I’ve known this restaurant more than 20 plus years and after so many years we still come back for the delicious food!
Don't search more. This is the place. Food is spectacular - authentic and made with attention to detail. Not your dried out chicken fajita tex mex spot. The handmade tortillas are worth the extra. Portions are equal to the cost. And the service is amazing. Ingrid and Jesus were very attentive with great recommendations. Highly recommend.
El Hidalguense is a vibrant and authentic Mexican restaurant known for its flavorful dishes and traditional specialties. The menu features tacos, enchiladas, barbacoa, and other regional favorites prepared with fresh ingredients. The atmosphere is welcoming and casual, and the staff is friendly and attentive, making it a great spot for family meals, casual dining, or enjoying classic Mexican cuisine in a comfortable setting.
This place hands-down is the most authentic Mexican restaurant in town. The food is delicious and always fresh. Not to mention they had handmade tortillas and all their Fresca are just to die for.. Come, check them out .
Unreasonably delicious. A new favorite. Chorizo tacos and cheese enchilada were great (plus horchata), cannot wait to come back for the lamb. Complete with live mariachi.
This is one of the top ten Best Hispanic under rated restaurants in Houston. Real Authentic price is not crazy expensive and yes it's all hand made you can taste it in every bite. On top of that the dessert tamales phenomenal. So soft yet goey inside with pieces of fruit. The masa was like nothing I've ever had it was an actual dessert. When you order a meal here you get a bowl of Frijoles before your meal. Yesterday two people under 30 bucks left happy and full.
I had such a wonderful experience at this restaurant! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm and inviting. The food was absolutely delicious — full of flavor, fresh, and beautifully presented. A special shoutout to our server, Panchito! He was incredibly friendly, attentive, and made us feel so welcome. He gave great recommendations from the menu and made sure everything was perfect throughout our meal. His positive energy really added to the whole experience. I highly recommend this place if you’re looking for great food, amazing service, and a relaxing vibe. We’ll definitely be coming back — and we’ll be asking for Panchito again!
A no frills establishment with Absolutely the best experience for barbacoa and excellent authentic Mexican food. I dined for lunch on a Saturday and they had a band entertaining the guests with live Mexican music and songs. I thoroughly enjoyed the bacbacoa and the freshly made corn tortillas. I have to say the service I received was exceptional. I was welcomed immediately as I walked in and chose my own table. My server was attentive and checked on me just at the right times.
El Hidalguense is a solid spot if you’re looking for authentic Mexican flavors, especially their Birria, which is absolutely delicious. The seasoning and tenderness of the meat are spot on, making it the highlight of the menu. The karaoke setup adds a fun and lively vibe, but the volume can get a bit overwhelming while you’re eating. It would be great if they could lower it slightly during meals so guests can enjoy their food and still have conversations. The atmosphere could use some upgrades to match the quality of the food. While it’s clean and welcoming, a few modern touches would go a long way in enhancing the dining experience. Also, the restrooms need attention—they could definitely use some improvements to ensure they meet the same standard as the rest of the establishment. Overall, El Hidalguense delivers fantastic food and a fun vibe. With a few tweaks, it could become an even better destination for both locals and visitors.
I saw Chris Shepherd review this restaurant on his new show, Eat Like a Local, and I knew this was the place for me! I grabbed my Mom, and off we went on a late Saturday afternoon. Mom ordered the whole fried fish with a fresh cantaloupe juice. I ordered a michelada, the barbacoa, for 1 with handmade tortillas. Flautas arrived while we enjoyed the live music. Delicious and crispy with the best accompanying chili sauce. Our food arrived promptly, and I have never seen Mom more pleased. Her fish was crispy on the outside but tender and juicy inside. The barbacoa comes with cactus salad, which is delicious. I was able to eat about 4 tacos before giving up, but I will be back because that lamb was everything I dreamed it would be. As we dined, Mom noticed another table enjoying the cabrito. She wanted to order to go. Lol, I suggested we just come back with more family. And we will! See you soon, El Hidalghense!

The lamb barbacoa was good as were the beans and rice.. It came with consomme but it was like a soup with rice & chickpeas. I was dipping the barbacoa in it. Never had a cactus salad before either. Was surprised by that. It was a nice addition
This place is worth it for the prices and lamb barbacoa alone. Parking was tricky even though there is an extra lot across the street. We ordered the grilled chicken, Monterrey, and lamb barbacoa, but with all the side dishes, we definitely had a fiest! All the chicken was very moist and flavorful. The barbacoa was worth the hype! Fell right off the bone and had amazing flavor. The rice and cactus salad were also solid. Live music and karaoke on the weekends!
Really good food and great service. The place is moving to a new location because the current one looked a little outdated but the barbacoa plate was to die for and the portions were Texas size. I do have to make it clear that the place serves lamb and goat. For dessert the rice pudding is a sweet treat you must try.

Visite este lugar y Oh Dios !!! la comida sabe a viejo resagada pedimos tacos de barbacoa !! El servicio pésimo te dejan esperando nooo se porque !!!se van y regresan mucho rato después la actitud …
tacos taste good but didn't add no cilantro/unions. Got 5 tacos for $22 very expensive not worth it.
Well, the service was awful. We sat down to order breakfast and the plate I ordered came with corn tortillas. This restaurant is known for their hand made corn tortillas so I asked if my dish included them. They said that they came with store bought tortillas and it would be an extra $3.99 for the hand made ones. Why not just include these fresh tortillas with each dish and adjust the price accordingly.
