WOW!!! The food is amazing, the atmosphere is great, and the service is great but could be a little quicker, but the server was really friendly. We ordered fish and chips and a taco salad. The fish was awesome and big pieces, more fish than batter and flavorful. The hush puppies were the best I ever had. When the food came out, we were like, "WOW!! That's a lot of food. " It's nice when a restaurant chain follows its promise, about quality... very rare. The taco salad was nice, the deep fried taco shell was really good, crispy and not oil which was a good surprise. I'd definitely recommend family and friends to go here. I just wish they had more chicken or turkey options available for breakfast.

Wonderful place. I was not feeling well and as a result, not that friendly. The waitress tried to read me and did her best! She was patient and helped me through my order from finding the menu (It was right in front of me), to keeping our drinks filled up to going the extra mile for these 2 picky kids, to taking time out to make sure we were good, and we had our boxes, and so on. She really locked it down!! Food: So much food, per plate! On point on point on point! Hot, fresh, and delicious!!

Black Bear Diner is a breakfast staple in Elk Grove. While I prefer to go places that are locally owned, the food, service and pricing are all decent here. The kids meals are under $5– huge portions and my kids love them! My husband loves their Chicken Fried Steak— that portion is the biggest I’ve ever seen! And the Benedict Special I tried was pretty good. The service is very quick, the restaurant is clean, and there is ample parking.

As always it was a good choice. Only issue wad our server only came back one time half way through our meal. It was the only time I've experienced this at this location. Otherwise I would recommend this restaurant to others.

Cute diner with big portions. Great service and fun theme I don't think I'd do the waffle again because most of the middle was a soggy flat bear paw shape that was cute but not a waffle. Should have gotten a pancake It was cold inside but otherwise comfortable

Stopped here for some breakfast. Service was okay. Ordered the big bear chicken fried steak with potatoes and eggs and pancakes on the side. All was good except the pancakes, they were dry and thick. The peppermint hot chocolate was really good though.

Went here around 9pm. Restaurant closed at 10pm. We ordered coffee, all meat omellete with hash brown and a hamburger with onion rings. The food was good. Service was good. All the employees were busy cleaning and ready to go home. Our server gave us free coffee to go because he doesn't want to waste a batch. Gave only 4 star because one of the employee started vacuuming near our table. We were fine for her vacuuming the other areas with no customers but she went on vacuuming near us while we were eating. We understand that they were about to close but we just wanted to have a good, quiet, and dust free meal.

Calm and quiet evening. Waitress was friendly and patient. Food was good, lots of options to choose from. Table condiments were low or out so had to grab from the next table.

I love the food here. Large portions. Very friendly. Best place for some comfort food. Update 6/25 Went here for lunch and was extremely disappointed . The food quality it deteriorating. The salmon was extra fishy smelling and white . Onion rings burnt until there was no onion, and my side of ranch was so thick with giant chuncks of bacon you couldn't dip in it. The best thing I can say is the server was nice.

Come here for the food, not for the service. Maybe I should go and try other locations. The server was quite rude hence our experience here was terrible. We had questions about the menu but didnt want to listen, she kept asking how we want our eggs. Its a shame, we like Black Bear Diner.

Update: I feel the need to add some positivity to my review after communicating with the general manager, Mayra. It's not often we encounter restaurants that value customer experiences and try to remedy the situation. At first I was hesitant to reach out, but I am pleasantly surprised. They seem to really care about their customers. Thank you. Got delivery and no joke...I am currently waiting for the country potatoes from both dishes to COOK in my OVEN. What a waste of $72, still ended up cooking anyways. The potatoes were so hard and bitter, you would think they plated them raw. The only thing EDIBLE in my order were the biscuits and gravy. Never ordering here again.

I frequent Black Bear diners when ever visiting friends in different cities as they typically do not disappoint. This was a terrible experience at the Elk Grove Ca location. We were seated in a booth where the seat looked like it had been slashed with a knife; and the vinyl fabric scratches as you try to move across the cushion. We only noticed condition of seats after the host abruptly walked away. As i was trying to see what side of table would work best for my friend who had a injured foot and wearing a surgical boot.Then the waitress came over to take our order. I asked if I could have honey with my coffee. My friend ordered lemonade. She brought the drinks but not the honey nor did she acknowledge she forgot it and walked away. I was resolved just to drink the coffee black, but when I picked up the mug the handle was sticky. I placed the coffee to edge of table and as she walked past our table, I guess that clued her to fact that she forgot the honey. When she came back with the honey, I told her the mug had something sticky on handle. She brought over another coffee, it was lukewarm. Our meal was delivered and I started to eat the eggs first. I ordered them over medium but they were over easy. We waited for her to come back and in the interim , I began eating the other items so those items did not get cold. Time passed and my friend , caught her attention and was able to wave her down and let her know my eggs were not cook correctly. She offered to bring more eggs but I declined since most of my meal was almost finished ; and I hate to ask food to be redone for obvious reasons. She returned to table with an order of cooked eggs and ask me how were the other eggs because she could tell since they had been broken open and spread across the plate. Then she said, I only ask "because most people don't know how to order their eggs." I told her the eggs white as well as yolks were not cooked. Then I informed her, I know how I wanted my eggs...with egg whites cooked and yolk slightly cooked; she stated yes. At this visit, we were never offered refills on our beverages or water, never offered extra napkins and had to request straws. I was deflated at this point and my friend was mad for me noting of the two meals I purchase, one was incomplete. Maybe more training is needed for waitress Baily; and the manager should have never let staff use booths in such poor condition.

Great atmosphere but poor quality food. The place seemed good and for some reason the ratings are quite good but the consensus from the 5 of us was that it wasn't worth it. As you can see from the pictures, $127 for 5 very simple meals (and 2 sodas) is simply too much, especially for the quality. Unfortunately I cannot recommend.

Went to order breakfast this morning and once again the chicken fried steak breakfast meals are not available to order online through their site or the delivery services.

11/26/25 7pm-9pm Restaurant wasn't busy at all We got sested right away Waitress great ✔️ Food, not so. Burger was blah cold inside the patty. Fried chicken burnt outside ,frozen inside. Fries, soggy. All frozen foods ,reheated. And not recooked well We where with a crowd and didnt want to complain or ruin the good time we had.. So we just drank the tea. Not the first time food was crap.. visited 4months prior and pancake breakfast / service was crap. West Sacramento BBD is better

Showed up with a group of 14 friends visiting from out of state and they did not have any seating available for our group which is fine cause we said we could sit at different tables but they said it would be an over 1 hour wait. We sat and waited for 15 minutes and in that time we saw multiple small groups of 1 and 2 people getting seated at tables that could fit 6 people. My spouse stated that she had had a similar experience at a Black Bear with her families the past. I don't think I will be trying to seek out a Black Bear to have a meal at anytime soon in the future.

where do I start its a Saturday at 1240pm we got seated it was not busy at all sat in the back was just my kids and i 8 year old and a 17 year old . we placed our drink order then waited.... and waited ... and waited i kid you not i wanted and should of left it was over 20 minutes right when i was about to take off waitress comes with drinks and takes our order 110pm i ordered the country fried steak and eggs with hash browns and pancakes my son ordered a burger and my daughter ordered chicken fingers with fries pancakes and a sundae.. and then the wait started again . i kid you not it took almost 40 min they brought half the food out then 10 minutes later the rest but no sundae... food was bland burger was good my son said but hes a vacuum cleaner and eats anything . my daughter wanted her sundae and nothing waitress only showed up after 30 minutes then i said bring me the check and her sundae she left and came back again after 20 min.. i never seen anything like this ever . i left that useless server a $5 tip but honestly i wanted to leave her nothing the restaurant was empty a staff was full... Should of went to ihop prices here are insane overpriced . i would not recommend which sucks since it was good before but i haven't eaten here in over 8 years .
