Opinions de Grand Prize Bar Houston
Great vibes here! Friendly and attentive bartenders, variety of beats, cozy patio and chill, fun clientele. Highly recommend you check this place out if you’re looking for a non-stuffy atmosphere and fair priced drinks.
Place was nice, service was good and I loved my gin+grapefruit cocktails.
Always a great place to visit. Bartenders are nice. Lindsey is a doll. Great, delicious, yumm-o food when kitchen is open. Lots of space outside and on both floors.
Great vibe everytime I come here. It had been a while since my last visit (covid and all) and they've really improved the outdoor back patio. I always try and grab the pool table if it's open and the food here is amazing.
In the top 3 on my bar list. The atmosphere was pretty relaxed and the service was great. They played a good variety of music, it was a little loud for me at the bar but thats on me. I really enjoyed the cocktails and variety of seating environments, has a different vibe in each place.
Very cool spot , you can come play pool . They have different food pop ups . You could sit outside, inside on the first floor , up stairs or my favorite part thirty little balcony! Also I love the amount of non alcoholic beers they have
I've been going here to the upstairs bar every Friday for the past 2 months now and I love it. The community is amazing, the music is bumping and Megan is....honestly the best. She always takes care of me. She knows what I want, how to make it (and boy does she make a mean drink), and she's a really good conversationalist. Not to make this whole post about her but she is the reason I made this my regular Friday night spot. 100/10 would recommend.
Thai fried rice and chicken wings from the vendor they had as well as the vegan hot dog beer and shot specials are amazing. Super vibey ..if you like bars but not clubs and lunges but good vibes with people and great drinks consistentbartenders.
Two floors and two patios with different vibes. Great chill place for a drink. Parking can be a little hassle, but not as bad as the rest of Montrose.
It's a cool hidden gem. The jelly shots were so good. I'll have to check out the DJ next time on a Saturday.
Maybe a hipster place but got more of an "all are welcome" vibe than anything else. Impressive beer selection with mostly local options. Cocktails are pricey but done well. Happy hour has several options, all of which are pretty good. Indoor and outdoor space. Across the street from a cute little park. Cool spot. Easy going. Worth stopping by.
Great craft cocktails and prices on all drinks were practical and not outrageous. Joey was very inviting and polite. As a bartender myself I find that extremely important. If your ever in the neighborhood definitely give this place a visit!
A friend of mine put me onto the place. I came here for the first time the other night and loved the atmosphere. I got a "everyone's welcome" kinda vibe from this place. During my 4 hours there, I noticed people from all walks of life coming into this place. Great spot to grab a few drinks with friends, kickback, and do some people watching. This has definitely become my new favorite hangout spot.
Beautiful little bar Good sound system for the small area upstairs and I love the balcony. It can get packed upstairs but it's always a good time. Good drink prices too. Little hard to find parking sometimes but thats a given with the area.
A place to relax on a weekday 😎 after a long day at work. Having an appetizer with friends and going home full of energy after having good conversations makes me recharge batteries and go home ready to start the next day at work. The bar has pool tables and a DJ upstairs to dance to if you wish. Most of the clientele are people in their 20s who attend the second floor area and enjoy music and dancing. I enjoy more the bar and the terrace where professionals like me enjoy appetizers and good conversations while the traffic slows down at rush hour before going home.
Chill, welcoming bar! It's a bit hidden in the neighborhood, but once you find it, you'll definitely have a good time. They have some good happy hour deals and a varying foods option. Street parking is available in the neighborhood, and as always, drink responsibly and don't drive home if you're intoxicated – get a ride home.
I first came here for an event they were hosting about 3 years ago, and I've been back ever since. Their hospitality, ambiance, service, and unique drinks keep me coming back. I love their drink options and their shots too! It's fun and laid back here!
Houston scene bar. Solid staff, great atmosphere. Can get really busy weekend nights. Good crowd hangs there.
Fun cocktail joint near Rice University! I came here with a friend on a Wednesday night for a few drinks. The cocktails are creative, affordable, and delicious! The bar itself is two stories with limited seating on the first floor. There is also some food available to order as well! There is very limited parking nearby so if you drive, expect to walk a ways to the bar.
Always fun, very diverse, badass DJs, and bartenders are always good and friendly! Games and food are fun and delicious!! Parking can get bust and full quick, but the walk across the park to park isn't bad, so the earlier, the better for parking space. Or, just Uber/Lyft or carpool.
The place deserves a 4.7 of 5 and only because it depends on what type of night you're trying to have. Low light and a cool fairly isolated night (not surrounded by a bunch of night life noise outside of the bar) it's a hard 5. Think Lola's depot with more free movement, less hectic, and with food that's usually hitting the right spot after a few. The beer and whiskey selection is mad respectable and the crowd is mixed and makes for great company...but it really depends on what kind of time you're trying to have. Low key? This is the place...overlooking the park and short walk to the museum district and rail. It's a GREAT dive.
This is a great multi-vibe/ experience with the best drink prices I have experienced in montrose. Parking is a bit of a setback because there is not a designated parking lot but that is the only downside to this bar. It has an upstairs, downstairs, and a nicely decorated patio. They serve food, I love their chilli dogs, and it varys by night. The upstairs hosts drag show, edm, and Latin music. Service Industry friendly!!!
Came here with a friend for a nightcap. It's right across the street from Chelsea Apartment Complex in a residential neighborhood. There is only street parking. The place for sure has dive bar vibes. There is a pool table and a jukebox. It has a large bar that you can sit at but not too many tables. I loved all the lights and decorations. A lot of beer on tap and very great craft cocktails. Southside is an AMAZING gin cocktail. Highly recommend to try.
Brilliant place to get a low-key drink with some friends. The pool table is cool and the space is nicely decorated. They have food served until late at night, although its not the best quality.
Great service and chill atmosphere. Large selection of beers and cocktails. The best past of this bar for me is the upstairs terrace: if you smoke you can go upstairs for a cig or just to enjoy some fresh air—if you go after 6pm you can feel a nice breeze.
The bartenders are super friendly. The joint is that perfect balance between dive-y and classy. You could order a Last Word or a Lonestar. Their spirits selection is on point and the patio is clutch. All around great spot. Can't wait to go back.
This place needs to be more diving with lots of dives so that more people can dive into beers and drown their sorrows in the deep diving pool of drinking disper
Date night is great here. You can have a conversation with your significant other while enjoying the ambiance or reflecting over the week. I suggest coming here for date night for sure. 1st floor they have a pool table and booths to sit at. On the 2nd floor they have wall benches to sit and chat for groups. Overall It’s a great bar to come in and grab a few. The cocktails are tasty as well.
What a vibe this place has! Great beer selection and prices are low! Friendly atmosphere for my lgbtq friends. Invited them because I felt it was a very inclusive place when I stopped there by myself for a drink about 2 months ago. I got 2 amazing dark beers for 3 dollars each last night. That is like a needle in a haystack situation to me. The girls loved their cocktails too and we stuck around longer than we had intended and played a round of pool. I feel comfortable at this bar, very homey. I stopped in last time and the taco kitchen was in. Can't remember what I had but it was really dank and fairly priced. They share a kitchen with a few different food truck type folks, so you can get different food on site depending on what day of the week you come in! Music was on point for the vibes with the disco balls and rainforest backdrops. 3 hour free parking on the street the bar is located on! If you live close by this place, consider yourself lucky, you may just have found your home away from home!
Nice rotation of DJs upstairs every weekend, chill back patio, and large selection of beer with fair prices. Plus there are usually vegetarian burger/hot dog options. Always available street parking a block north on Autry St.
Slowly becoming my local despite being a 30 minute walk. Eclectic and you can always find an interesting conversation. Service dog friendly, but a wheelchair would be challenging as steps at the front (unless another entrance).
One of the best spots in town, "dive" energy but outstanding quality, great staff, and a generally good crowd. They host a lot of rad events as well. Food depends on the popup in their kitchen, but the schedule is steady, and overall the options are solid. Umbrella Fellas is there on weekends with burgers/dogs and vegetarian options. The bartenders are truly lovely folks who make excellent drinks, and the originals they craft are delicious. They're also great for recommendations when you're not sure what you're looking for.
Love the vibe. It looks like my bedroom from my teenage years! Lots of colourful lights and a fun chill atmosphere. Also, great people watching. The staff and front doorman have always been very nice as well. Check it out!
This is the first time my husband and I went to this bar. The second we walked I knew that I would come back. The drinks are really good. The cocktails are delicious and the atmosphere is super chill. We didn’t get any food, but the kitchen smelled really good.
Loved it here. My fries were great, and I super appreciate restaurants having an impossible-type burger on the menu. This is a place that reminds me of college & grad school. Dive bar energy. I wish the upstairs had been open—has a tiki vibe. People say the upstairs level is a dance floor…hard for me to imagine because it’s carpet!
Had a blast lastnight. Only issue is trying to get ahold of your establishment to see if I left my card there. How can I contact? I have tried Instagram and any number listed comes up invalid.
We meet here for happy hour occasionally. Their drink prices are moderate, and the atmosphere is friendly and upbeat. The bartenders get busy but do a good job paying attention to their patrons waiting for a drink. The last time I was there, the upstairs was really hot until they turned the air down later in the evening. Not sure if that is normal, but we managed to still hang out up there and avoid a heatstroke.
Drinks are a good price and the bartender was very nice. I forgot her name. The food was great as well and that was a pleasant surprise since I didn't expect much with it being a bar. Kudos to the people cooking the food. Bathrooms were clean as well. I was invited by a good friend and will be back. Oh parking is free
In my opinion this is the best bar in Montrose. It’s a very clearly divey bar but their standards exceed the expectation. Not only do they have a huge selection of spirits and beer to choose from, they also keep a great selection of wine in rotation. Great cocktails, plenty of seating, and their pop-up kitchen always features the best bar food you could ever ask for. I’d also like to give a shout-out to their bartender Miguel who always takes great care of me every time I go! Been going there for many years and I’ll continue to do so for many more years to come :)
Love the rotating kitchen for different options. Cute place they have a patio outside and on the 2nd floor, pool table, photobooth and claw machine! They have different events constantly but overall it's a great bar with friendly staff and good prices. The restroom and parking are the only issue.
I had the draft Pimm's cup which was great. Fun dive bar energy with festive decorations for Christmas. There was a great DJ upstairs and dancing on the Friday that I went.
Exterior is completely unassuming. The inside is vibrant with lights and colors and decorations. The bathrooms feel similar to entering a carnival. Parking is somewhat limited, would suggest being dropped off. Downstairs has a regular bar feel. Upstairs is similar to entering a nightclub and is dazzling. The balcony feels similar to nice garden. There is also a backyard with a holiday aesthetic that sets quite a mood. Drinks are well priced and bar staff is very friendly.
This bar is awesome. I could be nit picky about the parking but I'm choosing not to. The service was great. Lots of different beers to choose from and reasonably priced cocktails. They also have seltzers if that's what you're into. A bit warm inside but they an upstairs area that seemed to be cooler and they also have an outside seating option. Also located on the 2nd floor. Had a great time and will definitely go back.
Very spacious back patio, cocktails and food are great as well.
Really nice place with a lot of food/drink options. The bartenders were all very friendly and enthusiastic with all of the guests, they made us feel welcome and at home I was very impressed! I love the lights in the windows it really complimented the vibe of the bar! I hope to come back for another visit!
Staff is great, drinks are great, vibes are great. Food pop-ups are great. This place rulez 🤘🏽
Great little hole in the wall bar. The inside is bigger than I expected. The bartender was super friendly and the mixed drinks were tasty.
Best neighborhood bar where you can still get a good classic cocktail. Cool crowd, too. There's different food everyday, my favorites are the shawarma fries and the wings. Special shout-outs to Sarah, Mike and Tony
So much fun !!! Went here on a girls night. Music was poppin and the vibe was positive and fun. I will definitely be going back again. This was the last stop of the night so I'd like to go earlier and explore the downstairs area. We came in and went straight upstairs and the party was 100%
Randomly found this bar online. Had good reviews so decided to give it a try. It was a good crowd, not too packed but busier than normal for a Sunday night. I think one of the bartenders' names was Shane, he was awesome. Very nice, laid back vibes. We got a couple different drinks and all were delicious. Definitely coming back!
So glad we found this hole in the wall Style bar! Great atmosphere, friendly staff and very comfortable to just hang out and have drinks and talk, pool table available. Not too crowded, no problem getting a seat at the bar on a Friday night around 9:00. They have hot dogs that you can order at a window. Very inexpensive beers and lots of local beers. All around 110% good time. Highly recommended. Go out of your way to find this one.
Good spot on a Sunday night! The patio was packed but lots of space upstairs. The first floor was busy and had a dj. Bartenders are attentive and they have a lot of variety. I love the decor and murals. There are some areas that are great for photos. The parking isn't great, street parking only in a residential area. There is also a sign in the front reminding people to be mindful of residences.
My favorite bar in Houston. Drinks are great, the vibe is great, and the food vendors they have are great too. Specially the hot dog one. They have an upstairs where you can go if you want to dance as they usually have a live dj spinning up there depending on the night. Downstairs is more your typical bar and in the patio is more lowkey. Definitely a place to spend a good 2-3 hours at.
Yesterday was my first time at this establishment. It had been a long, crazy day to say the least, so my friend and I decided to decompress and get a drink. She recommended the place and I'm so glad she did. The staff are just awesome and friendly and the patio was a perfect spot to sit and hangout at for a couple of hours. They weren't serving food that day, but allowed us to order food to be delivered to the bar. It's a cool little dive bar, where you can go wearing your leggings & tank top and feel right at home. I will definitely be back! *I can't recall the name of this frozen concoction as I rarely drink frozen drinks, but it was so freaking good. Listen to the bartenders when they say something tastes good. They aren't lying!! 😁
If there was a local flavor between Montrose and Museum District it would in fact be Grand Prize. It's a little hipster, a little alternative, a dash of yuppie and the upstairs is all kinds of romantic if you want that loungy deep conversation kind of thing. The patio and balcony stand out specifically because you have that slight feel of being at your friends place chilling on their patio. The upstairs balcony has a great gregarious hang out feel. I wish they used that upstairs bar more of often. Though I'm sure when they do its wall to wall people (which will add to their charm) Beer selection is awesome. Lots of local brews at a reasonable price. Did I mention a photo booth? If not I am now. Throwback to an 80s montage of that quintessential date photo booth moment. TIP : You can park at the Goodyear station next door when it closes! Gimme a high five for helping the parking problem inner loop Houston has!
Good simple bar with no frills. Plenty of beer choices though I think I only saw 3 taps. Everything else is bottles. They've got mixed drinks and wine as well. It's not a very large bar, but it's a good atmosphere. Can be tricky to find parking but you should be catching a ride to the bar anyway. There are some food options here too but I did not try.
Another hipster capital inside the loop. The drinks are fairly priced and the place can be called a dive bar. On a pleasant evening, the upper floor terrace is a great place to escape the noise and sit outside. There's a kitchen inside run independently, and their tacos are OK, nothing exceptional.
Cool, hipster bar. Great place to people watch and socialize with all kinds of people! Their selection of drinks is great! Beer on tap, lot of different liquors and my favorite - they have the pimms cup on tap which I highly recommend. There’s a separate kitchen where you can get cheap and delicious tacos late into the night. There’s a pool table, a couple of old school video games, an outdoor deck upstairs and a small balcony area downstairs as well.
This is an excellent bar and always has a crowd. They have great drink specials and it is a generally big place. However, it is very popular and at peak hours can be difficult to get around. i will come again as soon as possible.
This place is a hidden gem.Even though it's in the tenderloin,it's pretty upscale. It's inside a hotel you can't actually see it from the outside, and I had to ask someone inside the hotel if they knew about Benjamin Cooper. But once you're inside it's pretty awesome. They have a standard menu of cocktails! They also make custom cocktails, just tell the bar tender what flavor profiles you like and they'll make you something, and that something will be awesome!! In summary: Good music.Good ambience .Great drinks!!
Drinks are good, there’s one ping pong game, deer hunting game, a pool table, and photo booth. It’s a more relaxed setting. They have cute decorative lights display. The food is surprisingly good but expensive.
Cool spot in Montrose with fun “hidden” back patio. Drinks were great and the people are lovely. Played darts, had drinks, overall recommend.
Dive bar. Two floors. Nice upstairs patio. Great drag show last time we visited. Drinks are hard. Street parking. Better to ride share.
Very unique spot. Kind of feels like it's falling apart, but a good replacement for the Ginger man since we've lost most of those in town. They host cool events from the area (rice) But the parking is a mess and in a shady area. Definitely divey if that's what you're looking for. Once upon a time they had an amazing hot dog place there, I don't think it's the same as it was, but if I find out, I'll update this cuz this would make this top tier.
Nice dive bar. Three different experiences. Downstairs more like dive bar, 2nd floor a little more casual (but I have not been here past 10, might change), and then a relaxing outdoor patio.
Small place but a lot of personality. Wednesday night they do have a drag show with very talented staff. I wish more people would turn out for the drag show. Very friendly and open minded staff. I have been numerous times and never felt uncomfortable with str8 people.
The bartender was rude. Customer service in general is lacking. Based on other reviews that seems to be par for the course. I did not check reviews prior. Looking for "my bar". I love dive bars. I think I'll keep looking. It's too bad really. The food was good and the kitchen crew is hilarious. Crowd during happy hour was cool. The wassail is very good! The black bean burger is tasty.
Cool ambience & enjoyed chatting w the rest of the guests. Was recommended this place by 2 different locals. The service was super disappointing. Bartender was very awkward & unfriendly. I was service industry for 22 years so I hate to complain but that lady made me feel very uncomfortable sitting at the bar so I left after only 1 drink.
The whole bar has a very bad moldy smell, the service was not the best either
I’ve been to this bar multiple times and used to loveee coming here. In the past the crowd had been a diverse/eclectic crowd that usually goes there. I was there last night and it was VERY apparent the kids with fake IDs had found this bar. There was at least 60 kids in there that looked about 19 years old, and as I was leaving there was a very young kid vomiting on themselves right outside the bar alone. Clearly over served. When I tried to help him get an uber, He in fact had 2 IDs in his wallet. This bar used to be so good but last night I was disappointed In the bar staff for letting that happen
Was here on Saturday (5/17). I saw an old timey footage/movie on their TV with nazi symbol in the background. I'm not sure it was a war movie about defeating Nazi or Nazi propaganda, but it can be easily taken out of context. Just my opinion
Absolutely horrible service. Bartender was ridiculously rude and staged a racially charged argument with another customer(his buddy) because I DID NOT tipped him. First I always tip, I was a bartender in University. Second I did not get the drink I ordered and when I said that’s not what I wanted, he curse me off and walked off. Now why would I tip you when you were rude to me with my order to begin? If you’re black and love a good pint, please DO NOT visit Grand Prize Bar, it’s just not the place to be.
Some nights they will ID a nearly 40 yr old at the door and say you are not allowed in without an ID. Most nights, however, they don't have a door person and the bartenders don't card anyone either, even people who are obviously in their 20s. I won't support a hypocritical business.
First visit and will definitely be the last. Had high hopes for this place because of their 4.5 Stars. (Must be from all of their locals.) Service was rude. Order was completely wrong and had to demand for the manager just to get our money back. Bar drinks are good but, a little on the pricey side. Leave this place to the local favorites that hang there because it's definitely not for travelers passing thru.
So I was there last night Saturday February 18th and witnessed something I thought was so extra, disturbing and disrespectful. Because of it I will never be back. So at closing time there a small group of people that I had came in contact with earlier that night upstairs very friendly happy group they were just trying to get a memorable photo at closing time and they were literally attacked by the busboy and bartender and out of no where started pushing the female and cussing her out and I make sure to tell everyone I come I contact with not to go to that bar!!!!
Absolutely disappointed with how the staff/bartenders handles tabs. The bar handles open tabs by holding onto your card until you’re ready to close. I go up ready to close out my tab and they take a long time stating that their “system was updated”. I didn’t mind but once I asked again about my card, they said they have lost it or may have given it to another patron. I didn’t create a scene or made a big fuss but this is incredibly upsetting. They asked for my info and they were very passive about this whole situation. If this is the model of how you handle open tabs, we should expect to receive our cards without any hiccups. We are giving a lot of trust handing over any type of cards over. I enjoyed this place but after that, I will not be coming back.
Remember back in the day when there was such think as cool kids and loser well that’s the lame vibe I get here the bartenders act like they are too cool for everyone just ride stick up and no customer service literally killed my vibe
If you want to be cursed out by a bartender for asking for a specific tequila 2 seconds after ordering tequila shots feel free to go here, you will love it! Mind you, it wasn’t even busy. Another bartender apologized on his behalf and said he’s like that…so I guess that makes it okay? Lol! Loser vibes, don’t recommend!
Highly disappointed in. The service that was provided 10/11/25. The bartender downstairs (slim guy with glasses and a black cap) was very rude to me and my wife. We tried to politely ask for a recommendation and he was completely disrespectful and raised his voice at my wife. We noticed the bar tender was inebriated and witness him drinking with customers while on the clock. Very unprofessional and insulting. Was not intoxicated myself but the level of rudeness I was receiving and the disrespect towards my wife was not acceptable. I filed a violation through TABC's Alcohol Industry Management System, as well as making a complaint about the service being given and the hostile, disrespectful and unprofessional behavior of the staff.
Unfortunately I was very disappointed because i was so excited to go to this bar. The bartender black hair on Monday night 10/6, informed me that i couldn’t bring a beverage inside which i understood however i was experiencing hypoglycemia and as a diabetic my sugar dipped to 60 and i needed the apple juice box that i had in my hand for an emergency. After i explained that to the bartender he stated that well this time I’ll let it happen but next time that’s not going to be happening no bar is going to allow that. I felt disrespected because I have a health issue that I can’t not bring something to accommodate in case of an emergency. however, I understand that TABC does Not allow certain beverages, but under federal law, anyone who is experiencing a health issue is exempt from TABC if the beverage or food item is non alcoholic and is for a health condition. I usually don’t have complaints about places however I feel that the bartender should have been more accommodating and trained on ADA accommodations. i was so upset i started crying because ive never had a situation like this happen to me in public and being diabetic is already embarrassing enough for me. fyi: i’m TABC certified and servsafe certified. i know my rights as a diabetic and also from a food and beverage standpoint. i was really disappointed.
To whom it may concern, I never really frequent this establishment but when I do I usually have a great time but last night was one of the only exceptions. My partner, friend, and I were having a conversation not even directly in front of a water cooler and the bartender (upstairs, tall in height, Caucasian w/ brown hair with some tattoos) decided to take it upon herself to rudely not once BUT TWICE without a single excuse me. This wouldn’t have been an issue but I noticed through out the night, the same exact bartender would tap patrons who weren’t POC on the shoulder and saying excuse me to them. We were having a conversation but had to deal with YOUR bartenders microagression and I’m truly offended and disappointed by the people that are allowed to work at this establishment. Will not be coming back 0/10. If I could leave -10 stars I truly would.
