Husband & I went last night for Valentines Day. Went at 5 to beat the rush-glad we did! Line was out the door shortly after we arrived. The food was so so so good! I had GF penny pasta with evoo, thinly sliced garlic & very fresh & abundant calamari. Hubbie had the lasagna. Authentic Italian food! We ate every single bite! The parmesan cheese at the table isnt the grocery store stuff in the green can, its freshly grated parm!! (I asked). We sat outside & the portable heat lamps kept us more than warm. Owners were busy walking around making sure everyone was happy, comfortable, and had whatever the customers needed. Very attentive. We will be returning for sure! Cant wait to try other items on the menu.
The food was very good. The owners and employees were pleasant. It is casual, and rather small, but the space is used effectively. They have quite a following, due to the personal warmth in personality.
Been coming here 2+ years food is fantastic. Never ordered a thing I didn’t like but it’s hard to branch out because I have my go to’s. La Pinsa w the burrata and crispy prosciutto, calamari, lasagna….tried the Cabonara last time, best I’ve ever had. Don’t get too busy I still want to come eat here!
New favorite Italian place in SD. Food is amazing and staff is great. Highly recommend the carbonara, it’s the best I’ve had.
Wonderful small restaurant with indoor and outside dining. Extensive menu for lunch and dinner. But I eat carbonara each time, complete with the egg in the center. It's divine! Really!
This place is truly a treasure. We have greatly enjoyed the spaghetti and meatballs, lasagne, turkey sandwich and best of all the super yummy artichoke dish. I’m so happy we discovered Alice’s.
I stopped in on my way home from work. Didn’t expect much as I just wanted a Caprese sandwich. Ended up getting that along with prosciutto de parma, arugula, fresh tomato and balsamic vinegar. The bread was outstanding - crusty and the mozzarella was soft and fresh. Also came with a side salad. Way too much for one person, but I highly recommend.
Love the warmth, hospitality and fine cuisine Alice has to offer. I lost my wallet there today and had so much care amdnsupport from the staff. I was able to find it and they made me feel so cared for! Alice's rocks! Best food and service anddddd amazing staff. 100% RECOMMEND
Great patio and food was delicious.
Excellent Italian food.the Italian food here is excellent. It is very authentic. While the prices are high the portions are very large. A portion of the pasta is large enough to be shared by two people.
I wish there were more stars to award this place! Delicious food. Everything we ordered was fantastic! The owners are friendly and accommodating. A hidden gem!
The owner is a wonderful person who makes everyone comfortable. The food is excellent. From the outside, it looks like a fast food place. It is the opposite.
Atmosphere ✅ Service ✅ Food ✅ We had Zack as our server this evening. Zack made great suggestions and they were spot on! All of the servers were attentive and friendly! See you soon Sherrin
Very enjoyable little spot that will be our go to italian restaurant. Price was reasonable and food was great.
My husband and I love this place so much. Our 12 year old too! It is so great to go to a small casual dinner locally for wonderful food served by kind people with an interesting backstory. The food is delicious! Everything we’ve tried we have loved. I swear the lasagna practically melts in your mouth. Wow! We will go back again and again! ~ Rachael & Kevin
Alice's Italian Gourmet is a hidden GEM! Food is SO good! Fresh and delicious. Service is at the top of any restaurant we have been to. Friendly, attentive, happy. Hurry into Alice's Italian Gourmet Restaurant for a wonderful meal
Excellent food and top notch service. The enclosed patio area enabled easy conversation during a leisurely meal of two specials for the evening: eggplant parmigiana and beef ravioli.
Amazing! Best Italian food in SD! Everything we get here is so good! Service is awesome! I love the staff. It’s a must go! If you live in north county, make this your go to Italian restaurant
Excellent, from "scratch", authentic Italian food! I love that it is a family business with both Alice and her husband visiting us during the meal. Very nice folks, A+ food, super casual and warm atmosphere. Wednesday (August 2020) will be our 4th visit. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Amazing! So glad we found Alice's. Both dinner dishes we had were incredible, and the whole staff was very welcoming and friendly. We will definitely be going back soon.
Tried this place for the first time tonight and I have no idea what has taken me so long….absolutely AMAZING! The staff is extremely friendly and genuine, the food is divine, and the atmosphere is relaxed and cozy. I highly suggest giving this place a try because you will become a regular. This will be my go-to spot for Italian food in Encinitas moving forward.
Excellent service by a couple of young men. Food was cooked to order. Excellent marinara sauce and ample mozzarella baked over rigatoni in a round oven ready cooking dish. Fresh out of oven and damn hot. The dish is called Pasta Al Forno. Enough food for dinner tonight and lunch tomorrow. Wine by the glass or bottle, soft drinks and Americana coffee - not what we are used to.
1) Loved how the restaurant looks inside, nice atmosphere. 2) REAL Italian food, and the owners were there and very active. 3) For take-away, it was pretty quick! 4) Tasted amazing! We had the Pasta (build your own). The first one was spaghetti, vodka-tomato sauce, and chicken and it was delicious! The second pasta was fettuccini, vodka-tomato sauce, and veggies, also very good. We also had garlic bread (VERY garlic-y). Only one warning for others: adding veggies to the pasta is not what you would typically think, and they are chopped tiny. Overall, really excited to have this place in Encinitas!
I LOVE THIS PLACE SO MUCH!!!!!! I used to go here before I left for college, but now that I am home I go at least 1-2 times a week. The food is AMAZING, but the owners are what make it the full experience. I have been there for lunch and dinner and have brought my family and every time it is a PERFECT and loving experience and the owners truly care. I get the penne with olive oil and sometimes the bruschetta and it DELICIOUS
The food here is always incredible, particularly the specials. The staff is so friendly and attentive. Brava, Alice!
Great food I had the beef lasagna it was fantastic! We Sat on the patio they had heaters and it was quite nice. Family owned and run the place is a must go for anyone who can appreciate authentic Italian food!!!
Best spaghetti we've ever had. Spaghetti with marinara, chicken and mushrooms. Got 4 long pieces of delicious garlic bread for $7.50, which g came with red dipping sauce. Altogether the meal cost $35. 9/1/22 Bob & Margaret Strickland in Encinitas CA
My book club had dinner here last month. The service was great. A true family restaurant. Great ambiance and we loved the food. The owner had made the tiramisu the night before. It was soooo good!
Yum yum yum! This place is great! Great Italian food but with a freshness about it. I love their Chicken Picante Special. These folks are the real deal. Moved here form Italy and opened this great little place to eat in our neighborhood. They are super friendly too. Check them out
A little pricy place ,especially Beer, but worthy. Highly recommend pastas. Every ingredients are very fresh and good quality. Best authentic pasta you can get in San Diego. Recommend Carbonara and Vodka tomato sauce pasta.
This is an amazing family-owned business! The Carbonara and Lasagne were superb. The carbonara had a nice bright yolk placed in the center of the dish. The Roma and Meatball sandwiches are some of our favorites. Next time you are in the mood for Italian food consider supporting this great local eatery.
True Italian Restaurant . Nice atmosphere with very nice Italian staff. I had no idea this place was so good. Very good food! I was craving spaghetti & meatballs with marinara. It was very good. Pasta was perfect and sauce tasted fresh.
Alice is by far the most amazing Italian food in San Diego. It continues to get better and better. Fresh and attention to detail. The lasagna is authentic made with a touch of Bechemel. We love it here.
Carbonara and the artichoke appetizer are a must! The daily specials also never disappoint and the chicken piccata is delish! The family is amazing and the service is always on point. It’s a family-owned local favorite not to be missed! Make sure to get the wine recommendations as well!
Amazing Food! Will be coming here every time I visit the area.
We love this restaurant and the owners are very special. The food is always superb as is the service. The lasagna and pasta carbonara are the best we have ever eaten. Highly recommend!
It really is an Italian restaurant and it's good! They were also willing to modify some dishes with no problem. It's a small place so you should make reservations
Everything at Alice’s was wonderful. The food was delicious, all of the staff were friendly and kind and the service was great. My only critique would be the Caesar salad wasn’t very flavorful. Otherwise the food was exceptional, especially the cannoli’s. We will gladly be back.
Delicious food and beautiful patio! Very friendly service as well.
Had an absolutely amazing dinner there tonight with friends. We are all very good cooks, so always very appreciative of excellent food. Everything we had this evening was prepared inspiringly well, which is not a common thing to find in San Diego restaurants. Two of us ordered one the specials, Eggplant Parmigiana. We were in agreement it was perhaps the best ever (and there have been many tried over the years!). Another had the Carbonara, which was truly a don’t-miss work of art. What the restaurant lacks in ambiance, it certainly makes up for in amazing food, excellent service, and warm and caring owners/wait staff. We’ll definitely tell friends and will most certainly visit often!
You would think from outside the restaurant that it was little more than slightly above a fast food place. You would be so wrong! The food was outstanding! Everything looked and sounded so good it was hard to choose. We both had the spaghetti with a wonderful marinara and prosciutto sauce. So good! People next to us had the lasagna and it looked equally tasty. Service was very good also. It wasn't a fancy place..just a few tables inside and a few outside under an awning in the parking lot. I would definitely go back though and would recommend it to anyone in the Encinitas area.
The food and service are superb. The front facade of the restaurant is basic, but the food is phenomenal.
Stopped here on a whim. Not disappointed one bit. Food was excellent and served like your Mom would. Family owned and treated us like family. I only wish I lived closer and could go back more often. Will definitely return next year. Thank you for a memorable evening. 💛
Great authentic Italian food, nice, informal atmosphere, service is always good. The prices may be a little high, but you get the quality that you pay for.
Food is great. I had this eggplant &sausage dish. Amazing! Servers and owners are attentive and welcoming.
Alice's has great food. I have only been once but tried a few things and all were great. The fried calamari were some of the best I've ever had. My brother-in-law had chicken parmesan sliders, which tried and loved. I went with the special, salmon pasta and it was excellent. I also shared a delicious salad. All in all can't wait to go back.
This restaurant was soo good. The service was great. And the food, the food was amazing. The pasta was phenomenal. The vodka-tomato sauce had an amazing balance between the tomato and the cream. The marinara sauce's taste was great and the texture was even better; using fresh crushed tomatoes with seeds that would pop in your mouth when you ate it.
Carlo, Alice and their three sons are lovely people, their service is great and everything we’ve tried over the last two years is a absolutely delicious! We get takeout frequently and it is always ready promptly and equally delicious! A wonderful restaurant in our very own neighborhood, Mark & I highly recommend!
This is our favorite restaurant in Encinitas. The owners are so very friendly and welcoming. The food is absolutely delicious and fresh. We love, love LOVE Alice's and look forward to our many dinners there.
We have been going to Alice’s for several years, starting before the pandemic. It has been our favorite Italian restaurant, and we try to go at least once per week. Carlo, Alice, their sons and the entire wait staff are phenomenal… they greet us by name when we come in, and the food is always delicious. We try to bring family and friends there whenever someone comes to visit us. While everything I have tried there has been great, their Matriciana is my absolute favorite. I have tried Matriciana in many other Italian restaurants as we have traveled or dined out, and Alice’s is the BEST! You need to try it!! We also always get a bottle of the Young Amarone… another item you have to try, as it is a delicious wine and a great complement to the food.
Food is delicious here! Always on point🎯
The BEST Carbonara I ever had. Staff is amazing. We can not wait to come back. The chocolate cake is amazing.
My husband and I have been here for the very first time and we immediately fell in love with this place. The staff is amazing, they know how to treat you and make you feel at home. Alice is very passionate about her job and we loved her homemade desserts sooo much. A special mention to Michele, a very young yet extremely professional waiter, who contributed to create a cozy and pleasant atmosphere! As Italian, I can say it's hard to find place such Alice's where you feel so vividly the warm of our country. We will definitely come back!
This is by far the best and most authentic Italian restaurant in North County and probably all of San Diego. A true Italian family owned place and the owners are such accommodating hosts. I have tried almost everything on the menu and I have never been disappointed. Try it once and like me, it will become your go to restaurant.
Our first time dining at Alice’s and it was absolutely DELICIOSO! Loved the subtle Italian music too! Atmosphere was wonderful! 😄 Thank you Carlo and Alice’ for the superb hospitality and magnificent food! You are our new favorite restaurant! We can’t wait to return!
food was excellent! Started with the bruschetta followed by today’s special, spinach linguine with shrimp. My wife had baked pasta rigatoni. Atmosphere was a little underwhelming. listening to the guys behind the counter bantering in Italian added to the ethnicity of the setting. we enjoyed it thoroughly.
Wonderful friendly staff— professional service; clean dining area. The food is amazing here; there is no other place like this that checks all of the necessary boxes. I am always so happy to eat the food here and also support the business.
Service was top notch, I ordered spaghetti and meatballs it was phenomenal will be back!
Came to this lot at random, and found this place and decided to stop in. We were greeted instantly at the door, the young man that was serving us was very polite and patient with me (I was struggling to decide on what I wanted) the food came out at a very reasonable time and with enough time for us to enjoy our appetizer and settle before our meals. Both of our meals were delicious. We ordered dessert and that tied it all together, I got the strawberry tiramisu. Best night out for dinner that I’ve had in a long time. We sat outside, and it was a nice comfortable atmosphere. We will definitely be visiting this place more often! Thank you for such a wonderful night out Alice’s!
Excellent food, service and atmosphere. Very authentic Italian menu. I created my own pasta dish with penne, pesto and chicken. Outstanding! Thanks to Alice, Carlo, and staff for a wonderful dinner and special evening out with family. A must when in Encinitas!
I read somewhere to find out how good a restaurant is, the test is order the simplest item on the menu. In this case, the lasagna and pasta. Alice passed the test with flying colors. The pasta was cooked perfect tenderness. The lasagna had a great flavor. It was obvious that they did more than the usual layering. I feel they roasted the tomatoes before marking it into sauce Same for their marinara, the roasted flavor of the tomatoes gave the marinara a richer flavor. But I could be wrong. Anyway it was beyond words. Got to go. The staff were friendly, restaurant happy vibes, busy and feels like eating at home but way better food
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinners. Both were delicious and the portions were very generous. The garlic bread was excellent, as was the tiramisu. They have a covered patio dining area. The staff was great.
We ate 4 dishes here: The garlic bread, a pasta dish, salmon special, and tiramisu. All of them were delicious and perfectly cooked - the food plus the service was fantastic! I'm so glad we tried it out!!
Beautiful flavors! Had the pasta with spaghetti and vodka tomato sauce. The sauce exploded at each bite into the food! It's a surprise when you have that first taste of that sauce. The meatball sandwich was spectacular! Towards the end the bread softened and soaked up all of the juices from that great meatball and the sauce. I had to use the rest of that bread too wipe up the remaining pasta sauce though. Please go here and give it a try.
We started going to Alice’s about two years ago, and I have to say it is the best Italian that we have had ever! Alice’s and Carlo are absolutely so kind and accommodating. Their food is always on point and never disappoints we highly recommend a date night out at their restaurant. I would recommend making a reservation because they can get pretty busy.
Excellent authentic northern Italian. The owner and family are from Milan. The dishes are excellent examples of Italian techniques using local ingredients. We shared the Polpette starters which was two good sized meatballs in marinara and three crostini. We could have used another crostini because we stopped up every vestige of the sauce, fantastic! The meatballs were very meaty with a firm sausage like texture, also fantastic. I had the Spaghetti Arrabbiatta with an Italian sausage. Spicy sauce, just enough, al dente pasta, very good sausage. My wife had the Caccio e Pepe and pronounced it excellent, not dry and very flavorful. We finished with the Cannoli, three ricotta filled, chocolate splashed, crispy cylinders of goodness. Too bad we live 45 miles away! But we will be back!
Can’t say enough good things about this restaurant. Run by Italians, very friendly, nice wines on selection. The food is very very very good! You order at the counter and get a number. It’s very casual, but the food is the quality of a top Italian restaurant.
I came here for a quick bite to eat while waiting for an alignment nearby. Since it was my first time there, I asked the server for a recommendation. The lasagna was amazing... highly recommend 😋
This place is an absolute hidden GEM! Such wonderfully blended flavors and fresh creations make this a MUST VISIT when in the area. Alice, pronounced "Uh-lee-che", was such a gracious host who spent time with each of her guests on the outside Covid-freindly patio. I am thinking of that pasta right now!!! Cannot wait to go back and visit when in the area again. ***** ALL THE STARS! *****
What an amazing place! Alice and Carlo took great care of us and the food was some of the best Italian food I've ever had. Definitely listen to Carlo's wine selection if you are a wine person. We got the bruschetta, the cacio e pepe, and the Cannelloni. Thank you so much for a wonderful meal!
Best Italian food in Encinitas! 1st When majority of their staff speaks Italian you know you found a gem! I’ve been coming here since they opened and the food, pasta, sauces, and anything that’s been order has been consistently delicious! I will lick the bowl clean the sauces are so good! This place is small so dining in can get crowded and take out is always a good option. Update: I’d give 10 STARS if I could. I came here for my bday dinner and I was told they didn’t have any more Prosecco, we ordered sparkling water to toast, and the owner came out with a bottle with fresh champagne glasses. He poured us all a glass and I got to cheers to close out my day. This place is like going over to your Tia & Tio’s house where the welcoming is warm and food fills the soul. Italian Soul Food
Wow, what a gem. I met Carlo the owner in the Dollar Tree parking lot and thought what a nice guy. Turns out he is from Italy and owns Alice's Italian Gourmet Restaurant. So, I figured I'd give his place a try. He did not disappoint. The fettuccine Alfredo was perfectly unique and absolutely delicious. Ugo my server is from Italy and was attentive and pleasant. I highly recommend.

Hands down the best Italian restaurant in San Diego. The northern Italian food is amazing, each dish was unique and delicious. Bravo 🎉
Like a lot of recovering tourists, we recently got back from Italy and were left craving for Italian food, so we started the hunt for a local authentic Italian restaurant in Encinitas - we were not expecting to land in a strip mall parking lot but we didn’t judge and let the reviews guide us. From the minute we called in a reservation (recommended) we were pleasantly greeted with Italian accent (the owner) who graciously accommodated us for a 7 pm dinner. Upon arriving we were greeted by the same pleasant Italian gentlemen who provided outstanding service throughout the evening. The interior of the restaurant isn’t anything you’ll find in a romantic Italian soap opera but it’s cozy and they have plenty of space for larger parties out on the patio complete with heaters and string lights. We ordered the bruschetta for appetizers, carbonara and baked pasta for our entree and the cannoli for dessert (comes with 4 individual pieces to share). Each bite was more delicious than the last and we’re so grateful that we found such an authentic, family owned and operated restaurant so close to home. Thank you for the wonderful service and food, we’ll definitely be back!
This Italian restaurant is definitely 5 star. It was the best Italian food I've ever had. The owner and his children are all so nice. They were very attentive. Great portion sizes and not expensive. Very relaxed atmosphere. Unfortunately we live about 2.5 hours away or it would be regular!
Amazing and authentic family owned restaurant, came for a dinner with my grandparents and will definitely be coming back! All of the food is delicious, but I especially recommend the Gamberoni with pasta Aglio e Olio or whatever special is available
Service was top notch, I ordered spaghetti and meatballs it was phenomenal will be back!

Local mom and pop restaurant with excellent food, great service and a down to earth atmosphere . The lasagna is fantastic as are almost all of the dishes. It's like eating in Mama's kitchen.
Really good food, in a fun casual environment. You'd be forgiven if you dismissed it from outward appearances and somewhat odd location, but go try it out. Authentic menu of pasta, panini, and charcuterie boards are excellent. Even though the head waiter supports Inter Milan, you can forgive that mistake, while you enjoy the friendly, family-style hospitality and atmosphere anyway.
The service and food were amazing. It was my first time going and I would definitely go back again.
True family Italian meal, nothing pretentious just perfect food for the soul. Who cares about the location and fast food atmosphere when you have such an honest cooking that brought me back to Italy, sharing a joyful meal with my friends. Highly recommend it.
We really like this place. A well-prepared limited menu in a family owned restaurant. The flavors are authentic and the prices are a good value for the quality. Small, limited seating, pay first upon ordering, sit inside or outside, enjoy some wine. Charming family members who talk to you as if they were serving at their home. A very nice touch. Mangia!
The food was pretty damn good and authentic. The host and a couple servers seemed italiante blood. We had the create you own pasta which was convenient, easy and priced well. Tasted great. Also had one of the specials, The portobello mushroom creamy sauce ravioli. Not our favorite dish. Looked awesome but the ravioli wasn't done, the cream became a thick peanut butter feel in your mouth and the mushroom taste became overwhelming. $32 for that one plate?? Wish they had mentioned the special was more expensive than a normal plate. We had to ask for refills and garlic bread. Complementary bread with our dish would have been nice. But all in all the food seemed good given the choice you make. The environment was welcoming without invading to your space. Server was cool but could have been a bit more attentive. Definitely worth a try
Quaint spot serving up pretty good food. Best bet for seating is outside. The service is mostly hit with some misses. Good selection of wines by the glass at reasonable prices. The house Chianti is especially good. We ordered fried calamari 3.5/5, carbonara 4/5, pollo piccata 4/5, and cannolis 3.5/5. Pretty solid, but a bit overrated.

Over all it was pretty good the food was good however we were charged for the bread without being told it costs money and when we asked what's in a dish they said matsarrla without saying that it costs extra but thats about the only downside other then that the food was absolutely awesome they did refile the drink for free tho (-:
It was good. I've been told it's authentic Italian food. Service is good. A little pricey but served up hot and tasty and the wait isn't long. Good selection. Skip the shrimp it is served up with small salad shrimp. If you live in the area worth a visit.
We tried this restaurant based on a strong Nextdoor recommendation and other reviews. We could accept Italian food with pasta, sauce and cheese in a strip mall, not to the Chicago or New York standard, but not for almost $300 with tip.
Many restaurants in the same location have not survived, but I predict this one will based on how busy it was tonight! However, I had the gnocchi special (with Italian sausage, zucchini, marinara, said no mushrooms). It was expensive ($17!!) for not being a sit-down restaurant & the gnocchi was over-cooked (too mushy for my taste), but the flavors of the dish were good & fresh. My son liked his spaghetti & marinara. The garlic bread was okay (thin & hard, not what I expected). It smells like fried food inside & my hair & clothes now smell "like Alice's" my son says. I will try it again at some point & will order something else (want to try the bruschetta, caprese & artichoke hearts) & sit outside.
[Updated Feb 6 2024 - still great owners and nice update to full service sit down restaurant, but food prices are now ridiculously high. Good taste, but not at these prices. Chicken Marsalis was avg. (Sadly, Had better at Cheesecake Factory). Chicken parm was perfect, but at $33 not worth it) Always excellent food, great daily specials and nicely family owned by Italian couple. Food prices a little high, but quality of food warrants the price.
As a first timer to Alice's Italian Gourmet restaurant, I was impressed with the friendliness and attentiveness of the staff! I ordered the Lasagna ($20) and quite honestly was bothered that the entree did not come with a side salad and bread as this has traditionally been my experience in a sit down restaurant and for $20! So I feel the food quality is good, but not worth $20 by itself!!! Nice outdoor seating area!

I probably will not go back. Expensive for the venue. I was disappointed with the lasagna the 1st time there. 2nd time I tried the caprese, 4 slices of tomato with 4 slices of mazzarella on top, a little drizzle of balsamic vinegar but garnished with so little basil that I couldn't get basil on each bite. The caprese and a iced tea came to $18.05.
Called to get Togo. I was told 20min. Showed up in 30. Order not put in system. Waited about 20 min to get food after being told 5 min. Get home and order was wrong. No sorry for delay. Can't say I'll be back.
The service at Alice’s Restaurant was TERRIBLE. We didn’t receive bread for 45 minutes!!! I complained about the long delay in serving our food and the waiter’s excuse was that they were busy. We finally walked out after not receiving our entrees for one hour!!! How long does it take to make Spaghetti Carbonara and Penne Alfredo and Shrimp??? They are incompetent!!! Avoid!!!
Ordered spagetti and meat balls with garlic bread to go. Waited 25 minutes to get it and paid $31.50. Entree was no better than a can of Franco American Spaghetti from Walmart for $3.
I actually have dined at this place since it opened and loved it. Unfortunately, over time and of course the pandemic it has declined in food quality. Tonight however was totally awful. A simple take out order of pasta and a side of brocollini was inedible. The brocollini was burnt and the pasta sauce tasted like a poor jarred sauce.....
