Opinions de American Grocery Restaurant - Permanently Closed Greenville
Such a nice place with helpful bartenders and waitstaff! Our table of four shared a few plates, and recommend them all: fried deviled eggs, goat cheese gnudi, a charcuterie board (included a pot of rabbit "confit," woah), the highly addictive sriracha honey chicken skins, crispy brussels sprouts, sweet potato biscuits, seared diver scallops (like butter!), and the ribeye steak. 11/10 would recommend.
Order the chefs special. Let them pic. Enjoy!
Wonderful cocktails and food!
Best restaurant in Grenville SC!!

Amazing experience!!
Best restaurant in town by far. American Grocery is on another level as a dining experience. The owners and staff truly care about the customer, and the atmosphere is welcoming and inviting. My wife and I have dined here for years and it keeps getting better. The creativity of the menu and quality of food/drinks has always surpassed our expectations. Highly recommend!!
I always love to read what people have to say about places, I am surprised about the different opinions, for me this is on of best restaurant in town. 1- Most food is locally sourced/organic: this is important to me, I love good food, I love to know where it comes from. I think that fresh ingredients are key, and AG knows that. 2- Portions are small but satisfying, they have vegan and vegetarian options (which is important to me) and every dish is amazingly simple and beautiful. 3- Their bar is great, many options and a bartender who is creative and willing to play.
I'll be honest: I don't think I've ever ordered food here. However, I can say that I believe they have one of the best cocktail menus in downtown Greenville. After you've been hanging out downtown, drinking piddling craft beers, and you're ready for "a real drink," I recommend American Grocery.
I love this place. I try to go as often as I can. Some of my favorite food here are things I never thought I would like, such as tongue and octopus... But they always pull it off. I have never had a bad experience here. As terrible as it must be for you.... The Sriracha Fried Chicken Skins are absolutely amazing.
AGR is our favorite date night restaurant. I have never had any issue with any food or drink. All the food quality is exceptional, as is the service. Get the beef tongue, even if you're afraid of it. It's the best thing I've ever had!
5 stars! one of our very favorite places in Greenville!!! always fabulous food & great knowledgeable servers. Owners Darlene & Joe hold a special place in our hearts. They are doing exciting food things in the Upstate! a must go to when in Greenville, SC.
I had the fried deviled egg, cornmeal crusted trout with succotash, and red velvet cake. The service was prompt. The food was amazing, and I felt the prices matched the quality. I highly recommend this restaurant.
There is a reason for the reputation. Great food made from uncommon-for-restaurants meats that are expertly prepared. Service is excellent. Great place for a long dinner.
Intimate. Simple Elegance. Amazing food, especially the crispy brussel sprouts and the grilled octopus. Wonderful bar keep, Carson. Will be back.
The service was great. The food was great. It was a wonderful play on traditional southern food. One of my favorites in the area.
Wonderful ambience and inventive, award wining cocktails! Dim lighting, if that's a problem for you, I recommend visiting earlier in the evening/day.
Terrific! Pricey but worth it. Amazing cocktails. Amazing food.
great location, terrific food, , lovely interior, It is expensive but worth it
Excellent food and service, best deviled egg I've ever had!
Good times
We really enjoyed this restaurant. I was still talking about my meal the next day, which is when I know it was worth the money. I don't have much to add to the other reviews than to confirm a couple of general themes. 1) The food was delicious and 2) The general attitude of the service staff was fairly pretentious.
Fabulous food and service! While the architecture is lovely, the decor (specifically the wall art) is unfortunate. The ambiance would be better more focus on the decor.
Such a pleasant experience. The service was superb as well as professional. I was well taken care of and the food was delicious!
Most of my friends love this place but I'm not all that impressed. Noisy place when it's busy.
how can this place get so many 5 star reviews? I wonder if some of them left by the employees or the friends of employees. The food was not bad, but it was not that great either ... when I decide to have a meal at a supposedly upscale restaurant the food has to blow my mind. The food was so so ... and the waitress was somewhat snobbish. I ordered a mix seafood meal I got 2 shrimps 2 muscles a scallop and and 2 tiny pieces of fish - I mean TINY - if the meal would have tasted great I would not have complained this much but the quantity was very little and the flavor was blend ... I can make a better seafood dish at home ...
Had dinner at American Grocery last night. The service put a damper on the whole experience. We felt rushed to order something immediately. The waiter was haughty, and it felt like we were there for him and not the other way around. When we asked about sharing an appetizer we were told we could not as they were all only single person servings, then we were told we had to order the whole meal at the same time. The food was very good, but I believe expensive. If I am going to spend that kind of money, I think there are plenty of places in Greenville with excellent food and service, where I can order what I want at the pace I choose.
Have had a chance to dine at American Grocery twice now, once a year or so back and then again last week. My first time there was fine.... food was good but not great. Basically, I felt that for the amount of money that I spent, there are much better options in downtown Greenville. This last time, I actually had a kind of bad experience. Our waiter wasn't rude per say, but he wasn't friendly at all. I'm all for a waiter that is seen and not heard, I'm there to enjoy a meal with friends, not make friends with my waiter, but this guy just seemed to hate his job. At least smile and pretend to be friendly when you're in the service industry! At the beginning of the meal, we were discussing ordering some pre dinner drinks and appetizers, note that this was restaurant week in Greenville and we knew they were busy with reservations, so we just mentioned that were were going to do this and work our way through dinner and kind of out of habit finished the statement with "if that's okay". His response was, "we have lots of reservations tonight, so you really can't take your time". WHAT?!? Are you kidding me? What kind of response was this? That right there, lost one star from me. The proper response, in my opinion, is "You can take all the time you need to enjoy your dinner. This is restaurant week and we are fully packed with reservations, but I want to make sure you have a wonderful experience". So, we got past that and then one of the bus boys accidentally spilled my wife's drink in her lap. Not a big deal, mistakes happen, and we weren't upset at all. My wife and I both waited tables when we were in college and we completely understand things happen. He rushed back to get some club soda and a napkin. During this time, our waiter looked at our table and made no attempt to approach and apologize or try to help. The person who I believe is the owner/sommelier approached the table and began to take the glass that had been spilled away. She did not really acknowledge what had happened or seem like she was going to make an effort to replace the drink, so I said that I assumed the drink was going to be replaced. I'll be the first to admit that the tone of my voice was probably not the friendliest at this point because I was annoyed with how our waiter had been acting and handling everything up to that point, but her response shocked me. She was rude and condescending in her response to basically tell me that of course they were going to replace it and I was a classless idiot for even being so presumptuous and thinking that they might not. These were not her exact words, but this was definitely her tone and attitude. Truthfully, I got this arrogant attitude from her and the staff the entire evening. Their staff takes on the attitude of the owners and it shows that they think they are better than you and everyone else and that it is a privilege to eat there. I've eaten at some of the most highly ranked and awarded restaurants in NYC, Napa, etc., spent more and less on a dinner, and have never experienced a more arrogant attitude from a set of people who exist because we as customers choose to eat there. So because of the attitude of the owner and staff and the fact that the food was just average for the price, that's why I'm only giving it 2 stars. I'd definitely say to give it a try and hopefully you'll have a better experience than me, but I will not be going back again.
Good was great, service was extremely poor
I have been to this restaurant a couple of times and I had had a great dinner and good service. However, when I came in tonight and to my disappointment the hostess wanted me to seat at a table stuffed in between other people, or join a large party in the corner of a small room, or the bar. I perceived I was not welcomed and either was her way or the hi way. Total inflexibility and lack of courtesy. She did not offer any alternatives. I decided to go to the Pomegranate on Main and Marcella my waitress made my dinner experience great. As far as AG I'd suggest that they hire a professional hostess.
One of the worst service experiences in the past 12 months. Having heard some good comments on this place since moving to Greenville, I was excited to try it out. I have been to and sampled over 25 restaurants in just the past 2 months since moving to Greenville and I was amazingly shocked at how bad the service was here. We sat at the bar (because we did not have a reservation). We sat down and it took over 10 mins for our bartender (Kurt) to even acknowledge us (and there was only 1 other person at the bar). Let me help paint the scene: We arrived at 7:15pm. The place was empty except for 2 tables and one other patron at end of the bar. We had to ask for food menus, drink menus, and his attention. He never greeted us, welcomed us, or as it turns out, spoke to us the entire 90 mins we were there. He never checked in on us, offered us another drink when our glasses where empty for 15 mins, offered us water, or asked how we were doing - once...not even once. We had to stand up and get dressed after asking for our check several times. We ordered a drink each and then when I asked a question "tell me about the fried deviled eggs" his response was, "it's exactly as it reads". I followed it up with, "can you tell me what the reviews are? Do people enjoy them? Do you like them? What do they come with? etc. .etc.." No response. In short, let me say in fairness, that the two items we ordered were above average. The fried deviled eggs were excellent and worth ordering. The grilled shrimp too was great. Unfortunately, we stopped there, as we were so turned off by the service we canceled our dinner order and went to another spot - Soby's...which was both fantastic service and food. I'd suggest if you go, do yourself a favor and try sitting a table and leave quickly at the slightest hint of bad service. The food is very pricey here and if you are willing to pay for pricey food, we should expect excellent - or at least average service. On the bill I left a note expressing my dissatisfaction, my name and phone number should anybody inquire as to why I felt so. If I hear from anyone, I'll reply here with how the conversation and outcome turned out. Good luck.
Bad service trickles down and when it is seemingly led by front of house owner, you should know you're in for a bad experience. Signature drink menu...but unable to make some of them due to lack of ingredients at 6pm. Indifference and lack of knowledge from laughable, pseudo-hipster, lazy server combined with ill-prepared food from kitchen makes this a place to NEVER recommend or return again.
We just left American Grocery and the experience was awful! They had set up a table of 11 in the middle of the restaurant that was so loud I couldn't hear anything said by my husband or the waiter. When after an hour of waiting I asked about our dinner I was told we were after the table of twelve. Not sure why that was an appropriate explanation for the long wait. No offer of at least some bread...guess because we hadn't paid the $4 for it. After an hour and fifteen minutes our entrees were served. I dislike a plate that has everything piled together...it just wasn't "good enough". We've been here 3-4 times and I think we've finally realized the negatives far out weigh the positives...we will never go back and do not recommend it.
