My wife and I came in for a date night, and as newcomers to New Jersey we’ve been on the hunt for a great omakase spot. This place completely exceeded our expectations. The fish quality was outstanding, and each course felt like its own unique culinary experience—somehow better than the one before it. The chef was warm, professional, and took the time to explain every course and how to enjoy it properly. I usually end up ordering extra at omakase restaurants, but even coming in hungry, I left totally satisfied. My wife and I genuinely can’t wait to return. Simon, the host, greeted us at the door with a smile and set the tone for a fantastic night. Highly recommend

My husband took me to this place to celebrate our wedding anniversary because he knows how much I love sushi and wanted to give me a unique and special experience in New Jersey, until we travel to Japan to enjoy it in its homeland. I loved it. Bryan was the person who attended us he was extremely attentive and professional. The service and care were excellent; it was an unforgettable experience. I loved everything, from the moment we walked through the door until we left. Highly recommended.

Great experience for us yesterday night! It’s our first omakase, chef Ryan gave us a very good experience and thank him for the special dessert! We love it.

Food and service were exceptional. Servers were very attentive to our needs. Sushi chefs were fantastic - took the time to explain each course and educated us on where the fish came from. If you're looking for flashy, eccentric food, this isn't the place for you. What you're paying for is high quality fish. The chefs do very little to it, allowing the fish to speak for itself. Having said that, while each course was great, I did find myself a little hungry at the end of the meal. Could have done with another small course or two. Regardless, the food was fantastic, and if you want to try something different for a date night or special event, this is a great place to try.

Absolute Gem! Amazing experience - 100% recommend this place to anyone looking for a omakase experience. BYOB is awesome as well.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at this incredible omakase restaurant, and it was an unforgettable experience! From the moment we walked in, the ambiance was serene and inviting, setting the perfect tone for the evening. The chef's mastery was evident in every meticulously crafted dish, each one a delightful surprise that showcased the freshest ingredients and exquisite flavors. The attention to detail and the personalized service made us feel truly special. Every bite was a culinary journey, and I can't recommend this place highly enough. Five stars all the way!

One of the better omakase experiences we’ve had and just the next town over! We had a great time at Sushi Kai celebrating a birthday dinner with a group of 5. The fish was so fresh and tasty. Some of the dishes were explosive in flavor. Our chef, JP, was super friendly and accommodating to our requests. I’d love to come back again. Reservations only, by the way!

Definitely one of the best sushi omakase in NJ. To be honest, it was a better experience than some of sushi omakase experience I had in NYC. It was better than Sushi Nakazawa The staff is very knowledgeable. There was an intimacy with the food preparation. Everything was well prepared and everything was done Right. Sauces for various sushi were done by hand and was the definitely the highlight of the dishes.

My fiancé and I went for my birthday in November. This was a 10/10 experience. We were treated like royalty all night and the food was exceptional. If only I could eat like this every day of my life! BYOB was awesome also. Thank you Sushi Kai!

First of all, thanks to Chef Jonathan who gave us unforgettable experience with amazing sushi! Every piece of course was kind of art piece and flavorful. Especially freshness of fish was excellent and the portion was pretty satisfying. Chef Jonathan kindly explained each course with great knowledge. Look forward to revisiting next winter :)

Wow! They really know how to create a great experience. I have a few places I typically go to celebrate a birthday or special occasion, but this experience blew them away. First, I got stuck in ridiculous bridge traffic on my way in. Over 20 minutes stopped dead on the exit ramp off Rt.4, I was stressed and concerned because I was about 10 minutes late for my reservation. Luckily, they were so nice and accommodating that I quickly forgot my stress and was able to enjoy my amazing meal. There was plenty of parking in the nearby municipal lot, but you can also luck out and get some street parking closer by. Either way, as long as you don't mind walking a couple blocks, you should be fine. The service was so friendly, but also discreet. They kept our glasses full (it's a BYOB) and everything neat and clean without being overbearing. It felt like a premium experience without being stuffy. My twin sister and I went for our birthday with a few family members, and they really made us feel special (without being awkward). All of the dishes were amazing, but they had a few special touches for my sister and I - some gold flakes on a few of the piece, a little extra uni (amazing), and a special scallop dish at the end that was absolutely amazing. I have learned not to expect much when you put a special occasion on a reservation because most places barely acknowledge it, but they did a great job of acknowledging it, while keeping it very classy. Most importantly, the food was all fantastic. Each piece was cut with care, and the sushi chef did a great job of explaining everything. The King Salmon (from New Zealand) with truffle was one of my favorite dishes I've ever had anywhere. It was so good. The pacing was great, you had enough time to enjoy everything without feeling rushed, but you also never felt like you were waiting long. Overall, a great omakase experience that I would recommend to anyone. We went at 5 p.m. and were a party of five, and there was just one other pair there. Not sure how much more full it is later in the evening or on a Saturday, but it's not a big place so I don't think it could be that much busier. The service was very professional, so I'm sure it would still be great if every seat was full

Sushi Kai was incredible. I thoroughly enjoyed this meal! We did the later Omakase - there were two separate seating times. I really liked that it was just us in the restaurant and no one else was coming in/leaving the restaurant. It felt intimate and personal - no distractions. It was a true experience! The quality of the fish was superior! I recommend visiting and experiencing their Omakase. If you’d like the follow for more, my instagram is @thehungryblondicorn

Omakase for $155 includes 16 courses at New Jersey’s top sushi restaurant. This was an exceptional lineup from beginning to end, with a veteran crew and really beautiful space. Chef Sung is a master with his knife skills and fish sourcing, we’re looking forward to the next visit already. Needless to say, highly recommend

One of the best dinner experiences we’ve ever had! We’ve traveled all over the world and have eaten at some amazing Michelin restaurants and this is absolutely one of the best restaurants we’ve been to. The fish was unbelievably fresh (flown in from Japan earlier that day), the service was impeccable, and the ambiance was welcoming and calming (loved the simple, clean aesthetic). Each course was delicious and served at the perfect pace. What really separates this place from other places is the incredible attention to detail - without saying a word, Chef Johnny noticed that my husband was left handed and he put his ginger on the left side of the plate to make my husband’s experience just a little bit more seamless (I noticed this and asked him about it when I saw everyone else’s ginger was on the right side of their plates). We love that it’s BYOB too! Cannot wait to go back! Sushi Kai should be on the map for a future Michelin star - excellent!!

Mar 27, 2025- had a rare experience of being the only patrons during the time slot. The restaurant is highly recommendable for the overall quality & selection of food, workmanship & service, and the great ambiance. Looking forward to my next visit on a special occasion.

6/5 star experience food was extremely delicious waiter was attentive. I would recommend BYOB since drinks outside of water are not offered. It didn't bother us in the slightest for our meal, but we will bring something for next time.

My husband secretly made reservations for us here. I always wanted to try omakase and he heard from a co-worker about this fantastic place in Fort Lee. It was our first omakase experience and everything was outstanding. We brought our own sake and the sushi was so tasty. We thought we wouldn't be full but we were pretty satisfied at the end. Service was excellent. It's definitely worth the price!

Decided to take the leap and try a multi course omakase night after dabbling with sushi hand rolls here and there. I can’t stress how welcoming and amazing the experience was for someone very unfamiliar with sashimi and sushi overall. The chef explained what we were eating per course and the presentation was nothing short of extravagant. Being that it’s seasonal, I can definitely see myself revisiting late summer or early fall. I believe it was 19 courses or so, including desert. My girlfriend and I were more than satiated. 10/10

We had an awesome time celebrating my husband's birthday at Sushi Kai. Our 5:30 reservation meant we had the chef and staff all to ourselves, which made it even more special. Chef Ryan and Brian were fantastic and made the experience even better. The fresh fish, flown in from Japan and New Zealand, was beautifully plated and packed with flavor. It’s hard to pick a favorite dish because everything was so delicious! My personal favorites were the sea bream, toro caviar with gold leaves, bluefin belly, black cod, and the miso soup made with fish bone broth. It was a perfect Omakase experience for our special night.

I don't know where to start off. This was my first time going to Sushi Kai and I loved it! The whole experience made me feel so relaxed and welcoming. The staff are amazing. Very attentive and friendly! The restaurant is very beautiful, the ambience was very soothing. During the whole experience, I couldn't help but to stare at our chef preparing our food. The attention to detail and everything was so mesmerizing! I'm definitely recommending Sushi Kai to people i know! PS; BYOB!!

Soooo delicious and unfortunately ran late but they were okay with it and laid out the food and appetizers still till I got there and the chef still described everything they served!! 10/10

Great Sushi - high quality fish Omakase Style (chef's choice) 2nd time i've been there. they seasonally change the menu, but it's worth going for the same menu multiple times. seems a little pricey, but it's good quality fish, variety of many dishes, BYOB so you save on the drinks and this time they included some seared wagyu beef. in addition to searing with a torch, they also brought out hot wood charcoal to sear some of the dishes. adds a hint of smokiness. every dish is prepared properly and with the utmost care. will definitely go again.

My husband and I have dined at Sushi Kai twice now and can’t wait to go back. Omakase at both times were as amazing as advertised. Both staffs and chefs are friendly and always make sure that the diners’ need is met. We can’t wait to return with friends.

I had such a phenomenal night. Gary the owner who I had no idea was the owner (found out after ) was soooo kind that he offered me a glass of wine and even though I said no he insisted and grabbed me a glass from his own and offered it to me. That kind of hospitality isn’t seen in America too often now a days. The food to say the least was amazing!!

I have always been a fan of sushi, everything from your local hole-in-the-wall no name place all the way to Nobu and Matsuhisa. Sushi Kai is above Nobu level. Sushi Kai is EASILY the best tasting, freshest and most well prepared sushi I have EVER had. the restaurant is quiet, and very intimate and personal, each party being paired with their own personal chef for the evening, there are 14-ish rounds of increasingly tender and delicious sushi followed by ala-carte selection (YOU MUST GET THE KOBE BEEF) and then a brulè'd tamago, and the most delicious dessert, baby peach with gold leaf. The owner and chefs are incredibly knowledgable and passionate about the food, and it really shows. thank you so much for a fantastic and memorable dinner JUST REMEMBER ITS BYOD

Amazing 18 course meal with each bite creating a memory. They seem to use the most fresh and high end ingredients from otoro, chu toro, truffles, and caviar. Don't come here if you intend to leave full.

J

If I could give it 10 stars I would. Emmy husband and I are very particular about sushi but even more so with Omakasa. We have experienced many Omakasa experiences but Sushi Kai blew it out of the water. The moment we walked in and sat down we knew this was going to be amazing and it was far better than I could ever expect. No place will compare so don’t even try to find one. Can’t wait to go back!

I have been here 2 times and if I didn’t have 3 little kids at home I would have been here for every birthday/anniversary/celebration I could. The freshness and tastiness of the food is by far above the rest. I can’t say enough great things. I recommend this place to everyone I can. Can’t wait to go back!

Went here for dinner the other night and it was an amazing omakase experience. The staff are so friendly and knowledgeable in what they’re serving. Go hungry! Also it’s BYOB so bring a bottle of sake or white wine!

Sushi Kai in Fort Lee isn’t just a sushi restaurant — it’s an experience. Every piece of the omakase was insanely fresh, perfectly balanced, and served with a level of care you rarely see. The flavors hit in layers, the pacing was flawless, and the staff made the whole night feel personal. Easily one of the best sushi experiences I’ve ever had. Worth every cent.

We had an outstanding dining experience here last night. The host, Simon, took great care of us from the moment we walked in to the moment we left. The atmosphere is cozy and relaxing, the service was very attentive, and the food was as delicious as it was creative. The price is competitive. We've been to many omakase-style Japanese restaurants but this one is our new favorite. We will surely recommend Sushi Kai to others and return in the near future.

This is my favorite omakase spot. Each course was thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented, with the chef walking us through every piece. The progression of flavors was perfectly paced from delicate, buttery cuts of toro to bold, umami-packed uni and melt-in-your-mouth seared wagyu. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to experience sushi at its finest!

Must visit! I celebrated my anniversary here last week and it was nothing short of amazing! The staff was very nice and welcoming, the food was one of the best sushi I have ever had, the restaurant itself is beautiful and the dining experience is one which needs to be experienced by everyone. Thank you very much for making my anniversary that much better, must visit for everyone!

Food and service are fantastic. I do wish the order some of the dishes were served was a bit different (more polarizing dishes like sea urchin not coming towards the very end). It’s a great place for an evening out. You can easily chat because it’s not too loud. Service is very attentive and great.

I really love the clean, simple aesthetics of this place. It really focuses on the star of the show - the experience. There are varying courses, ranging from nigiri, small bites, to fun & innovative pieces. Everything is extremely fresh and prepared right in front of you. The chefs are engaging and lovely to talk to. It’s a really nice experience to taste a multiple course meal with fresh ingredients and intricate flavors. I don’t think it’s super expensive, you definitely get plenty of courses, but the pieces could be bigger. At $150+, I do appreciate the range of courses that are offered; to my knowledge, the experience is refreshed often. FYI - it’s BYOB!

2025 Different chefs who were not engaging. Quality sushi and dishes but the variety of presentation and tastes were gone. Most of the sushi sauces tasted the same or lacked flavor. Byob is a plus and they are attentive. 2024 w Pictures. Front of house was not welcoming but cold. Luckily Jonathan the sushi chef and Brian? (glasses with hair bun) attending to the sushi counter, were exemplary! Counter area is in a tight and narrow area but still gave an airy feel. Clean counter with nice glass and dishware. Appetizers and sushi presentation were nice. Quality of fish and subtle sauces with varying tiny flavor toppings enhanced the sushi vs mask. No extra soy sauce needed. The varying and numerous one bite tasting pieces were spot on. Don't expect huge sashimi slices with mounds of rice to soak with soy sauce. This is not that kind of place. The finale of flavorful miso soup and the tiny dessert of black sesame creme brule was a perfect ending to a very generous experience. For the quality and quantity of the dishes, $155 omakase is a deal, though not for frequent visits. BYOB can help the wallet and they attend to it as if they were selling it.

Good food, great service, not a traditional omakase experience but a fun time Made reservations for a friday night with a friend. Byob - there is a local shop that delivers so i thought that was really cool and convenient. One of the hosts recommended a sake to go with our meal. Also got a Sapporo. Everything was not super formal and it felt like we were at a hip bar. Chefs are not Japanese if you care about that. Immediately noticed that it wasnt a true omaske style where each dish is prepared right in front of you but there was some batch preparation- there were two chefs and there were 10 guests. My partner also had some allergies which they were attentive too This was fine. Each dish was excellent with some unique flavors mixes. Temperatures were right - rice could have been a tad but tighter. Everything was excellent with the exception of the sea bream dish which tasted very average. Dessert was also nothing special just a black sesame cream brûlée - top could have been thicker. Service was great hosts were very attentive and kept everything clean. Chefs were friendly talkative and its a great place to meet people - shared some sake rounds with our neighbors. Recommended for a special occasion but i believe there are other places with better food for the price.

We booked new year eve dinner. Overall the experience is very nice and food was delicious. However it takes more than 2 hours which is too long for us… would like to finish within 2 hours. BYOB, bring your own bottle (drinks)

The fish selection could’ve been better. Also not a lot of hot and cold dishes, mostly nigiri it felt pretty ordinary overall. But if you don’t want to bother going into the city I guess this would suffice.

G
Gray Fox

All it and all it was good not great, and definitely not worth 155$ per person, for 155$ they needed to make this an 18 to 20 corse meal with with option of wine or saki heck Japanese beer or soda selection as part of the reservation. Bring it down to 120$ unless you are going to add more to the menu. Also that restroom needs a lock and somone to clean it. On the hour an a half I was there ya made 1800$ at least buy a lock for the rest room. Also put yellow tape on that step heading out, that’s a lawsuit waiting to happen.

M

Omakase experience was good but nothing stood out to us in terms of fish selection, prep and presentation. The restaurant has very bright lights which doesn't create a romantic experience. Overall it was okay, there are better options out there.

J
Johnny cheng

Overall price of omakase was on the expensive side for the quality that was served. The sushi was ok but again I've experienced better at non omakase locations. Overall staff was decent but one issue is the expectations from all the chefs quality/presentation of food was different. Our main chef has only been there for about 40 days he told us. He did a great job but when comparing presentation across all chefs the standards where different. Overall not worth the pricing and creativity nothing worthwhile.

Food is mixed review : while few items were good , the rest were just ok , no “ Wow” experience. Service by chef was nice but the manager rushed us out by 9 pm . Yes we were 30 min late to the 7:30 reservations , but to make us cruise through the menu in 60 min , then not let us stay to talk and relax was rude ! Even if it’s was 90 min instead of 60 , no one wants to pay $150 and get kicked out ! Oh , and the 3 additional pieces we asked for ? $50 additional ! So $250 with tip to eat fast and leave because they want to go home …? Not for me or my friends . We all agreed we are not coming back .

M
Michelle P

Its a nice small sushi spot. The fish is good but idk there just something missing in my opinion. I wouldnt call this traditional omakase and more of a fancy sushi restaurant with a slapped on price tag. My sushi rice fell apart in one of my pieces and another piece my fish was holding on for dear life. To me this shows improper technique and for the price being paid everything should be close to perfect. Especially if management claims experience ranging from 10yrs+. The man curating our dishes was very nice. I just wouldnt return.

H
Henry L

Booked under Nikki Nguyen, january 2, should be contacted to fix this.. Invite for another try or partial refund or something.. Overpriced..! The starting ones are great but the few pieces of fish sushis towards the end are small and average.. Definitely felt ripped off.. Sigh.. Jersey.. Your prices arent right.. My lovely wife's hard earned money to treat me to my birthday.. Smh.. 155$ each? A brutally bad deal.. Look at these pieces of fish sushis and tell me if its worth that insane price..

B

Don’t make reservations and then have the audacity to get sick or have an emergency like my son did. He was charged $310 for canceling!!! Outrageous

T
Tyler B

Overpriced. Not worth it for the fish they serve. Had two mackerels, one tuna, two seabream, one salmon, one shrimp. with tip cost $450 Fatty tuna wasn’t fatty had 0 flavor. No crab? No eel? No uni? Rip off. Fish barely tasted like anything. Don’t bother with your money here.
