Opinions de Wong's Golden Palace La Mesa
While visiting my son and his wife in San Diego, he took me to Wongs. The food was great, the staff was friendly and accommodating even though we arrived near closing time. Our service was fast, we sat in a little room between the restaurant and bar area that had a koi pond. Would definitely recommend, for budget friendly dining.
We walked in and the place was nearly empty. We were seated immediately. Never one for Chinese food I ordered the double bacon cheese burger, everyone else ordered other items on the menu. As soon as the food arrived I fell in love at first bite, any comments my companions made were muted by the shear awesomeness of the burger that was set before me. Needless to say I began to frequent this restaurant regularly to get my burger fix.
Visited when the kitchen was closed due to a fire, I was told. It was a dive like the others in the area. However, the bartender and the patrons were all friendly and gave us a wealth of knowledge about the bar, restaurant, and other local hotspots--making it an even more attractive place to come have a drink and chill. Pool tables and a quaint little koi pond in designated smoking room. Parking in the front. A place definitely on my dive bar musts list!
HANDS DOWN!! This is the best chinese food on the west coast. (BONUS: It is also the closest we have ever found to the chinese food we grew up eating on Boston's North Shore and in Fall River on the Southernmost Coast of MA.) JUST PICK ANYTHING on the menu. Seriously!! Between the four of us each ordering something new and different and sharing it all with the rest every time we come here? NOT ONE OF US YET hasn't absolutely loved EVERY SINGLE THING we have tried. We're just working our way down thru the menu now -- start to finish!! The staff is completely amazing. We really do adore these ladies. Every time we walk in? They have remembered us!! no matter how long we went between visits!! And don't even get me started on the amaaaaaazing cocktails and the great bands that play over on the bar side of Wong's on the weekends. It's obvious why they've been - and why they will remain - right there in that spot in La Mesa since that summer when we invented the wheel.
My sister and I dined at Wong's Golden Palace on University Ave. near 70th St. in San Diego for the first time. We used a discount coupon for a meal for two. Of the 3 choices, we selected the highest priced premium beef meal. It had fried shrimp, egg rolls, and skewered beef as appetizers. The flavor was fresh and delicious with or w/o the sweet sauce. The main entree was a large portion of cashew chicken with a side of rice. I had fried rice; my sister had white. The relaxing atmosphere and excellent service created a delightful and slower eating adventure. We asked for water, as beverage wasn't included. As in wine tasting, the water cleaned our palates between each new course. There was no dessert, but we each took leftovers home. It was a wonderful meal! We gladly tipped 20%. Parking is limited at the restaurant. Signs directed diners to additional nearby free parking lot. Wong's elaborate lighted facade is easy to see from the street.
I love their food, my fav Singapore Noodles!!!and their never busy..however, the waitresses never look pleased to see you. Been there a handful of times and they don't smile, they don't ask how you are doing, never any friendliness😞 just take order, cook it, serve it, take it away!!!
The music venues there are outstanding between Manzanita blues and Hot shots you can't find a better pair of female vocalist....and with and with Julia pouring the drinks it's guaranteed to be a great night.. Haven't tried it yet but I keep hearing about the steak and eggs for breakfast
I've gone two times and I ordered Wongs Golden specials and I'm in love everything about it being such a family owned spot, (not many customers put I love places like that just authentic) Every plate that I ate made me feel so happy I might not have many teeth but their food makes me happy for the ones I do have! Worth it!! The place is such a vibe of a classic Chinese restaurant even for pictures and amazing food (couldn't take any pictures of the food it was too delicious)
Loved this place. The aunties were delightful and helped us order (even when I pronounced menu items incorrectly, lol). We ordered too much because everything looked so good. The restaurant inside was so fun. My friend and I had a great time catching up here. We want to come back with a big group and order everything on the menu.
Grilled cheese for sensitive stomachs really was comforting on the kids menu and I'm in my early twenties. Cream cheese wonton are always a golden star in my books ... Made fresh and in the house. Quality service with a beautiful ambience. Wongs Golden Palace is a very peaceful and spiritual place. Don't knock it till you try it. They also have a fabulous dive bar next door. If you go through the restaurant entrance to the bar you're practically entering a speakeasy. They have a beautiful Koi pond through the restaurant entrance to get to the cutie dive bar. This establishment is very professional and family friendly/pet friendly. All inclusive friendly. God Bless and thank you for reading my review. I have lots of love for this bar because La Mesa is my home and I love San Diego ever since I popped out of my mum. Born and raised 🙌 THE FOOD HERE IS MADE WITH LOTS OF LOVE. Rest in paradise Elliott
This place is awesome! The food was amazing, hot, and super delicious. I also tried one of the fish bowl drinks and it was just strong enough to pair well with the meal. And the server was a delight, so sweet and attentive. I'll definitely return again!
Stopped by for dinner, didn't look like much, thought it was closed but wow was I surprised, the food is authentic Cantonese fare which was tasty but the best part was the full bar that's attached to the restaurant, it almost looks like a separate place but the bartender was a sweetheart, nice heavy pours, reasonable prices and really great friendly locals, I'm going back for sure!
This place was on my 'To try' places. From pulling up and the look. Once you walk in, the staff extremely courteous, friendly, and very attentive. The inside looks amazing. The Food is also absolutely delicious! Great ambiance, service, and food! Definitely Highly recommend this place!!!
Dive bar #2. I don’t know if I would recommend Wong’s but their Dragon Room is definitely a throwback to when life was cool. Dragon Room is strictly a bar attached to the restaurant. Bartenders were super nice and they have darts, foosball, pool and a live band. I drank beer but I watched them pour drinks and they looked generous. I ordered the pu-pu platter and it was fine, deep fried but fine. #FDE
As usual.... so delicious! Service was a bit off but it was New Year's Eve. If you have never eaten here... DO. You won't regret it.
Exceptional customer service in a unique space that feels unlike any other Chinese restaurant in the area. A must stop if your driving through or live close by.
I Love their sushi. Their salt and pepper chicken wings are to die for, not to mention the mandarin fried rice🤤

Love this place for a great steak on a Sunday morning this is definitely your place!!! Oh and the bloody Mary's are phenomenal as well!!!
So very delicious and great server named May . Place is a whole in the wall but we'd definitely go back. Yummy. Crispy beef and the beef skewer appetizer was the agreed upon favorites
I eat at this restaurant often, they offer both american and chinese cuisine. I love their walnut shrimp with a brown sugar boba on the side. It’s a calm atmosphere and there’s even a bar in the other room for anyone interested.

The food is great- Egg drop soup and cream cheese wontons. However, the server stood there and waited for the receipt to be signed then paused to look at the tip in front of us. Kinda awkward. The attached full bar is convenient too with nice staff.
Never been there for a meal. I heard it's pretty good but I usually stop by on karaoke for a drink sing a song or two. The reason why I go Bartenders or so down to earth and I say 95% of the people I've met are friendly. Get off and get Jack in the Box or some Mexican food @ the corner,if you're not too late. (Check Wong's Restaurant Hrs. go if u can get there in time.)
Heard about this place via Yelp. Had a great lunch there today. The Mongolian Beef was really great. Large portions on the Lunch Menu. Super nice waitress and extremely efficient. Will definitely return.
Ordered the Sweet & Pungent Shrimp it was very good. Also, the Wongs special lo mein. That dish was good, but not the best lo mein I've had. The shrimp and beef in the dish was good, the chicken was dry and the pices are cut to thick

Food was delicious, prices okay. Service below par, older lady was hovering over us the entire time and just would not allow us to enjoy a meal. Not sure if she thought we were going to steal her old worn plates or if we wantes her to feed us, but man she worse than the flies. But the food was good.
We went Tonight (Christmas Eve) we arrived at 5:40pm. We had a reservation at 6pm for 9 people. Great the table was ready. When the rest of the party came. We waited 15 min for someone to come over and take their drink order. There maybe 6 other parties there. Another 20 minutes pass to take our order. 45 minutes we received our food. When asked if the food was coming she said we have a lot of to go orders. Umm we are sitting here arghh. The food came out in shifts. 5 and 10 min intervals. Now the food was good. Service not so much. I guess we head towards Clairmont next time.
Who ever the manager is should be highly ashamed of themselves. This poor older waitress was running the bar, dining room, and phones all by herself. Poor thing was so so beyond her mental means. Anyways, food was good. Seating is small if you have an infant. The windows I smelt cig smoke through from the outside (gross). The prices are alittle steep. They offer quite a bit. I would say staff if friendly but only one person was working. But she was great. No baby changing station. Decent parking.

The food was really good and the staff was nice, but the prices DO NOT match the small portions that they give you. You can find the same kind of food with larger portions for half the price elsewhere. I felt kinda robbed in the end.
The older lady running the place is rude and short. I ordered a shrimp fried rice to go. 17 bucks for a single serving of rice with 5 small shrimp and huge chunks of green onion. This place is impossible to park at, even if you pre-order by phone for a to-go, you're screwed because she won't let you park between the handicap spot for 20 seconds to pay and go (there'salso a cocktail lounge attached, so lot is packed). So, yeah...just overpriced, mid shrimp fried rice.
I really wanted to love this place but it was very mid to say it in the nicest way possible I felt like I was imposing on the workers by asking for the stuff that was advertised in their menu I tried to buy 20 dollar cup u could take home and after being told no multiple times I finally got them to sell me the cup that wasn't even one that was on the list of cup for sale with cocktails any way I would not return it was a one and done for me I hope they get it togather their is a lot of potential but not with out a lot of effort on their part.
I have never written a review in my life, never have I ever came across disgusting vile food but I guess there's a first time for everything. I probably would have never have written this review but being that our waitress was so rude and brought us to go boxes after I complained about noodles being burnt even though our other plates were completely full. We were rushed out and our waitress brought us our bill 10 min into eating our food and then had the audacity to sit there and wait for us to give her the payment. I will never come here again and I hope that they acknowledge this review. #dissapointed
They are a RIP off I use to like going there they have good wonton soup. I never ordered anything besides that then one evening I decided to try the dinner menu so it stated that what I wanted was 19.99 for the dinner. I placed 2 orders so my total was 39.98 plus tax which came to 42.00. Find but when the old lady brung me my order I said I ordered 2 separate orders she said that is how the do put it all together in one I said no then she spoke to the guy he yes that's what we do was supposed to have 2 orders and the food was awful the wonton soup tasted like water.the wings supposed to be lemon and pepper was burnt chow mein was just noodles and dry. There is no stars for this place.
Ordered food from here through Postmates. Got the orange chicken and egg drop soup , which before delivery fees etc. cost me $20. Unfortunately the food wasn't worth anywhere near that amount. The egg drop soup was laughably small, and completely flavorless. It had the same noodles in as a canned chicken noodle soup, and somehow tasted worse. The orange chicken was tough and also sadly flavorless, despite being drenched in a thick black sauce . Won't order from here again .
- Ordered takeout - Staff was rude - Food took way to long to prepare - Left items off our order (ordered fried rice, got white rice instead) - Food tasted horrible I don't understand how this place has such a high rating as there were a number of other people in the restaurant complaining about food, quality of service, etc. while I was waiting. We aren't going back.
Where to even begin, I use to LOVE this place but now it’s over priced and the food is HORRIBLE. Not even 10 minutes after eating a sushi roll I got food poisoning and I just bought not so long ago. The food is extremely overpriced for such horrible quality and taste. The ladies are nice, don’t h wet me wrong it’s the food and the prices. If you’re the boss reading this leave the poor ladies alone and get a better chef and better prices. HORRIBLE!
Horrible prices for horrible food. 17 dollars for shrimp fried rice. They complain if you park there for some reason? Like what? The service is terrible, not one person to communicate with properly. This place used to be it, now its looking like "IT" from Stephen King. A very weird atmosphere, they have some weird spitefulness in the air. Truly a dishonor to chinese food.
I’m rating this one star and would give them zero if I could. My friends and I went out the lunch here around 2pm and we stayed on one check to make it easier for the server . Our total came out to $161 and we even left a 20% tip. Come to find out my friends card that was used had her information stolen from her and they charged another 90$ to her card and then somehow managed to remove another 80$ from an atm. My friends bank alerted it as fraud so when she called them to confirm it was she’s luckily getting her money back . But I just can’t even fathom that a family owned restaurant would do this. I understand they’re incredibly slow for business. But that’s absolutely absurd that they would do this to us.
Why is this place so hit or miss? Was once very good and today was so very terrible. The special fried rice was far from special , very bland! Sweet and sour duck tasteless. Almond chicken chop suey was terrible. Ordered it with fried noodles and got rice. The woman taking the order on the phone didn't know what half of the order was. Never again!!$57 dollars wasted here, don't make the same mistake. Run Forest Run!!
So, ot took an hour and a half to begin to get the food, and no refills of anything in-between. Our waitress forgot some of the drinks ordered. We had to ask at the counter. Food was OK. It all was very bland. Half the food came, then a few more, then at the almost the 1 3/4 hour mark, the last one came. We will not be back.
If I could rate negative stars I would. Customer service was okay but the food was awful- probably the worst restaurant experience I’ve ever had. The food came out and all I could smell was RAW chicken. It ruined my whole appetite. I had the waitress take a whiff of it and she said “oh that’s just the sauce.” Nooooo that is not okay! We couldn’t even eat the food because of how strong the raw smell was. I absolutely regret coming here for dinner and wasting my money.
Restaurant was empty on a Friday night- which should have been the first clue. When we opened our take out pot stickers at home they smelled and tasted bad. We threw out the entire order.
I ordered $60 in take out and received overcooked noodles with sauce on top instead of beef lomein, crunchy rice that tasted very old instead of mandarin fried rice and the kung pao chicken was not made fresh at all. Really disappointing experience.
I ordered takeout on Postmates. The beef in oyster sauce was basically beef in oyster sauce soup. The chow mein proteins were overcooked and there was no flavor. Im going to guess they were cooked separately and added to the dish toward the end which is why no flavor set in. No color to the noodles. The dishes were entirely prepared improperly. I am 40, I have never sent a complaint to a restaurant but these dishes were terrible. Couldn’t even stomach the chow mein. The buffalo wings were decent but not even an option for ranch much less the traditional blue cheese dressing for dipping. What I received does not look like what is being posted by these positive reviewers. Worst Chinese food I’ve ever had. I’m a well traveled certified cook, although I don’t cook for a living anymore, and have been in restaurants for much of my young life. It’s better to have 5 things on a menu you do really well than a huge menu where you cut corners and utilize a large amount of pre-prepared ingredients that aren’t allowed to fully cook as intended to create a cohesive single dish. Minimize the menu and retrain on popular dishes. I’m not sure why the reviews are so mixed but it seems they’re really weak on their takeout. It also seems they have been open a long time and maybe inflating food prices are making it hard with such a large menu but I can’t believe people that care about keeping their business at all would let such poorly prepared food leave the store. It’s astounding they’re still in business. Or maybe just have one good cook and I got the bad one? I dunno. The photo is the “chow mein with soft noodles” that I couldn’t eat. I thought of trying to repurpose the ingredients and make it taste better but the smell when I opened it today (ordered last night) was less than appetite inducing and I will be trashing it. Go ahead and google “chow mein with soft noodles” and let me know if you would consider what I received as the same dish.
"I was really disappointed with my meal here. The food was cold, stale, and lacked any fresh flavors. The fried items were greasy and soggy, while the rice tasted like it had been sitting out for hours. For the price, I expected much better quality. I hope the owner takes action to improve, so others don’t waste their money like I did.

Service was good. Place looks nice and clean. Food looked good but tasted bad. Orange Chicken and Spare Ribs didn't taste fresh. Had a bad taste. Only thing yummy and fresh were the Cheese Wontons. I regret going there. Too expensive for that quality of food.
