Opinions de Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken Houston
So today my daughter and I were out trying to lift each other's spirits. Because today is a hard for us, being the 3 year anniversary of loosing my only son and her brother. We decided to go out an eat something that my son would have indulged in which was burgers but we don't really eat them like he did. We kept moving along in the Heights/Midtown Area looking for something good to munch on and we said Chicken and Waffles. I typed in chicken and Gus World's Famous Fried Chicken popped up. Okay this is the place Well while waiting on a parking spot, we could smell the fried chicken and both of our bellies started growling. We entered and it reminded me of the old time food spots when I was growing up. We got a table, the waitress came over and took our orders. Let's just say, fast food and lunch hour rush have these magicians on overdrive. They were fast. Chicken was piping hot, flavored to the bone, tender and juicy, the Greens and Mac and Cheese was on point and the sweet tea is super sweet and refreshing. My daughter had Tenders, Mac and Cheese and plate full of French Fries and Orange Fanta. The fried pickles were delicious even the toasted slice bread. Now next time I will be trying the potato salad and coles slaw because a lot people had it on their plates. We entered at 1pm and it was packed and jumping. So I imagine the people that was sitting in the restaurant must have been waiting for the doors to open at 11am. They do serve beer and dessert just didn't get a chance to get any because my belly was full. I did have ToGo Box because I couldn't finish it all nor did my daughter. Overall, I have found myself a new chicken place and trust/believe I will be ordering from them to go home with after leaving a hard day at work in the Medical Center. Small place, staff is very friendly and service on point. No special dress requirements needed just a good and hardy appetite. I highly recommend this place, especially if you are tired of the normal Chicken eateries.
Best fried chicken in Houston. Always fresh and juicy. I've been to dozens of spots around town and this is where I always compare back to and crave when I want fried chicken. I substitute fried okra for the beans and will demolish the half chicken. Your only regret is that after eating it you'll be upset there's not one closer to wherever you live.
First time trying Gus's chicken. It was good and flavorful. I definitely recommend and will go back.
Crispy crunchy goodness! The chicken was great with a nice light breading with a little spice. The beans were solid and the greens were very tasty and soft but not mush. I can totally see why it is always so busy. Well worth the visit, but I suggest you get there as close to 11am as possible. The staff was friendly and there was plenty of room in the restaurant to be comfortable. Prices are great but parking can be a bit of a problem since they have a small lot.
Some of the best fried chicken I’ve ever had. Tastes juicy fresh well seasoned and everything you hope to taste when you’re eating fried chicken. Sides are just as good. Service was amazing as well. I recommend to anyone who loves chicken!
We got it togo but spicy yummy finger liking 👍 😋 When they say world famous, building dont look like much but do not be fooled. One 🫦 bite and the seasoning on fries. JUST TRY IT
Finally made it here, and the food was worth the wait. Warm friendly greeting, and was seated immediately. Shey our waitress was super tentative, and pleasant😊. It’s a chicken place which means it’s focus is the FRIED CHICKEN🤤. Which was so crispy and it’s seasoned all the way through. The greens and Mac in cheese, tasted homemade instead of box. What I loved about the placed was, how tentative the entire staff was. They made sure everyone was taking care of. We definitely will be back. Just wish we had one in Baton Rouge!!!
I had tried Gus's when I visited Memphis and liked it a lot then. So, I was excited when I learned about this location in Houston. Got takeout-- fried green tomatoes and 2-piece chicken meal. The food was just as delicious as I had hoped! Service was fast and friendly. Interior is welcoming, with many "conversation piece" style decorations. There is a small parking lot next to the restaurant. I saw people complained about the parking in the reviews, but I got here early and there was space for me, so it worked fine for me. Glad I stopped by!
Wanted some fried chicken and based on reviews iI came to check this place out and am I glad I did! The place has good amount of seating and there was no wait. The menu has few items but they will fill you up. The waitress was very nice and attentive. The food did take a bit to come out but when it did OMG was it worth it!!!! The chicken was extra crispy on the outside and on the inside super juicy, it also has a kick to it, which i LOVE! All of the food was amazing and delicious and I will be back and bringing more people here.
If you’re looking for fried chicken that will make your taste buds dance, Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken is the place to go! From the moment I walked in, I knew I was in for a treat. Dream, our waitress, lived up to her name—she was an absolute dream! Attentive, friendly, and quick with a refill, she made the experience even better. Now, about the food—let me tell you, this fried chicken was no ordinary bird. It was juicy, flavorful, and downright legendary. Each bite was a revelation, with just the right amount of crispiness on the outside and tender, seasoned goodness on the inside. And let’s not forget the jalapeño! Oh, that jalapeño, with its spicy, tangy kick and a little juice that oozed out with each bite—pure magic! Gus’s doesn’t just serve food; they serve happiness on a plate. I’ll be dreaming (pun intended) about this chicken for a long time. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re in the mood for something finger-lickin’ amazing!
Service on point! Food on point! Timing on point! Got 12 piece dark meat chicken with medium Mac and cheese, greens, potato salad and can’t forget the chocolate chess pie! Walked in it was packed (that’s how you know the food hits!) A lady at the front greeted me so quick and placed my ordered in and was very nice (: I wish I caught her name. Although I ordered a lot of food, I honestly didn’t have to wait too long at all for my order. It felt like 10-15 minutes which is def understandable with the amount of food I ordered and when it was done it was handed right to me!! When I got home which I live 30 minutes away the food was still hot and fresh! Not only that but everything was delicious and on point! Shoutout to the waitress and cooks man they did their thing in there! Give it a 20/10 😋
And here is outstanding it reminds me of my mothers, but it actually has some flavor! Very crispy I ordered two dark meat pies they were cooked perfectly. The coleslaw was similar to KFC, but tasted actually more fresh baked beans were regular old baked beans didn’t make my stocks go up and down but I thought they were pretty good Ice tea was outstanding and I read a lot of ice tea so if it’s outstanding, I mean you got to try this place awesome stuff great fried chicken I’m glad I found it so that’s cool. Our servers name was Ray and she was outstanding very kind very helpful refilled my tea without even me asking wonderful service here!
Wow. I rarely give a restaurant a flawless rating, but this is certainly earned. An unassuming exterior leads to an incredible dining experience. On top of the food being incredible the staff are a hallmark of personal and friendly service. The meat is expertly fried and seasoned to ABSOLUTE perfection. The sides are all delicious and worth your attention. My favorites were the fried okra, baked beans and fries. They have some of the best fried green tomatoes I’ve ever had so be sure to order those as a starter. Please take a trip to this gem of a restaurant.
I had a hankering for Fried Chicken and this didn't disappoint. I got (2) 3pc Dark with 4 side items, plus the Chocolate Pie. It was all pretty tasty. The chicken could have been dipped better in the the batter. The Baked Beans and Okra were good, nothing was hot, more warm. The Potato Salad and Cole Slaw was good a well. The service was really good. I'll most likely recommend this place and be back.
Absolutely the BEST Fried Chicken, served with delicious generous sides including collard greens, fried okra, macaroni and cheese, and lots of etc. The fried green tomatoes are crazy good! The atmosphere is very comfortable , well kept and pleasant. Thank you to Sonny and the attentive staff at Gus’s who made our dining experience exceptional! Highly recommended! 😎🙏🏽🦋
The breading has a kick to it. Really enjoyed this place and the inside vibe. The tenders are a little less spicy than the pieces. If you have a no-spice tolerance you’ll feel it. With that said, it’s really good and highly recommend. Not the biggest coleslaw fan and this wasn’t anything special. Next time, going to switch out a couple of the sides and share. The fried green tomatoes were very good. Overall, recommend.
Was very satisfied with taste chicken was juicy and tasty. The service was awesome and very nice young lady. jennifer s. Was not only cute but a wonderful server . Her device was excellent!!!
We have been to Gus’s all over the country and this one did not disappoint! The food was 🔥 as usual and the staff was even more so. I was very impressed with the friendly and attentive staff. All the employees we encountered were super kind and quick to smile and greet us. We had a group of 12 and were made to fell as if we were special guest! The place was well kept and clean as well as the restrooms. Some in our party had never been to a Gus’s Fried Chicken and we were so glad that this was their first experience. The greens and fried okra were my favorite this visit outside the chicken of course but the few that had the Mac and cheese said it was a game changer… hahaha I think that means it was fantastic!! Can’t wait to swing back in on our next trip to Houston! Keep it up guys!! 😁
Our waitress had the best southern hospitality. Let me state that right off! The fried chicken was seasoned to perfection, juicy, and crispy. The fried green tomatoes and Okra were "Slap Yo Mama delicious." The Mac n Cheese off the chain. The greens! Oh, momma! Yes! Pass the greens! No complaints here! A great evening and a great meal. I'm looking forward to visiting again.
Love everything about this place! Parking is tight, but not all the time, and there’s plenty of street parking. They’re originally from Kentucky, where we know they do chicken right. Ask for extra crispy, and definitely go hot if you can handle it. If not, you’ll still love it. Fantastic stuff. Never fails to hit.
We ordered the fried pickle spears and the 1/2 chicken with seasoned fries. We weren’t super hungry but we’re glad we got to sample a little bit of everything! Both the dark and white meat were tender, flavorful, and seasoned with the right amount of heat. The fries weren’t as seasoned as we expected but still hit the spot nonetheless. You pretty much can’t go wrong with fried pickles. All in all, we left super full content. Thanks for a great experience!
Literally best fried chicken I’ve had in while. It tastes like a home cooked meal and felt like a warm hug. My boyfriend and I got the 4 piece tender meal with the red beans and rice and coleslaw. For desert, we tried the sweet potato pie and the chess pie. Both were delicious and tasted homemade. Would definitely recommend and absolutely coming back 👍
Our first visit. The employees were very friendly and all appear to be full of energy! Good vibes! The pictures don't show it, but, the place was full. Nice place with old style ceiling. Well maintained and clean. Good for families. My daughter and wife loved the chicken tenders! They rated 5 out of five! They were large pieces too. We are certainly returning! Thanks!
Great fried chicken packed with a kick. The food is simple yet tasty. Compared to most places the fried chicken breast here is juicier and tender with a slight crunch to the skin. So even picking the white meat, the bites are excellent. If you like collard greens, upgrade one of your sides to it. The collard green is cooked tender with a hint of meaty taste - not greasy. Baked beans are yummy and sweet. Happy eating
Every city in the US needs one of these. The Chicken was the best I've ever had. SOOOO Juicy and bursting with flavor. The Staff were really nice. The Macaroni & Fried Okra where also Awesome.
One of the best fried chickens in the city, plus they have excellent choices for sides such as mac n cheese and fried okra. They just added fried catfish to the menu, so I'll have to try that out next time! Service can be a little slow, but they do get busy, so a little patience goes a long way.. or go during the typical restaurant downtimes.
We’ve been to Gus’s a lot of time. Their food is consistent and it’s a great place for casual eats that hits the spot for 3 generations of our family. They have an awesome 4 piece wing special with 2 sides for about $12. The kids meals are good value too and filling for our growing boys. We like they have a 2 piece drum option for kids. Gus’s chicken has a thin flavorful crispy coating with just a slight kick to it. My husband always gets the fried okra and potato salad. My go to is fried green tomatoes, 3 piece dark meal, and a warm pecan pie with ice cream on the side so it doesn’t become a puddle on the plate. Can’t wait to go back!
Literally no complaints, the food was AMAZING and the service was good! Felt like the south Edit: Let me start off by saying I have a lot of pictures that I took at Gus‘s world famous Fried chicken here and he said Texas however, they are the same image me enjoying three piece, dark with double mac & cheese. My husband usually gets two piece, white with fries and baked beans the fries are usually for my one year-old. When you come in it looks like grandma’s house. I don’t know how to explain it better than that but the ambience is giving home cooked grandma‘s fried chicken. So when it comes to comfort you are comfortable in there they do have beer and champagne and wine I believe and a bar area in which I never sit at or I have never gotten any drinks I usually get them Orange soda so they don’t have that many drink options and I don’t usually drink soda so that’s just something to keep in mind. They do give you a reusable cup which we have about 20. If we’re being honest lol let’s talk about the service the service is really good. Everyone seems very homey and nice and would be willing to tell you anything on the menu and always ask if it was your first time there or not which I really like. When I’m looking to refer a restaurant to someone, I’m looking to say even if I wasn’t there, but they have a great experience and I’m pretty sure they would have a great experience here. Now finally, let’s get into the taste of the chicken, last week I came here two days in a row, because the food was that good, the chicken it has a little kick to it, but the spice is more so flavor instead of heat. I don’t know how to explain that better than that, please keep in mind I love spicy food so there’s that. The chicken is amazing I don’t think I’ve ever had chicken like that in my whole entire life. It is so good. It’s worth the drive even if you don’t live very close to this place. I would definitely get some chicken to go because you’re going to be craving it the next day like I have been.
Great experience at Gus’s Fried Chicken on Washington! It’s the spot if you are craving crispy, flavorful chicken. Love their fried okra too! Our waiter Xavier was awesome: friendly, attentive, and made the visit even better. Highly recommend!
Another great meal at Gus’s! One of my top 4 favorite restaurants in Houston. All the staff are great, but today Sonny waited on me. Great service all around! Food is always great. I have been to 4 different Gus’s locations, and this is by far my favorite. Not only is the service always great here, but the food is always better here as well. If you wonder how much I love Gus’s, count the number of cups in my pictures 🤣🤣🤣 12/12/24 update STILL my favorite fried chicken!!!! Dream took care of me tonight and she was GREAT!!! Very friendly, accurate order, and a great smile while she worked. You know I’ll be back anyway, but she is just another reason to return.
Ran by here during the Houston half marathon and had to stop by afterwards. It wasn’t the necessarily the best fried chicken I’ve ever had, but it was really juicy and flavorful, even the breast. Fried okra was good, greens and beans were good as well. I would come back if I was in the area. Our waitress was very sweet and friendly.
This restaurant has become a standout favorite for me in Houston. The chicken is always perfectly prepared, with the tenders and breast pieces standing out every time. Quality and taste remain consistent on each visit, making it a place I trust for a satisfying meal.
Always an excellent experience at Gus's! If you haven't had the spicy fried chicken at Gus's, you haven't had fried chicken in Houston! Always service with a smile, great prices, and the food is always fresh, never frozen. Our server, Dream, made sure that our drinks were always topped off, and continued to check on us throughout the entire dining experience.
Wanted to find out what the hype was about. Currently waiting for my food. The waiter is very attentive. I had sweet tea and it tastes very fresh. I cant wait to try my food! Ill update for sure. So.. (drum roll) it was sooo good! The pieces are not small the portion are not small either. The chicken is not dry. It's crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The Mac and cheese was cheesy and the potato salad was soo good. Fries were not greasy as a matter of fact nothing was greasy at all. I will definitely be coming back. One suggestion only though I would change the white bread to a roll and it would be perfect 👌 shout out to Raul he was a great waiter!
Best fried chicken I’ve had in forever!!! Waitress’s was very nice an courteous. I had the half chicken. With potato salad an Mac n cheese. Wife had tenders an dbl fries. Plus we tried the fried Okra. Everything was well seasoned and cooked to perfection. Wish I lived around here to come back everyday.
Famous Houston Icon of fried chicken. I had 3 pcs with Mac and Cheese, my wife had 2 pcs with Baked Beans. We both ordered the Coleslaw. Everything on the menu is delicious. Our waitress was playful and friendly. Best Fried Chicken on the planet. (PERIOD) My highest recommendation!!
Great Fried Chicken Stopped by Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken and really enjoyed it. The chicken was crispy, flavorful, and had a nice kick without being too spicy. The sides were solid, and everything came out fresh. Service was friendly and the place had a relaxed vibe. If you’re in the mood for good fried chicken, it’s definitely worth a visit.
A NEW TWIST TO FRIED CHICKEN!!!! FRESH NOT FROZEN CHICKEN COOKED IN (PENUT OIL) That's the secret to a oil free different taste. Thin crust not too spicy but has plenty of flavor. Jolly staff always means good service. Greetings at entry from staff service 5 stars. Didn't even have to ask for more lemon on refills. Food not sitting under a warmer cooked as ordered. Heard of long wait time for food. I got mine in minutes. If speed is more important to you than quality your in the wrong place or call it in. Low prices.
The food here matches the name! If you are looking for fresh food made to order this is your place. Sonny our waiter was super sweet. We flew from Jacksonville. Florida and he literally treated us as family. We tipped more because of his outstanding service. Thank you Sonny!!!!! Do not be afraid to try their catfish. It was next level good. Tastes like they caught it straight from the gulf. 10 out of 10
I stopped in for lunch and ordered a 2 piece plate. The chicken was fried to order and it was cooked perfectly. The chicken was perfectly crispy and moist. Service was great and I look forward to getting chicken again soon and trying more of the menu.
Ordered for a party at new 2100 Memorial Seniors complex. Spicy Valentine's Party. Their spicy chicken tenders are the best. Will definitely order again. WE had the mild spicy, which are truly great for Seniors.
Love the service!! I just wish the chicken was seasoned a little more but I cleaned my plate!! Okra fried just right chicken pieces were big!! Thanks to my server ❤️ she is AMAZING 👍👍👍
I love spicy fried chicken so I decided to go to Gus's. Turns out that it's beyond my expectation. The chicken was perfect, spicy, crunchy on the outside but still juicy inside. I also had the Big Wayne cos Sonny suggested it & it was so good. The place is clean, has really nice atmosphere, the crews are friendly & nice, especially Sonny cos he's really nice, friendly, helpful & took our orders patiently. I'll be back for sure 😊👍💯
Food was incredible per usual! But our server, Dream was wonderful and made it even better. We came in on a really busy Friday night and we were served immediately and with care. The restaurant was completely full and every server was working extremely hard. We will back soon!
I stopped by Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken for lunch on a cold January day, and it hit the spot. The restaurant is small and unpretentious—around 20 tables with a handful of bar seats—but clean and welcoming, including spotless bathrooms. There was a steady stream of takeout orders and about six tables filled when we arrived, giving it a lively but comfortable feel. Our server, Sonny K., was fantastic—quiet, friendly, and genuinely funny, always smiling and attentive without hovering. I ordered the three-piece white meat plate with baked beans, coleslaw, and a side of fries. My wife went with the four-piece chicken wings paired with okra and coleslaw. Every bite was hot, fresh, and full of flavor. They serve beer, but not an overcomplicated selection—32 oz tallboys of Bud, Bud Light, and an old-school malt liquor that feels just as classic as the chicken recipe itself. The portions were generous, and while we thought we might have ordered too much, the food was so good that nothing was left by the time we finished. A nice final touch: Sonny packed us a to-go cup for our beverages, which was much appreciated. They’ve also started serving catfish, which we didn’t try this time—but that just gives us another reason to come back. Great food, fair prices, and excellent service. We’ll definitely be returning.
I love the Mac and cheese here. I ordered 2 thighs, Mac and okra. I wish I ordered double Mac. The chicken has a little bit of a kick to it. It is crispy, flavorful, juicy and fresh. Our server was great. A+ service he was so happy and helpful. Just a breath of fresh air. I need to come back soon.
I absolutely loooooooove this place!! From the food which is amazing to the service. Didn’t know what to expect but was excited surprised. The lady that serviced us was super kind and attentive. The chicken was so freaking good! If you’re not sure if it’s worth it just go! It exceeded my expectations for sure! The vibe was also very nice. Did get packed very quickly and no wonder why either lol I can’t imagine this place ever empty lol fried pickles were even good. If I want chicken I know where I’m going from now on. We didn’t have any trouble with parking. Easy to get in and out. The batter is something made to perfection, that’s all I can say.
Best fried chicken I’ve had — easily beats KFC, Popeyes, or any fast food spot. The chicken’s super juicy and the skin is perfectly crispy and flavorful. Only downside is the wait — on weekends it can take 30 minutes to an hour to get served. If you want faster service, go on a random Wednesday or Thursday; it’s way quicker
One word: DELICIOUS. Some of the best, if not, the best fried chicken I’ve ever had. So crispy, fresh, and juicy. This chicken is what you expect from fast food fried chicken places but usually don’t ever get. The sides are also fantastic. Their menu has great options but they also have a “secret menu” with other items like corn nuggets, chicken sandwiches, etc. Corn nuggets are so good too. Service was also great and quick. Definitely making Gus’s a part of my routine restaurants.
This place never disappoints. Always delicious, always fresh. Just amazing. I’ve been to Atlanta. I’ve been to Austin. I’ve been to several places and I’m just very happy that we have one here in Houston. Elijah was our server today he was on point. Great job !!! Keep up the great work guys. I will always come back and see y’all !!
Finger-lickin’ Friday at Gus’s Famous Chicken – Washington Ave We rolled in on a Friday night and yes, it was a little busy, but the line moved fast almost like the universe knew we needed fried chicken ASAP. And let me tell you… totally worth the wait! The chicken? Crispy perfection. That crunch when you bite in is the kind of soundtrack every foodie dreams of. Even the white meat was juicy and full of flavor (you know it’s serious when even the white meat isn’t dry). Whoever is in charge of seasoning deserves a medal. 🏅 The sides held their own too... baked beans with that smoky-sweet kick, mac & cheese that felt like a warm hug, and potato salad so good it could start family feuds at a cookout. Nothing missed the mark here. We left stuffed, grinning, and already planning our next visit. If you’re on Washington Ave and don’t stop at Gus’s, you’re doing Houston wrong.
I came all the way from Japan to try this place and boy it didn’t disappoint. Service is friendly and quick. The food came out in a few minutes and was affordable, hot, absolutely delicious, and they don’t give you small portions either. The atmosphere felt typically southern and had a nice touch to it. Can only recommend.
Crispy Crunchy Heavenly Deliciousness in your mouth.. This by far is the best chicken I've ever had in my 40+ years of life.. Fried to perfection and juicy with every bite.. Spicy but not overwhelming.. The mac and cheese was so creamy, flavorful and a mouth full of cheesyness.. The baked beans was spicy yet sweet.. The service was very friendly and super fast.. The establishment was very inviting and had plenty of parking.. Dont sleep on Gus's Fried Chicken.. The prices were very decent.. The chicken breast were Giant so be sure you come hungry and ready for this amazing food.. I can't wait to return and they played great music too. Thank you Gus's..
I’ve been a fan of Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken for years, and my recent visit to their location was another home run. I started with their fried pickles, which were crispy, tangy spears coated in a perfect batter, served with creamy ranch that I couldn’t stop dipping. The half bird plate (breast, wing, thigh, and leg) was fried to golden perfection in peanut oil, with that signature crispy, cayenne-kicked skin that’s just spicy enough to tingle without overwhelming. The meat was juicy and tender, falling off the bone. The seasoned fries were a solid side, but the baked beans? So damn good—slightly sweet, savory, and downright addictive. For dessert, I grabbed slices of their homemade pecan pie and pumpkin pie. The pecan was nutty and gooey with a flaky crust, and the pumpkin was rich and perfectly spiced. The staff were friendly, service was quick. Gus’s never disappoints, and I’ll keep coming back for more. Highly recommend!
When you go to Gus’s make sure you ask for DREAM, the waitress! She’s amazing! Our food was hot and came out within 10 minutes of ordering! Dream made sure our drinks were always filled and that we had every condiment possible for our table! The chicken is to live for! It’s perfectly seasoned, and the skin is super crispy! I’m not usually even a skin person but the skin on this fried chicken is too good not to eat! My husband loved the greens as his side and I really enjoyed the fried okra! So, If you’re looking for a casual dining place with delicious friend chicken this is where you need to be!!!

Popeyes KFC Golden Chick Jollibee And other chicken places watch out cause this place, Gus's is coming to take over!!!!! Now this chicken, is finger licking good and beyond....but first of all let me tell you, the service here is amazing. Everyone here is in good spirits they all have great attitudes and they are all very respectful. The reason for the 4 stars is because of their parking but other than that let's talk chicken. The fried chicken is delicious the crust is amazing and the flavor is fire...it's packed with flavor and it has a kick of spiciness to it. The Mac and Cheese is the bomb nice and chessy and creamy. The French fries are also packed with flavor and very good. The chicken wings are very delicious also just like the regular fried chicken. Overall the quality the serving sizes the taste and the service is a homerun. I highly and extremely recommend Gus's Fried Chicken...you won't regret it and I can't wait to go back. Thank you Gus's fried chicken for cooking up the very best fried chicken I have ever ate along with those delicious sides. Thank you for the great 5 star service ever...you have great employees that have such great positive attitudes very respectful and full of joy.
This location was good. I recently ate at the Cali location and they pretty much taste the same. The only difference really is that Houston gives much smaller portions of the sides. I bought a small side of Mac & Cheese to go and I should've looked at it before I left because what they gave me wasn't worth $2.50 + tax and looked like someone ate out of it before giving it to me. SMH Chicken has a great flavor and I would definitely eat here again I would just check my food if I got it to go.
The chicken itself was delicious and the service was excellent, but the sides were only average. I tried a breast, leg, and wing. They were all great but my favorite was the breast, juicy and flavorful. The beans were tasty but tasted very similar to Bush straight out of a can. The fries were well cooked, but had no flavor. The fried okra wasn't warm when it got to the table. The mac and cheese was probably the best of the sides we tried. I'd go back for the fried chicken and mac and cheese but I wouldn't bother with any of those other sides again.
I wasnt impressed. I couldn't understand why it was deemed world famous. Honestly, I want to try it again. I was probably one of if not the last customer of the nite. So it may not have been 100%. And I understand that. So I will give it another try not at closing time and update my review then. But remember this is just 1 fat boy's opinion. You should try it for yourself.
The service is pretty good, the chicken is good, but it was tougher/drier than expected, I would prefer that it was dripping with sauce. The only real issues at this location is the limited parking and the food is a bit slow coming out. That said, I did like it, but there are other places to go to before returning.
This place is amazing. Have had a lot of fried chicken in my days but this place lives up to the hype. Sides were great and would highly recommend the mac and cheese and the potatoes salad. The beans were on point also. Only sad thing was there wasn't any beer but they let us go out and byob. Think they will get beer back soon though.
First time trying it out! Attended on Mother’s Day. Service was super quick.. food came out within 10mins. Chicken was good. An 8pc is about $27, pricey in my opinion. :( Season fries taste similar to Bojangle’s! The Mac n cheese taste better than Popeyes Mac n cheese lol. I definitely wish they had bigger TV’s. It’s the NBA’s playoffs and they have small televisions. :/ Wouldn’t drive out of my way for it, but if in in the area I guess i wouldn’t mind to stop. :)
I’m vegan so I had the vegan option beer and fries my partner select a chariot. She had the chicken and gave her a 4.8 out of five and she doesn’t give five to service us quick prompt and friendly the parking a bit of a challenge but not impossible. It’s Washington Avenue after all Ambience is a diner the fair basically chicken with sides as one would expect the prices are basic two piece dinner and two sides was I believe $18 so basic restaurant prices in Houston
Working downtown, you never really feel like driving anywhere for lunch, but I kept hearing people talk about Gus’s Fried Chicken, so I finally gave in and checked it out. Let me tell you right now—if you’re craving fried chicken that hits the soul, this is the spot. When I walked in, the place was packed. Lunchtime rush, no doubt. I scanned the menu and ordered one of their specials and a two-piece combo with mac & cheese and potato salad. I also grabbed another plate with fried chicken, pork beans, and coleslaw. I even asked—half-jokingly—if I could get a quick video of them plating it up for the ‘Google , but they shut that down real quick. Stern but fair. Now for the chicken… it delivered. Crispy, well-seasoned crust, and the inside was juicy, tender—exactly how fried chicken’s supposed to be. Like it came out of someone’s kitchen who knows what they’re doing. The mac & cheese was the real surprise though. Creamy, cheesy, and straight-up comforting—like something grandma would’ve put on your plate. The potato salad had a little sweetness to it, which I actually liked, and the coleslaw was fresh and well-balanced. The beans were decent—nothing fancy, just solid. Service was on point considering how busy it was. Everyone was hustling, but still friendly and fast. If you’re eating in, just know you’ll probably wait a bit. Same goes for takeout—good fried chicken takes time, and they’re not rushing it. They do have a decent waiting area though, so that helps. Restrooms were clean, just a little tight. Now parking—that’s the tricky part. It’s a tight lot, and if some big trucks are parked crooked, getting out can be a real puzzle. Took me a minute. But overall? Gus’s hit the spot. The kind of fried chicken that satisfies a real craving. I’ll definitely be back—next time I’ll just Uber or go with a friend and take turns circling the block for parking. Deliciously Toxic Foodie
Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken stands out for its commitment to quality and unforgettable flavor! Their chickens are sourced from local farms, so every bite feels fresh and thoughtfully prepared. What really sets Gus’s apart is that each order is fried fresh just for you—ensuring every piece arrives piping hot and perfectly crispy. The crispiness is next-level; it’s a beautiful crunch that locks in juicy goodness. The batter has a lightness reminiscent of Korean fried chicken, with just the right amount of spice to give it a gentle kick without overpowering the natural flavor of the chicken. If you’re searching for fried chicken that combines top-quality ingredients, fresh cooking, and expert technique, Gus’s is a must-visit!
Some seriously tasty fried chicken!! The breast and wing meal was great with seasoned fries and slaw. The chicken tender meal with baked beans and fried okra was good as well. Do NOT underestimate the size of the breast or tenders! Fried Green Tomatoes and fried okra were off the charts. The beans are just ok, as they are the typical baked beans. The fried chicken carries a nice warm bite at the end. The tenders don’t have the same heat tho. All the food was super hot!! Service was a little slow but friendly staff. Will definitely be back for more.
Haven't been to Gus' in over a year and was just having a strong taste for it. Everything was straight my 4-stars might be 5-stars to other, but I just feel like it can always be better. The staff was on point even though I went during that lunch surge, but they still had everything under control. I wont wait a year to come again.
I enjoyed the food here. The chicken was seasoned perfectly and the macaroni and cheese took me by surprise, it was fantastic. I didn’t feel comfortable in the overall atmosphere of the restaurant but My server, I don’t remember his name, was a cutie and he had the most calm peaceful energy.🤌🏼 I can’t wait to go back for the dessert I didn’t get to try. 🍮
The food was good, nothing I’d drive back for though. Everything took an excruciatingly long time to come out. I understand fresh but the kitchen service was sooo slow. The fried green tomatoes were good but they cooked them so long the tomato slice inside was complete mush. The chicken coating is a batter style which kept the chicken sealed in and moist but it was kind of spicy and chewy rather than crunchy and crispy. It was fun to try but I’d just rather Popeyes crispy crust. The sides were all good. The two piece fish plate was embarrassingly small fish pieces, do not recommend. Sweet tea was fresh made and delicious. Chocolate chess pie was good, not too sweet, but very rich, crust was delicious. Prices kind of high for what it is, especially on the tender plate and up-charging for any side other than beans and slaw is kind of ridiculous.

Their chicken is really good, it was tender, juicy and super hot when it came out. I thought the sides were not that great. The potato salad had a funky aftertaste and the fries were not that crisp…
Pretty solid fried chicken. The outside was golden and crispy. Inside was mostly juicy, just a bit dry in parts. The seasoning was mild but nice. fries were hot and fresh. Would definitely return.

Nice atmosphere , good home made style food , my chicken was delicious and the potato’s and Mac and cheese were on point.

This place used to be about getting the best friend chicken but that is not the case anymore. I got a chicken piece with barely anything on the bones. They dont have a seating area if you place the order and then have an eat in. I didnt know that you had to place the order with the server and the server then tried to hustle me out.
The name definitely did not speak for itself. Given the number of friends that speak highly of this place and trying it several years prior with a like for it. I was disappointed to return and it taste like burnt chicken fried in 2 week old cayenne oil. From my most recent experience it's a 1 out of 5. But, because I distinctly remember enjoying it once previously I'll average and give it a 3. However, I can't see myself returning after that horrible taste left in my mouth.
First visit to Gus’s was pretty good. We had two chicken tenders plates, fried okra, and fries. Everything was fresh and hot when served. All their chicken has a cyan pepper sauce applied before cooked. I usually prefer no spice on my chicken but it wasn’t too much. Servings were large. We also had chocolate pie and ice cream for desert. Place was clean and service was very good. No outdoor seating and parking is tight. Our total ticket was about $40. Recommended if you need a fried chicken fix.
Food taste is not the same anymore. The chicken needs ro be fresh at all times and cooked all the the way thoroughly. The potato salad is always nasty. They just need to stop selling it. Potatoes too big and hard and not enough mayo/mustard. Always dry
I drove 60 miles round trip to try this chicken out hoping it was as good as everybody said. I was very disappointed because it was way overcooked and dried out. It looked burnt it was so dark. It's like they never change the oil. Fried green tomatoes coating was too thick. In my opinion, Popeyes and Churches chicken beats this chicken hands down. I really can't see what all the fuss is about. Staff was very friendly and nice.
Started off with the fried pickles and ranch which were fried to perfection and had an excellent dill flavor. Ordered three chicken tenders, beans, and Cole slaw. Chicken was rubbery, hard to eat, and not crisp. Coleslaw and beans were too sweet. The service was quick and efficient. Would go back for the pickles, but elsewhere for the chicken and sides.
We started off with fried pickles, and they were outstanding. I order the three chicken tenders with slaw and beans. The chicken was tender but the fried batter wasn’t crispy. We ordered fries that were kind of soft and soggy. Our waitress was fantastic and the dining room was clean and comfortable. Plenty of parking.
Visited here from dallas…. Looking for some good fried chicken…. Service was good…. Food came out in about 5 mins…. That always worry me when food comes out fast….. this is the initial plate…. We had to send the chicken back it was cold…. The second batch of chicken was freshly fried and larger….. however chicken lacks season…. For me there’s nothing really special about this chicken that warrants $15 for three wings……
The chicken was well-seasoned and quite good. However, the sides were lacking all kinds of season. The potato salad was passable, but the macaroni and cheese was disappointing. It tasted like it had been made from a box. The greens weren’t bad, but the sides could have been improved.

WWE eat at Gus's at least twice a month. This is the first time the chicken had no seasoning. To the point I thought I had COVID. Hopefully whoever seasoned the chicken tonight will do better.
The food is absolutely delicious, but the service was horrible tonight. It took 55 minutes just to place our order and receive our food. We dined in. The restaurant closed at 10 pm, but the front door was deadbolt locked with a key at 9:52pm. THE MAIN EXIT DEADBOLT LOCKED SO IF THERE WAS AN EMERGENCY YOU COULD NOT GET OUT AND THE RESTAURANT WAS FULL OF PEOPLE! Customers were leaving their tables to pay at the register so they could leave. One table received their drinks, and it took so long to get their food that they gave up and paid for the drinks and left...
This place is a straight disaster! Waited 12 minutes for a waitress after being blown off my the floor lead and another waitress! Then waited 27 minutes for our food which was lukewarm! So, what exactly are they famous for again? Because it definitely isn’t for the management or the food! However, I will say our waitress was attentive. Other than that I will have to pass on this place!
Honestly, I wasn’t impressed. If they had stuck to the roots of what the owner posted was his original idea of fried chicken between two slices of bread perhaps I would have rated this restaurant higher. The chicken breading was flavorful but tasted over fried. The dark meat was dry! The okra was dreadful. It was too ripe because with every bite I had to spit out hard okra spines into my napkin. What a disappointment. I will say i did enjoy the fried green tomatoes. The batter was as good and fried well. The restaurant, although clean, was just okay. Nothing to attract my patronage. The only redeeming feature was our waiter. He was friendly and checked on us frequently - kept our glasses filled. With so many options available in Houston, I can’t imagine any reason to return.

Ordered 45 minutes ahead of time, by the time I got there, my order wasn't even placed. Had to wait extra 20 minutes, the cashier was cool tho.
I place my order over the phone. I was informed my order would be ready in 10 minutes. I arrived after 10 minutes. I paid and was told to wait, that it would be out soon. 10 minutes later I hear th…
I used to enjoy this place. Began going for lunch. Showed my husband the place, he liked the chicken a lot and would go often. I do not know what happened but the food quality has gone down and service has gone down. Three time in a row the chicken was literally burnt. So overdone the chicken was hard. We went this week again the chicken was hard, and they added a tip to our to go order we did not authorize. My husband called to complain about the food and they agreed to rectify the matter and make him a new order. He went for them to honor this. He waited a whole hour and the employees were arguing and cussing each other in front of all the patrons. That's not the experience people go there for. And it was their arguing that took the food so long to get done. Very disappointed 😞 will never go back now. After four bad experiences, we are done.
