I’ve been eating GTE for years - since the popups at Eat Real fest and First Fridays, so I was super excited to see they opened a brick and mortar around the corner from me. I finally got a chance to try the new restaurant and their food is even better than I remembered, and the ambiance is great too. We got the golden kimchi, chicken/basil dumplings and spicy noodles, and they were all 10/10. Their menu does change frequently, though. I look forward to them expanding their hours and to keep coming back here for years to come.
Simply put - incredible food in a lovely new space. All the staff are so friendly and welcoming, it felt like eating dinner at a friend’s place. The flavors of each dish were rich and bright, and everything tasted superbly fresh. Loved the ambiance of both the indoor and outdoor seating. Can’t wait to come back again soon!!!
Loved this place since they were located inside original pattern brewery in Jack London Square. So delicious everytime. The chef is creative and and talented. Every dish I have here has so much care put into it. I always say to my partner, mark my words its only a matter of time before GTE completely pops off and we will need to wait in long lines to eat here. And we would still wait because we love it that much.
My native Bay Area foodie mind was BLOWN! We were first in line and ordered the entire menu. Sat in the “backyard” at a nice big table. We came on a Wednesday. Favorite dishes- kimchi- a new flavor you haven’t tasted! spicy noodles had the perfect chew and flavor! The fried chicken was a wow! The daily veggie dish was so tasty. If you come with one person or many, order everything!!!!! And share. Our servers were on point, authentically kind and knowledgeable about the food. We met the owner Angie. Overall, this restaurant is NEW- and open only 3 days a week. All good is made in small batches and it’s farm to table ingredients. The quality is clearly there in all of their dishes which change each day: The environment of the backyard garden feel, makes you feel like you are at Angie’s house. It has such positive vibes. I can’t wait to go back. Bravo and 5 stars! -Emma and Guri 7/20/22
It is AMAZING what Tony and Angie have done with their new location in Emeryville. GTE is the place I ate the most this year, as their menu always changes and is always fantastic. From the moment you walk in, it's like being in a friend's kitchen. The staff is SO friendly; you can tell they care about making GTE a wonderful place to enjoy delicious Taiwanese food. Speaking of the food, I always get the spicy noodles and the veggie of the day (more often than not sourced from the equally wonderful Radical Family Farms), and a dumpling! Then I add whatever new dish Tony has cooked up. I've never had a dish I didn't like. TIPS: Check their instagram for Saturday hours. If you get invited to one of their festival/backyard parties, go! They also cater! Overall, my experience at Good to Eat Dumplings was top-notch. The food was delicious, the service was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was cozy and inviting. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone in the Emeryville area looking for delicious dumplings and other Chinese dishes.
I've been here several times, and this is the first time I've seen eggplant noodle on the menu. This was the best thing I have eaten since coming back from Vietnam. I was going to get it again the next day but it's gone from the menu now 😭 Edit: it's on the menu again and I've been eating it twice a week OML The fried chicken is also so good, juicy and flavorful. I was about to burst but I could not stop eating.
There are so many good things I could say about this place. From the food, to Chef Tony and Angie who run the show, to the welcoming atmosphere, Good to Eat is a must! I had the privilege to work for Good to Eat when it was a part of Original Pattern and I’m so happy to see their success in the brick and mortar. Everything we ate here was incredible. The standout was the golden kimchi, the heirloom tomatoes and soy ginger, the fu-ru chicken, and the spicy noodles. Both of the pocket dumplings were amazing too. Not to mention the perfect OP beer to pair with everything. The attention to detail from the flavors to the plating made this an amazing experience. I highly recommend coming with a group so you can enjoy and share multiple dishes. The service was wonderful as well, and overall, just such a welcoming and great time. I can’t wait to come back and I am already dreaming about that golden kimchi. 🏵 Thank you Angie and Chef Tony for your contribution to the Bay Area community. You both are wonderful people who deserve all the success. Cheers to Good to Eat! 🍻
We had a really good vegetarian meal here, with eggplant, fried tofu, green beans and garlic and rice and then soft serve with special seasonal strawberries to finish. Delicious!
The food may look simple but the taste is excellent! What really stood out about this place for me was the service. Waitress was really knowledgeable about every single item on the menu and constantly made sure we were attended to. Food came out hot and quickly, it was like a well-oiled machine. The manager also went around and checked on everybody. Dog-friendly in the back patio area. Street parking is free on the weekends. Will definitely be returning!
Portions were on the small size but very delicious. Our party of 3 had sizzling eggplant noodles with chili sauce. My son who does not like eggplant tried it and decided he would eat that eggplant again. The sauce was great over white rice. Also had grilled bok choi, sautéed peanuts fried chicken and spicy noodles. Service was efficient. Lighting was bright which made seeing the delicious food easy; it also highlighted the cleanliness of the restaurant. My husband and son would have liked it less bright but then we saw the abundant outdoor seating which was more atmospheric. We all said we would eat there again especially since its close to home.
Amazing food! Been several times now, and tried multiple new things each time. Everything is so good! The grilled pineapple is maybe my favorite. It’s basically dessert. The service is top notch. Today we started outside and asked to move inside halfway through our meal and the staff helped move everything without any fuss. They couldn’t be more patient and helpful and they know the food so well! Every recommendation we’ve receiving from staff has been a hit with our group! This is quickly becoming our new favorite restaurant in the east bay.
Simply amazing. It adds just enough "twist" to the food to make it uniquely delicious, yet maintain the authenticity of Taiwanese cuisine. I can't believe they had Yam leaves! And made well! The Lu Rou Fan was a bit different than in Taiwan, but equally delicious. The noodles, yam fries, and fried tofu were all very 道地. It's not a cheap place but the food was worth it. Any Taiwanese person has to try this place!
The food, the ambiance, the service and the plates were are top notch. They had an amazing selection of beers and sake. We opted for non alcoholic beverages and the teas and drinks were very good. I was especially happy with the special of the day which was tempura with fennel, radish and nardello peppers. The dessert needed work and was not to the level of the savory dishes.
I’m Taiwanese and tbh this place isn’t the most authentic, but it totally has those Taiwanese food vibes (everything looks pretty plain but packs a lot of flavor, and those sweet and savory dishes). I really enjoyed everything and would for sure come back! Special shoutout to the fu-ru fried chicken—so good 🤤🤤🤤
Everything was so good. The wait was not super long when we got here at 8pm on a Friday night. They even let us order some drinks and wait in the waiting area with fire pits. Food was phenomenal, even as simple as the yam leaves stir fry. I'll come back!
Visited around 5:30 PM on a Thursday. The place had a good crowd inside, but I found the outdoor seating with heaters more appealing due to the chilly weather. The order-at-the-counter system was efficient. I went for a variety of dishes: dumplings, the day's vegetable special, cheesecake, fried chicken, eggplant noodles, and almond tea. The food quality was impressive. Everything tasted fresh, and dishes marked as spicy had the right kick. The fried chicken was a highlight, especially with its unique, house-fermented vegetable side. What stood out was the front-of-house service - professional, attentive, and genuinely kind, which isn't something you find everywhere. The cheesecake was light and flavorful, a must-try. The fried chicken, juicy and well-seasoned, was another winner. I'd happily order both again. The prices are a bit high, and portions are more on the small side, but the overall quality makes it worth a return visit. This might be one of the top Taiwanese restaurants I've been to.
Definitely a meal you will not forget! Tons of vegetarian options that will make your mouth water. Great balance of sweet and spicy. The oyster mushrooms are by far one of the best mushroom dishes I have ever had and the kimchi is amazing. The owners and staff will take moments to talk about the dish or two, that personal touch really make it feel special and you can tell how much they care about their craft. Definitely don’t pass this place up!
Don't miss it on this place if you are in the area. AND don't skip the desert. Best cheese cake ever. Very friendly service and energetic atmosphere.
With a regularly updated pan-Chinese menu, the Numbing Fried Chicken stands up to this fashionable Taiwanese restaurant’s namesake. Thigh meat, well-battered and fried, with a flavor-packed dipping sauce that draws more from the numbing than spicy quality of ma la seasoning. Great for groups paying Dutch as orders are taken at the counter. Excellent option when in West Berkeley.
We came here on a double date and everyone was super impressed! I was so happy with how many vegan options they had, nice selection of beers and drinks, cool desserts. They constantly change their menu so it will always be something new to try! The patio space is so beautiful.
One of the best meals I’ve ever had! Each dish was surprisingly good tasting, good looking and interesting. Service was great, friendly, enthusiastic and accommodating. Very nice space as well, immediately upon stepping in I had a great feeling. Just a bit loud, but that’s because we were next to a very vocal table. I’ll definitely go back and try everything else on the menu that we didn’t get the chance this time, although I also want to get the same things again.
Everything is great here. One of those places you keep coming back to and take all your visits to try. Have not tried anything that I don’t like. I will especially recommend the Fu Ru Chicken. The glazing is refine and out of this world. The braised pork is also cook to perfection. There are places that undercook or overcook it but here they get it just right. It’s the perfect amount of fat as well. I could keep going but just go and try it yourself!

great food and super unique menu, with new specials every day! but don’t worry they keep a lot of the staples on their regular menu too. be forewarned that they have limited hours, only dinner on certain days, and they will fill up!

I have been enjoying Good to Eat since their start at the brewery as a pop up. The food there was consistently incredible for a brewery pop up, and the service was friendly and kind even through masks. After taking a peek in the kitchen, it was wild to see that such high end food was coming from a room with folding tables, a fridge, electric hook ups, and immense skill empowered by big dreams. Since opening in emeryville, Angie and Tony have created a space with an exceptional sense of service, purpose, and self with an atmosphere of full welcome and deep appreciation for guests. I relish tasting dishes I have had 5+ times and noting the small tweaks and changes as they continue to refine their vision. As I leave the bay for the east coast, GoodToEat will be among my cherished last stops to thank Angie and Tony for what I have learned about Taiwan, for creating a sense of home even for those of us without ties to the country, and for sharing such thoughtful experiences around flavor. Many cheers to you and continued success in these hard times, to a team fueled by passion, humble pride, and love for hospitality.
My favorite are the standing classics of the pepper numbing chicken ($22) with their special sauce which I always say they should bottle and sell . And the spicy GTE noodle for $9. I’ve come here since they first opened and these dishes are consistently always tasty. And cost effective and huge Return on value! They have new dishes they often debut and rotate so you have to decide if you want to experiment. Sometimes they aren’t always to my taste but some are wonderful. The owners and staff are always so kind and friendly and lovely. It’s very relaxing to come here and eat!

Owned and operated by chefs, they specialize in Taiwanese classics with a modern twist. We sat at the bar next to the kitchen and enjoyed a lowkey Michelin-esque experience watching the organized chaos unfold before we ate. As pescatarians/mostly vegetarians, we had the tofu skin (dou bao), spicy noodles (not pictured), maitake noodle in a creamy fermented tofu sauce, and green beans. The dou bao and spicy noodles were so simple but flavorful and interesting in very good ways (texture of the dou bao! the chewiness of the noodles with the zing of garlic with a punch of mild spicy!). Green beans hit like they do at your typical mom and pops shop. And sadly, the maitake noodles were so overpowered with green onion it was hard to taste much else. At about $100 for two including a beer and tips, etc, it was mostly worth it - overall a nice date night experience. I’d definitely return but maybe avoid the maitake dish next time.
Went here with a friend, or at least only a friend when the night started… Good To Eat was good but imperfect in a few ways. To focus on the positives: the fried tofu block with Tàishi Pàocài was perfection. What I imagine little drops of heaven taste like 🥰. The eggplant noodles were good, we had mixed opinions on the noodles—very good or slightly under cooked depending on who you ask; the eggplant had a unique flavor profile that was unexpected and eggplant lovers will love 🍆🤤. It ended up being a fun night 😉 One less pleasant part of the experience was the wait time and lack of reservation system for small parties. We waited about 10 min to check in, then waited in the back for 15 min, then finally got to our table and only ordered 5 min later. The food came out in only 10 min, but gosh I felt like I was a freight train 🚂 being schleped around like that.
We found this Taiwanese restaurant and decided to give it a try. We had the Lu Rou Fan, Taiwanese Sesame Noodles, and the Whole Squid "Yi-Ye-Gan" (一夜干). The Lu Rou Fan, braised pork over rice, was alright. But I preferred a richer, stickier texture from slow-cooked pork skin collagen. The Taiwanese Sesame Noodles tasted good, it has a really well-balanced flavor between sesame sauce and Sichuan peppercorn and chili, but it leaned slightly towards the sweeter taste. The standout of the meal was Whole Squid "Yi-Ye-Gan", it grilled to a perfect texture, and the flavor was on point. Highly recommended! Overall, I feel their classic Taiwanese dishes are enjoyable, but the restaurant leans more toward a fusion and fine dining style, which is a bit pricey in my opinion, and doesn't quite capture the feel of home-cooked style.
Food: High quality Taiwanese dishes that are hard to find elsewhere in the East Bay. Some dishes felt too small given the price and what they were (e.g. noodles). We didn't over order, but were on the threshold of still feeling somewhat hungry. Service: There could be improvements to the efficiency of the seating service. We waited close to half hour to get seated even though there were a lot of open tables. Once seated the service and speed at which the food came was good.
Some of the most lovely service I've ever had. Very inquisitive and informative staff who clearly wanted to ensure we enjoyed ourselves and knew about the details of our chosen dishes. I will definitely be back to try more of the amazing looking dishes.
Honestly, the Lu Rou Fan is below average compared to other options in the Bay Area. There are several Taiwanese restaurants in the South Bay and Fremont with much better flavors. The Fu Ru fried chicken, Dou Bao and spicy noodles were also just mediocre. The service and ambience are excellent.

My girlfriend and I have been here a handful of times. If we crave chicken, this is the spot. They know how to fry that cutlet; the numbing sauce is delightful. I felt obligated to write a review after the last visit. It’s December and chilly outside, if you chose to sit inside remember to bring your own space heater with you. They leave the front doors, patio door and upper windows open; as I look around I see every table hunched over their hands and sniffling just like I am. I mentioned this to two waiters who had quick responses “sorry we don’t have heaters” and “yea it’s chilly in here” but no one closes a door. I have a sincere hunch sitting outside under the propane heat would be better than an inside table. I guess maybe it’s a strategy, you’re definitely not going to be sitting around hanging out if you’re uncomfortably cold. Table turnover times must be quick in winter. Close a door, plug in a 50$ space heater or two and we’ll be back, Otherwise we won’t consider it until May or June when it warms up outside.
This place just isn't what it used to be. It's gotten so expensive and we were disappointed this last time. The whole grilled squid was so tough, that ruins it. Grilled bok choy was just ok. Chicken cutlet and also eggplant noodles were good but not amazing. Over$100... It was sooo cold in there that it made the whole dinner a drag. They need to change that. Don't advice going when it's cold....
Classic and innovative Taiwanese dishes, flavors are solid. Quite busy, service leans on the slow side, prices on the high side for the amount of food you get (i.e. $22 for one eggplant). Those factors combined make this a difficult spot for repeat visits

Came in with super high expectations from all the reviews and was very underwhelmed by the flavors and the food. Service was impeccable but the only thing that had any flavor was the spicy noodles. The minced pork noodle was lacking salt and any real savory aspect. The king oyster mushrooms were extremely chewy and didn’t have enough sauce on them (they also came out 20 minutes after all the other food). The eggplant was ok but could’ve used a little more lasting flavor. My wife was hooked on the chips though and will be taking those to go.
Mediocre and overpriced. Hard pieces of ground pork in the Lu Rou Fan were especially disappointing compared to my experience with the dish in Taiwan (where it costs about USD $2). Spicy noodles had too much vinegar and lacked spice. Also a tiny portion. The grilled bok choy for $7 was really steep for 4 half-pieces, when this much bok choi is $0.50 at a Chinese grocery store.
Have been here a few times , but still haven’t enjoyed it as much as I thought I would. I can see that the intention is to create a fine dining experience to elevate and modernize Taiwanese cuisine, but to me, it feels a little overdone. Authentic Taiwanese food, in my experience,is comforting, straightforward, and at a price point that everyone can enjoy and share. I feel like this restaurant was designed for everyone except actual Taiwanese people. So, if you want to experience something “exotic,” then yes, this would be fine. But if you’re looking for a real taste of home and the warmth of the Taiwanese culture, you may leave a little disappointed. By the way, the rice I ordered wasn’t cooked through.
The food was good, but definitely overpriced. They also added an extra $2 charge for crunchy chili oil without informing me beforehand (I requested hot sauce, and the chili oil was the only option they have). This was the first time I’ve ever been charged for chili oil, and I was really shocked when I saw the bill. Yet the chili oil tasted nothing special and not spicy at all (the chili oil offered for free by the popup taco truck next door was way better). On top of that, the rice wasn’t fully cooked, the center was hard. Disappointed as someone born and raised in Taiwan. Will not return.

Unfortunately, this was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had. Paying $8 for a cup of tea is already hard to justify, but it wasn’t even hot enough. The restaurant seems to be trying to position itself as an elevated, upscale Taiwanese spot, yet the flavors were very underwhelming. The only somewhat interesting flavor was the kimchi and even that was $8 for a tiny side dish served in a very small cup, which is honestly ridiculous. Another major issue was the temperature. The restaurant was freezing cold inside, to the point where I was sitting in my jacket the entire time, unable to focus on enjoying the food. It’s hard to enjoy a meal when all you can think about is how cold you are. To make things worse, the food came out one dish at a time, which felt awkward and almost funny considering how small the portions were. Overall, extremely disappointing experience. I was not impressed by the food, the value, or the comfort of the space. I will not be coming back.
