Opinions de Southern Spice Irving
Overall, Southern Spices is recommended for anyone looking to enjoy genuine South Indian flavors in a cozy and casual setting. Whether you're a fan of vegetarian options or meat-based dishes, the restaurant offers a wide variety of choices that cater to different tastes and dietary preferences. Southern Spices is a popular Indian restaurant that offers a rich and flavorful experience with a focus on authentic South Indian cuisine. Many patrons praise the restaurant for its diverse menu, which includes dishes like dosas, idlis, vadas, and a variety of flavorful curries. The dosas, often described as crispy and perfectly cooked, stand out as a fan favorite.
Absolutely delightful experience at this cozy Indian restaurant! The Chole Bhature is unmatched, and the Vijayawada Chicken Biryani offers a unique twist that sets it apart. Even the Butter Chicken and Dosa are exceptional. Every dish is a joy, with the only downside being the washroom's maintenance. Highly recommend for an unforgettable taste journey!
Update: No complains on their service and food. Loved the malai kofta curry. Flavorful and finger licking good. Decent portion. Highly recommend trying their malai kofta curry either with a garlic naan or rice. Maintaining the consistency. One of the few restaurants in Irving still serving decent meal. I have been visiting southern spice on & off since 2015. I like their thalis which seem like plate meals (a term used in South Indian mess) Good and decent portions. Never had a bad experience here. Price is fairly reasonable. Recently was craving for parota & curry and went to southern spice as no other place was serving parota. Food was tasty and fresh. I definitely recommend trying their thalis.
One of the best place to have morning breakfast. I was little bit disappointed with the sugar syrup given for the uthappam which is like complete water. It should be little thick then the taste would be osm!!!
22-Aug-2025 I visit this place very often. I believe i visited more than 10 times so far. I like their lunch thali’s. It tastes good, why don’t you guys change the curries? Every time i see the same coconut based gravy for chicken, fried fish, fried egg curry. I agree that the price for non veg thali is $9.99, but having same curry everyday feels like cooked once and served many days. ************************* Very pleasant ambience, simple menu. Visited this place with my team for lunch. Below are what we tried. Goat biryani combo Chicken biryani combo Non veg thali Chilli Naan Chettinad pepper chicken fry.
The ambience, WOW. It's first time I visited this restaurant, I became a big fan for the atmosphere around. We ordered one veg thali and one non veg thali. Veg thali turned out to be better than non-veg. I felt the restaurant is a bit pricey for the portions they are serving. Definitely service could have been a lot better than what they offered starting with a smile towards customers atleast.
The lady at the front desk is friendly and was respectful. There no much people inside when we visited. We ordered a non veg thali and two kinds of biryani. They tasted good and the quantity of biryani is satisfying. Only suggestion is to make the thali unlimited at least for few items in it. The quantity seemed bit average but could be bit more. Ambience is cool with few items hanging on the walls which brought nostalgic feeling looking at them. Over all it is a place you can give a try when you are alone or with friends or family.
We visited this small South Indian restaurant recently and found the experience to be fairly average. It’s a self-service setup, so expectations for personalized service should be kept minimal. The place is simple, functional, and suited for a quick bite rather than a leisurely meal. In terms of food, we were slightly disappointed with some of the South Indian items. The medu wada lacked the crispiness and flavor you typically look for, and the dosa felt underwhelming — a bit soggy and bland. We also tried the salted lassi, which was far too thick to be sipped through a straw and didn’t have a balanced flavor. However, not everything missed the mark. Surprisingly, the biryani stood out as the highlight of the meal. It was flavorful, well-cooked, and definitely something we’d consider coming back for. If you're visiting, the biryani might be your safest bet. Overall, this restaurant is okay for a quick and budget-friendly meal, but don’t go in expecting top-tier South Indian cuisine. If you're in a hurry or nearby, it might do the job — but there are better options around for authentic South Indian food lovers.
This was my first order. The restaurant is not so big. My order was veg biryani. I thought veg means they will add paneer, beans & other stuffs but I was wrong they add potato’s, cauliflower and some green peas still it was good taste with some spicy. They make me a little waiting for the food
An average south indian restaurant. The medu wada and dosa were not upto the mark. Salted lassi was poor and so damn thick that it wouldn't come out with a straw. However, the biryani here is good. This is a self service small restaurant so don't expect much service here. Overall an average experience.
We are regular customers of Southern Spice and absolutely love their food. Today (09/30), we went for lunch around 2:15 PM (Monday), and heard about the $3 off on Thalis. We ordered two Veg Thalis and, as always, enjoyed the delicious food. However, I want to highlight two issues for the owners' attention: The curries were served in plastic containers this time, unlike last Saturday when the Veg Thali was served in proper steel bowls. It is neither good nor healthy to serve hot food in plastic containers, and it feels unhygienic. When I requested lids for our leftover food we were initially denied. The front desk person named Jashwanth told, "Owners asked not to give any lids since on Mondays we are giving $3 off on food." He added, "Owners said they might lose money because of providing lids." My point is, this isn’t a buffet where to-go boxes are not provided. These containers already come with lids, and we’re paying for the food you serve. Instead of wasting food by throwing it away, we only asked for lids to take the leftovers. I’m completely against food wastage, and denying lids just doesn’t make sense in this context. This experience has made us reconsider whether we will visit again. I'd really like for the owners to look into these issues and take the necessary action.
The biryani did not meet expectations. It lacked balance in flavor and was excessively spiced, with strong notes of pepper or cloves that overwhelmed the dish. Initially, I thought it might be a matter of personal taste, but others who tried it shared the same opinion. The chicken tikka had good flavor; however, a few pieces were undercooked, which was disappointing. Proper cooking should be ensured before serving. Overall, the meal was unsatisfactory and did not resemble a traditional biryani. Unfortunately, the experience felt like a waste of both money and an evening.
Ordered mini idlis .. they just gave 10-11 ildy for $8 … if they wish to put such price the quality and quality should be matched… but we were served with hard idlis
Ordered multiple items take out order. Biryanis were wrong order, extremely poor quality, and possible stale meat. Host couldn't even communicate in English over the phone to discuss the discrepancy. I am not going to waste time taking pictures even. To management: please shut down the place if you can't manage.
I used to go to this restaurant all the time but I think they changed chefs and do not have Indian chefs cooking anymore. I ordered tandoori chicken, the worst I’ve ever tasted. Poor quality and taste. I had to dump all the chicken at home in trash. Will not ever go back
This is ridiculous. I had ordered south indian fish curry. They just put some fishes in some old gravy tikka sauce kind of dish, smells so weird, so as taste too. Very disappointing. It seems they barely think about customers service on taste. Please don’t go out there.
Absolutely bullshit, we drove all the way from plano but a great disappointment, we waited for 50 minutes precisely just for 2 dishes chole and pav bhaji and even after waiting too long they didn’t bother to bring warm food. The staff not at all responsive at one point they didn’t even came out of the kitchen even after we call them. Absolutely disgusting won’t recommend to anyone only good thing was the ambience. Portion size is also too small.
