Might be the best Guinness I've had in Dublin. They got good music, history ( one of the oldest pubs in Dublin ), ambience (doesn't get any better) and the food. Cannot complain. They make really good pasta btw, you should give it a go. I would also recommend the beef cheeks, loved it. Would definitely visit again, when visiting Dublin, ofcourse.
Great Hooley. A little cramped but very good food and excellent table service. Entertainment was superb. At €70pp for a 3 course meal and music & dancing, we weren't sure what to expect. Definitely worth it, and they don't rip you off with the drinks prices. Coach to & from the venue from central Dublin for €10pp return is a cost efficient (if long) way to travel there. Definitely recommend the Johnny Fox.
We came here for a family lunch, hoping to also get a nice view of the countryside, but Storm Matilda had other ideas! So, entering this lovely looking place and feeling the warmth from inside, was even better. It's a very busy pub, but you get a really warm welcome from the excellent staff, and the place looks great with every wall adorned with "stuff". The menu had a good choice of options all based around traditional Irish and pub favourites. I went for: - Irish Lamb Stew: A classic combination of stewed lamb with diced potatoes, carrot, celery & pearl barley, topped with puff pastry - "Famous" Whiskey Cake We had really friendly, efficient service and the food was really tasty. The Irish Stew was a very generous portion full of meat and veg in a really tasty gravy. The Whisky Cake was dripping with whiskey - delicious. A great place for a really lovely, family lunch. This is one of my favorite restaurants. Everything here is beautiful, and the food and the atmosphere. We've been countless times, and we'll definitely come back again and again. Be sure to book a table, otherwise there's a very high probability of just not getting in and not eating these goodies!
I had the chef’s special and it was absolutely delicious. The rustic and traditional atmosphere made the experience even more enjoyable, and the live music created the perfect touch. I truly loved everything about this place – from the food to the warm and authentic vibe.
A real, authentic Irish restaurant. I definitely recommend making a reservation because it gets incredibly crowded, and it has happened that we couldn't get a table without one! The food is delicious and prepared quickly, and the service was fast and kind! The atmosphere of the place is exceptional, I recommend it to everyone who visits Ireland :)
The pub was very busy and we couldn’t have dinner because we hadn’t made a reservation. We arrived at 5:30 pm and were told the earliest dinner slot available was 8:30 pm, so we just had a couple of beers and left. The place was packed, with a great atmosphere, and the dishes looked really good. Inside it looks almost like a museum — a very original and authentic place!
This is the most fabulous old fashioned pub in the Wicklow mountains. We had the most tasty lunch of vegetable soup and mussels and lamb stew and the Beef and Guinness pie. The food was amazing, the service was fantastic and the vibe is so full of tradition and steepth in history.
Highly recommend at least one visit here. Staff are friendly and very helpful. Food is of a high standard, presentation is good. Portions are just the right size. Children's dishes available. Sometimes the music can be a little loud, we always opt to sit away from the music hall. Rustic with a lot of old memorabilia adoring the walls and ceilings. Unsure about restroom as I've never had to use them while I was there, but if the premises is anything to go by I'd say they are fine. They do take walk ins, but I'd recommend a booking just to be sure. Choose your time accordingly, summer season is always busy, Christmas season also.
Top score for a fantastic pub. We booked a table, our server was Charlie, She was excellent, I have severe dairy and egg allergies, nothing was too much trouble and everything was checked out thoroughly, thanks to Noelia and the chefs I had beef cheeks with an alternative to the mash, thank you. We enjoyed drinks after by an open fire. This is such a unique place. We stayed over in the carpark in our campervan and had a lovely night sleep , we will definitely return, hope the beef cheeks stay on the menu.
One of Ireland’s oldest pubs, situated up in the Dublin mountains. As soon as you arrive and walk in, you can sense the Irish history and tradition within the pub. Beautifully decorated and very nostalgic. The food is also excellent and reasonably priced for how popular the pub is. The prawns are cooked in a nice buttery and spicy sauce. The main are decent size. I was too stuffed to try dessert but they looked fantastic. Only problem is I had to drive so I could only manage one solid pint of G. Would have loved to had 9 more. If you’re in Dublin, do find the time to have a meal or evening here. You won’t be disappointed.
An amazing place with incredible food, service, and atmosphere. I highly recommend the lamb shank and the best seafood chowder I’ve had in Ireland.
One of the best places to take people when they are coming to Ireland to visit, you could book a tour or rent a car to go there but it’s not worth it, I’ve eaten there 5 times and all of them the food was great! Book in a advance if you are going on a Sunday because it’s packed. I will come back there whenever I can.
Five stars in each category! Great traditional pub atmosphere, lots of vintage items displayed. Food absolutely gorgeous, we order seafood chowder and Irish lamb stew both delicious. Frequently live music, what else you need?
Our experience at Johnnie Fox’s was outstanding. The food was exceptional — beautifully presented, perfectly cooked, and bursting with flavour. The slow-cooked venison was absolutely outstanding, incredibly tender and rich, and perfectly paired with its accompaniments. You can truly taste the quality and care in every dish. The service was excellent from start to finish. Lukas deserves special recognition: he was warm, incredibly professional, and genuinely attentive throughout the evening. His knowledge of the menu and his recommendations were absolutely spot on. He made us feel welcomed and well taken care of, adding a personal touch that elevated our evening. We were delighted to spend such a special night here, and we left feeling grateful and impressed. Highly recommended.
the staff are lovely and the place is constantly overcrowded with people because it's so good! we felt amazing there, the area is beautiful, the decorations are astounding and we particularly enjoyed the duck drumsticks. overall, absolutely fabulous! thanks guys!
After a long day of hiking , we made a reservation there. The combination of the the stew (amazing taste) , the hot red wine and the warming atmosphere was the best choice. The place looks like a live museum , I would definitely recommend it!
Great food, lovely atmosphere, and excellent live music — the whole experience truly reflects the traditional Irish pub vibe. The dishes were delicious, and the environment was very enjoyable. The only downside was the service: unfortunately, the waitress was not very cordial, which slightly impacted an otherwise great experience.
First of all it was my first time there for my birthday and i was absolutely amazed by place , service, food and music Booking is required Steak is very good but sea food is more recommended as pasta was 20/10 Totally recommend for nice dinners and next time will be there to see show as booking is crazy and need weeks in advance for weekends Thank you for making my birthday so special ❤️
Wow... The food is NEXT LEVEL. If there was a pub rating scale for Michelin Start, Johnnie's would definitely have one. The interior is superb, I'll go there just to gaze at the decor. Atmosphere is obviously amazing.
A spot worth the drive and visit! Superb service, exceptionally delicious food. We had fish, lamb and stew and everything was absolutely stunning, fresh, tasty and superb portions! My visitors were very happy with the place!
Priced fairly for the quality and quantity, Jonnie's Fox Pub delivered a memorable dining experience. We left full, happy, and already planning our return. Highly recommend for anyone craving delicious seafood in a charming, welcoming setting!
Visited Johnnie Fox’s and absolutely loved it! The food was amazing – the calamari was the best I’ve ever had, and the Guinness pie is a must-try. Great experience overall!
We had a lovely dinner there. The food was amazing, the service was fast and very polite, even though it was very busy. There was live music to entertain us during our meal. Booking a table is absolutely necessary.
It is a very touristy place, and it can get very busy, but it is a definitely worth a visit! The food is amazing, I had the venison dish, and it was devine. The service was nice as well.
A wonderful pub in the Wicklow mountains with true Irish charm. Great food, live music and traditional dancing create an unforgettable atmosphere. Warm, welcoming and full of character — a must-visit if you want to experience the real spirit of Ireland!
great food and theres so much history around the pub + it’s so well decorated and staff are really friendly. we went on saturday night for dinner and it was crowded but service was still fast and we didn’t have to wait that long for our food either!
Lots on display here. Plenty to look at in the interior and exterior. Food was really quite good. Fish'n'chips was a proper fish: large and not overly battered. Music inside was at a good level and lent to the atmosphere. Service was excellent. The food came out quite quickly but the quality made it clear that there was no chance it was microwaved. They clearly have an excellent system at work in the kitchen.
Had dinner here on a Saturday afternoon, good crowd, parking across the road and beside pub, well worth a visit, you won't be disappointed.
We had a wonderful evening at this traditional pub just outside of Dublin. It was part of a dinner event, and everything was exceptional. I started with a creamy potato and seafood soup that was delicious, then a lamb stew and a dessert... I was completely full by the end and almost sad I couldn’t eat more! The evening continued with live traditional Irish music and dancing. The performers were amazing, often involving the audience. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a traditional Irish evening with great food and entertainment!
Absolutely amazing experience! Fun upbeat music. All the musicians are so talented!! And the dancers so much fun! Most amazed by the wee little girl who was a dancer!! Menu is a set, plenty of drinks and they do offer "virgin" cocktails as well 😊
Always a nice experience at Johnnie Fox's. The food is always nice and the staff very attentive. Great Guinness 👍 Live music, busy as usual even during the week.
What a wonderful experience, a taste of the authentic atmosphere of Ireland. We would definitely recommend this one to visitors and tourists. The windy remote roads into the pub, take you on a journey and the food, music and dancing carries you the rest of the way into the evening. The character of this place is oozing out of the walls. The food was really great, the lamb shank was so soft falling right off the bone. It was so good I forgot to get a picture of it.
Established 1798, feeling like museum, in- and outdoors, really very good food (a bit more salt though would be preferred 😇), lovely views on the landscape scenarios including sheep’s….a must-visit when being close to Dublin, topped with service always smiling!
Iconic place with a lot of history that is definitely worth a visit when you are in Dublin! A lot of world leaders and celebrities visited the place as well. It is not accessible by public transport so you will have to make arrangements as the pub is located on a hill! Beautiful place, loads of history in their decor and setup. Food was amazing and they have live band and dance performances on certain days. Folks were super friendly and welcoming! They were on point with food and orders. All in all, a 10/10 experience.
A great place for a pint and a bite to eat. Johnnie Fox's pub is great for both tourists and locals. The entertainment is first class, the food is to die for and they know how to pour a good pint. It's a busy pub for a good reason.
Lovely pub. Best enjoyed if you reserve a table but also nice to pop in for a drink or two.
Johnnie Fox’s Pub, Ireland’s highest pub, is an absolute gem! The atmosphere crackles with live Irish music every night, and the professional Hooley show (Irish dancing) a few nights a week is a must-see, busloads of people come for the vibe, and it’s easy to see why! The place is alive, the food is hands-down the best I tasted across Ireland, and the staff’s warmth is unmatched. Gavin went above and beyond with some truly amazing recommendations to make sure my experience in Ireland was unforgettable. Also - special shout out to Senan, who noticed I was traveling solo and ensured I was always looked after, keeping me company with great chats at every opportunity. They even let me stay in the overflow car park with my camper for the night, free of charge! This place is pure Irish magic, don’t miss it!
Always so good to go there! The live music is lovely but it is very loud at times, making it difficult to have a conversation.
Genuine irish pub, one of the oldest, with very intriguing déco. Good food (lamb was melting in my mouth), live music 7/7. Book in advance :) Extras: additional parking space on the other side of the street. Coffee bus outside of the main building.
I had the Fox’s Vegetable Stew and it was lovely, full of flavour and really comforting. Our waitress was also very friendly and attentive, which made the experience even nicer. Johnnie Fox’s Pub has a convenient parking lot and plenty of outdoor seating, which is great if the weather’s nice ☀️
Very nice pub with very good food. The atmosphere and decoration really gives the place its charm. The waitress was helpful pointing out the gluten-free dishes and accommodating same.
Fantastic restaurant and bar, live music 7 nights, excellent customer service. It was a Monday night, I ordered a taxi from a very helpful staff member, I waited and waited, the App kept saying a taxi was coming. The bar emptied, the barman checked again, the taxi was now 7 mins away, I waited. A few minutes later, the barman said the taxi had cancelled, (it was now well after 9pm), in the same breadth, sp I'll drop you home. Where do you live? Minutes later, we were travelling towards where I lived, as we came down from Glencullen and came within walking distance of where I lived, the barman let me out. A wonderful evening in Johnnie Fox's and a big shout out to the barman who got me home.
Highlights: - amazing space - very nice and friendly staff - plenty of parking (across the road) - some of the food was good (apple crumble, kids meals) Lowlights: - chowder was extremely disappointing - super thick, it felt like you could taste the flour in it. There is a plenty of much better chowder places in Dublin with a thinner creamier base where you can actually see the pieces of fish through - mussels were served quite called, not warm - one of the guinesses wasn't poured correctly resulting in a thin layer of foam on top - check in experience is terrible and needs to be optimized, everyone is pushing each other in a crowd at the bottlenecked entrance (despite everyone having a reservation) - there was no music between 16:15 and 18:15
Nice pub and restaurant combined with Museum. Great view with good weather. Good selection of food, and option for gluten free dessert - chocolate brownie which suprised me. Service was good. Selection of irish cheeses in dessert section was great, generous portion. Lamb shank cooked perfectly.
Nice place to eat and have fun. Service could be better, we were waiting the show at 7.30 pm but it wasn't permitted because we have already eaten before and all tables were reserved.
I’ve visited several times over the years and it’s always been a great experience. It’s a beautiful pub with a lovely atmosphere, friendly and attentive staff, and consistently delicious food. The only small area for improvement relates to special occasions. When booking online, I was asked if it was a special occasion and noted that it was a birthday, but this wasn’t acknowledged during the visit. When dessert arrived, I asked if they could add a small candle, which they kindly did. In other places, this has been done proactively, and sometimes the dessert has even been offered on the house. It’s only a minor point, but a little extra attention to those details would make an already excellent experience even better
The music and dancing was fun. But this is a tourist trap with some fun! Felt odd being packed in like rats. It was an experience though. Food was ok. Had better authentic experiences in the western small towns.
We came for lunch on Saturday. Since I had been here before, I expected good service and tasty food, but unfortunately, this was not the case. The waitress (tall, short-haired, blonde, Eastern European accent) was very unfriendly, rude, and unprofessional. As soon as we sat down, she immediately asked if we wanted drinks. I asked about non-alcoholic options, and she pointed to two cocktails. I ordered one and asked for a few minutes to decide on food. Later, when I noticed the cocktails actually contained alcohol, I went to cancel the order. She replied: “I didn’t even take your order, you asked for a few more minutes.” Then she added that those cocktails could be made alcohol-free. Her tone was unpleasant throughout, as if she was doing me a favor rather than serving a guest. When the food arrived, I was shocked first by the look of it (photo attached): the potatoes looked like they picked the worst ones available, the pea purée seemed as if it had been standing for three days waiting for me, and the fish—although it looked okay at first—had no salt, no pepper, just absolutely no taste. Despite the charm and authenticity of the place, such poor service and food quality completely ruin the experience. Sadly, I will not be returning.
