Great pub with some excellent staff- couldn't do enough for us. Dog friendly. Food was very good and a high standard of quality and presentation. Close to purdey shooting school. Ideal retreat. Would definitely stay again. Keep up the hard work guys
We visited this pub some time ago before the refurb and loved it. But since the renovations it’s taken itself to another level. The food is exceptional and we loved being able to watch the chefs at work. I think they also benefit from seeing customers happy faces when eating their food!! We had steak the first night and Brill with chicken butter the next. I can’t remember the last time we had such a memorable meal. Absolutely delicious!!! Breakfast is a delight as well. The atmosphere is wonderful and I don’t think it will matter whether you come in the winter or summer you’re bound to have a wonderful time. The staff are lovely and the newly decorated rooms are spacious and comfortable. The weather was atrocious so our dog was left behind, but we really can’t wait to return with him and enjoy the walks and peaceful location. Well done to you all for creating the most fantastic destination pub we can’t wait for our next visit!!
We only ate at the restaurant, and did not stay in a room. But our meal was fantastic and so was the service. I have a food intolerance and that was dealt with really well. I wasn’t made to feel like I was being a pain, which unfortunately you can experience at some eateries. The service was friendly and attentive and I felt like if I had any issues or concerns I could approach a staff member if I had needed to. Thankfully, I didn’t. The cost isn’t something you can avoid, it is on the more expensive side. That said, we both felt the cost versus what we received was fair. We ordered a range of tapas and mains to share, and loved everything. It’s very clear the quality of ingredients used aligns with the prices. We will definitely be returning for another visit. A lovely hidden gem, with amazing views of the Berkshire countryside to enjoy.
Absolutely stunning meal, totally unexpected! Quality was top-notch, flavours carefully curated. We had the tapas and felt we could have been in Spain, totally authentic. The service was also excellent - lots of vegetarian options but despite this the kitchen were happy to make tweaks to other dishes to open them up to use as options. An absolute gem of a place. Thoroughly recommended.
Amazing birthday meal for my wife, worth every penny. Incredible food and service
Great RESTAURANT in the middle of nowhere! The food has a heavy Spanish influence, the atmosphere is relaxed, and the service is exemplary. We were not staying, so I can’t comment on the rooms but as a restaurant this has been a favourite for some years now
I stopped here once for a very late-night and short stay. The hosts were very welcoming and kind, joking with me about the lateness of the hour. After a phenomenal night's sleep in a beautifully furbished room, I had the most delicious breakfast I have ever enjoyed at a hotel. I travel all across the UK for work and have stayed in well-over 100 places. This Inn is in my top three favorite places to stay and I endeavor to stay here any time I'm able to. Food? Phenomenal. Service? Generously kind. Location? Exceedingly peaceful and restful. Aesthetic? Homely and calming. This is a must-stop on your travels around Reading or anywhere off the M4!
I can’t sing The Pot Kiln’s praises highly enough! We had dinner and stayed here to celebrate our anniversary and it was the perfect place to do this. From the moment we arrived every detail was thoughtfully considered. The bed was comfortable and pillows were exactly to our liking, but had they not been, there was a note saying we could ask for different ones. The room was large, beautifully decorated and (importantly) quiet. The shower was luxurious and super clean. We had a phenomenal, memorable dinner with a view into the kitchen. Every dish was superb & I would highly recommend the pigs ears, the ribs, the veal tartare and the wine! Fantastic wine list and excellent espresso martinis too. We had a hearty breakfast in the morning before a 10km walk which started and ended at the pub. Given the recent flooding, this required walking boots! Thanks to all at The Pot Kiln for such a welcoming, comfortable and memorable stay. We will be back!
Brilliant experience at The Pot Kiln. Service was top-notch – really friendly and helpful staff. The food was outstanding, some of the best I’ve ever had. Gorgeous views and such a relaxed, holiday-like atmosphere. The manager was especially welcoming. We’ll definitely be back – can’t recommend it enough.
In the most scenic area. Hidden gem and the most beautiful pub and lovely rooms. My family stayed here for Easter, it was the perfect country getaway. Food was great, service was great and the pub with the views all around was just sublime. Highly recommend for resonated getaways for family’s.
Lovely drinks, food, welcoming staff. Beautiful views. Can't fault it!
We had wonderful food today to celebrate my husbands birthday. The staff were so nice and very helpful and they even did a special happy birthday treat which was so thoughtful. We have come to this lovely pub for years but not with the new owner and superb menu. This is a place you will love and the rooms look so nice we will definitely be back to stay. Also has beautiful walks around. Thanks all for making our afternoon so lovely and welcoming.
Wonderful lunch at the Pot Kiln with my wife and mother-in-law. The menu is very different, with both an a-la-carte and a Set Lunch menu available. Basque-inspired menu was a really pleasant change to the usual pub fayre, and the quality throughout was exceptional. For starters, I enjoyed the Beef Ragu with Beef Dripping Toast, which was amazing, along with the Grilled Friggitelli Peppers and the Tomato Toasts were also very good indeed. For main we had the Catalan Fish Stew, Baked Cod & Creamed Leek and Lamb Breast with Salt-baked Beetroot - all were lovely, full of flavour and beautifuilly presented with perfect portion sizes. The sides we chose were the Beef Fat Hash Browns, Chips with Jamon, Idiazabel Cheese & Bravas Seasoning and Parsnips & Manzanilla, all of which were lovely, but the star was the Hash Browns which came with a delicious Horseradish Cream, so light with a wonderful texture. The open kitchen was great, as we sat opposite and could watch the chefs at work - their attention to detail and skill level was plain to see. The service was simply perfect, from the moment we entered the pub, and throughout the meal. Our server was attentive but not intrusive, knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the food, which added to the overall experience. I would highly recommend the Pot Kiln - my first visit, and a bit a drive from Wokingham but certainly worth it. I am sure that in the summer its location will be a winner, nestled as it is in a beautiful valley with some lovely outside tables to enjoy the view while you eat. We are blessed with many good gastro pubs around this area, but for something a little different with exceptional food, wonderful service and a great dining environment, you really should consider popping over to Frilsham for what I am sure will be a memorable meal.
My experience at the Pot Kiln was fantastic from start to finish. We booked a meal and rooms for a group of people for a joint 50th this weekend. The communication from the office team was thorough and informative, and left me feeling confident that our requests were being met. Our experience on the actual weekend was great. Our dietary requests were met and the service from the whole team from chefs, servers, waiters and bar staff was fantastic. All overseen by a great manager who pitched the service and attentiveness’s just right for us. We all thoroughly enjoyed the food, and the set menu was great and the price felt very reasonable for the quality. Our rooms were lovely , and the delicious breakfasts followed by a fantastic country walk rounded the weekend off perfectly. We will definitely be back, and be recommending you to friends. Thank you
Can't comment on rooms as didn't stay but did have a wonderful Birthday meal here. I had the lamb breast with parsnips and savoy cabbage and every element of the meal was absolutely delicious, very good quality food! Fantastic staff, all of which were polite and very welcoming. Beautiful building worth a visit.
Went to The Pot Kiln for lunch with family after having already discovered it a few months before. Still hands down one of the best gastropubs food-wise I’ve ever been to. Incredibly innovative flavours that just elevate the ingredients. I was absolutely stuffed ordering way too many tapas plates by the end, but so satisfied. The pub might not be the most direct of places to get to, but totally worth the slightly windy journey for the food.
Didn’t stay at the hotel but came for lunch on a Sunday - booked in the snug Amazing food and service and a really extensive menu Picturesque views will be revisiting in the summer to sit and enjoy lunch outside 10/10 would definitely recommend
We had the set lunch at the Pot Kiln....fabulous food and fantastic service...with a competitively priced menu! The Iberian inspired menu is full of flavour and well presented...From the padron peppers to the Catalan fish stew to the Basque cheesecake with macerated berries...the flavours are nicely balanced and cooked to perfection! Moreover, the great selection of wines nicely complemented the amazing food! The countryside of Yattendon is an idyllic setting to enjoy fantastic food and brilliant service at the Pot Kiln!
Another great pub in Berkshire, friendly staff and good food. Dogs welcome and plenty space outside. Sat in the beer garden today as the sun was shining, glorious place to sit with the dogs and mull over life on my way home after a walk on the Ridgeway.
Amazing stay! Travelled for a family wedding nearby. This was the perfect bolt hole to get ready and then come back to and relax. Highly recommend!
Incredible food, really well designed menu. Had a range of starters (crab croquettes, tomato toast and gambas) which were all divine. The 72 hour slow roasted lamb shoulder was the star of the show, cooked to perfection and the flavours of the salsa verde were delicious. The crispy jamon chips and hispi cabbage went so well with it. Can’t wait to come back
Stayed the night. Arrived just before midnight but manager was extremely helpful making arrangements so we could access the room when the pub had already closed. Room was very nicely decorated, good facilities (tea/coffee) and quality soap products in the bathroom. Bed was extremely comfortable. Breakfast was included in the price and it was very tasty! Nice to see that they catered for gluten intolerance. Very nice location and very quiet! If we lived nearer we would consider going for a meal as the menu looked very appealing. Would definitely return.
We stopped in for lunch and it did not disappoint. Great service with a really friendly team that were very attentive. There was a great selection on the menu and it was delicious! We were advised to select 4-5 dishes for the two of us and it was a great shout, filling but not too much - nice selection of veggie food as well. The location as well, stunning! Beautiful views of the countryside. We will be back for sure!
Wonderful country pub and restaurant nestled in stunning scenery with superb walks nearby. Pop in for drinks and nibbles, bar meals or for a full dining experience.
Fabulous countryside setting, tasty, fresh, well cooked food and friendly service. Rightly popular with a good vibe. The croquetas, the lamb, beef and bass were outstanding, so to the charred leaves and the beetroot with nuts. The highly visible kitchen led by head chef Nick consistently delivers innovative and tasty dishes.
Absolute gem of a place tucked away well off the beaten track. Stunning food one of the best meals I’ve had in a long time. Will certainly be heading back.
Super tapas lunch with friends - delicious food and great service. Gorgeous location
Really enjoyable overnight stay. Staff refreshingly open, friendly and efficient. The venue has a significant uplift what was there previously - which we did enjoy, but this is much better. Rooms are much nicer, service very good, and food interesting. Breakfast was great. We gave some suggestions on minor improvements which were happily received. Will be going back!
Exceptional pub in a stunning location. Amazingly attentive and friendly staff, superb food and a brilliant line-up of beers and wines. This is our no.1 destination🤩
Fantastic little hotel and restaurant. The food, both dinner and breakfast was very good. Being able to see the kitchen is always a good sign. Staff very friendly.
Lovely food, beautiful setting and a good menu. Worth a visit!
I love the Pot Kiln. For me, it strikes the perfect balance of informality and professionalism. Friendly, but not overfamilar. Still a pub, but unmistakably a quality restaurant. The food is exceptional. Great ingredients, flawlessly prepared. It's in the middle of nowhere, but we'll worth the drive.
Just perfect, lovely place for meeting friends and enjoying the best of Spanish cooking with local ingredients. Slept well in the room and breakfast provided a good start for the day. Many thanks, looking forward to seeing you again!
From all of our stays in our honeymoon this was so far the most fantastic one. Originally we didn't even plan to stay here but a car accident forced us to find accommodation nearby. After a great dinner I have to thank the tyre-fairy for letting our tyre explode just in the right location, as we just had the most delicious spanish dinner in our life. I can only recommand booking a stay here, the rooms are cosy and very comfortable, the service is fantastic and the food just outstanding!
A lovely and unexpected find down a winding country road in West Berkshire, beautifully located with fine views over bucolic countryside, friendly cows in an adjacent field and very nice, engaged and helpful staff. This is so much more than a pub with rooms, it’s thoughtfully considered, from the stylish decor in the bedrooms, busy restaurant with a view of the chefs bustling away, great outdoor seating areas and a menu focused on North Spanish dishes, small tapas plates and richly sauced meat dishes. We look forward to our next stay.
The food is good here (certain dishes are great) but the service really lets it down. No one seems to have a proper eye on front of house; we asked for an outside table when booking but on arrival were told that they were all reserved. There's no proper welcome and we had to ask several times for drinks/cutlery/the bill. No one said goodbye as we left. The staff are generally young and uninterested. It's a shame as the tomato salad was outstanding, as were the prawns and crab croquettes. The crispy pigs ears were stale however as were the cream cones for dessert. This sort of location relies on repeat visits, I don't think we'll rush back.
Great rooms - newly refurbished with large showers and comfy beds. Only downside was that there were no windows - only doors to the patio so no ventilation. Unusual tapas food with Spanish style mains. Food was good although my cod was a bit overcooked and my husband's coleslaw was bitter. Slow service - we had to get our drinks from the bar as we couldn't attract a waiter's attention and at breakfast we ended up getting our yoghurt 'starter' from the pass as we could see it sitting there! Lovely fresh honeycomb at breakfast and hit good cooked to order. We will definitely go again.
Hidden gem. Great pub and lovely location. Sitting outside looking out onto the fields and not hearing road noise makes this pub a lovely place to sit and have a drink. Didn’t have food on this visit but watching the plates walk past my eyes to the tables of hungry people has made me want to visit again and have some food. Would also like to try one of the rooms out for a special night away with the hubby.
A lovely old pub in the middle of nowhere, which we first visited around three years ago when the menu was based around game and offal and we had an exceptional meal. Our latest visit was on a Monday lunchtime and although it was obvious that the place had changed hands and the menu now had a Spanish bias, we were happy to give it a go especially as we enjoy good Spanish food and wine. Unfortunately we were disappointed. The "Catalan" fish stew was the worst dish, with a predominance of salmon which I would not have expected to find there. A lot of the fish had stuck to the bottom of the incredibly hot dish, and it felt as though the sauce had then been poured over the top rather than the dish cooked as a whole. Beer carrots with chives - too sweet and if you can't make dehydrated chive dust taste of anything, what's wrong with fresh chives? Again the "Thai green curry sauce" under the cod pil pil tasted of absolutely nothing. We kept being asked if everything was ok, and at that point you have to say well yes, because it's an appropriate temperature, as described and unlikely to poison you so in that sense you can't complain - it's just not very good cooking. It seemed that the base ingredients were of a decent quality but the cooking was lacking, the flavours just weren't there. It's also far too expensive for the quality of the food. And please, find a decent Rioja with some body and tannin. There are plenty out there at around £7 in the supermarket which would be better.
Mixed. Compared to when we've been previously it was a little disappointing. We really liked the game based menu but it's now gone quite Spanish and we aren't convinced this work for the Pot Kiln. Whilst I don't mind paying for quality it just wasn't really at the level you'd expect. It wasn't bad everything was cooked ok. Deserts were better than mains. The kicker was service. Whilst some of the staff were switched on and attentive we sadly had some weirdness. Took a very long time for our drinks to arrive. Plates were cleared when people were still eating etc. Perhaps they are still learning. I guess the bottom line is that this pub is in a very affluent area and maybe they don't have to try hard to charge these prices. Compared to how it was a few years ago it was a disappointment and we will be reluctant to go again. Shame when this used to be one of places we'd go for a treat night out.
This pub / restaurant / B & B is a quaint pub in a quiet and pretty valley. The people are friendly and efficient and made us very welcome. The food is tasty and enjoyable, but the "tapas theme" limits the choice and after our first meal we were keen to eat elsewhere. The rooms are adequate for a night or two. The heating in our room was erratic and for long periods we froze and then we were too hot. The gardens are well looked after but someone has decided to strew random rocks, many of which are on the paths and proved to be a bad trip hazard, not only to the 90 year old couple in another room but, after dark, to all.
We had lunch there. My lamb dish was nearly all fat so very disappointing. Others in the group fared better but nothing beyond standard pub fare. Service was great, just a shame about the food given the prices.
What a shame. Came here for lunch on a lovely day. First, some things were actually very good. The vegetable side dishes, the scotch egg starter. The octopus and prawn starters were pretty good as well. Unfortunately though, there were a number of things that weren’t good at all - and this ruined the experience as a whole. Our 12 hour lamb shank main was dry and overcooked which was such a shame as it was a lovely cut of meat. The drinks were all a bit ‘off’ (not sure the bartenders were getting their proportions right.) Worst of all, the service was quite unbelievably bad. Particularly so given it was not busy at all in the restaurant. Drinks were made and left to sit on the bar while wait staff stood around ignoring them doing nothing. No one asked us how our mains were (which was a particular problem because there was a problem with the lamb) One particularly clueless waiter had probably the most annoying manner of any waiter I’ve ever been served by. He did very little ‘waiting’ and a lot of swanning around thinking he was Gordon Ramsey or something. Very odd. Most disappointing of all was the manager’s attitude though. He actually walked past our table when we were discussing how the lamb was dry (it was quiet in the restaurant as I say and he definitely heard us) and he completely ignored this. I always prefer to speak to the manager if there are problems with a meal rather than just go online and complain after. I know mistakes happen and bad reviews can really damage a restaurant’s reputation. But given he clearly wasn’t interested in doing his job and rectifying a glaring issue I didn’t even bother on this occasion. We left disappointed and won’t be back.
Full disclosure: we didn't stay, just ate so I've put 5 star for room to be fair. This review is purely about the new owners / food offer. On arrival we were greeted by a polite but slightly haughty chap who plonked us on a table and left us there. I had to approach staff to get seated at our booking. Service: After this initial bump the service was impeccable from clearly shattered staff (it was Mother's Day weekend). The servers are an asset to the business. Food: The food was well prepared and ingredients were high quality. However, pricing vs portion size borders on gouging. Two tiny beef bite starters were £11. Seared octopus was delicious but £12 and infantesimal. This greedy price structure reached it glorious zenith when £20 pork ribs came with literally no accompanying food. It was a nice enough rib but to not stick some potato, even a bit of cabbage, on the side is ridiculous. Instead we had to spend a further £25 quid on a minscule potato bravas style dish and some miso cabbage. Funnily enough the best value was my youngest sons chick and chips which so large he couldn't finish it. Tl;dr; B+/A- food, served hyper professionally by lovely people, at S Tier prices and portion sizes. I'd avoid.
Came for lunch. Very disappointing…ordered baked cod as a ‘main’ however this was a tiny portion. Fish stew was also a small dish with a thick, heavy sauce. If these were the mains, the small plates must be tiny. Not good value for money considering the prices £28 and £26. Neither main came with anything, left feeling hungry and ripped off.
Lunchtime dining only review. Stunning location, been coming here for 30 years and it rarely disappoints. Recent incarnation however…. Service: questionable - I asked for a bowl of water for the dog and got told to go and find one outside and that there is a tap outside - zero effort made. Then got told that where we originally sat outside is an area where food isn’t served. Seems serving customers isn’t primary concern. Went to the bar to order a few times and still pay a service charge 😂 Don’t sit on the beautiful grassy tables at the back FYI, no food service available apparently. Food: delicious but portions are tiny so left hungry and crazy expensive for what you get. Overall: massively overpriced, left feeling hungry and ripped off. Won’t be going there again anytime soon. Ironically I’ll be more likely to visit the Royal Oak next (who own the same place). Sadly massively disappointing. Such a shame. If you’re someone who’s got money to burn, you’ll love it. If you appreciate good food that’s priced appropriately then avoid.
