Opinions de Chew the Fat Jamaica
I was down at DeKalb Market Hall in Downtown Brooklyn, surrounded by way too many good options. So how do I choose? Simple. Instinct meets “I’m greedy.” That instinct led me straight to Fat Fowl, the home of Chef Shorne Benjamin — yes, that Chef Shorne. The one known for the legendary oxtail grilled cheese, lavender rotisserie chicken, and sides that always understand the assignment. I saw him post his new curry goat pasta, and honestly… my stomach spoke before my brain could. All I heard was, “Just go, Marie.” So I did. The very next day. And let me tell you — instinct did NOT disappoint. That curry goat pasta? 10/10. Rich, tender, perfectly seasoned, and comforting in a way that feels intentional, not heavy. A certified hit. If you try it, I need to know how you feel about it. And don’t leave without grabbing his house sangria — trust me, you’ll be amazed 🍷🔥
I stopped into this restaurant located in the food court! When I arrived I parked on the street nearby. I walked into a mini mall. I walked downstairs and found the restaurant. It was busy! I was greeted and ordered: Chef Shorne Sangria Oxtail Grilled Cheese w/ Sweet Plaintain Oxtail Mac and Cheese Chicken w/ macaroni and cheese, broccoli, sticky black rice, sweet potatoes Branzino w/ sweet potatoes Shrimp Burger Tha food was spot on! My favorite was the Oxtail and Mac! All in all an amazing experience!
I was exploring the area for something healthy and delicious and stumbled upon Fat Fowl. It did not disappoint! Every bite was amazing. As a taller person, I really appreciated that the seating was comfortable enough for me to sit and enjoy my meal in peace. The staff was incredibly helpful, and while they have so many great options that it’s hard to choose, the menu is laid out perfectly to help you decide quickly. If you want a meal that is both healthy and high-quality, I highly recommend this spot. It is SO good!

****A MUST***I dined here on this past Saturday! I live in MD. My daughter lives in the city and heard about it via IG. I told her let's try it! Amazing food! Perfectly seasoned & excellent portion size! She had the chicken sandwich and I had the oxtail grilled cheese!!!! OMG!!!! The warm and friendly customer service; especially on a Saturday>>In Brooklyn>>during lunchtime and & before the blizzard Sunday>>would be an understatement! Continued blessings to you, your family and your staff and business!!
I can describe the food here as Carribean with a modern twist. The lavender infused rotisserie chicken was so delicious and tasty. It was juicy and full of flavor. I had it with the sweet plantains and black rice. They provided a healthy portion of each but I wasn't a big fan of the black rice. If you are expecting traditional Haitian black rice flavor, this is not it. I'm not saying its bad, just not what I expected. I also had the oxtail grilled cheese which was so good. It is definitely a must. The staff were also polite and professional. Overall, this place is a must visit if you haven't already and it will be a regular visit for myself.
Oh. My. God. Fat Fowl was so worth the wait! I’d been wanting to try this spot for so long, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. We had the oxtail grilled cheese, black fried rice, chicken, and mac & cheese — each dish was exceptional in its own way. But the chicken… easily the winner for me. I have no idea how they get it that juicy and flavorful, with perfectly seasoned, crispy skin — it’s unreal! I honestly need the recipe because I don’t know how I’m supposed to live without eating this every day.
I’ll admit, I was nervous about eating here at first because of all the one-star reviews, but my experience was completely different, I had a great time! I think some of those bad reviews must’ve come from off days. When you arrive, you take the escalator down to the basement (food hall). I wandered around a bit before finding The Fat Fowl. After checking out the menu, I went to order, but since there were only three people working, the cashier (who was very kind) let me know they weren’t taking orders for about 15 minutes. I waited about 15 mins the. placed my order, and it was worth it! I got the quarter chicken, mac n’ cheese, black fried rice, string beans, and maple sweet potatoes. My friend ordered plantains, broccoli, mac n’ cheese, and black fried rice and she let me sample her broccoli and plantain. Every single item was unique and packed with flavor. The chicken was juicy and well-seasoned, the mac n’ cheese was creamy, the maple sweet potatoes were sweet and easily my favorite, and the rice had a totally different but delicious flavor profile compared to regular rice. Even the broccoli and plantains were excellent. Overall, the food was absolutely worth the short wait, and I’d give this spot a solid 9.5/10!
I’m crazy about this place. Oxtail Mac and cheese and grilled oxtail sandwich, HEAVEN! The girls so friendly and the chef, omg how he cooks in-front of you I can spend my day just to watch him make the food. Got a sample for black rice and a bowl of toasted coconut corn. Everything is just perfectly cooked and seasoned, See you soon. PS. I have to try everything!
This was my first time in Dekalb Market. I went with a friend and two 11 year olds on a weekday afternoon. The major lunch crowd was just beginning to slow down. So it was busy but not packed. We walked the entire market and decided to commit to Fat Fowl (I mean with a name like that, it has to be good). There were a few people on line (more than the other food stalls) but they moved through the line quickly. The employees cook and prep the food right in front of a glass partition, which also has a bar height seated counter, for you to eat at while watching them prepare the food. The food had such a fresh look. Everything is right behind the glass partition and it all looked amazing! With 4 of us we decided to order a whole chicken (which comes with 3 sides - we ordered Mac & cheese, plantains and waffle fries) and we ordered the oxtail grilled cheese. The total was a little under $100. Once we sat at the counter, and realized we didn’t order any vegetables, we were thinking we should have ordered some because they looked so good. Our food was prepared quickly and we tore into that food! Baaaabbbbbyyyyyy! THIS WAS EVERYTHING! That food did what it came to do! It was perfectly seasoned! Not super salty. I ate the white meat and it was juicy and tender AND….the kids didn’t even ask for BBQ sauce (which they have but is not even needed)! This food was like a warm hug and I enjoyed every minute! We were so caught up in the chicken and sides, we forgot about the oxtail grilled cheese. Yes, I know….how disrespectful! And even though we were full we opened it up, and I swear the sandwich winked at us! That first bite was an explosion of flavors that is indescribable! We still had enough food left over to feed 2 people! It’s 3am and I’m still thinking about this place! I was there on a Thursday and already considering going back on Saturday! Well done Fat Fowl! You have 4 forever fans! Thank you for sharing your love of food with us! Now stop reading this review and go to Fat Fowl or order online, just get this food! Now! You can thank me later!
I've always wanted to try Fat Fowl and finally made that trip. Was it worth it? Yes, indeed! Fat Fowl is conveniently located in Albee Square Mall. The establishment offers rotisserie chicken (white or dark meat) which I ordered the quarter (dark meat) with their BBQ sauce (my choice) and two regular sides (plantain and broccoli with a drizzle of a vingarette) ($20). If you want a choice of premium sides its ($4) extra each. I did get the macaroni and cheese. On to the taste was it good? The quarter dark meat rotisserie chicken was delicious! It was cooked well, not "dry" tender and moist. When paired with the BBQ sauce, it took it to another level. The char and hint of sweetness of the plantain had me on cloud nine. It did not stand a chance. The broccoli was cooked perfectly. It had a firmness that was pleasant and not mushy. Lastly, the macaroni and cheese. Flavorful! It's rich as I only mustered a few bites (saved the rest) but I can appreciate and can tell it was made with love and was beyond ordinary. If you prefer this style of macaroni and cheese, this one is for you. Overall, a great experience. I'll be back to try the oxtail grill cheese next.
I had the pleasure of dining at Fat Fowl restaurant not once, but twice, and I can't express how much I enjoyed my experiences! The first time, I ordered the curry shrimp burger, and to my delight, it was a shrimp patty bursting with flavor. It's easily one of the best burgers I've ever had. On my second visit, I tried their quarter chicken with some sides, and everything was exceptionally tasty. The flavors were definitely up there. The staff were incredibly pleasant and accommodating. I even had the pleasure of meeting the chef, who hails from St. Lucia, my island home. I’ll definitely be back again and I definitely recommend visiting!
The oxtail mac and cheese was super delicious the oxtail had all the right flavors and the Mac and cheese was just as delicious it was creamy and seasoned perfectly the black fried rice was also great it was sweet and spicy. Service was quick and friendly. Definitely going back.
I kept seeing this place on IG so naturally I had to try it. I got the Oxtail Grilled Cheese with Waffle Fries and the Haitian Black Fried Rice. The Grilled Cheese was off the hook, both juicy and tasty, and the waffle fries were cooked to perfection. The Haitian black fried rice was something I’ve never had before, but man was my palate WOW’D, as it was both spicy and filled with the perfect spices. I had to try both of the sauces on the side and wooo was that lavender honey something else. Once I opened it the fragrance that hits your nose is delicious and beautiful and it tastes fantastic as does the tamarind bbq which was also spicy and yummy. 10/10 on the food and the staff was VERY PLEASANT AND INVITING. My biggest issue would be with the pricing as the I placed my order online and the prices differ online than what is posted in the restaurant. For example the fried rice is $14 in store but $16.10 online and the oxtail grilled cheese is $22 on your menu but $26 online??? I understand you must make your money, you have that right as a business, however, patrons shouldn’t be cheated out of their hard earned money. To have differing prices online vs in person at the restaurant shows a lack of integrity, I hope you are able to rectify this issue because other than that everything was awesome.
The food was AMAZING. It was so good I’ve been spending weeks searching for the recipe. It’s delicious. I got the Mac and Cheese and Oxtail grilled cheese, and believe it or not the Mac and Cheese was the star. It was so good I genuinely couldn’t wait. It smelt amazing too. It’s in a food court so it’s kind of busy and nosy, but I wouldn’t blame the restaurant. It was incredibly expensive though. Was it worth it? Yes. It’s about an hour out from my house and I’d say it’s totally worth it. They did take a very long time to get my food though because it was super busy, so make sure to grab a seat and relax. Make sure to eat it hot. It’s still good cold but even better hot.
First and foremost….The Oxtail Grilled Cheese was perfect and the rest of the food was pretty good as well. My only issue is that I drove about a hour and a half for their Oxtail w/ Mac&Cheese special, and was told it was unavailable because of the amount of oxtail needed for an order. Unfortunately I settled for the chicken and wasn’t too pleased with it because it was tough, under seasoned, but it was moist. The worst part is that when we were leaving we spotted someone with an Oxtail w/ Mac & Cheese special. Overall I wish we were told to wait a few minutes to be able to get what we originally wanted or better yet I would rather a warning that the may be running low on oxtails and I would’ve saved some time.
We drove about 2 hours to try this delicious food, and it was worth it! The food court setup was pretty cool, with no wait time. We snagged a seat quickly and ordered the oxtail grilled cheese, which was the highlight of our meal. The generous portion of oxtail was a pleasant surprise, and the sweet flavor was amazing! We also tried the roasted half chicken with black rice and garlic string beans. The chicken was moist, but only the top layer was seasoned. Didn’t taste seasoning all the way through. However, the black rice and green beans were excellent. One of the staff members did a great job explaining the sauces to us. Although one staff member could have been more attentive, the overall experience was great. We even got a doggie bag to go, and we'd definitely come back for more!"
It's located inside of DeKalb market. I wanted to try it because of the reviews. I ordered the quarter chicken with two standard sides. The chicken was OKAY. Not a huge fan of white meat so I asked for dark meat but the dark meat passed for white because it wasn't very juicy. Do I think it's worth the price? Not really because I mean it's just chicken HOWEVER the sides were great and they don't skip on the portions. Do I think everyone should try it? Sure why not. You're not eating there every day. The service was fine. They're busy so that's always a good sign. Def 4/5
I found it to be overwhelmingly expensive for a food court meal. I ordered a half of chicken 2 premium sides and Shandy and it was $42.××. The chicken was flavorful and Green beans and Mac n Cheese were good as well BUT not upcharge worthy.
It was a one and done for me. The chicken sandwich was pretty much a slider. Taste was good but definitely not worth the price. Oxtail grilled cheese was good as well but it taste like beef neck bones with oxtail seasoning. Not sure why they calling ketchup tomato jam but okay. The honey lavender sauce is yummy and unique. I saved it for my tea. The tamarind barbeque sauce taste like regular mesquite barbeque sauce. Overall the flavors are good. Food just a little overpriced.
Finally made it to see what the hype was about. Had the oxtail grilled cheese sandwich and I wasn’t too impressed. Just as many have said before, it lacked the prominent island flavor that we all know and expect in a great oxtail. Still flavorful, but just not what you expect when one mentions oxtail. Some things you just don’t stray too far from or it’s not even worth mentioning the name. The Mac & cheese was good and tasty. Also had the shrimp burger, but the after taste threw me off. Something like crawfish or sea snail lingering taste. Shandy was a plus! Hadn’t had one of those in decades.
I only went here because it had a long queue & I thought the menu looked quite good. The venue opposite was also playing song banging tunes. Sadly, the food wasn’t very good. The chicken tasted like the chicken that they sell cooked in Costco. Mass cooked & minimal, if any, flavour. The mac & cheese was just ok. The broccoli was nice though. The service and staff were busy but still quite friendly. Would I eat here again…No! I can think of better things to do with my money.
Fat Fowl at DeKalb Market Hall was, unfortunately, a thoroughly underwhelming experience, which makes it all the more disappointing given the hype surrounding it. There’s clear potential here, but the execution doesn’t justify the price point. The flavors leaned noticeably sweet, overpowering any depth or balance the dish might have had. For something centered around oxtail (a cut that demands richness and intensity) the result felt muted. Portion size was the biggest misstep. I understand that oxtail is costly and that food prices across the board have risen. But when a premium price is attached, the serving must feel proportionate. This did not. The plate felt sparse, especially within the context of New York dining. Just steps away, Katz’s Delicatessen offers a sandwich nearly double the size at a similar price point, and far more satisfying. That comparison is hard to ignore. Perhaps the chicken or mac and cheese tells a stronger story, and I may return one day to find out. But as it stands, there are better, more compelling options within DeKalb Market Hall.
I ordered with the Rudest Cashier I’ve ever encountered in NYC I could not believe her disgusting attitude! I ordered Chicken with Sweet Plantains and Mac n Cheese to Go. I received Sweet Potatoes instead of Sweet Plantains Yuck!!! The Chicken was RAW in the Middle by the Bone just Undercooked Disgusting! The Mac n Cheese was thick like they added Cornstarch into it Yuckkk!!! The Sweet potatoes were Undercooked also Disgusting!!! The Restaurant has this Nonworking Number listed so I couldn’t call in a Complaint for this Order. This was on 6-7-25 at about 5:30pm. That Cashier was the Absolute Worst Person to Have at the Register taking Orders over the Food being Bad and Undercooked She was the worst part of this entire experience. I will never buy Food from this place again.
