Really delicious food - loved the beetroot and goat cheese appetiser, the crab crostini, the mussels, the halibut, the gnocchi, the venison and the sirloin (though the last one one was chewy at certain parts). There’s aren’t too many veggie options but what’s there is nice. The ambiance is lovely and cozy. Service was good, although they took a long time with our mains and then weren’t able to offer dessert as they needed our table for the next reservation - they were apologetic about this and gave us negronis on the house (which were delicious) that we enjoyed at the bar. Will need to come back for dessert! Came back for lunch and the food was just as yum - loved the monkfish curry, the gnocchi and the pork mains. Still haven’t had dessert here so will def come back! Came back for dinner - loved the hake and the halibut. Good wine list!
We had the Sunday roast with the Chicken (for 2 people) and one beef. Very delicious and I think the best is the vegetables. The portion is huge. Beef is good. The potatoes and the Yorkshire pudding are more crispy type. Scotch eggs are good too. It’s a very popular place, better to reserve early. We walked in and can only sat at the outdoor tables, which is okay as the weather was not bad. Nice place for trying Sunday roast.
So happy that we chose to come here as our Sunday Roast while on holiday in the UK. The atmosphere was lovely, the food was absolutely delicious (easily the BEST Scotch Egg that I've ever eaten), the staff and our server were all very kind and attentive, and I thoroughly enjoyed chatting about wine with the owner (excellent selection by the glass!) I've already recommended The Pig and Butcher to several friends and will certainly return on our next visit across the pond! Thank you so much for a lovely experience!
Probably the best Sunday Roast I have ever had ( been there already 3x times!) Every time I think about it I can still feel the taste in my mouth. Especially I love the sharing platter, meat is lovely cooked, tender and juicy. Vegetable super fresh, crunchy and glazed. Potatoes are crispy and delicious-best I’ve ever had. Nice selection of wines. Everything was delicious. Even my English friends keep asking when will we be back again! It’s not easy as it gets booked out so make sure you make reservations in advance ( like 2-3 weeks) especially for groups over 4. Ambience is nice, clean and rather modern. Staff is polite but not over the top, just what you need. Highly recommend it.
this was a lovely pub. It was completely booked out which is an indication of how good it is, the atmosphere was great. It was a very light pub which meant that we didn’t mind sitting inside on such a nice day. We got the scotch egg to start, this was sensational - without a doubt one of the best I’ve ever tried. We then got the Sunday roast, I got the porcetta. Warning, on a Sunday the roast is the only option to get for mains, so if you wanted to eat something else I’d come another day of the week. The roast was great, everything was done really well and it was a very generous portion, I thoroughly enjoyed it. If I was being highly critical I think the roast potatoes could’ve been fluffier. I got the house white and it was delicious. A great pub!
The Pig and Butcher is a lovely restaurant with a lovely ambiance, the staff and waiter are all very friendly and attentive, and the food is absolutely delicious. The scotch egg was perfect, crispy on the outside and plump on the inside, with a vibrant orange runny yolk and a touch of flaky salt. For my main course, I had the pork belly, which was also perfect. The skin was super crispy, the meat was juicy and the layers of fat between them were delicious. I loved the abundance of vegetables and the potatoes on the side.
We planned for a small town hall wedding with just our witnesses and our family decided to join in from abroad, so we needed somewhere special for a small family gathering. We communicated via email to choose menus and confirm the booking and although the email communication was very slow and it took several emails to resolve all queries, we would repeat again and again for all our celebrations. We had to choose from one of the set menus and of course, we chose the one with the Beef Wellington and it did not disappoint. Most of the guests came from France and Spain and they have very high standards when it comes to food, specially meat. They all left saying it was one of the best food experiences they had in a while. The scallops were melting in the mouth, the wellington was superb and the right cooking, the fish was fresh and the vegetarian was spot on. I didn't manage to get to the desserts but everyone had high praise. The staff was very attentive, nice and accommodating and we couldn't be more thankful.
The roasts were absolutely delicious! As a vegetarian who hates mushrooms it’s so lovely having a roast that’s not some sort of mushroom wellington! The pork roasts and cauliflower cheese were fab too. The cheesecake, so yummy I have already gushed about it to anyone who will listen! Our server was amazing, she was very attentive and sweet, massive thanks to her! Honestly, the first Sunday roast in a long while that i’ve not been disappointed with :)
We had a delicious Sunday roast here. Found it hard to decide which option to go for as they all were enticing. Opted for beef for 2 and lamb for 2. The meat was great quality, there were a good range of sides, massive yorshire puds. One of our kids is a picky eater and loved it all. Service was attentive and the place looked great. Will definitely be coming here again!
I can't really place why I didn't LOVE this Sunday roast, but I didn't. It still deserves the 5 stars because it was objectively flawless, just needed a little salt I think, and definitely more gravy but they brough me more once I asked. The scotched egg was also good, but the ginger pig's is better.
My family was visiting from Hong Kong, and since it was a Sunday, I brought them to The Pig and Butcher to try some proper English food. We were all so impressed. The food was amazing— the crispy pork crackling, scotch egg , are all full of flavour, and the Sunday roast was absolutely delicious. We were a group of hour but only ordered two sunday roast since none of us eat a lot. Not only did the staff not mind, they were incredibly kind and even offered us extra plates to share without us asking. That kind of thoughtfulness really stood out. It also happened to be my birthday, and my family quietly asked if the staff could write a little ‘happy birthday’ message with the dessert. To our surprise, they brought out an extra dessert with ‘Happy Birthday’ written on it and even added a candle. It was such a seeet and generous gesture. The staff were genuinely warm and welcoming, and the food was top quality. My family said this was the most relaxed and happiest meal they had during the whole UK trip. Highly recommend visiting — it’s a place that truly cares.
A very lucky find on google 😁 One of four restaurants three quite local and one in Shoreditch 😁 Nice friendly welcome having made reservations😁 Two distinct dining areas both very nice. We had a very nice waiter 😁 so service was very good. Small menu but contains some real bangers 😁 Charcuterie plate for me filled by the best steak chips and peppercorn sauce I’ve had for a long time. We all had the steak and agreed that it was very very well cooked therefore we were super happy. Extensive wine list but we stuck with the house wine which was good 🍷🍷 Busy service but staff coped really well. Not too expensive and would happily go back or visit another of their places😁👏 Nice atmosphere, clean toilets although the really nice smellies for the hands weren’t working 😳 Happy choice and happy customers 😁🏴👍🏼
I had an amazing experience here for a traditional Sunday Roast. The food was absolutely delicious; the meat was cooked to perfection and the sides (especially the cauliflower cheese with Ogleshield!) were flavorful and authentic. The atmosphere is lovely—cosy, vibrant, and exactly what you'd want from a top-tier London pub. A special shout-out to the staff: the service was incredibly fast and attentive. We were on a tight schedule to catch a flight, and they made sure everything was seamless without ever making us feel rushed. Highly recommended for anyone looking for great food and a welcoming vibe in Islington. I’ll definitely be back!
Amazing place for Sunday lunch! Went with my son whilst visiting him in Islington. We were seated quickly and shown upstairs. The place was already just about full with people eating. We looked through the menu and decieded to share a shoulder of lamb with an extra of cauliflower cheese! It came out within 5 mins, roasting hot and the lamb falling off the bone! Everything was delicious and plenty of it! The waitress was lovely and brought us extra gravy, and quickly changed the drinks when I accidentally got the wrong one. The whole place had a lovely atmosphere with everyone that we came across being lovely and friendly. Will definitely come again when I visit my son
Milo was amazing!! So lovely and such great service. Very accomodating and hospitable. The food was absolutely amazing as well. Highly recommend coming here for dinner and drinks! The sommelier was super helpful as well. Recommended the most beautiful and most rare wine!
The food was crazy! Portion was huge but so delicious!!!!! The cote de beuf could be shared between 3 or even 4! But everything is delicious
This is one of my favourite gastro pubs in London. Have been there three times, not disappointed once. This time I ordered their signature pig dish again. I was happy with the quality. The only slight snug is perhaps presentation. Lamb was also very good. Service was just simply delightful. All the waiters were so genuinely helpful & all smiles.
This was my second visit to the pig and butcher. The food is prepared perfectly. Everything just tastes amazing, without being over spiced. It has a freshness that adds to the flavour. The staff were also very polite, quick and attentive. I ordered a spicy margarita that wasn't on the menu, yet they made it and made it well. Would highly recommend and will definitely return
Easily the best roast dinner available in London. Homely, relaxed and fantastic service. Porchetta is a must if you get there before it runs out! Would happily visit every Sunday. Staff a super friendly and knowledgeable towards the menu that changes daily. Seasonal ingredients brought out in their finest form.
5/5! Best roast I’ve had in London. The chicken and veggies were so fresh. Lovely ambiance too. Will definitely be back!!
Love this place!!!! Booked the feasting menu and was blown away. Despite it being a busy time, the dishes were perfectly cooked and the servers were attentive to my table. Overall the quality of the food/cooking, the service and the restaurant ambiance were all excellent. Highly recommend for special occasions, group meals or even casual solo nights out. Many thanks to Tom, Olivia, Susie and Fritz, and the talented kitchen crew for one of my happiest memories of the holidays x
We really enjoyed our experience at the pig and butcher. Let's start with the food: we both had Sunday Roasts, beef and pork. Both were really good, it's tru the portions aren't massive but they do fill your plate and there are a lot of potatoes so you won't leave feeling hungry - you'll actually have to struggle to get dessert in. I was so impressed by the vegetables, I've never had them so good on a Sunday roast. The greens were cooked perfectly, the flavour was so delicate, I absolutely loved them. The Yorkshire pudding was massive and perfectly cooked as well. The cauliflower cheese is also well cooked. So far it's been one of the best Sunday roasts we've had in London. The atmosphere of the pub is also quite nice, although we found the room to be a bit cold. Service was attentive and recommended a wonderful dessert (salted caramel something something) that we really enjoyed. It is quite expensive so not sure we'll be back, but we're happy to have finally tried it (had to book almost two months in advance!!)
The food was crazy! Portion was huge but so delicious!!!!! The cote de beuf could be shared between 3 or even 4! But everything is delicious
How could a meal which starts with Bread plus Whipped Salted Butter and Beef Dripping Dip not get a five stars? Service was very attentive and friendly, and setting was perfect. Great value for money and look forward to the next time.
Exceptional on all fronts! Booked the private room for a birthday party and can’t speak highly enough of the food, service and atmosphere in the room! Beef wellington was a standout dish that I will be coming back for more of!
Saturday lunch was fabulous for food and service. we started with sourdough bread with whipped butter and beef dripping...so simple and yet so scrumptious! we then had the gnocchi and pork belly plus triple cooked chips. everything 5*. a real shame for the atmosphere: every single table around us had a dog. I love them, but not having three dogs poking around me while enjoying a meal. also, it gets very loud, so all in all not the best place for a date
Had a nice experience before Christmas at the Pig & Butcher. Best part of the experience was our waiter. I had the steak which I wouldn’t recommend - it was just ok with a big bit of gristle and sadly chips were cold. Everyone else really enjoyed their food so I’d recommend the sharing pie or pork belly. Friends who got desserts really enjoyed. Nice cosy atmosphere.
Went for a Sunday roast - it was quite average. The standout was the red cabbage which was really tasty, but the meat (beef) wasn’t particularly tender and the roast potatoes were very hard and a little undercooked. I’d heard really good things about the Roasts here so was a bit disappointed. Same story with spritz, starter, and dessert. It was average but obviously priced above average. Service was good though and the atmosphere was nice.
3 of us turned up here on a Sunday with no booking on the off chance of getting a table. The lady at the door was friendly, warm and welcoming and found us a table for lunch, which we were very pleased with. The scotch egg was delicious and the Sunday roast was ok. My husband and mother in law opted for the lamb for 2 and I went for the beef. I found the potatoes a bit too dry. I had to ask for more gravy to be able to enjoy it. Overall, very attentive service, great atmosphere and a lovely venue.
Top notch gastro pub fare. We had a lovely Easter Sunday roast. Scotch eggs were delicious and the boquerones had tang and bite. Lovely warm bread with whipped butter and dripping if you fancied a bit of blood clotter. Decent roasts - porchetta was good but I would suggest needed more stuffing to be authentic. Roast lamb shoulder fell off the bone. Very good roasts spuds. Friendly service, delicious pints, good wine list. We finished with a very good peanut parfait. You can’t go wrong.
Came here on a friend’s recommendation for Sunday roast. We didn’t have a reservation but were seated outside without issue. We ordered two portions of the aged sirloin roast, but the meat was extremely tough—veiny, chewy, and nearly impossible to eat. We were pretty disappointed. The server brought out one portion of porchetta as a replacement without asking if we ate pork, which seemed like an odd assumption to make… That said, the porchetta was great. Juicy, tender, and cooked just right. However, we were still charged for the sirloin, along with a service fee and another “optional” charge that was never mentioned to us. While the staff were friendly, the service felt disorganized. We spoke to three different female servers, and none of them seemed fully on top of things. Overall, a confusing and underwhelming experience.
If it wasn’t for the ridiculously overpriced wine list and the fact that the overpriced white was served warm, 5 stars. Perfectly cooked scotch egg, nice runny yolk, though the outside was a bit over crisp. The scallop and black pudding was elegant and tasty. The crab gratin also wonderful. And the pork cheek with black pudding beautifully done. Friendly efficient service. Wish they allowed you to bring your own wine. Would happily pay corkage
So the place must be in hype since my friend booked for the Sunday roast one month ago and the only time was after 5.30 pm. This said the food was ok the chicken we had was good but the tenderloin was a bit hard to chew. The place itself is nice inside. If this was the end no problem. At the end the clear the table and we ask for the dessert menu which arrives and 1 min after the dessert menu the manager/waiter tells us that we have 10 min before the table has to be vacated. Now clearly they could have cleared the table faster then but interestingly it was not 7.30 pm (so the 2hours) but 7.04. When we said that we had still time the reasoning was that since 2 of my friends arrived earlier and had a drink, once the table was free they were told the table was free so they took a seat at 7.14 …… so the 2 hours start from there…..clearly despite him trying to argue and also quite rudely in my opinion we left (because noi point to argue when the discussion is with somebody trying to convince you are wrong) and of course we did not get the dessert. All in all it is not a place I would recommend going since there are plenty of really nice Sunday roast with friendly staff which does not have a timer, also because the food was ok not superlative so …. Yeah not a nice experience at all
If you like expensive, bland micheline guide (worthy apparently) food, then this is the place for you. After 3 months of anticipated constant rejection at the door as a walk in customer, I finally came across the opportunity to have this highly talked about Sunday roast. I literally was on my way to sainsburys to go buy ingredients to make a Sunday roast at home. However, seeing there was an outside table free, on a 30 degree day, I jumped at the chance and went for it. It took about 15 minutes before a server took notice of us, who then informed me that I'd need to wait for a waitress/waiter as they are more qualified to take our order. Shocking!! Anyway, after having looked at the menu, we realised that there wasn't much option for individuals on the sunday roast menu other than a sirloin cut. The rest were either overly priced or too much food for one to handle. The waitress that eventually took our order was pleasant and attentive. The roast eventually came out (cold) after a 35 minute wait. The potatoes were bitter for some reason, the meat was served on a bed of shaved carrots. The undercooked slither of parsnip, and yet more carrot in a slither form with very watery tasteless gravy. Yorkshire pudding was 30 seconds away from burnt and also boasted a cardboard like texture. I hate to go on here, but the hype around this place definitely has people flocking to it. Just like me! However, if you know your roasts or just your food in general the pig and butcher do not deserve that Michelin guide recognition nor does that long waiting list to get a table or 50 pound booking fee when booking ahead of time. Try it, you may like it. But it sure is the last time I go. Its a shame as I only live across the road from it.
It was my first time here…and probably my last. We were in a group, so I expected a bit of a wait, but 45 (at least) minutes for food felt excessive. To make it worse, the place was uncomfortably hot. No air conditioning on a summer day, candles everywhere, packed with people, and tight and uncomfortable seating… not ideal. The food looked nice, but it was overpriced and didn’t live up to the presentation. On a positive note, the service was lovely. The lady serving us was attentive, kind, and clearly aware things weren’t running smoothly. She was even apologising while visibly sweating from the heat..felt sorry for her, to be honest.
The food is not a good as it used to be. I've been once before and really loved the roast - my most recent visit I cannot say the same. The service was quite slow and the wait for food was equally slow. It's quite hot and loud in there. Not the best value for money, somehow the chicken is more expensive than the pork? Doesn't quite make sense.
Disappointing Service at The Pig and Butcher. I recently visited The Pig and Butcher for the first time for Sunday roast. The setting is undeniably charming, with a lovely atmosphere and tasteful interior design. Unfortunately, my experience was marred by exceptionally poor service. We initially ordered scotch eggs to start, but no alcohol since some in our group are recovering from addiction. This was when our server Claudio changed from friendly to cold. To be blunt, he was borderline rude. Maybe he felt that we wouldn't be spending enough since we didn't order alcoholic drinks, because from that moment, he paid no attention to us. I had to stand up and chase him down to order our mains two times before he finally showed up at our table again. That took around 45 minutes. After finally taking our orders, he never returned to check on us. At the end of the meal, we considered ordering a dessert, but decided not to. I again had to ask him three times for the bill. Interestingly, he was exceptionally attentive and warm to the table next to ours. We were all really confused as to what we had done wrong to receive such service - all we could figure was that we didn't order drinks. He left us feeling unwelcome. The food itself was overall decent. I absolutely loved the scotch eggs! They were probably the best I have ever had. However, our roasts were a bit inconsistent. Mine was very tender and delicious, but two others in my party really struggled with how tough theirs were. The porchetta, in particular, was very dry. I had high expectations for The Pig and Butcher, given its reputation and the beautiful setting. Sadly, the lack of attentive service from Claudio left me very disappointed. While I may give the restaurant a second chance based on the positive reviews I've heard, this initial visit has certainly dampened my enthusiasm.
Vegan, vegetarian, Jewish people, Muslims and people with allergies be aware ! This pub is not dietary restrictions friendly. They served me pork, it was not written on the menu (see pictures below). The chef did not even admit to it. At least the waitress was apologetic and did a commercial gesture by offering me the glass of wine I already drank. I had the same dish the day before and I’m 100% sure it was not pork. So inconsistent ! I use to like this pub, now it’s blacklisted.
Don't eat here if you have any food allergies or intolerance. Despite communicating at booking, arrival and ordering i was 'glutened ' as a coeliac, no fun. The waiter in charge on the night did have the decency to tell me there had been a communicatikn mistake and was apologetic. It ruined the evening and we had to leave a family meal early and I was very ill. The menu isn't marked up with any potential allergies so you're in the hands of service staff and their ability to communicate with kitchen. I've looked back at previous reviews since my experience and others have experienced similar. So Despite assurances from management since that they've reviewed their processes I'm doubtful! Hence I haven't taken up their offer of a complimentary meal ! Stay well clear.
What a terrible experience. I can't believe we actually paid for this. Service was appauling, every table was complaining. Food was cold, server was very rude and unapologetic. He said he would take some food off the menu due to our awful experience, but never did and instead charged us for things we didn't order. Wine came after our cold meal. Took 20 minutes to seat us. Really expensive and uncomfortable experience. Have the decency to be apologetic and take some things off the bill as a gesture for a terrible night. We were there for 3.5 hours for 2 courses. Honestly this place is a joke.
