Opinions de Otto's German Bistro Fredericksburg
5 Star Restaurant. The service and the food were amazing. Came here today with my wife and dad. The duck schnitzel, pork shank and wurst plate were so good. My pork shank was out of this world. The flourless chocolate cake was so tasty too. Great German beer selection.
Fantastic restaurant with a wide variety of options for the entire family. Visited this gem several months ago and was blown away with the flavor combinations. Me and my husband are huge foodies and we pretty much licked the plates dry here. Service was great, the waitress made fantastic recommendations. The restaurant is small and you probably need a reservation if you're dead set on eating here. We happened to walk in and the right time, they were booked solid but still found a little corner table for us to get cozy in for dinner. Highly recommend this restaurant if you're in the area, it's one you don't want to miss! 1
Visiting Fredericksburg we decided to try something different for us. We lucked into seats at this very popular restaurant. We were seated without a wait. They had a very good wine selection and an ample supply of German beers. My husband ordered the Paulaner, I ordered a glass of wine. Both were delicious. We also decided to try their pretzel with mustard and cheese for an appetizer. The mustard was so good with a delicious German pretzel. For our main course we ordered the bratt for my husband and I had the schnitzel. We finished with black forest chocolate cake. All perfectly prepared and delicious. We will be back.
We brought our 11 year old grandson who ordered one of the two Schnitzel's on the menu - my wife and I ordered the other one. Delish. Very kind server who was engaging and attentive. We love this venue and the town of Fredericksburg. We'll definitely be back!
Fantastic service, we stopped in for a pretzel and some dessert. Found an amazing whiskey list will too much to experience in one night. The pretzel was outstanding, we could not decide on the chocolate tort or the black forest cake so we got both. Very rich and decadent. This is a definite must visit when in town.
Amazing servers, amazing food, and great drinks. The menu is German inspired and the quality is astounding. They have a great selection of cocktails, wine, and imported German beer. The schnitzel was amazing both the pork and the duck, someone in our party also ordered the lamb chops which were also incredible. The appetizers also didn’t disappoint. I would highly recommend this experience.
I have been craving schnitzel and wurst meal. Otto’s doesn’t disappoint. I just wish they poured more of that gravy sauce on the schnitzel. I kept going for the garlic potatoes. The wurst was tasty. But the bacon was winner in this plate. It came with a beet chutney. I like beets. Now I just need an apple strudel and I’m set. Service is friendly.
Absolutely amazing experience! The food was superb, the wait staff were all very attentive, and it was such a nice atmosphere for a nice night out. Within my group, we had the: Brot Und Butter-the jam was not my favorite (although the other 3 in my party loved it) but the butter and bread with a little salt and pepper was so, so good! Flammkuchen- My party raved for this dish! It was gone very quickly and was loved. Duck Schnitzle- So delicious! The breading was good, the sauce was good, all around very delightful. Wurst Plate- my husband RAVED for the haus mustard on this dish! The sausage was amazing, just a very savory and delicious dish! Pierogi- this was my dish and I almost didn't want to let the others taste it! This potato and cheese pierogi dish was absolutely delicious! From the sause to the red potatoes to the asparagus, it was just absolutely delicious! And it was so filling! Definitely recommend to anyone!! Overall this was a truly amazing experience and I can't wait to go again!
This place is fantastic. The food is delicious, well-made, and nicely presented. It's got a very local, cozy vibe. And their bar is well-stocked with a variety of options. I love the duck schnitzel and the lamb chop. Be aware, their desserts are very dense and bold in flavor, so choose wisely.
Went with my dad so he could try German food. He had the sauerkraut balls (a dish they created). He absolutely loved it. They looked like hush puppies or falafel with a drizzled, creamy mustard sauce. He and I have only ever eaten canned sauerkraut -- which I dislike. They make they're sauerkraut daily and it's delicious! I generally avoid meat and dairy, so I wasn't sure what I could eat there. Our server Violet and the chef came up with a delicious sauteed melange of artichoke hearts, mushrooms, onions, new potatoes, grape tomatoes, and English peas. It was as good as it looks in the photo!
We stumbled across this place while in Fredericksburg for an anniversary trip and so glad we did! It was delicious! Most people here seemed to be on a date so I’d say this is a little more romantic than your average restaurant. It was also packed, so I was optimistic, because I had no clue what we were walking in to. Make sure to take a trip to this upscale farm to table restaurant. You won’t regret it!
I ordered sausages as an appetizer — they were delicious and not too salty. Another dish was chicken — tender and tasty. The duck was decent, and it paired well with red wine. The food didn’t take long to arrive. The servers didn’t come over too often, which I liked. The restaurant opens at 4:00 p.m., and I arrived a bit early. Since it had just opened, I got in right away without a reservation — especially easy if you’re just 2-3 people.
The food was great! I love the salmon poached egg toast (forgot the name of the dish)! The inside of the restaurant is a little crowded. If you have more than 4 people, I recommend you to sit outside. It was hard to move around with tight space between tables inside the restaurant. It’s right across the street from the museum. You can eat here and then go back to the museum if you like. Just remember to keep your ticket for re-entering the museum.
We did a walk in around 5p on a Friday and luckily it was not busy and they served us. The appetizer of scallops was amazing. I had the pork schnitzel and my bf had the steak. Schnitzel was amazing but also my first time trying it. Reviews suggest the steak is not good however my bf cooks hjs own steaks and wanted to try; he said theirs was not the conventional steak but still good and he was satisfied. They’re famous for their homemade cheesecake but unfortunately that was a dud. We had their seasonal one which was pecan and it literally had the flavor of vomit…which was quite interesting. We aren’t sure what the cheesecake was supposed to taste like but the candied pecans tasted fine. Staff was excellent. I wanted to return the cake and let them know it was terrible but my bf did not want to cause issues and despite not liking it…he ate half of it
Outstanding! Delicious food, drinks, and service. . Knowledgeable bartender. Our birthday celebrant especially enjoyed her lamb.

Excellent food and atmosphere! Pricey but well worth it. Waiter was prompt and friendly. Make reservations because place is small and fills up quick. No menu options for kids.

Good overall experience. Good German food. Good wine choices. Very small place. Reservations required, but not hard to get a few days in advance. Hostess didn't know anything about wine, fireplace was disabled even though it was in the low 40s outside and a strong chill inside. Too cold for me. Ambiance was okay. Maybe could use some appropriate music at a low volume. I'd consider coming back, but wouldn't rule out other German food places nearby. I'd say it was as-good, but not better than others. They need to do something to stand out.
Overall a good experience. Duck Schnitzel topped w/fried duck egg, spatzel, and rot kohl was excellent. Wurst Plate with sauerkraut, gerken, zenf/mustard, and roasted potatoes was good and much like we have had in various parts of Germany. Manager (I believe) stated they were understaffed when we entered. Not our problem and seemed like an excuse in advance for any bad service or waiting. One server was bussing a table outside and dropped a fork when coming inside, then kicked it. Managers should work on professional conduct. Our server did great but forgot we had not paid after leaving the check with us. She eventually came back and closed us out. She did apologize. Lastly, prices are a bit elevated for all menu items. Probably won’t be back.

Disappointing Experience – Didn’t Meet Expectations I had higher expectations based on the online booking process, which felt quite formal and professional. They required a credit card number to secure the reservation and clearly stated there would be a $20 per person charge for cancellations made less than 24 hours in advance. That level of strictness led me to believe we were heading to a place with excellent service and attention to detail. Unfortunately, that was not the case. From the moment we arrived, we didn’t feel particularly welcomed. One of the most basic things you expect at a restaurant—especially for brunch—is a warm and friendly atmosphere, with staff that make you feel comfortable and cared for. Instead, we had to keep flagging down our server just to place orders or ask for anything. There was very little attentiveness throughout the meal. As for the food, it was decent. However, the pricing felt off. For example, a very small portion of bacon cost $7, which seemed excessive given both the portion size and the overall experience. In the end, nothing about the food or the service stood out in a positive way. It was underwhelming, overpriced, and not somewhere I’d return. There are plenty of other spots that offer better service, value, and atmosphere.
Not nearly as good as it used to be. Lamb chops were small & overcooked. Brat plate was a bit dry. Server was sullen. Deserts we took home were inedible & we threw them out. Such a shame because Otto…

The food was okay, some dishes worked better than others. There are several other German restaurants near by that have better food. The service was lacking, multiple tables were seated, order, received their food, and left, before we received our entrees. After about an hour of waiting after we ordered we received our food and were told they were short staffed, I didn't really buy this are we watched as other tables that were seated after us receive the same entree that we ordered. Additionally we were a party of two and waited about an hour to get our main entrees. In this time our server stopped by our table one time and we had to call someone over from the bar to check on our food. The atmosphere is nice and intimate, the dining area is quite small but nice. The size of the restaurant added to our frustration as there were only 8 tables in the main dining area and it seemed like we were just forgotten about.
