What a gem of a pub! We snagged a delightful corner outside, which felt like a secret garden thanks to the lush plants and central trees. It's covered, providing shade and an airy, bright ambiance, and even has an outdoor TV. A major bonus is that the pub is dog-friendly throughout, making it perfect for owners and their furry companions. I particularly appreciated the adjustable tables—no wobbling on the uneven floor! For food, my friend raved about the large and tasty fish and chips, while my crab pasta hit the spot. If you're planning to work remotely, be aware that electrical outlets outside are scarce.

We were seated at the outdoor patios, and the atmosphere was cozy. The food was great and high quality, and the drinks were really nice. I especially enjoyed the gnocchi and fresh bread.

🚇 Hornsey 🍺 £6.75 Estrella Galicia This pub is located just up the road from the Clock Tower in Crouch End, North London. The nearest station is Hornsey. The Maynard Arms was built by developers Joshua Alexander and William Bradshaw in 1851. The Maynard name comes from Stephen Maynard of Islington who was Lord of the Manor of Topsfield in 1356. This large, modern Gastropub has quite the contemporary feel. Upon entering, the servery is on the right, illuminated by industrial pendants. The spacious main bar area wraps around the servery, with a corner banquette to the right and an elevated section to the left. Further inside, there is a dining area with varied seating. The decor includes boarded floors, mixed painted and exposed brick walls, black and white prints, and ample seating. A good-sized beer garden with pergolas is at the rear, and a few benches at the front offer street views. The beer selection was impressive, boasting a good mix of premium and local beers, along with three cask ales. I opted for an Estrella Galicia, my pint hit the spot; price point was as expected. The food menu features classic British pub fare, offering both comfort food options and slightly more elevated dishes. Fish & Chips costs £18, and roasts are available on Sundays. We arrived just after 3pm on a sunny Saturday afternoon in August. The pub was quiet inside, as the majority of punters were outside enjoying the summer sun. There was a upbeat buzz in the beer garden and a chilled, laid-back atmosphere around the bar inside. The service was pleasant; the team on duty were welcoming and courteous. Sometimes walking into a gastropub can feel a bit intimidating when all you want is a pint, and every table is set with a full array of cutlery – but not here. We enjoyed our visit to @themaynardarms; the pub has a nice local feel, and the environment was comfortable. The beer selection will please a wide range of tastes, and you're in the right place if you're after some decent grub. This pub is worth checking out if you're in the area. 📅 17th August 2024 More London pub info on socials @londonpubmap 🍻

I came here today to have a lovely meal with my partner and was met by a beautiful women, Bridie, who went over and above our expectations for the whole service. I haven’t received such service before in any restaurant I’ve been to and I highly appreciate her making date night a memorable experience. Not only was she looking after us impeccably but she was non stop helping others too which shows how hard working and dedicated she is to her job. The food was delicious also, especially the chicken and potato skewers which was our first time trying (I would highly recommend) Thank you so much Bridie for your lovely service that you provided for us we will definitely be coming back. Thank you

Brilliant pub with a lovely beer garden. The team was able to accommodate my large group and reserved the back of the restaurant area for us, which was set up beautifully. The bar has a fantastic selection of non-alcoholic beers alongside other international & local lagers and ales which helped accommodate my group’s interests. The staff were all knowledgeable and helpful - big shoutout to Shankar, Maggie and Maeve and the rest of the team for their support on that day.

Hands down the best Sunday roast in the area! The portion was generous and full of flavour. I tried the chicken roast, and it was cooked perfectly—tender, juicy, and delicious. The vegetarian roast looked great as well, with a hearty and well-presented plate. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a satisfying and well-prepared Sunday meal!

We went for a 40th birthday party and I have to say the food was incredible. I could not stop eating! The service was great and the atmosphere was electric. It was an amazing night. The guy mentioned in the photo below was extremely helpful, friendly and even asked if we needed anything before his shift finished.

Lovely old pub that has improved their food service continuously over the years. Bright and open front lounge seating and tables, quieter restaurant booths at the back and lovely beer garden with shade.

Food was 10/10 the dry aged burger was one of the best I’ve ever had. Our waiter Shanks was AMAZING! He was attentive, patient and gave us great recommendations on food and drinks. He is a great asset to this establishment. I visited from west London for an event nearby and now I know this place is here, I will 100% be back!

Fabulous Sunday spent here! Lovely food and atmosphere. Served by the wonderful Shanks 10 out of 10 service,he was attentive and courteous and just fantastic all round.

SHANKS IS THE BEST SERVER EVER! He advised us what’s best on the menu, ensure all our drinks were made to perfection, and was just an overall kind, fantastic human being. He made our evening here a fabulous experience. One member of our table was gluten free and he advised what would be suitable which was very thoughtful as well as recommending what food was best. We had the steak, fish and chips, fried chicken, Camembert - everything was just as good as Shanks said it would be! We were a group of 10 friends here and we all absolutely loved him. He deserves a raise/promotion/everything his heart desires because he made our visit! Would return again JUST FOR HIM!

Stopped by for the Sweden v England game last night. Paul gave such excellent service and recommended Yes beer as I have a gluten intolerance. Great pub for sports and Paul was a big reason why the atmosphere was so welcoming and hospitable. Will be back again for sure!

I’ve been to the Maynard a few times over the years (don’t live in London) and I’ve never had a bad experience. The food, delectable, the beverages, sublime, the staff (Paul and Savannah) out of this world. Anyone wanting to have a party or just a quick drink and lunch head down there! The Sunday roast is reeeeeeallly good, especially the gammon 👌

Y

On our recent trip to the UK, we wanted a traditional Sunday roast, and the Maynard Arms did not disappoint. Lovely gastropub with delicious food. And the service was outstanding. Special thanks to our excellent server Shanks for ensuring we got those amazing roast potatoes! Cheers from Canada.

The Maynard Arms answered the question, providing us with a good Sunday Roast dinner helping us to have a very chilled afternoon. From the moment I walked in this place was busy, yet chilled; a show of how popular it is with locals. The pub is deceptively big, and the decor is very nice with me getting a rustic feel at every turn of my head. The staff were very friendly and attentive, with me also having a nice conversation with one of the waitresses on my experience, friendly staff always elevate the experience. For lunch I ordered the porchetta, which is something I didn't expect to find on the menu as when it comes to a roast dinner I always favour a nice piece of English pork belly. This was a very different experience with an attempt to fuze a classic Sunday Roast with Rome's famous pork belly, something I've eaten a few times on multiple trips around Italy. Everything on my plate was cooked well, however it was the porchetta that I was a little put off by as it was dryer than usually expected only being more enjoyed with a little gravy which shouldn't be the case with this meat dish. For me it just doesn't sit well with a roast dinner as the flavour profiles greatly differ where a roast dinner is monotone in taste and simple, unlike Italian food which speaks for itself being one of the best cuisines with rich flavours. I would have kept the pork option to the classic British roast pork, rather than offering porchetta. Regardless I liked this pub and I'd definitely shortlist this place for a good place to check in the summertime, as it also has a secretive and big beer garden. So I'll be back to enjoy that when the weather warms up!

Nice hamburger and fries, average sunday rose, wide range of cocktails and beers

I've been going to the Maynard for years now. From going with friends with young babies to friends who just want to drink and have a laugh I feel that the Maynard has one of the most eclectic vibes one can find in north London. PS: their slow roast pork with crackling is one of the best in town...

I would recommend this pub for good gastro lunch. Food was good, but it did take ages to come from the kitchen. Pub is located about 20 minutes walk from Alexandra Palace.

F
Fergus Garber

Everything good. Had the burger. Very nice. Watch out for the extra bacon. £2.50 for a single rasher is very disappointing.

G
Gavin Hudson

It's ok. It's my local. But it's... Just... A four star pub. Tables are never cleared away, like hardly ever, they don't accept cash, the pub always smells of fried food, aside from that it's decent enough, nice seating outside and in, generally friendly, food is decent and some good events on. Perfectly decent, but just misses a bit of something to be a really good pub. Worth a visit and nothing to avoid.

I recently visited Maynard Arms and had an incredible experience, largely thanks to Paul! From the moment I walked in, his attention to detail and expertise with craft beers stood out. He took the time to understand my preferences and made fantastic recommendations that were spot on! If you're a craft beer enthusiast or just looking for a great meal, be sure to ask for Paul when you visit Maynard Arms. His knowledgeable advice and attentive service will make your experience unforgettable!

Came here for a post Boxing Day walk lunch. Service friendly and attentive ( thanks Rafa). Good wine list. Sadly let down by horribly tough flat iron steaks for two of our party. Made our complaint which was handled professionally. Will come back again since it really is a super pub. Thank you.

S

Pity. We heard this was THE place for a Sunday roast, so you would have thought that just after 7pm there would be a good selection, unfortunately they had sold out of half of what was on the menu. The ham roast was both hot and cold. There are other gastro pubs I would recommend before the Maynard. The wines and beers are good but also v expensive. £95 for two ( 2 x beer ,1x glass wine) for a below average meal doesn't make me think of returning.

T
T Farrell

Terrible pint of Guinness. Not only was it badly poured but it had absolutely zero cream factor. If you can’t be bothered to make sure the drink is drinkable then don’t sell it. The food was very average. I had the pulled pork burger and it was very plain. It felt like the pulled pork was bought in and just warmed up. Staff were not very good either. This isn’t a pub, it’s a restaurant and not a very good one. And why are you taking the Christmas decorations down (during opening hours) on 30/12? Is it that hard to leave them up until the 6th January? Or are you celebrating Christmas for the decoration and not as a religious holiday?

C
Chris Ned

I really want to like the Maynard Arms, but I feel disappointed from my last visit. £11 for an Aperol Spritz that mainly consists of water (ice, soda, Prosecco, Aperol)? You got to be kidding me. If you charge £11 for a Spritz, you better make it worth it and not serve a watered down version of such an iconic drink. Sure, it looks great, but it had zero buzz to it. As for the volume of the drink, it was below average in my opinion.

I’ve seen a couple of reviews on here specifically about the service on Mother’s Day and have to say that, yes, it was an absolute shambles. However, we were given an apology by the manager on shift who’s obviously not to blame. And the staff on shift were working really hard despite everything around them being chaotic. I’m not sure who was in charge of managing the bookings for Mother’s Day but the only reason I’m writing this email is to highlight the fact that it’s such a shame that today went so badly as I bought my mum and family specifically because it’s my favourite roast dinner in London. But we received it an hour and 45 after we’d ordered. We’d had to go and order at the bar as we’d been sat down for 25 minutes and not been seen to by anyone. The only time someone came to see to our table was when our food eventually arrived and that was to give us cutlery and tell us our starters were forgotten 5 minutes after our mains had been sat in front of us. The food itself was cold and the portions looked like they’d been halved compared to what people had received around us earlier on. There were no clean tables around us, all of them were stacked up with empty plates. Whilst we were there, which ended up being over 2 hours because of the wait, no one in our section received table service or had their tables cleaned. They were clearly understaffed so I felt awful for them. Apparently the kitchen weren’t prepared for the amount of orders they’d received despite a booking system being in place and them taking on walk in orders? I feel awful for the team on today and hope that because of the these reviews something is done to make sure there’s more support as they head into summer.

Waited 40 minutes for a sausage sandwich for it to arrive with one single sausage cut up in the sandwich. Shame because it tasted nice but how can you quarter one single sausage and call it a sandwich.

R
Ruby Kiro

My partner and I had heard great things about the roast but unfortunately we were quite disappointed in comparison to some of the other local pub roasts we have had- especially for the price. The staff were lovely and hospitable but the quality of what we received unfortunately did not live up to expectations.

T
Thomas Jenkins

Its a nice pub during the day however the service on NYE was unprofessional. The bartenders were way too drunk and one of them gestured the "L" sign (for loser) in my face when I ordered a single shot mixed drink instead of a double.

J
JayBee Bee

Hard to get a table away from screaming kids who shouldn't be there on Friday evenings, when you try to avoid them the kitchen staff noisily clang handfuls of cutlery into catering trays for a whole hour. I like an open kitchen but not like that. There's some plus points but totally ruined by the noisy kitchen staff and screaming babies. Not what Friday and Saturday nights should be about.
