Friendly and attentive staff! The German food was fantastic.. We enjoyed the lunch Jageer and Weiner Schnitzel made with Veal (the way we prefer) instead of pork. An added bonus was you had to go down stairs to enter the restaurant which on a 100 degree day was nice and cool. Went back for the same meal for dinner approximately 2 months later and see ice and food were not up to the standard we got at lunch.. Still enjoyed the meal, but some items weren't done the same and cooked as well 😔
This is our second time to visit this hidden gem. The food here is always amazing. Tonight our party started with the most amazing spinach artichoke dip and followed with artichoke chicken, Greek salad, and Rathskeller salad. The portions are huge and the flavors are fresh. The atmosphere is perfect for dinner or lunch. Highly recommend this local gem.
Our first stop to eat here in Fredericksburg and it was a really good one. Amazing German food but plenty of other choices as well. A quiet, almost hidden location directly on main Street yet 1 floor below the sidewalk. It has a neat speakeasy almost secret feel about it. The desserts are also delicious and made fresh daily. And of course, plenty of wine choice to accompany the food.
First time dining here. It was a plan B pick actually but had an A experience. Served quickly with a kind server. Cool little basement space that's bigger than you'd think from the outside front. My daily special 14 oz pork chop was fantastic. The cherry chipotle sauce is delicious. Spot on kraut and tasty bacon green beans. I didn't try my wife's dish but she finished it all so I assume it was good! She said it was very different then other pasta dishes but in a good way so consider that. We will be back here again for sure.
We wanted to try out some of the German food while we were in town because its not very common where we live. The food was really good just seemed a little underseasoned, I'm not sure if that's just how authentic German food is or not though so it was really more of a personal preference. The restaurant, like most places in this area, was super unique. It was pretty quiet while we were there and me and my husband really enjoyed it.
Absolutely fantastic! Such a fun, cute atmosphere- you walk downstairs to the little bistro that has a very simple southern charm decoration to it. We were promptly seated and the service was attentive, timely, and friendly. I ordered the veggie omelette - it surpassed even my most positive of expectations. Very well cooked and loaded with fresh veggies. The mozzarella was delicious on top. The breakfast potatoes were perfectly cooked. And the biscuit was light a crumbly. Best omelette I may have ever had. The menu has a lot of great looking options as well. Everything was priced so well. You get a huge, delicious breakfast at a very reasonable price! I would definitely come again!

We were visiting Fredericksburg for the very first time in order to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. Being of German background we wanted a place that catered to German food. The Rathskeller was one of the few open restaurants during this time of the week. In order to get the food for a particular time, I called in my order. I ordered Jaegerschnitzel and my wife ordered Fettuccine Alfredo with a side order of Sweet Potato Fries. The food was OUTSTANDING. I was very pleased with the quality and taste as well as the price. We would definitely visit this place again. They had my food ready when I arrived and when I got back to the room the food was still hot. Very enjoyable! Just a note - Watch the stairs, they are very steep; but such is the nature of "Kellers".
went in with a group of 10 at lunch time and was sat immediately in a practically private dining room, only shared with one other table for two, (poor couple). seemed like everyone enjoyed their food. We got spinach and artichoke dip that tasted great, and the chips had a great crunch. I got the Twisted Caesar Salad. The chicken was flavorful, the veggies were fresh, the avocado was perfectly ripe, and the dressing wasnt fishy (iykyk).
This is a small bistro under street level near the Albert Hotel. The service was excellent, and the staff was attentive. Our lunch included chicken fried chicken and a Cajun style red beans and rice and jalapeño and cheese sausage dish. My companion didn’t like the chicken much, but we both loved the sausage and red beans and rice. I might try it again, but even if I don’t, it was a nice lunch.
While visiting I noticed the menu had shrimp. Me not in the mood for German food decided something else would have to tickle my fancy. The restaurant from the main street is located down some stairs underground, which intrigued me and created mystery as I walked down. Once inside it was pretty basic with limited seating especially for large groups. You can also peer into the kitchen from most seating as it is close by leaving you hearing the cook staff. I ordered the Texas Gulf shrimp plate, priced reasonably for what it is and being Fredericksburg. The creamy cole slaw was delicious if you are into that sort of thing. Shrimp was cooked perfectly, and both the fries and shrimp were yummy dipped in the Creole sauce. However, beware if you would need to get another sauce because I was charged a dollar for an additional to dip my Shrimp and fries into. After lunch I was curious about dessert. The waitress recommended the Peach Bread Pudding stating it was the most ordered item amongst patrons. When it arrived I was hopeful, but upon the first bite of peach, bread pudding, and the cool whip or whipped topping I was less delighted. I have had way better Bread pudding in other locations and was not particularly happy with the taste. The wait staff was attentive and courteous upon arrival and during my lunch leaving me no empty glass. Overall, I would come back for the Shrimp, but I would try a different dessert. Happy Travels and Enjoy
This is a cool little spot. Really cool how you enter a cellar to go to this restaurant. One suggestion I have for the cooks is the crab dip should be served cold if possible. It is like a chunky avocado pico mix with crab. It being steaming hot through me off. I do not know if the crab needs to be hot but the hot avocado was not my cup of tea. The spinach and artichoke dip was delicious. We were just stopping in for a quick end to the day bite as we were full from walking the Main Street and sampling wines.

Unique little restaurant down below street level. Schnitzel with gravy and mushrooms was really good. Wife had chicken salad that was very good!

Interesting dinning experience. It was different but in a good way. We will comeback. No complaints here. Nice atmosphere. Good food.
We ate lunch here & it was very good. Had the brat lunch & one had the Rueben. We all were happy. german potato salad was very good. We would definitely come back.
Hubby and I ate here on 2.19.26 for brunch. We had been looking forward to it based on their menu and reviews. Sad to say that we were disappointed. The man who greeted us and brought our drinks..... his attitude was about as bright as the room. Not friendly to us, at all, but very nice to a table on the other side of the room. Our waiter, Frankie, was the exact opposite..... nice, friendly, helpful. He's the main reason I'm giving 3 stars. Hubby got the omelet loaded with bacon and sausage, fried potatoes and white toast. I got the 2 egg plate with bacon fried potatoes and white toast. Hubby's plate looked amazing.... omelet was huge! My plate..... my heart sank when I saw my sunny side up eggs had a brown ring od crispness that usually means they were cooked too long. I tried the potatoes first and wanted to spit them out. These were not fresh potatoes made up that morning and they weren't frozen. These tasted like they had been in the frig for a few days to serve as needed. They were both dry and rubbery, no crispy exterior and 1had a horrible taste to them. I gave benefit of my doubt and tried a second bite with salt and ketchup. Did not help. Hubby did the same as I..... push the potatoes as far away as possible since they were inedible. My eggs...... tough, bottom cooked too hard and had a very distinctive grease flavor. Bacon.... tough and crispy, like it had been reheated/recooked. Dry toast and water were the only things on my plate that were fresh!! Hubby's omelet.... he said it was great with good size pieces of sausage mixed throughout. I don't like leaving bad reviews and criticizing an establishment but I have been cooking for way too many years and know when I'm not being served fresh food. Considering that most of the pics I see posted are lunch/dinner items, maybe that's what they lean towards and not so much towards their breakfast. Just know I won't eat here when we visit Fredericksburg again
The atmosphere at Rathskeller Bistro was okay—not particularly memorable but comfortable enough for a casual meal. Customer service stood out as a highlight, earning 4 stars thanks to the attentive and friendly staff. The food, however, was a bit underwhelming. While the menu offered variety, the pretzel appetizer left much to be desired, with the dough being too thick and lacking the light, chewy texture you’d hope for. On the brighter side, the dessert was quite good, a satisfying end to an otherwise average dining experience. Overall, Rathskeller Bistro is worth a try for its decent service and desserts, but the food could use some improvement to match the charm of Fredericksburg.

Just bad vibes from this place, as well as meh food. The staff looked like they worked in the back at Walmart, although our server was a nice young man. The food was godawful. My wife and her mother got the "Greek Salad." Instead of a made-up salad in a bowl, it was just scoops of SEPARATE things - lettuce, feta cheese, some strips of chicken, and a little bowl of dressing. I guess customers are supposed to bring a salad bowl and toss it themselves. It also came with ...yuck... hummus. But they deleted that on request, thank goodness. My wife just nibbled on her chicken strips (which were flavorless) and a little lettuce. Her mother didn't eat that much. She's been eating in restaurants with us for 40 years, and said, "that's the ugliest thing I've ever seen in a restaurant." I got the Reuben sandwich. It was OK, but was NOT like any Reuben I ever ate. It had sourkraut, thin layers of ham and burned turkey, melted cheese and some kind of sauce. No pastrami. It was just "food," and absolutely not a Reuben. Oh, and it came with a scoop of potato chips. Wheeeee. One note from a trip earlier this past summer: this woman on the staff was wiping tables with a rag, using the same rag with no spray or anything. It was a little warm in the place, and a couple of times she would pause and wipe her face and all around her neck with that rag, then continue wiping tables with it. Gag. So this place is off our "go to" list.
Walked in and sat down at a table. Ordered the avocado crab dip it was ok. Noticed water dripping on me and on the food. It was coming from the ac vent nothing new in texas so moved tables to get out of the rain. Ordered the pork chop special and it was to dry to eat. The more you chew the more it grows in your mouth. Potoaes are either instant or theu have to much sour cream in them. The green beans taste like they are cooked in black liquorice. First and last time Here for sure .
