Opinions de Union Jack Fish & Chips Fountain Valley
Been here for years, consistently fresh, big pieces of fish, good prices. Soft and tender inside, crisp outside, easy way to eat fish that's a bargain (considering how much actual fish meat you get) versus hamburger chain fish burgers. Amusing reading the free British paper they have here, wall stocked with a small array of British jams, biscuits, and snacks.
A great place to get your fix of Fish & Chips as well as Shrimp and other menu items. If you've ever been to an H-Salt Fish & Chips, then this will be familiar and I'd say even better (This used to be an H-Salt). Bonus points for being able to order a Cold IRN BRU or IDRIS Fiery Ginger Beer (Non-alcoholic). But even better, you can shop a selection of British Groceries (My favorite - Mc Vities Digestives which are great with a cup of tea - Dunk or dip them for maximum enjoyment). (Yes they sell British tea bags as well).
My wife introduced me to Union Jack Fish & Chips! Never really was a fan of fish and chips. But this place........WOW! Turned me completely around! I love fish and chips, namely Union Jack's! We live only a few miles west of them and try to go as often as we can! I always get their 3 piece fish and chips(or 4 if I'm really hungry)! No other place compares!!!! SO AMAZING!👍🏽❤️👍🏽
👍 GOOD VALUE, GOOD FISH, GREAT 'CHIPS' & NICE STAFF ✔️ The owner is very nice & always happy every time I have been there. ✔️ Small dining area is clean, comfortable & they have a few outside seats. ✔️ They feature some British candy and treats which are very interesting to see. I have bought a few of them in the past, Violet Crumble and the Aero bar were good. I actually like to this area of the small shop, it is so different from treats in the U.S. ✔️ Prices are low, not cheap, but a good value. The fish & chips are always cooked while you wait...they seldom ever use the heat lamps for any length of time. OVERALL A COOL LITTLE PLACE TO GRAB A MEAL, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE TIRED OF TYPICAL FAST FOOD & GREASY "HEAT-LAMPED" FRENCH FRIES (CHIPS)
I've been trying to find a place that served fried clams. This is a small place with British groceries. Great fish and chips! The shrimp, scallops, clams and chicken were really good as well. The food was not greasy and they serve it on paper plates, so you can really tell if it's greasy or not. The owner was very nice and friendly.
I was a frequent visitor to their old Costa Mesa (closed years ago) store and the Fountain Valley when I worked nearby in HB. I like their food. The fish isn’t too fishy or smelly and it’s a pretty good size. It’s best to eat the food right after they make it (let the fried mushrooms cool down or you’re going to burn your mouth). They also sell some frozen items (bangers, scotch eggs, etc.) along with some items from the UK (HP sauce, canned goods, teas, cookies, chocolate, candy, etc.)
Casual spot for excellent food! Instantly became our go-to for fish and chips, great portions and great tasting. Small restaurant so you may want to order to-go during busier times (there's only about 4 tables). They also sell British candies and snacks!
Always great the owner is super friendly the staff is kind and there is nice outdoor patio
Best fish and chips in Huntington Beach area. Fries/chips are stellar. Always consistent, tartar sauce is the only thing lacking in flavor. Just tastes like mayo with a few miniscule chunks of pickle.
It's like the shop got teleported from UK. It's the quintessential fish and chips you find in every corner back in UK. Small indoor space, just a fryer and a counter in front. Just the right amount serving and price. Fish come out hot, crispy but moist inside. If only this shop was across the beach. Will be coming back for sure.
We love the authentic food. Friendly service. They also carry hard to find English specialties and favorites on the shelves in the small dinning area. We definitely recommend Union Jack's!
We are visiting from England and this was such a great find. Loved the decor, just like a traditional fish n chip shop and seeing all the English food products that we could buy from the shelves that we can't get elsewhere like chocolate hobnobs, digestive biscuits, shortbread biscuits, Aunty's steamed puddings, Birds custard, Mars and Cadburys chocolate bars to name but a few. The fish and chips were delicious. Crispy batter. Smaller pieces of Pacific cod which is slightly different from our whiter Atlantic cod. We ate in there but they do take away orders which are wrapped in newspaper like they used to do back in the UK. The shop has been there since 1967 - it's a great reminder of home.
Best fried fish I've ever had,I will not go anywhere else , but this place for fried fish and chips, they're onion rings are so light and puffy and crispy , and so is the fish
My wife and I have been eating here for over 20yrs and we moved away a couple of years ago. So every couple of months we make the 90 min. drive and hit our favorite restaurants in the area and Union Jack's is always on the list
As authentic British Fish and chips as you can find in CA; Absolutely delicious every single time and stepping inside is like stepping into a traditional Chippy in small town UK.
My wife wanted Fish & Chips on her birthday. So glad I found this place. It's so hard to find a good Fish & Chips place, and even better, an authentic English style one, there's not many. This one just happens to be really good! The Fish (big pieces) was perfectly seasoned to add Tarter sauce or malted vinegar to taste. I had the onion rings as well, honestly the best I had that I could remember. Wife had the zucchini chips, and she loved them It is a simple place in a shopping center, so lots of parking to get in and get out. I hope they do well, support them! This place is a real gem!
Very authentic great fish n chips - friendly service plenty of seating inside and out. Lots of big pieces of fish. And they had mushy peas! (I'm from the UK 🇬🇧 so I was very impressed) they also had a huge section of packaged British food for sale
Great old school place in Fountain Valleys Ca.. in a busy small strip mall..Small inside seating. The owner and his staff work super hard to prepare the food fresh and fast! It can get busy, worth the wait! We share a 3 piece Fish&Chip with med size cole slaw a it’s plenty! They also have fried chicken, shrimp, scallops, calamari..The onion rings and fish are bomb.com!!! 🔥Definitely Rec this place! It’s always good to Support Local neighborhood businesses.
Union Jack Fish & Chips My wife and I made the 30-minute pilgrimage from Torrance, drawn by whispers of a proper chippy. Growing up in Leeds, I still remember the smell of vinegar-soaked paper and the thrill of cheap, golden comfort food — something The King’s Head in Santa Monica does well, but not exactly on a “working man’s lunch” budget. Union Jack sits tucked in a strip mall (a promising omen for authentic food), and we were greeted by the sight of several folks already tucking in — another good sign. The man behind the counter wasn’t British (no accent detected), but the welcome was warm, so we kept an open mind. We ordered two rounds of fish and chips: two generous pieces of fish, a mountain of chips, all for under $20. By the end, we were both stuffed and smiling. The chips were spot on — soft inside, crisp outside — and the fish? Perfectly battered, with that glorious crunch that would make any Yorkshire lad nod in approval. The setup’s simple — plastic cutlery, paper plates, indoor and outdoor seating — but the food does all the talking. And to top it off, they’ve got a little section of British goods for sale. We walked out with biscuits, frozen bangers, and a bottle of Barley Water (they were out of Ribena, sadly). Verdict: 9/10. Delicious, filling, and authentically humble — just how fish and chips should be. We’ll definitely be back for round two (and maybe to see if Ribena’s back in stock).
Union Jack Fish and Chips is a real local gem. It's a super small place located in a local strip mall with plenty of parking, so getting in and out is always easy. The food is definitely the star here. Everything is made to order, so it's always fresh and hot. We always make sure to get the hush puppies they are a must-try! If you're looking for fresh, affordable, and delicious fish and chips, this is the place to go.
It’s an authentic British Fish and Chips with delicious fish, the fries made right like in England as I’ve had several high quality dishes in London! I got the London special to do. The place isn’t fancy and you’ll smell the fish fry. However next time I’ll eat the items even sooner as today was to go yet still good!
Friendly staff fish and chip came out fast, delicious and price right only $8.99 for 2 piece with fries and the fish itself it big.
If you grew up on H Salt fish and chips, this is the place for you!!! The food is excellent and very reminiscent of an HSalt, if you are ever in the area definitely do not pass up the opportunity for excellent fish and chips
What a pleasant surprise! Delicious and fresh! The batter, the flavor 😋 the snacks! I'm sorry I didn't take food photos... it was just so good. We got the fish and chips, a side of calamari and a side of the oysters. I want to go back for fish and shrimp and oysters!!!
This place is the real deal. Easily one of the best fish and chips I've had in Orange County if not the best so far. You might convince yourself the near $30 price tag at places like santa monica seafood would give you better fish and chips but it's not the case. the batter here is crispy and much more delicate. not heavy and greasy like the beer battered options. I paid $12 for 3 giant pieces of fish. the value is fantastic and the quality is good. only complaints are that the inside can use a thorough dusting (don't look at the fan) and that the fries have potential to be a lot better. tbh if the fries resembled something closer to European chips I would pay another $10 for this plate happily.
Fun place to try something new and pick up some British goods while there.

Definitely will be my go to fish and chips spot! The food at this place was amazing and the manager was really nice. I ordered the fish and shrimp combo with fries/chips on the side and it was among the best ive ever had. The food was crispy and cooked to perfection. I also love that they sell British groceries, and have traditional sides as well such as Mushy Peas. Thanks for the great meal I will be back!

We arrived 15 minutes before closing - the gentleman working was very friendly. We asked if still okay to order, (he was cleaning the small sitting area to close for the night) he stated that it was perfectly fine to order. We did! Took our order to go and it definitely reminded us of England. Plan on going back!
Small little place to get fish and chips. The price is comfortable and the fish is delectable... it is so crisp and crunchy without being hard like a dorito. Super flakey. Needs some seasoning but I assume this just gives you more command over how much salt you want on your food. The food is made to order and so good. I'm pregnant and it's one of my cravings this time. My husband who doesn't like seafood also enjoys the fish.
This is a great fish and chips shop. The fish and chips were hot, crispy, and delicious. The portion sizes were large and the prices are very reasonable. On one wall they had a English grocery shelf. Only a couple tables but looks like most their business is take-out.
I've been coming to Union Jack's for years now and have to say, they have the best fish and chips around... Hands down! Every other place where I've tried their fish and chips, I've compared them to Union J's and they have all failed! If you want to have some of the best around and enjoy some treats from the UK (they sell some imported items inside the restaurant) then Union Jack's is your place to go!

The food is good, but they only give you one small tartar sauce for ever two fish you buy. You should be given 1 tartar sauce per fish filet.
This place offers authentic English-style fish and chips, serving up classic fried fish, shrimp, and fries just like you’d expect. The prices are reasonable and budget-friendly, and the staff were polite and friendly, which made the experience even better. The only downside was that the batter—or maybe the fish itself—could’ve used a bit more seasoning. I didn’t check if there’s a restroom available for customers, so I can’t say for sure. The seating area could also use some updates to make it more comfortable and inviting.
First time here. Ordered 3pc fish and chips. Based on negative reviews, I was hesitant to even go, but haven’t had fish and chips since Gordon Ramsay spot in Las Vegas. This was ok…batter was crispy, not too oily, however had little to no flavor/seasoning. Had to use vinegar to give it some flavor. Fries were average. Service a bit grumpy, but expected it based on reviews…must’ve been the same grumpy old white guy. Wouldn’t go back again as would say not worthy of my $14.
First impression is that this place is small on the inside. Not too much room for dinning in maybe about 12 people fit inside. The guy that is taking your order is the owner I’m assuming, he’s not super welcoming, he’s just there waiting for your order but no greeting at all. It was our first time there so we didn’t know what to order, we had to ask the cook about the menu since the owner wasn’t the friendliest. The cook was nice and explained how everything worked. The prices are not bad they are about average, the food was good. The food took about 15 minutes after we ordered it. I would come again if I was in the area but wouldn’t go out of my way to come here

It's a fairly good attempt at British fish and chips (I'm from London). The fish is frozen fillets like Birds Eye, rather than 'fresh' fish, so don't expect anything too authentic. A UK fish and chip shop would not survive with frozen battered fillets. Having said that, they have curry, mushy peas, good chips and it's as close as you will get in HB. They also have a ship area with all of the British everyday items that you might miss as an ex-pat or tourist - hp sauce, colmans mustard, hobnobs, double Decker, bisto, marmite, Heinz baked beans, sarson's vinegar, birds custard, Ribena, Robinsons, Branston, etc. Lovely staff, Cafe type seating, reasonable prices.
Went hunting for good fish and chips. This spot came highly reviewed, so we decided to try it, even though several other good places near the beach had also been recommended. Some family members said this was as close to the fish and chips they’ve had in England, though I feel a chain in the Pacific Northwest does it pretty well, too. Malt vinegar comes standard with the order, so you don’t have to ask. The scallops we tried were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. They even had mushy peas, which weren’t the best but also not bad. Even in England, you can find the full range of results when it comes to mushy peas. I’m not sure I would make a special trip just for the fish and chips again, since it was quite a drive from where we were staying. However, if we happened to be in the area and had a hankering for good fish and chips, this would definitely be a place worth stopping by.

I ordered scallops and they were crunchy but the inside was kinda mushy and just not cooked too my liking. It also had a lot of the scallop water in them when you bite into them. The guy that answered the phone was rude bc I was asking questions bc I've never been there before.
I went in there at 8pm and they close at 8:30pm but I was shooed away. If you don't wanna take orders after 8pm then close at 8pm.
Had really high hopes for this place. Truly disappointed in the food, the fish was very bland as were the chips, Ive had fish and Chips all over the world as its one of my favorite dishes, this is by far one of the lowest ones Ive ever rated. I literally ate 2 bites of everything and placed it in the trash can and left. Least the can of Coke was good.
