I and my girlfriend came to Plaquemine lock on Valentine’s Day and the food was delicious! Our favourite dish was the jambalaya. Our waiter, Mano, was so attentive and kind. This place has amazing service, food and live music!
Maya and Tom were amazing! They squeezed us in last minute for my mums birthday and all the food was incredible! Every dish was 10/10, drinks were amazing too. Definitely one of my favourite places!
Beautiful, unique looking pub with happy hour from 4pm to 6pm on weekdays. £5 pints and selected cocktails including their brilliant blood mary. I had the fried green tomatoes to start, included on the plate were fried green okra which was a nice surprise, and the Jambalaya for mains, a colourful quasi paella, wonderful.
We came here tonight to celebrate my birthday and I'm so glad we did. The owner was welcoming and really nice to talk to. The food was flavorful and definitely the best fried chicken I've ever had in a restaurant. My husband had the gumbo and it was obvious that someone took their time making the roux. We also had the hot grilled platter with 3 kinds of oyster preparations and some fried shrimp. The chili oyster was our favorite and the shrimp are just as tasty as the fried chicken but we missed having some cocktail sauce for dipping. The hurricanes were a perfect match to the food and strong which I liked. We will be back on a weekend to listen to the band and try some more drinks.
Sometimes you have to travel a distance for something special. The restaurant in London is the best for its southern food dishes. Jambalaya was perfect & gumbo which is a favorite. Relaxed atmosphere and great service. Nearest tube Angel 7 mins walk. Highly recommend. Rebecca
I am not familiar with Louisiana cuisine and thought the flavours were unexpected and unlike what I’ve tried elsewhere. The seafood soup was enjoyable and I would like to know the spices used. There’s also a thickness and viscosity to the soup, was it the okra? I had not associated okra with food from the States, and devoured the side of deep fried okra and green tomatoes. The shrimp boil was good too and I would recommend the boil be shared. I think it would be a bit much for a single person and the flavour of the whole dish is monotonous - I would want to taste different flavours. Overall very happy with the meal.
Beautiful pub, serving Cajun & Creole food. There was a live pianist when we visited. Often a pub that has a serious food focus can loose it's good pub atmosphere but that's not the case here. Excellent balance. Very friendly and helpful staff. The cajun fries were brilliantly spicy. Loved the corn bread. The black chicken po'boy didn't stand out for me personally, but great to try. Good beers on tap. Easy to spend all day here. Top stuff.
We were sold on the seafood happy hour - joined on a Saturday morning, delicious oysters! Found olace without a reservation outside, but the place was getting full quickly. Good selection of drinks, but on full prices, anyway it’s worth it - 1 pound 🦪and 🍤 sold by platters of 6, quite a good deal! Nice atmosphere overall, we got a free piano jazz show as well, not sure if that’s common.
I'd been meaning to visit the place for quite a while and wasn't disappointed. A good range of food and drinks and even better if you catch it on a happy hour! Looking forward to my next visit already.
I had a lovely birthday meal here. The service was wonderful from the moment we entered the restaurant, everyone was so warm and welcoming. We were here during happy hour and the free cornbread was delicious and a really lovely touch. We ordered the chicken po boy which was just okay, if a little dry. But the shrimp was so sweet and fresh, I'd go back and order 12 of those, the fries hot and tasty as were the fried green tomatoes. But the standout for us was definitely the bacon beignets, we would come back just for a plate of those. And also we'd go back for the incredible cocktails. The gumbo wasn't to my personal taste, which was fine but the only slight disappointment was the rice in gumbo was undercooked and slightly hard and chalky in the middle. We did arrive quite early on and during happy hour most other customers seemed to be ordering oysters and happy hour specialities, so I wonder if this is why. Despite this, everything else was so wonderful Plaquemine Lock that it still gets 5 stars from us, they even gave us free little mint julep bourbon shots at the end of the meal that were fantastic, and we can't wait to come back and try other dishes on the menu.
We went for the happy hour, we had oysters, shrimp, fries and bacon donut sandwich. Everything was absolutely delicious. Also I had the blackened chicken sandwich which I loved. The service was excellent we were looked after and the staff were friendly helpful and attentive. They also have a little outside dining area. Can't wait to go back
went for the happy hour! the food was amazing (especially loved the cornbread... wow), seafood was fresh, service was warm and friendly and overall had a great time. my only wish is that i could have had more food!!
Absolute jewel of a pub. Buzzy atmosphere and the food was scrumptious. I had a mix of oysters, prawns, corn bread, cajun fries and to finish pecan pie with cream. Fabulous service and Istvan the GM made me feel very welcome with his BIG smile. I will be back!
Easily my favourite meal of the year. The food was incredible, the corn bread and gumbo were extraordinary. I could barely hear my partner over the loud and amazing band performing on Halloween! Will visit again!
Came for the happy hour, stayed for the sensational vibes. Absolutely blown away by your staff’s performance. Everything was wonderful. Dog treats and a bowl of water were immediately handed to me as I came in with my dog - very thankful for that. And the food and service was impeccable. Thank you for a cracking evening!
Lovely place with good music. The staff was friendly, food was very good, I particularly loved the fried green tomatoes. Crawfish boil was also superb, the cajun fries a bit too basic. Very interesting part was the dessert - bourbon pecan pie. The taste of bourbon was very strong, but in combination with the pecans and ice cream it worked really well.
Absolutely incredible! The best seafood I’ve ever had, fresh, juicy, and full of flavor. If you love crawfish, this place is a must-try! 🦞🔥
We came to happy hour- the prawns are massive and delicious, great oysters and incredible value for money. Cocktails are lovely and great price too! We were served by Mano and Luke who were very friendly, helpful and we all had a fab evening
Love this place. Great vibe with live music, lovely service, and delicious food in fair portions. Amazing value for the price!
All i can say this place is the highlight of my day. Have been many places to dine or drink but this place has something which other places are missing and its live music. Just pop in for a drink and they didn’t disappoint their customers. Great service. Very attentive and good staff. Good beer choice but the food smell people enjoying was so delicious. Surely coming back for taste their food. Btw keep that atmosphere alive, i’ll be back soon. Better to book a table before visiting as they were nearly house packed when i was there.
As a Cajun visiting London I knew I had to stop by for a bowl of gumbo! It was very good! In Louisiana we usually do not have chicken, sausage, shrimp and okra in one gumbo, but they make it work! T’as faim? This is the place for a taste of home!
So my partner and I enjoyed the infamous Happy Hour. And who can complain about drinking £5 pints in Islington? Not me. Food was generally excellent as you would expect. One caveat, whilst it is churlish to complain about £1 oysters, they were not exactly the greatest ever - though they were well shucked and enjoyable enough; manage your expectations is all I am saying. The shrimp are in some ways the better option - some of the freshest I have ever enjoyed. Beignets and cornbread were excellent too. Service is nice - they do attempt a double-tip via the card terminal which is a bit naughty though they are all very nice so I can forgive it. I would definitely suggest booking a table. It is technically viable to order food without a table I think though probably not advisable if you want to eat seafood. I would definitely go back.
the best food i’ve ever had!!! the portion sizes were incredible and so was the food :). we ordered a few sides, two mains and three desserts and everything blew our minds!! also for how much we ordered it wasn’t too expensive either :) also the nicest staff ever, very happy to speak about the food and recommend items off the menu! also clearly very passionate about the amazing cuisine served!! thank you so much and will definitely be returning as often as I can!!
Lovely place! The atmosphere was amazing! The service was absolutely great and the food was incredible! We enjoyed a secluded table with a view of the jazz band and great decoration around us. I would recommend booking before going especially on weekends. We loved the chilled shrimp and the chicken pineapple! The margarita was absolutely delicious!
Really lovely Regent canal side pub with a Louisiana vibe situated near Angel Station. The live music was really good and the food was fantastic. The beer selection was surprisingly good with a good amount of craft beer options to try. I’ll be back for sure. Only thing to be aware of is the outside drinking license ends at 08:30PM so try get an inside table if you intend to be there around then.
Probably the best roast chicken I’ve had at the New Orleans cajun inspired Sunday roast @plaqueminelock in #islington I rarely order chicken for a roast (too many dry tasteless experiences) but they had me at dirty rice stuffing! And boy was it the right choice… everything on the plate was delicious and seasoned well. The veggies were a highlight and the dripping roasties crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. The roast chicken was super juicy and that rice was 🤜🏼🤛🏼🤯 All the other bites and service were fab (also dog friendly). Grilled chilli oysters and bacon beignet had us ooh-ing 🤤 (and thanks for finding us a portion of crackling 🙏🏼)
We booked a table for the happy hour deal today, £1 oyster is irresistible! Tho the place is so busy esp on a Friday evening, the team there still provided excellent service and we had a great evening, thank you!
Incredible food, ambience and music would highly recommend! They have live music from 8-10pm on Monday to Saturdays which really lifted the mood. We got the cornbread, seafood boil, shrimp sandwich, pecan pie and beignet’s. The food was all incredible with good portions except for the pecan pie. I would definitely recommend booking in advance to ensure you get a seat!
Came by to try their happy hour and really enjoyed it! Oysters are no match for those back home in Aus but still great for £1. Quite liked the prawns too. The place is also a great vibe by the canals on a nice spring/summer’s evening. The only complaint is service was extremely slow. We arrived around 5:15pm and spent 30-40mins in line waiting to get served, which is a significant amount of time especially given the happy hour itself doesn’t go for very long. I would definitely come back but I’d arrive closer to 5pm so that I don’t wait as long to get served. I would also come back to try the actual menu.
Came here for their happy hour oysters and shrimps! Everything was great! The shrimps are good but oysters are okayish. I had better oysters elsewhere. Would come again to try other stuff!
Fantastic food. The gumbo was so flavourful, and the cornbread was soooo nice and fluffy. We also had strawberry pie for desert and it was delicious and fresh strawberries. The staff are outstanding. I will be back for the jazz, its a 5/5 from me.
Small but flavoursome portions. The gumbo packs a serious punch. The grits are outrageous, and sides are reasonable , while mains are on the pricier side. Really good array of drinks options too (it is a pub) and live music in the evening. Can't think of anywhere else in London doing as good Cajun food. Really enjoyed it. Get the Jambalaya for sure!
Nice Gaston pub specialising in Creole cuisine with live jazz music most of the days. We had a gumbo and a jambalaya for mains. Shrimp n grits and white gazpacho for starters. Strawberry pie for dessert. They were all good portions and tasty! They offered as corn bread for free! Big wine list with wines from US, a bit pricey. Will return for the food, the music and try blood Mary!
The only credible place we've found in London for Cajun food and atmosphere. The chef clearly knows what they're doing, and the dishes are unapologetically classic. Jazz nights are very pleasant too, and we appreciate the dog friendliness! The hurricane cocktails are a must try.
🚇Angel 🍺 £6.40 Estrella Galicia ❤️ A taste of the Deep South in N1. The Plaquemine Lock is located on a leafy street set on the Regents Canal in Angel. The nearest Tube is Angel which is a pleasant five minute stroll. Formally the Prince of Wales, the pub was originally built in 1851 and rebuilt in the 1930s. After closing in 2014, the pub reopened in 2017 as The Plaquemine Lock. The name refers to a lock in Plaquemine, a small town in Louisiana USA. This is a cosy one bar pub that has a welcoming local feel. The walls are painted a vibrant yellow and are overlaid by murals of life on the bayou, plantation houses and river boats. The seating is a mix of banquettes, traditional chairs around café style tables and comfy leather topped stools. There are some original features from the 1930’s , the tiled fireplace in the snug, the servery and the wall panelling. The beer selection was excellent and included two cask ales. There are beers available from London breweries like @hammertonbrew and @fourpure plus continental options too. I had a pint of Estrella Galicia, my pint was superb, price point was just above average. The food is New Orleans influenced Cajun and Creole cuisine. Dishes include Jambalaya, hearty filled Po’boys plus Oysters and seafood. If you visit on a Sunday, traditional Roasts take centre stage. We arrived around 1pm on a warm Saturday lunchtime back in August. The atmosphere was very convivial and upbeat with a dozen or so punters in attendance. There was a chap tinkling the ivories which made for a pleasant stay. We got chatting to the super friendly American owners who were telling us all about the pub’s name and their links to Louisiana, they also let is sample their amazing Bloody Mary. If you love your Jazz and Blues, the pub host live music six days a week. The @plaqueminelock is a unique and very colourful pub that we immediately felt at home in. Even though the food may get all the headlines, this is a great place to have a beer. The welcome and hospitality was outstanding, we instantly felt like locals. I will definitely revisit to try the Po’boys. ℹ️ Info correct on visiting 19.08.23
came in last night and had a great time with my partner, tried gumbo for the first time and god it was good, my server was excellent, didn’t catch her name but brown hair. didn’t even realise they did live music here! was great
As with many others, we came here for happy hour in which the offer is too good to miss, but what a special little place right by the canal. Service was fantastic - both Jerry and Elijah were wonderful, and looked after us well during our visit. Delightful fresh seafood in a relaxed atmosphere with attentive staff. No one can argue with £5 margaritas. Great food, great service, looking forward to stopping by on a weekend when they have live music. Thanks for having us!
I've had Cajun/Creole food a number of times over the years in America and thought this was the best I've had. The collard greens were phenomenal, it was just right, can't recommend it enough. The gumbo and the cajun spiced fries were also very good. I was there for brunch and someone was performing on the piano and that was very enjoyable. Good service and reasonable prices.
Plaquemine Lock 23/10/25 Pub with Creole and Cajun (New Orleans inspired) food and drinks. Located in Angel, was on Michelin Guide (few years ago). The best seafood happy hour, £5 bloody Mary, £1 per oyster or shrimp. Food 8/10 Service 9/10 Atmosphere 9/10 Value 10/10 We ordered 12 oysters, 6 shrimp, and 2 bloody Mary's, after service came to about £30. As a treat this is awesome. I enjoy spicy food and getting both Tabasco types was good fun and we made our drinks super hot. The oysters were on the smaller side, but sweet and morish. The shrimp were impressive and juicy. Next time we will make sure to try the other dishes in happy hour including the Bacon Bignet and cornbread and sticking around for a couple pints.
It was my husband’s birthday and we had a great time. We were there for happy hour and the oysters, shrimp and cornbread were delicious. We kept ordering more. Also very good margaritas and Bloody Marys. We will be back! Thank you for an amazing experience
Went for the Happy Hour and had a lovely time munching on some oysters and shrimp for a pound each. Cannot complain with the quality of the seafood but definitely preferred the shrimp. The cornbread was a tasty side to snack on whilst waiting for the seafood. Bloody Mary’s went down a treat paired very well with the shrimp. Happy Hour can be quite chaotic and our server was attentive and ensured we didn’t run low on drink and checked incase we wanted extra food. Highly recommend if you want to feast on some seafood over drinks as an early dinner/pre-dinner.
Humble little pub, located just a stones throw from Angel underground station. Facing the canal is has great 'locals' vibe to it. We chose this spot for it's creole inspired food. Never expected there to be live music also, which really added to the atmosphere, beer selection wasn't the greatest but they had Estrella Galicia so my buds were satisfied. For my lunch I ordered the Gumbo with cornbread, amazing! Very good gumbo, but they went very easy on the spice (I prefer a lot LOT more heat) because of that I gave the gumbo a 4 out of 5, would've been better with more spice, but I do also understand not everyone like me can handle it. I also had fried okra with some cajun sauce which I highly recommend, was banging. My friend had chicken and pancakes with syrup, had a bite tasted great, but my choice in the gumbo was a solid one. Overall, if you're looking for some good grub and are lost for choices around Angel, hit up Plaquemine Lock, you won't be disappointed. Peace ✌️
Nice pub for a drink and listen to some piano played by various random performers. Good variety of beers and the food all looks good. Plenty of good menu options. Nice outdoor seating area to get some sunshine too.
I saw the happy hour in this place and decided to try it, the food was good especially the value of the oysters and shrimps, there was someone playing the piano after our lunch which my wife loved. The gentleman (Mano) looking after the customers was nothing short of amazing, keeping everything in check.
Saturday lunch here! We came at 12.30 and then realised that happy hour was from 11-12! We had a variety of starters - cornbread, fried tomatoes and collard greens. Followed by po boy peacemaker sandwich, prawn and crayfish boil, gumbo and southern fried chicken. The dishes were all pretty good but unfortunately we just found them quite salty! Favourite dish for us? Fried tomatoes and the po boy probably! Service was ok - our waitress was excellent but the food took over c.40 minutes before we had our first dish. Atmosphere was ok and they did have live music which was a guy playing the piano. He was good but it was quite loud for a place so small and we struggled to have a conversation which was a shame. Overall, not sure it's my favourite cuisine but it's certainly good to try and another thing checked off ✅
I liked that I tried new and interesting foods I've never tried before, which made this experience memorable. However, it was very pricey for the small portions you got, and some dishes were average, but some were amazing, so my review is quite mixed. My favourite was the bacon beignet; the star of the show. I could have eaten 10 of those! My second favourite was the oysters, which were fresh and enjoyable. Then, after that, everything else was nice but not mind-blowing. The pork scratching with the mustard sauce had strong flavours, though the pork was hard to chew it times. The fried green tomatoes were delicious and juicy. But the chicken wings were tasteless, unfortunately. The shrimp was good. The drinks were fabulous. Our waitress was a very attentive American lady. She did seem a little flustered at times, but she made sure we were fine. But overall, it was expensive and the food wasn't mind-blowing.
Came for the food hoping to have a good Cajun experience. Sadly disappointing. The good things— atmosphere is great, drinks were as expected, staff were friendly and helpful, the chicken was fried well and crispy. The not so good— the food was severely underseasoned, the crawfish boil was flavourless and was mostly celery, the Jambalaya was just salty and lacked flavour as well as the chicken.
After looking at all the rave reviews we booked for a celebration and, unfortunately, were very disappointed. Firstly, we were sat on a table right next to the toilet and got a strong waft every time the door was opened. I could also hear all the toilet noises over the live music which was quite off putting really. We had the crayfish boil £38 (flavourless), shrimp and grits £20 (meagre and no redeeming flavour for the price) and corn bread (dry and we asked 2 different wait staff for butter which never came) and the salad which was lovely. Unfortunately, the service was not up to scratch at all. We were mostly ignored and never asked how the meal was. We weren't asked if we wanted more drinks or given any desert menus. Our plates were empty on our table for 20 mins before being cleared and taken quickly away without attending to us. Even a different waiter who took payment didn't ask how we found it. I had a feeling he knew the answer. We would have ordered more and tried to enjoy the music but after waiting so long we just wanted to leave. The live music was the best part although from where we were sat we could not see anything and were distracted from toilet noise. All together we had the food and 3 alcoholic drinks which came to £108 incl the inflated 13.5% service. Absolutely not worth it. We may have had an unlucky experience but it's not good enough for the price.
The absolute worst service. Sat at bar with a local. We ordered oysters at 1113 am during happy hour. Bartender kept saying sorry taking so long, while a stream of dishes, including oysters made their way to others who ordered after. Finally cancelled at 1205, as we had a reservation at their sister restaurant (which is the anti of this, great service). Come on, six oysters? Unless the chef had to drive the ocean, fish the oysters and drive back, there is no excuse. They charged for the 2 beers and left. As we left, this server guy in a yellow soccer jersey asked mockingly, “everything ok?” and my friend said “no” and he started smirking. I said it wasn’t funny and he said “it is f’n hilarious.” If there is such a thing, I would nominate him for worst server in the world. I was circumspect calling this guy out as I am sure he needs the work and would have trouble getting re employed, but I feel its in the public interest. To the owner- you should sell this place, as your other restaurant is amazing and you dont want yellow jersey guy and the general service impinging your reputation.
Very odd service experience. I waited at the bar for several minutes and was visibly ready to order, yet the bartender chose to serve two people who arrived after me. This felt deliberate rather than accidental. Good pubs rely on fair, attentive service — unfortunately that wasn’t the case here.
