We popped down to the old crown for a meal after an unwelcome experience at a nearby hotel we were staying at. We had just completed 60miles cycling over the chilterns which took our total to 150 miles cycling over two days, raising money for brain tumour research as we are all amateurs… the old crown just looked like a pub from outside and we saw the menu and it seemed a bit pricey for pub grub, but once we had a drink and the table was ready(for 10) we headed through to the ballroom… wow what a venue, instantly the menu appeared cheap for this location! The food didn’t disssapoint either, I had perfectly cooked and seasoned moules mariniere with exceptional focaccia covered in perfectly roasted garlic , the sauce was perfect as many places are too creamy , this was balanced - correct mouthfeel but not a cream fest. I then had perfectly cooked stone bass , a good chunk too! With exquisite black truffle gnocchi- the rest of the team had a mix but all were singing the chefs praises, including amazing sirloin steak, perfect chicken with a herb crust, lamb and the vegetarian pappardelle. Another key point was the service was exceptional! The guy who we think must be a manager at front of house was fantastic- attentive, friendly, good conversation and overall what you would hope other front of house are but aren’t. If I ever come to Farringdon again I will stay here but unfortunately without knowing in advance we booked somewhere else….

Amazing value for money, amazing service was sensational I would 100% recommend. The chef Sam is phenomenal best roast I’ve ever had. I asked for my beef to be cooked a little more as I don’t like it very pink and it was perfect

The Crown is the heart of Faringdon. Amazing food, Sunday lunch is the best. Incredible events. Update: Staying here as a hotel guest, for a cheeky night away for another great Crown Event. The Courtroom is stunning, highly recommend!

Delicious breakfast One of my favourite meals is breakfast and this beautiful and stunning venue has a lot of history and atmosphere. The food was well presented and delicious. Quality food well cooked. Only gripe, put toast on separate plate to save moistening.

Went for their themed Titanic dinner and it was fantastic. Food was fresh, tasty and creative. Service was friendly and welcoming. They do a Supper Club on Thursdays. Highly recommend here if your looking for a top notch meal.

Wow! This a review for both the accomodation and the food - both exceptional. We stayed for 3 nights total and had the supper club set menu on the Thursday night. The room was beautiful, far better than we expected. The bathroom was small but easily manageable. The bed was lovely, the TV huge and the coffee machine good. The housekeeping was exceptional each day also. The dinner that we had was one of the best we have had in UK, throughout Europe and within Australia. Very good value at only £35pp including 3 courses and a bottle of wine - this also comes with bread (which I would really count as a fourth course). In Australia, I would easily pay $90AUDpp for four courses (including bread) and $120 AUDpp including the wine. Considering that most other things are cheaper in Australia, this says a lot about the quality. The only comment I will make - the dessert was not to the standard of the rest. Still very tasty but not as good. Very sweet and forgettable. Would definitely recommend the accomodation and the dining! The location is also perfect for visiting other nearby towns.

Exceptional roast beef at the old crown coaching inn today. 10000x recommend to anyone in the area or even further!

Quiet when we went but served a perfectly good pint and sat out in the courtyard. Sell Hawkstone beer and ciders although you'll have to ask as only seemed to have the lager in the back bar.

Tried the critically acclaimed food at the ballroom in December. Really was a fabulous experience, orchestrated by a wonderfully talented young chef. If you’re not afraid to, on occasion, pay a bit more for outstanding food, you must try here. The duck was perfectly cooked, well sized portion. The desserts were all well balanced in flavour, not too sweet, sour, or bitter. The complimentary brownies were a really nice touch. All the service staff were in sync and simply professional. Only minor drawback for me was the mushroom starter. Its flavour profile was simply sour; it tasted a bit vinegary, and could have done with a little more to compliment the flavours. Otherwise flawless meal.

Can not comment on the rooms as only had a lovely afternoon drinks and lunch, Both a little pricey but I would say overall, especially with the lovely staff and service it was very justified, and the tastiest toasty ever , really yummy, lovely court yard to sit in the sunshine, we were so carried away chatting we almost forgot to pay lol. Really enjoyed our visit and we absolutely will visit again soon

We had Sunday lunch here and spent the afternoon in the courtyard. We ended up staying the night. The dinner was great and so was the breakfast. The staff are very friendly and efficient. The building has tons of character and has been refurbished recently to a high standard. I can't wait to visit again.

Had an overnight stay here on the way home from the NEC. It's an absolute gem of a place! The room was stunning, huge bed, very cosy! Dinner in the restaurant was a real treat.....amazing food served with delicious wine by the ultra friendly staff headed up by restaurant manager and sommelier Nick. Would recommend this place 100% 💙

Stayed for three nights and had a lovely experience. The room was very clean, beautiful, and comfortable. Breakfast was very good and the dinning room is lovely. I went to the pub just once and the service was excellent. If I am ever in faringdon again I will look forward to staying here.

Stayed at The Old Crown Coaching Inn and it was fabulous. Staff were amazing, especially Sebastiaan and Luka! Very The food was also incredible, best piece of halibut I have tasted! Really nice to meet (I believe) the head chef, Adam too. Fab night.

Can't rate the rooms as never stayed. However the pub is very cosy and the fireplace is a great addition during winter. Restaurant is fairly pricey but the food is outstanding and you definitely get what you pay for. Service is always friendly and efficient

This review is purely for the restaurant as I have not experienced the hotel or associated pub. We stumbled in here accidentally while on a walk, which was lucky. The food was absolutely incredible, all the way from starters to desserts. The staff were attentive and professional, and the atmosphere was very pleasant. While the prices are higher than average restaurants in the area, they are very reasonable for the quality. After looking at some of the other reviews it seems like this place has gone under some renovations a few months back and is now very high quality, so do not let any old reviews put you off. We absolutely will be coming back!

Had a lovely set meal last night in their 'Ballroom'. They've really spruced the place up since coming into ownership of this lovely building, and the food is very, very deserving of its 2AA Rosettes. Great service, not very busy at all on a Wednesday (their start of the week for Ballroom service to be fair) and very, very delicious food. Clearly highly talented and ambitious chef(s) with a real emphasis on creative but not zany cuisine. Minor criticism from someone who is far more into coffee than is normal; Illy coffee is not great. Given you have a great looking espresso machine it's somewhat disappointing you don't use a local roastery to elevate the quality of the last thing I drink before I leave... Certainly something that would be critiqued if you had higher ambitions than the 2AA rosettes!

A beautiful hotel and pub that truly lets you take in the full Cotswolds atmosphere. The pub is cozy, while the rooms are spacious and new. The service was excellent—attentive to every need and full of great recommendations. I will definitely be back!

We travelled to The Old Crown Coaching Inn for my birthday celebration. We had cocktails in the cocktail bar and then we had a wonderful steak and chips in the dining room... there was also someone playing the piano, which was wonderful....we stayed overnight and had a wonderful breakfast in the morning...all the hotel staff were very friendly and it was really great, thank you

Just spent two nights here. A lovely welcome with a little bit of the history of the place while taken up to my room, very interesting history. Room was very comfortable and spotlessly clean. Slept well both nights. Beautiful village location and very good price, helpful and polite staff, will definitely stay again, highly recommend.

We spent one night in the Courtroom, amazing room! Large bed, two sofas and a fireplace and the bathroom even has a whirlpool. We felt like kings! The staff were also very friendly and nice! All in all an unforgettable stay, always happy to return and can only be recommend.

Booked for lunch as it was a special family occasion. Lovely setting and dining area. Great friendly staff with nothing being too much trouble. Catered very well with options for one food allergy in the group but all the above was just a taster of what was to come. The FOOD, which was superb! Interesting combinations of local fresh produce, prepared and presented with care and expertise. Everything that came looked and tasted fantastic. Really a stand out meal and occasion. My huge compliments to the chef and crew.

Hidden gem. Nice location, really lovely Old Town Inn in town centre. Cool pub, nice beer. Very friendly staff. The only downside i can think is that the room was a bit warm to my liking. Would come back of ever in area again... 10/10 recommendation

Lovely old inn in beautiful Faringdon with pretty courtyard garden. The food was outstanding (and I’m really fussy!) - we had a fabulous 3 course dinner - flavours, presentation, quality of ingredients were top notch and included homemade bread and basil butter to start us off (no charge). Breakfast (full English ) the following morning was outstanding- homemade hash brown (OMG), field mushrooms cooked perfectly (so rare) and so on. Can’t praise the food highly enough. Thanks to all who looked after us. Sean and Diana

Has been good for a few years but has taken a recent upswing. Really very very good. It's always been an immaculate venue, established for hundreds of years but of late I'd say the step up has been twofold. 1. The food has been elevated to a sophisticated level. Not annoyingly challenging, it's all straightforward, but a best-in-class for good food 2. The service: globally service is suffering and every restaurant could do with an extra hand on deck, but the Crown has a fleet of bright, competent, charming staff who will make you feel properly cared for. The gauntlet is thrown down for other pubs to step the game up.

We went for a romantic weekend, the room was out of a movie, super clean warm and nice. We had dinner on the restaurant of the hotel and we absolutely love it , the food and the wine list was fabulous. The service and the attention of all the staff was friendly and professional. We would definitely will come back 🥰🙏🏽

My friend and I spent a few nights here in September. Excellent staff and service. Food was great, and the live band on our last night was a very pleasant surprise. As Americans, we were really lucky to end up here as it is not a big town with a lot of tourists. This hotel was one of the highlights of our trip to England.

We stayed for two nights between Christmas and New Year. Although we enjoyed the break and our room was nice, we felt it was overpriced.

Had a wonderful meal at The Crown. Halibut was exceptional followed by Pear Presse. The hotel has a warm old fashioned atmosphere and I would stay there again.

Not a stay - just restaurant... Have dined twice in "The Ballroom" - since it re-opened after a major refurbishment. Always felt that such a character filled building, literally central to the community was under utilised. The recent takeover and refit shows promise of making much more use of it's potential. The food is amazing, to echo what is in other reviews - clearly a talented chef & team who know what they are doing and are confident to push things their own way. On both visits - which were probably a year apart - the food was exceptional. The staff also have just the right level of attentiveness - there when needed but not 'in your face'. The Ballroom restaurant is well spaced out, the complete opposite of the being shoe-horned in that is often par for the course. Thoroughly recommend a visit.

First visit to this pub. Friendly staff and a good selection of beers and spirits. Day outside in the beer garden. Only complaint, there was a TV outside which was too loud. Nobody was watching it so the sound could have been turned down or the TV turned off.

Lovely hotel, easy parking, great location. We had our dog and had an ideal room for this. We didn't use the restaurant but have heard highly of it. Unfortunately there was no hot water during our stay, out of their control obviously, as soon as the manager was on site they were apologetic and dealt with our concerns very well. We will definitely return.

Really comfortable room, good service and high quality restaurant. We stayed for three nights. Only small complaint that the consumables (water, coffee etc) in our room were not replenished each day.

I first visited when the Folly festival was on 2025 great variety of entertainment /bands in the courtyards I thoroughly enjoyed the whole weekend. Went back News year's eve, far to many people crammed in The pub area, no room to dance. I had several G&Ts while there and everytime it was different even though I specifically asked for one kind, it wasn't as though they had ran out. The evening would have been much more pleasant had they put it in the ballroom, perfect for entertainment!! No comment on the food or hotel for staying.

We had Sunday Lunch here with friends on December 15th. This is the second time we'd had a Sunday lunch here and returned as the first experience was good. I'm not sure what happened this time as the experience was terrible. We ordered drinks and a bottle of sauvignon blanc, which arrived warm. We found the staff to be very inattentive and completely disinterested in our booking, which was a suprise as the restaurant was empty and only had a maximum of five covers including ourselves for the whole time we were there.vthe waiting staff took an age to take out order and when they finally came, we all ordered the beef. When it arrived, it was fatty, full of sinew and extremely tough, not what I would have expected for the price point. We did make mention of this to our waitress who did apologise, but offered no recompense Again, it took an age for the table to be cleared and our sweet order to be taken, which when it arrived, was cold. Apple pie and ice cream, which I asked to be warmed. It took over twenty minutes for the sweet to be returned and was only marginally warmer (cold) than when it was taken. We had coffee and I went down to pay the bill as a suprise and Christmas treat for our friends, not that the experience had been much of a treat, more of a chore. I informed the waitress that I didn't wish to pay the service charge (12.5%), but she added it anyway and when I questioned the untitled charge, was told it was VAT. I paid the bill in full and returned to the table where we began to gather our things ready to leave. To my suprise, our waitress came to the table and told she had charged the service charge to the total bill and offered to refund it. I declined as I was embarrassed by her action in front of our friends and just wanted to leave. The experience was disappointing for what was meant to be a pre Christmas treat and we'll certainly not be returning to The Crown any time soon. I would sincerely suggest avoiding this establishment.

Awful experience, principally because of the shocking service. Sadly, I cannot recommend it in any way and definitely won’t be going back. It took 70 mins from ordering to starters being served, then 40 mins between starters being cleared to mains arriving. In addition, a number of starters, mains and side orders were missing throughout resulting the significant delays for some individuals. We were a party of 16, however the restaurant was completely empty so this shouldn’t have been an issue. I would love to say that the food made up for the poor service, but it didn’t. Despite what was a really nice looking menu, the food was distinctly average especially considering the price. I expected so much more. The room was also freezing; we sat in our coats for the entire meal. On the plus side, it is a genuinely impressive venue, the decor is on point. It is modern whilst complimenting the buildings amazing history. The manager did apologise, however I thought offering free coffee if we ordered desserts was a poor/cheeky offer considering the experience. We would have been there until midnight!!

It's not often one orders a £38 as irloin steak on at Saturday lunchtime and asks for horseradish to go with it, only to be told that it can only be provided on a Sunday!

Had a meal there on Jan 2nd and ordered the burger. Tasted like meatloaf and the brie and cranberry were so little. 😅 The apple strudel dessert looks pretty but the crust is rock hard. Everything else is great.

C

There are many things wrong with the room the main one being it is right outside a bus stop and unless the blinds are shut, the top floor of double decker busses have a view straight into the room, in addition to this, the town square outside the window seemed to be home for the town drunk community. The town square is maybe no one’s fault but really the hotel should have stated the room is by a bus stop and that you have no privacy unless the blinds are closed. Because of the bus situation I also felt unable to have the windows open at any point and the room doesn’t not smell great either. I emailed the hotel about this twice and have not received a reply hence the 1* for customer service. The staff working in the hotel we nice and the food was good.

We booked a special birthday lunch here, having seen some good reviews. We were shown to the ballroom, where the flowers on the table were dead!! We were then given a bar menu of small plates. When we asked for the lunch menu, we were told that they were not running lunch today, as they had a large booking in the evening. We booked in advance and the day before, we had an email asking us to reconfirm our booking, which we did. The restaurant didn’t bother to warn us in advance despite having told them it was a special birthday lunch. Appalling service, so we left and ate elsewhere, at the White Hart in Fyfield, where we had a wonderful meal

D
D T (golly)

Don’t let the pictures fool you!! Rooms themselves look excellent however Cleanliness and rude staff really let this place down. Given the cost I would expect them to be able to afford a cleaner. Not impressed at all. Fur coat and no knickers as my mum would say

L

Hotel: Choose somewhere else if you want a good night's sleep. Noise from the pub was unsettling, and noise from people walking overhead was a constant disruption to any chance of relaxing. Staff seemed unconcerned and disinterested in their clientele. I am a repeat visitor to Oxfordshire and The Cotswolds, and I've a list of different places that I've stayed on more than one occasion. This place will not get onto that list.
