Order and pay first at counter. Find an empty table, get your drink from the back and enjoy. Very busy at lunch, but we didn't have to wait.
Fantastic place. Food is excellent. Busy and kinda hectic but in a fun, ‘oh this is the spot’ kinda way.
The food was amazing. Fried catfish, fried green tomatoes, chicken pot pie, grits, red beans and rice. Service was good and fast. The only downside was the restroom. Clean it up and it would be an all around excellent experience.
The food and service is too notch. Only thing I noticed was bathroom cleanliness and the lack of space while getting to go get drinks... However, the place was busy and for good reason. The food. Oh. My. Goodness. Please pack it and ship to the continental US. I need it when I go back to Missouri.
I had the Sovlaki which was beautifully done. I looked around and many people had the pot pie which looked really good! I was hoping for a little more Greek things like domathes or some Greek desserts but they didn't have them.
Had a wonderful meal here and would highly recommend. The staff were so kind and helpful, talking us through the menu. We ordered lots of different side which were all amazing especially the fried green tomatoes and Mac and cheese. The post roast and fried catfish were delicious. One of the highlights of our trip!
I was skeptical ...It melted away like butter with each & every bite 😂.The food was very good .I ordered the chicken pot pie .Perfect crust ..More veggies would have been good but it was packed with crazy chicken & very seasoned. The Mac n cheese was good & I loved the butter beans ..The cornbread muffins have actual corn baked inside ..I'm a big food critic so if I say it's GOOD trust me it's on point ...I wish I had room for a dessert but instead my greedy self had the fried green tomatoes which were also delicious.crispy edges just how I like it .The staff were very friendly & helpful ...I will definitely be back to try other foods y'all cooking up in that kitchen !! 🎉..Thx for a pleasant ,fulfilling experience!
Flavor: A Service: A Tea: A Solo dining: A I wanted to try it all but went with the Greek meatballs because I thought that was the most unique. They had too much mint for my liking but were still good. The gritcake (which is also super unique) was the star of the show for me. The Mac and cheese was also good. All in all, a phenomenal meat n three that I’d love to visit again.
2024 Update- food still amazing. Been here a few times, thought I already did a review of this place. Nothing really bad to say. Service is quick, food is good, and everything tastes fresh. Couple of things I surprisingly liked: Parmesan Grit Cake. Greek salads are always great and baked greek chicken is good. 8.2 / 10
Johnny’s Restaurant is a fantastic spot for a hearty, Southern-style meal! I had the pot roast, collard greens, and Creole red beans for lunch, and every bite was amazing. The pot roast was tender and full of rich flavor, while the collard greens were perfectly seasoned. The Creole red beans added a nice kick and depth to the meal, balancing everything out wonderfully. The portions were generous, and the food tasted homemade in the best possible way. The friendly service and cozy atmosphere made it an all-around great experience. Highly recommend Johnny’s if you’re looking for comfort food done right.
This was my first time eating here and I chose the lunch time rush. There was only a short line and when I got to the counter the staff were welcoming and took time to answer my questions. I was a little concerned that we would not find a table, but another staff member directed us to a table that had become available. The food was brought out and I instantly knew why this place was so popular. The hamburger steak was cooked just right with the right amount of seasoning smothered with onions and brown gravy. The collard greens were fresh and the fried green tomatoes were crispy. Loved the area surrounding this location and am eager to return again for another visit. I highly recommend this place to everyone.
GO EAT HERE! We were visiting Birmingham and saw that Johnny’s had great ratings, so we checked it out. The line to order was a little long, but even though it was out the door, it moved quickly. Got the meat and three option, which I think was $14.99. Everything was so good!! You get the choice of cornbread or yeast roll—get the roll. Their sweet tea is delicious too. Everything we had was so good. Highly recommend visiting here—just make sure you come hungry!!
Great local comfort food joint with food that lives up to all its many nominations and awards. Was busy on Sunday at noon, but not a long a line and had no trouble finding a table. Staff was friendly and didn't mind answering questions. Ordered meatloaf w/ macaroni, grit cake, & creole red beans; hamburger steak w/ macaroni & sweet potatoes; and the chocolate peanut butter torte. It was all fantastic, with the macaroni, red beans, and torte being particular standouts. Menu does change, especially with what deserts are available, so don't rely too much on the pictures here.
I was hungry as a teenage boy. I ordered the chicken pot pie and my wife ordered the pot roast. I had the spring peas and fried green tomatoes. Everything was wonderful. I'm picky on the fried green tomatoes so I was surprised they were as good as they are. I loved the chicken pot pie was so good I forgot to offer any to my wife. To be fair, she forgot to offer any pot roast. Neither of us was able to finish what we offered. We were passing through and did not have a way to take leftovers. It hurt to leave it there.
They know what's vegetarian and what's vegan. Parmigiana grits was one of the most sumptuous things I had in a long time. Greens, green fried tomatoes, and corn bread were good, but the spinach and chickpeas tasted strange. All my companions tasted them and nobody could figure out why they tasted off putting. I asked and got the answer that the kitchen doesn't share all their secrets. The service was as nice as can be.
Classic comfort foods in a relaxed atmosphere. The menu is simple, order your meats, sides & drinks and the wait staff will bring it out to your table. Self serve beverages are at the back of the dining area & the crowd was a good mixture of business men meeting for lunch & families with kids grabbing a quick bite.
Things were too salty. Hamburger steak with gravy and Mac n cheese in particular. They rang in and delivered something I didn't order. I had a bit of a time getting that fixed. I had sweet potato souffle and it wasn't that sweet, like I'd expected. I put some Splenda in and it was better. Three things that were good were the blackeyed peas (they cook these with bay leaves. I know because I had a whole one in my bowl), peanut/chocolate dessert and the rolls. Nice big, fat rolls, very fluffy and yummy. My husband had the the Greek meatballs. He said they were rather bland. The sauce they served with them helped but they should have been good all by themselves. There is no seat saving. They have a sign up about it. However, I see both sides of the coin. Owners don't want tables filled up by people waiting on parties to meet them. On the diners side, if there's an open table, and you send one person to order, what's the harm? Overall, I'm giving it a three stars due to the seasoning and honestly, portions size. At $16.00 for a meat and three, I felt it somewhat overpriced.
Even if the food wasn’t mediocre, the service ruined the experience. While my fiancé was ordering, I sat down at a table and apparently accidentally sat at the table the owners friends wanted. The owner yelled across the restaurant “ma’am have you ordered?!” In front of everyone and when I said yes and my fiance is ordering right now, he rolled his eyes and walked off. Then even went to my fiance as he checked out to ask if I was with him. Really unnecessary and they’d told me that they were headed to sit there, I would’ve had no problem sitting somewhere else. Kinda ruined the meal to be honestly to be treated so weirdly. Food was fine. Nothing truly special but tasted ok. Other meat and 3s like Irondale cafe are definitely better.**edit to add since Owner feels the need to respond** Apparently do not sit down after ordering until your entire party is beside you so it’s obvious to everyone in the restaurant that you’ve ordered or the owner will yell at you!! (:
