicious we are never disappointed. The staff are always friendly and accommodating. My personal favorites from the menu are nam kao, panang curry, and chefs special, but you can't go wrong with whatever you order. I always get a side of fish sauce with chili everytime I come too :) thanks to the amazing staff for making all this deliciousness possible 💖
This is a nice restaurant that kind of has a quaint, nostalgic vibe. The atmosphere here is always pleasant with the servers offering quick and friendly service.
Staff was amazing and food was incredible! My first time eating Thai/Lao food and I was born away! My dish was amazing. So many veggies and the broth/gavy was so mouthatering that I couldnt stop eating it. Five stars to Sue and her kitchen. Y'all are amazing folks for sharing your wonderful food with us.
Always always my favorite place to be. The food is delicious, the staff is quick to seat you and get you your food.

This cozy Laotian eatery hidden away in the back of a mini mall serves a tasty mix of Thai and Laotian dishes. Thorough satisfaction upon trying something new every visit. The menu includes items often not seen elsewhere, including unique noodle soups and a variety of vegetarian dishes. The pad krapow seafood was sautéed to perfection, with yummy basil sauce, green beans, peppers and bamboo shoots. Yum Goong shrimp salad, savory and lemongrass forward. Fried chicken and fried rice platter, spiced comfort. Kao Soy and Tom Yum Goong noodle soups, classic. Looking forward to coming by again.

I found this place from Check Please Bay Area and it did not disappoint. Best Laos meal and very homey. It is a hidden gem!
We picked up take out yesterday for the first time and it was as good as everyone has been telling me! I am taking the time to write the review because, due to a health issue, I need vegetables cooked a specific way and they were very accommodating. On my order I wrote my needs, my food arrived exactly how I described. I cannot thank you enough. We will be ordering from Sue's again!
Go to place for Thai/Laotian food. Good quality dishes and reasonably priced.

Whether you’re a local or just passing through, Sue’s Kitchen is a must-visit. It’s the kind of place that keeps you coming back for more, and I can’t recommend it highly enough!
The food here was good and the portions are huge. It's the portion size that makes up for the little things (my steamed mixed vegetables were a little firmer than ideal). My friend and I had 2 soups, Tofu appetizer, 2 dishes from the vegetarian menu, and I ordered a side of steamed vegetables. This meal was over 6 months ago so I can't remember exactly what we ordered, but I do remember how it made me feel. It's a no frills spot, so perfect for eating with family, friends, and loved ones. I saw some couples and a few families with kids. Everyone was just happily eating. Very budget friendly, especially since if you over order you'll have tasty leftover for the next day. Looking forward to going back when I see my friend again this spring.

Solid experience coming here with my family. Prices are cheap, but food + quantity are definitely there. The dish with the lettuce wrap and ham-based filling is one of the best. Some people may consider the dishes too sour overall, but I enjoyed it thoroughly.
The food and service are always wonderful in my experience, looks like they have no staffing. The waitress are very polite and friendly. Over all my go to for quick dine in or order for pick up on my busy evening. I am glad to say the least to have good Lao/Thai close in my area.
A rare local gem. Recommend Stir fry flat noodle.
I've been coming here since they opened. This almost-hidden restaurant should be in the middle of downtown. The food is great, and the price point used to be great, but since they sold to a new owner, prices are average. The food isn't overly 'heavy' or oily, yet very flavorful. It's gotten so popular over the years, so be prepared at wait a bit for a table. The driveway is very steep, so come in at an angle, or use a taller car. I don't think I've had much difficultly finding parking. CV update: you know this place is super good because the folks that come here have a very difficult time deciding what to get. No joke, some lady took 15 min just picking what to order. Update: The food isn't what it used to be. The noodle dishes are a bit on the bland side. The stir fry noodles tend to stick into a clump.
i ordered the spicy kao soy to go. portion was great. the soup was a bit too oily for my liking but it was good nonetheless
I ordered the crab fried rice and fried chicken. It was very good but the prices there are a little pricey. I would like to go back and try more of their menu.
Our "go-to" spot for REAL|Authentic Lao-Thai food..We ordered our usual dishes...Tonight, we ordered the Chicken Larb (Medium Spicy & Extra Sour) and the Shrimp Yum Woon Sen (also Medium Spicy & Extra Sour)...+ Thai Iced Tea...You can't go wrong ordering these two dishes here...The staff is always nice and accommodating...You probably think why I didn't give this business a 5-star rating due to my raving comments?...To be honest, no business is perfect regardless of the service and/or products they provide...If you are in the area, please do drop by...If you like Authentic Lao-Thai food, you'll be in for a treat...Again, your experience with "authenticity" may be "different"...The spices will open up your nostrils and clear your allergies! 😁

Tried this 3 times. There in dinning service isn’t very good, meaning food is brought out when it’s ready. We ordered appetizers, but they came out after our meals were already brought out. Also meals are brought out at different times, so one of us just say while we waited for the other to get there food. FYI the fried chicken wings have absolutely no seasoning on them, not even salt.
The food here use to be great, now it seems like it's missing something... Ordered the chicken wings and fried rice and for $12-$14 only got 4 wings and they were small portions, the Pad Ke Mao was undercooked and the eggplant dish was missing a factor in taste. Its been a long time since I've been there but when I went back I ordered what I use to get and it wasn't the same.
Saw the restaurant and decided to try it out. Food was good. The servers were not friendly.
I ordered a Pad Thai and Paneng chicken . Pad Thai noodles was over cooked , and was blunt , paid for extra veg , what I got was two broccoli and two slices of carrot . The chicken curry was tasty and fresh, I would recommend trying out this restaurant as it’s a local business and food didn’t felt like too commercial . I will for sure try something else later on

This place has consistently raised their prices to the point of - u r paying too much!! Portions of food served has been downsized - to the point of what they r charging for their tiny portions are not worth your money. Sometimes the workers give a blank stare as u enter - no greetings - rude. No longer will pay for overpriced food that is reduced in portion size.
First time I am ordering from this restaurant. I called the restaurant and it took them a while to answer. I told the young gentleman who answered that I didn't have a menu so I will need his help to order. I wanted to order eggplant in basil with ground pork, but I ended up ordering beef since they don't sell pork meat at this restaurant. The other dish I ordered was Masaman curry with chicken. The order taker was in such a hurry to get me off the phone that he forgot to ask me the spice level of the food and that all the entries come with Jasmine rice and also forgot to provide my total. When I arrived, there were a few cars parked outside, one of the workers was sitting on a chair in front of the restaurant on his phone. I walked inside got my food and was looking forward to a tasty meal after reading all those reviews. I was not impressed with the food packaging, they overfilled the curry container instead of using a bigger one and it spilled as soon as I opened the lid. The curry was too runny for my taste and not enough flavor. The basil eggplant was not what it's supposed to be, it just didn't have the flavor and texture that I have come to expect.
We ordered $50 worth of food today at Sue's Kitchen. The fried chicken wings were overcooked, dried out and inedible. The fried wings and rice dish consisted of 4 half pieces of chicken (2 whole wings) and a serving of fried rice which had no taste totaling approximately $17. The Pad See Ew was dried out, gummy and tasteless and had little to no chicken or broccoli in the dish. Unfortunately, we ended up tossing most of the food in our recycle bin. What has happened to what used to be one of the few restaurants in El Sobrante that had consistently good food? Sadly to say that we will not be returning to Sue's Kitchen again.
