Opinions de La Rotunda Casa Italiana Glasgow
As part of a deal with my friends we are visiting new places for dinner every month this year. This was our first visit to La Lanterna. And we were amazed how a place ao good had passed us by. We highly recommend the arancini pesto salmon and the chocolate brownie. We will certainly be back. We could not recommend this place highly enough.
One of the oldest Italian Restaurants in Glasgow. Generous portions, cocktails are great and the Chianti wine was light too. The sausage and bean stew starter was excellent. The crab and lobster ravioli was sublime. The Tia Maria coffee was the best ever. The rice balls were good and the branzino was excellent. The lasagna was good too. All were large portions, so split an appetizer with your friends or partner. The desserts were superb.
A perfect restaurant experience! Delicious food and amazing staff. The Pasta fagioli soup was so good! The staff surprised me with a birthday candle with some delicious icecream!
It was truly an enjoyable meal. We didn’t have a reservation, but thanks to arriving early we were able to get a table. When we asked for a wine recommendation, they kindly let us taste it first. The food and wine were excellent, the staff was very friendly, and the atmosphere was great. The tiramisu was amazing. Highly recommended!
Undoubtedly 5-star! This restaurant is by far the best Italian restaurant I’ve been to in the UK. Every dish was full of flavor and beautifully prepared. The place was buzzing with people, so making a reservation is highly recommended.
What a great find hidden just a few steps from the station. Buzz through the door and down the stairs into an extraordinary restaurant. Great staff good food excellent dining .make it a stop when you visit Glasgow
A brilliant spot for a festive meal, the decor is gorgeous, like Nancy Meyers Christmas. And the service was wonderful start to finish. Highly recommend for all year round.
Revisited on 30Aug2025, As good as it gets!! 👍🏼 Reservation recommended. Previously, Finally get to dine here and it did not disappoint us, just like other reviewers said this place is a hidden gem! Lovely and inviting ambience, attentive and professional staff, extensive menus and high quality food. Definitely will be back.
Always outstanding, food, cocktails and the service. I eat here alone when visiting for business. The staff always make solo diners feel comfortable, it’s the reason I return.
A authentic and classic Italian restaurant. Service was exceptional.🎀💫💝
Everything looks absolutely divine! The seafood pasta is glistening with that perfect dusting of cheese, the asparagus wrapped in prosciutto and bathed in that creamy sauce is mouthwatering, and don’t even get me started on that dessert (DELIZIA DI DOLCI) platter—pure art. And judging by the menu, dining at La Laterna-Scotland’s Best Italian Restaurant isn’t just a meal—it’s an experience.
All the food was of a high standard and the service was attentive. They introduced a bottle of very delicious white wine. The manager was very talkative and treated us to dessert💗. The only thing was that it was too hot and the location was close to the kitchen. It was too hot to dine while there was no air conditioning in summer.☀️☀️ We strongly requested a fan.🥵
Great restaurant. Pasta was really good & the wine was superb. The lady who served us provided super professional & friendly service. The tiramisu was such a delight and overall we had a memorable experience here. Will definitely come back and highly recommend this place!
Wishing we were back at La Lanterna feasting on their delicious foods. Anyone want somewhere quaint, authentic, friendly to eat out in, in Glasgow, this place is a must. The flavours are scrumptious, and the atmosphere brings back memories of our holidays to Italy. Five stars, La Lanterna, now book me up!
Go to this restaurant don’t bother looking at the prices and order away. 10/10 once again. Second time coming and it seemed better than the last time. The Langoustine was excellent and I would absolutely recommend, along with the mixed seafood pasta which was Devine. My partner went for the carbonara however after a taste she decided it wasn’t the nicest. After calling a server over and explaining the issue we offered to pay for the food and have something different ordered. They insisted on not charging us which was very nice. After the second visit we will once again be back with maybe a few more plates of the langoustine 😋
Food was spectacular, loved every bite, great selection of wines and cocktails. Service was above and beyond. We felt looked after but not smothered and were given plenty of time between courses to chat and not feel rushed at all. Would recommend and will be back. Top notch Italian restaurant! Massive thank you to all the staff for making it a wonderful experience.
My partner and I visited here after seeing rave reviews online. For starters, we shared a "Fritura Mista" which is a mix of calamari, king prawns, white bait, and courgette served with a garlic mayo dip. It was flawless. Quality seafood, seasoned perfectly and so fresh. For our mains, I had crab ravioli in a lobster claw meat sauce. My partner had a seafood risotto. Again, the seafood in both were of a very high standard, fresh, and both were seasoned to perfection. For dessert, I had "passione cioccolato" - an award winning New York style chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream, which was fantastic. Overall, we couldn't have been much more impressed with the experience. Staff were friendly and attentive, the service was prompt, and the food was outstanding. It's the best Italian restaurant we've been to and we will definitely be back
Visited here whilst away in Glasgow. No step free access so was difficult to bring our pram up and down. The food was tasty and service was great.
Excellent meal tonight. I had the prawn with smoked salmon to start and my wife had the bean soup. I then had beef rigatoni and my wife had the ravioli. It was all delicious and the service was excellent. Highly recommend a visit when in Glasgow.
Really lovely little authentic Italian restaurant. Beautiful interior, with friendly staff (I enjoyed our chats), and stunning food. I look forward to coming back. Highly recommend
Went in without a booking and was told to come back 50mins later. It was worth the wait. Was usher to a seat shortly. Requested for recommendation, and the server provided me great advice for both their signature pasta and wine to pair with it. Ravioli granchio was good and I enjoyed it alot. Suggestion: it will be perfect if Parmigiano Reggiano is grated on the pasta upon request. And even better if some Pecorino can be provided to top on the sauce.
Since we were attending a concert, we booked this restaurant about 3 months prior to our event and since there was 5 of us wanted to be guaranteed a table. The menu choices were good, I went with the old classics however my friends all chose different things and they all looked excellent and with empty plates at the end obviously tasted excellent 👌 Reasonable prices for the food and drinks we had. Will definitely be back if I'm in Glasgow again. 😀
What a cute little gem. We went elsewhere first without a booking and was told 60 mins wait. So we saw La Lanterna on Google and we were so glad to have settled for this restaurant. The waitresses were very friendly and helpful. I ordered the monkfish pasta, it was exactly how I imagined. If you like flakey fish, it’s the dish to go for! My partner had risotto, can’t fault it neither. Cute date night spot with lovely comfort food. Generous portions, which we appreciated a lot coming from london…
Our third time at La Lanterna, it’s reputation for the best Italian Restaurant in Glasgow is well deserved. The food is superb and authentically cooked and presented by wonderful and friendly Italian staff, who know their dishes and are proud of the quality of the food they serve you. Fantastic wine list with lovely Pinot Grigio, Trentino and Sicilian Grillo whites, being our favourites, but there are dozens more of all types, reasonably priced. The dishes from the wonderfully light dipping bread, crispy arrancini and mouthwatering scallop starters, followed by veal Milanese with wild mushroom tagliatelle and my wife’s rich flavour packed lasagne were fantastic. I had the Zabaglione alla Marsala which was a revelation and is now favourite dessert!, my wife had the chefs special chocolate mousse which was so light and melted in your mouth, gorgeous. All of this delicious food was helped along with a bottle Grillo too. Not cheap, but I think very reasonably priced for the high standard of the meal and service from the staff and chefs. Quality is not expensive, it’s priceless! We will definitely return. Outstanding Italian restaurant.
I loved everything about this experience. The food was amazing, and the staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Plenty of options both food and drink. Clean restaurant and toilets. Best tiramisu I've had.
Had an amazing experience at La Lanterna. The lasagne was honestly the best I’ve ever had, and the prices were very reasonable. The service was absolutely top tier — so attentive and friendly — and the atmosphere was lovely. A special touch was the staff singing happy birthday to my partner, which was really sweet and made the night even more special. Highly recommend!
Recently booked La Lanterna for a large group to celebrate a joint birthday. Chris and his staff were so accomodating of our various requests and dietary requirements. Lovely atmosphere hidden away from the street with amazing decor. Our food was served quickly, and tasted amazing with nice portion sizes. Could not fault our experience and would highly recommend to others.
I came yesterday with my daughter and partner to celebrate my 40th birthday. The food was absolutely delicious — fresh, beautifully presented, and served quickly. The service was exceptional: professional, friendly, and attentive. Our waitress answered every question with great knowledge and care. To make the evening even more special, the entire staff sang “Happy Birthday” and surprised me with a delicious cake. They truly made my birthday unforgettable. I wholeheartedly recommend this place!
Wonderful evening meal with great food, friendly staff and great bottle of wine. Booked table for 4.15 pm and were seated immediately. Had a wonderful fresh seafood risotto and my wife had a chicken dish. Spoiled for choice with dessert menu. Staff were very friendly and efficient without the feeling of being rushed. Definitely a good choice for a meal!
A gem of a restaurant centrally located opposite Central Station. We had the pre-theatre menu which was perfect when pressed for time and very good value too. With longer, the a la carte looked enticing. Food quality was excellent and the service bith highly professional and friendly. It claims to be 'the best Italian restaurant in Scotland'. Don't know what the competition is, but I can believe it anyway..
have visited 3 times now and never been disappointed. the vitello alla holestein is my favourite dish, it’s absolutely delicious. the garlic bread with mozzarella is also amazing. visited today and despite arriving half an hour after my booking slot, the staff still welcomed us and managed to accommodate us despite being busy.
A most enjoyable meal this afternoon! We have dined here many times over the years and have always enjoyed it. Not been for a while and we’re very pleased to see their standards have been maintained. Excellent service in very pleasant surroundings and lovely, authentic Italian cuisine. Can’t recommend it highly enough! We’ll be back soon!
Great place, staff very friendly and meal was of high quality but reasonably priced. It must be good as there were Italians eating there. Book in advance.
Another wonderful meal and experience at La lanterna - we love eating out and going to lots of different places but this stands out every time. The difference here is the love and effort that's put into everything - from the proper decent wine glasses, table cloths on the table, the professional yet friendly serving staff and of course the beautiful food and wine from an extensive menu. Finally - for the quality the cost is reasonable compared to a lot of lesser places.
Service was mixed. Unfortunately got off to a bad start when the woman checking reservations when you enter just left us hanging for a couple of minutes. She was 2 feet away but wouldn't look up from folding napkins, my wife had to persuade me to not walk away at this point. The waiting staff were however all very professional. Food was mixed. My crostini starter was I presume left over from the lunchtime sitting as it was chewy and was definitely not crisp. The mains were tasty as was the tiramisu. So a mixed bag, but I prefer their west end restaurant.
Called in for an off the cuff lunch date requested by my wife. They were able seat us with no issue and we ordered from the lunch menu which was a starter & main for £20 each. The restaurant is very artfully decorated with an Italian theme throughout. Starters were Pate & Bruschetta Mains Chicken Escalope & pasta with pancetta Unfortunately my chicken was overcooked but was replaced with Fettuccine with salmon wh8ch was superb. Overall, 2 lunches with 2 rounds of drink came to just under £70.
It is located on -1 floor so basically there is no cellar service. The fried calamari is over cooked. It is rubbery. The pasta is good but it is too salty for me. However, I am a light salt cook myself so it is likely fine for most people. The waiter is friendly.
Very good, the rigatoni could be a little less saucy with more pasta and the tiramisu needs more espresso added to the recipe.
Really great food! Loved the vibe of the restaurant! Thankful we were seated without a reservation. The service was generally ok, it was very busy so our server seemed to forget about us mid meal. But overall highly recommend this place!
My wife and I had chicken and mushroom risotto, lasagna, and calamari for a starter. The risotto and calamari were great. The lasagna was good, too, but the sauce perhaps a bit burnt, giving the lasagna a smokie taste. The servers were attentive even with the large number of guests and the atmosphere cozy.
Nice food and both locations are different to eachother in in west end if far superior to the city centre one. Food is tasty fresh and service is standard. If your ever up the west end I would suggest going to this as it's probably one the nicer Italians that side of city
Went for a valentine's night dinner, and despite the high praises I have heard about this restaurant, the experience was pretty lackluster. The dinner service was restricted to their set menu for Valentine's day and one could opt for a 2 course meal for 27.50 each or 3 course for 35 each. My partner ordered a mains and a dessert sharing platter, and I went for a prawn starter and mains. The menu did not state that if you share the dessert platter it will cost extra and after we were reassured by the service staff that it wont be charged separately, when it came down to the billing time, there was an extra 7.5 quid added on top of our 27.50 each. There was also an added service charge, automatically added on top of that, both seems disingenuous to me. I don't mind paying service fee and having worked in the hospitality industry I will gladly hand tips to servers, but this was not acceptable. The extra charge for sharing dessert platter makes no sense, 'cos essentially my partner paid 35 quid for a bowl of pasta and 4 shot glasses worth of desserts. We were told that the server did not know and she explained it to us incorrectly that it would be included in the price, and only after asking for clarification was one given to us. She also quickly went on to say that she would be happy to take off the service fee, as if doing us a favor while admitting to the fact that she gave us misinformation while taking the order. The whole situation left a bitter after taste, although the main course pasta was pretty good. The dessert platter portion wise was very disappointing especially considering the extra charge. Food was decent, I liked my risotto but the whole billing experience did not leave me with a positive impression of the place.
I had heard so many great things about this place, and I was excited to finally try it. Let me start by saying—the food was spectacular. Beautifully seasoned with a light, creamy sauce Ravioli, the dish was rich in flavour yet light. I finished it quickly—not because I was rushing, but because it simply wasn’t very filling. The atmosphere of the restaurant is elegant and aesthetically pleasing, which made me look forward to a cosy solo dining experience. However, I was disappointed to be seated alone at the very back of the restaurant, in a tight spot right next to what looked like wine storage or rubbish boxes. It felt out of place, especially given the restaurant was nearly empty when I arrived around 7pm. It took away from the experience a little. After my meal, I had to wait around 10 minutes for the bill, which added to the sense that solo diners aren’t quite prioritised here. That said, the food really was a highlight, and I would return—but I hope next time the service and seating arrangement will better match the standard of the kitchen. A place with such excellent dishes deserves to offer an equally thoughtful experience.
I was a bit disappointed that the linguine wasn’t as al dente as I expected. The Penne Pollo was enjoyable at first bite but became a bit heavy later, and the chicken breast was too dry. The tiramisu was moist, but the sweetness was more pronounced—personally, I prefer a better balance of flavors. However, the service was warm and welcoming; everyone was kind and cheerful, making the experience pleasant overall.
Normally we dine in the west end restaurant but decided to give hope street a try. from start to finish it was fantastic, good atmosphere and really pleasant service from the staff. food was amazing and portions are really good. only downside to our evening was we were given fresh olives and bread which we thought was a nice little touch. we don't eat olives and choose not to eat all the bread as we where about to have a big meal. was disappointed when we seen the bill and was charged £8 for something we didn't actually order. didn't bother saying anything because at that point we had already had 2 slices of dread. I also heard another table saying they never ordered the bread and olives when we were leaving. just wonder how many times this actually happens.
La Lanterna is a family-run Glasgow institution known for its characteristic basement setting and dark wood beams. Given its reputation as one of the city's oldest Italian restaurants, I arrived with high expectations. Unfortunately, the experience was quite lackluster. We started with the fried calamari, followed by mains of Crab Ravioli, Penne Broccoli e Pollo, Pasta Carbonara, and Sausage Risotto. The portions were inconsistent; the Carbonara was significantly smaller than the other dishes. Furthermore, the chicken in the penne was bland and tough—seemingly boiled—which was very disappointing. The dessert platter also missed the mark. The "50-year-old recipe" Tiramisu was surprisingly dry, while the Crème Brûlée was watery, though the cheesecake and mousse were acceptable. The most sour note, however, was the service and billing. An automatic service charge was added, which felt disingenuous given the inattentive service; we had to find a different waiter just to order dessert and hunt down our original server for the bill. When I questioned a "No Tax" line item on the receipt, the waitress was defensive and provided conflicting information before abruptly offering to remove the service charge as if doing us a favor. Her demeanor was stern, and she left without a word of thanks or a goodbye. While the risotto was good, the unprofessionalism and poor "aftertaste" of the service mean we won't be returning. We still left a tip, but her rude departure ensured we won't be back. A legendary name doesn't excuse poor hospitality. Despite the high praise La Lanterna often receives, my recent visit was disappointing. While the basement setting is charming, the food and service failed to live up to the legacy. The meal was a mixed bag. While the risotto was enjoyable, the Carbonara portion was tiny compared to the other mains, and the chicken in the penne was tough and tasteless. Dessert was equally hit-or-miss; the Tiramisu was oddly dry and the Crème Brûlée was watery. The real issue was the unprofessional service. After struggling to get our server's attention all night, we were met with a defensive attitude when questioning the bill—specifically an "optional" service charge and a confusing "No Tax" label. The waitress became visibly frustrated when we asked for the service charge to be removed, despite her lack of attentiveness.
Made a booking in advance was looking forward to this restaurant we don’t get to treat ourselves often due to work schedules, after seated was waiting a while then ordered drinks a male server came and asked if we ordered we said only drinks but were ready for food he responded oh I only do drinks walked away , food ordered and starters ok calamari wasn’t crispy and lukewarm nobody checked in on us, mains came out my partners main was cold tried to get someone’s attention but we just gave up I got a mixed seafood pasta calamari was so tough I had to pick it out, I asked the server for Parmesan cheese she never came back. I would be more understanding if it was busy but at the time it wasn’t. We then ordered dessert and coffees which took a while also and once we had them we were told they needed the table back so we rushed them asked for the bill waiting and noting tried to get attention one girl looked at us but continued to walk away then approached by the supervisor I’m guessing by the different uniform saying they needed the table we informed her we were still waiting for the bill to pay. Just had good hopes planned this for ages after researching restaurants as we don’t treat ourselves often and left disappointed. The lady in the different uniform to the other staff looked like she was frustrated by the other floor female staff. We then went to leave waiting to collect our coats felt awkward in the doorway and also in the way I just grabbed our coats myself.
In my all meals in Glasgow n Edinburg, it was the worst one. I've ever thought this meal made me throwing up afterwards. The food outlook was pretty good. However, the food was so salty. That made me wondering if the salt was no cost and so the chef put loads of salt in the food. I fell sick once I went back to my hotel n then threw up. Therefore this is a place not worth so much... I would blacklist this restaurant. I've never thought I would have such horrible experience - I paid so much but made me feel so horrible
Would not recommend. I had pre-theatre, cold pate piped into a small pot (very cold obviously came right out of fridge and looked like very 80s style) the toast was cold and had been pre-toasted so was stale. Main I had baked seafood pasta - meant to be with breadcrumbs but was panko breadcrumbs - did not work with Italian food, when I mixed in became a paste! I would have expected nice toasted bread (stale ' could have used the pate toast and it would have been nicer!!) Better Italians in Glasgow, this one is trading on previous good reputation.
I am very disappointed after today’s visit. I had been here before and was very satisfied, which is why we decided to come again today. We made an online reservation, and since we arrived in the area a bit early, we stopped by to ask if we could get a table sooner as we were already hungry. We walked into the restaurant and experienced something we’ve never encountered anywhere else. We stood there for over 10 minutes waiting to be acknowledged. Several staff members walked past us multiple times, looked at us, yet no one reacted. It felt as if they didn’t care about the guests at all. I understand they might have been busy, although it didn’t seem that way. A simple ‘we see you, someone will be with you shortly’ would have been enough — but instead, they completely ignored us. After waiting, we simply left because we lost the desire to eat in a place where the staff clearly doesn’t care about its customers. I have never experienced such unprofessional behaviour in a restaurant. We will definitely not be returning. We went to another Italian restaurant afterward — one from which you could truly learn how to treat guests. Not recommended!
