Yelp’s #1 in 2023 and 4.8 rating by 2000+ raters couldn’t be more convincing. Nonetheless, the long-line and long-wait comments were terrifying. Good thing, I figured that online pre-order’s available and pickup time could also be preset, TOTAL WIN! Occupying a space in this fully air-conditioned food-court alike space in downtown, it’s pretty convenient dining area. Besides, weekend lunch time wasn’t as insanely crowded as I imagined (not sure if it’s just coincidence). The attendant was super kind and attentive, making the experience seamless. I got their beef as protein, served with your choice of sides, which I went for the purple rice and Korean greens. The beef was juicy and tender, surprisingly more on the sweet side (I expected it to be savory), but it’s such delectable astonishment. Besides, the tangy savory dipping sauce balanced it flawlessly. Portion wise OMG certainly worth the bucks. Tons of carbs and proteins, and for me this could easily go into 2 servings. Not to forget, even the sides were so good; the rice somewhat reminded me of sticky rice and the Korean Greens seasoning was my highlight! Should you wanna splurge like me, go for extra grilled sausages. My guesstimate they’re pork. Flavorful and came as extra delicacy!
This is a great place for your craving of Hawaiian food. The owner was very helpful and courteous. The food was much better than all the places I had l tried when I was in Hawaii. The garlic shrimps here are 1000000 times better than all the hyped places in the North Shore area. The beef plate is out of this world too. I don't think you can go wrong with any dish here. Go give BROKEN MOUTH a try, you won't be disappointed. Highly highly recommend BROKEN MOUTH to everyone.
BEST HAWAIIAN FOOD IN THE AREA!!!!! ORDER AHEAD!!!!!! Been coming here since it opened and it’s the main reason I look forward to coming to DTLA when I go to my tailor in the fashion district!!!! The food is AMAZING, consistent, and worth the price 🤤 Also the owner Tim is from Hawaii and is seriously the nicest person!!! He’s given me drinks and spam Musubis on the house and everything was delicious 🥹 The food can be best described as Hawaiian-Korean food which can be read as 100% authentic Hawaiian. I usually get the garlic butter shrimp and the meat jun and both are a 10/10. The shrimp is meant to be eaten with the shell on and the texture and flavor are phenomenal! The meat jun has the most unique texture of anything I’ve had and it’s a marinated ribeye that is dredged in a flour/egg mixture and pan fried. It’s amazingly tasty and unique and us mainlanders shouldn’t miss out on this one 🤩 The sides are phenomenal too, the purple rice is like the best rice I’ve ever had and the potato mac salad is rich but somehow light and fluffy. 😋 On my most recent visit I tried the short rib plate which was 11/10 and definitely worth getting!!! When ordering I thought they were sold out but Tim had a couple in the back and was nice enough to give me the order he was cooking so I wouldn’t have to wait. Customer service here is above and beyond!!!! For parking it’s metered street parking in DTLA and there’s also a reasonable parking lot close by. Since the food is ordered ahead you can also do a quick 3 minute pickup. Please support this amazing gem of a local business 🙏
This place hit home if you live in California but are from Hawaii. One of my best friends owns this place and won best restaurant on yelp. His food is so delicious and they keep it simple. Best thing too do is order online because they are always busy. If you want korean/hawaiian fusion food then this place is for you. The owner is very dedicated too his staff and the food he serves. You get a taste of hawaii im every bite.
This place is bomb. I was getting my car fixed downtown and had some time to kill, and was hungry. I went in around 2 PM and it was super chill. No crazy line or anything. Purple rice was great and I could eat the short ribs everyday. Good vibe and a good place to grab a bite solo
just WOW!!!! Came all the way from Texas with the intention of trying this place after seeing it on TT and I’d go again just to eat here again and again. We got the garlic shrimp and beef with Mac salad & it was amazing 😍 we ordered last minute and they didn’t cut any corners with our food and the owner (i think it was the owner) gave us complimentary drinks. Service was immaculate and even though we came almost at closing (traffic was terrible coming from Hollywood) we were still greeted and welcomed. :)
My kids and I love Hawaiian food and actually go there mostly to eat! There is a dish served in Korean restaurants called Meat Jun and you can't find it on the mainland (for the most part). This place makes it and it did not disappoint! Exceptionally good! The other food was great too. The service was very friendly and I felt like I was back in Hawaii! We will definitely be back!
This spot is an absolute gem. Went for the first time today, the owner was super kind and helpful. I got the shrimp plate, cucumber kimchi, and a spam musubi. Maybe three different people I passed by with the bag commented on how good it smelled? It tasted even better. Perfectly crunchy and flavorful shrimps, amazing cucumbers, and the spam musubi was so so good. Purple rice is where it’s at. I think you generally are supposed to order online ahead of time, but the service was great and the food was to die for.
First time visit and the owner was very nice and sweet!! Great customer service!! The teriyaki dish, cucumber side and the sausage was the bomb I needed for sauce lol!! I was so hungry I forgot to take pictures 😋 I wasn't a fan of the shrimp and the spam masubi but that's okay it still had good flavor to it!! I will definitely visit again when I come back in town! Parking was a little challenging but worked out. Definitely recommend!
A dear friend has shown me this place in DT LA known for being ranked the top in the nation by Yelp in 2023. This place was ranked #1 for a reason! WOW! I hope the place would grow in good, blessed ways for the sake of the whole community as well. I got the tofu plate and was blown away by the light, crispy exterior and well balanced sauces. The two sides I got were the rice and salad. The rice was incredible as well - it made me realize that I don’t get to come across this kind of rice as often outside of home. I love purple rice. The salad reminded me of the Korean salads that I would get at KBBQ restaurants except for a twist and well proportioned greens that made the whole plate a wonderful, strengthening meal! Drinks were offered to us on the house an I got the guava juice. There are three different kinds of guava juice to choose from so if you are a guava juice fan - the world is your oyster. I appreciated the organization of making online orders to pick up later. Everything is streamlined well - I get that this is done so to focus more on the quality of food. If you go around early afternoon on a weekend there’s actually not that many people which I consider the golden hour hahaha. I pray for there to be renovations to the entire place though. The bathrooms were falling apart, which was a bit of a disappointment. However, this place is indeed a hidden gem. There’s something in this food that I hunger to see more of in the whole DT LA community. God bless you all.
The food was amazing. I had the garlic shrimp menu with purple rice and cucumber kimchi. The cucumber kimchi was amazing, the shrimp was very meaty and jusssssttt perfect, and the ricr also very deliciuous. Seasoned perfectly with furkikake. The gentlemen there offered us complimentary drinks and a spam musubi. The musubi was the best I had. I want to go back there for the beef menu 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Genuinely so delicious! If you are looking for good hearty food worth the price in downtown LA, this is the place to go. The owner is super sweet and will give you great advice on what to choose. I got the teriyaki chicken with purple rice and it was truly drool worthy. Plus the coffee was delicious! The owner was super sweet after helping us and gave us our drinks on the house too. This is how you run a business!!!
Amazing! MUST TRY if you go to Downtown Los Angeles, California!!! Food was so delicious and portions are big. It's worth the hype. Also the owner is a humble man. He suggested to order ahead at least 30 minutes so that you get your food fresh. He was super friendly and helpful. Please stop by whenever you can. Broken Mouth restaurant is #1 !!! Drove from Las Vegas to LA for this ...Thank you for everything. We will be back
Delicious, highly recommend. Only had a few items from Broken Mouth but I was never disappointed. My favorite is the spam masubi. I have a soft spot for spam masubi but Broken Mouth's version of masubi was unexpected and incredible, sometimes I just order like 5 of them for lunch 😋 The purple rice is always cooked perfectly, the green sauce is grainy but gives the masubi a great texture. All other dishes, sausage, shrimp, bread pudding etc were also very good but that masubi... I think about it weekly. Located downtown so parking can be difficult, I am unsure about parking nearby. Place itself is located on the bottom floor of apartments I believe, has other restaurants nearby/in the space so gives off a unique and fun cafeteria vibe. Plenty of tables available in the center for dining or hanging out. Staff is always friendly and service is always quick so great for my office day lunch runs. Buon Appetito, Piatto Pulito 😋
The food was so good! We really loved both dishes and the musubi was perfectly soft. The galbi was so melt in your mouth I would recommend getting it if you ever see it on the menu. Cucumber salad was crunchy and tangy. Don't be intimidated by the big pile of spice on top the spice level is mild. Service was very friendly! The owner is super nice and joked around with us when I accidentally said "mac and cheese" instead of mac salad. Speaking of! The mac salad is very unique. It's extremely creamy and I would say it's more like a great potato salad than your typical hawaiian mac salad. Still very delish and a good in-between after the rich meat. 10/10 would come again. Wish it wasn't down town! there's one parking lot nearby with a $10 price but it's a slightly longer walk
Broken Mouth is fantastic! It is Korean Hawaiian food. Two of my favorite cuisines together. I had the Kalbi Plate Lunch with Cucumbers Kimchi and the Purple Rice. The Kalbi beef short ribs use high quality meat marinated in a delicious original sauce. The Kimchi and purple rice are creative and masterfully done. I also had the Spam Musibi which was so delicious. It's a little hard to find because it is in a big artsy looking building with a couple of other restaurants.
PHENOMENAL Hawaiian food. We tried the steak, chicken, and shrimp and they were all super flavorful and delicious (and very generous portion sizes)! Also highly recommend the cucumber kimchi. Super friendly service but they are (understandably) very busy so make sure to order ahead online!
5 stars with over 2,000 reviews? Yeah, Broken Mouth definitely lives up to its rating and hype! *Tips* We read the reviews and followed people’s tips on ordering ahead for take out and thank goodness we did! Highly recommend doing that and also having someone drive with you if possible so that you can just get out of the car and pick it up. Broken Mouth is located Downtown LA so parking is usually a nightmare. Environment: It shares a building with a couple other businesses and there’s communal seating for the whole building. There were some high and low seating. I went on a Saturday afternoon and it wasn’t packed. Service: I came in 10 minutes earlier than my set pick up time and they were still apologetic for it being late haha! The food came out perfectly on time and it was fresh. I met the owner Timothy and he was so nice, welcoming, and personable! Loved seeing him work up front! Food: SPAM MUSUBI ($4.25): very delicious with their yummy purple rice. BEEF ($21.50): their famous Meat Jun. The egg-battered beef slices really melted in your mouth. It was sooo good with the sauce. SHRIMP ($19.50): garlic butter shrimp with shells on. You can choose to peel it off but I opted to eat the shells on because it added to the flavor. Probably the best garlic shrimp I’ve had. I also bought Lee’s Hot Sauce ($1) on the side. I recommend getting this if you like a little spice in your meal. The plate lunches come with purple rice and Mac. The purple rice was a total game changer as it complemented the meat and the shrimp well. The Potato Mac, however, was not my favorite. For me personally, I prefer it without the potatoes but everyone has their own preferences! Overall: One of the best Hawaiian food I’ve had here in California. I wish I lived closer but I would definitely come back again. Remember to order ahead!
We’re visiting the city and came across this spot online — so glad we did! The food was amazing, and the portions are huge — definitely worth the price. We ordered the teriyaki chicken plate, which was super flavorful and perfectly seasoned. The owner (we think it was the owner?) was incredibly friendly and even offered us a free drink! 🥤 When my boyfriend picked up our order, we noticed he also included a cute spam seaweed wrap — such a thoughtful touch and totally unexpected. We loved the food so much we wanted to go back the same day, but unfortunately, they close at 6pm 😭 Highly recommend this place if you’re in town — delicious food, great value, and wonderful service. We’ll definitely be back next time we visit!
The eatery is located on the outskirts of Little Tokyo in Downtown LA. Anticipate a difficult time finding parking. We found street parking that was $6/hr. This place is located in a small food court that features a few other eateries as well. Not too crowded when we came around 2 PM on a Friday but I can imagine it would get crowded during regular meal times. The building overall gives a very modern grunge vibe. Not my typical cup of tea but that’s LA for ya. The food itself was excellent. We got the local breakfast, galbi plate, and 1 spam musubi. Everything came with purple rice which I LOVE. The cashier (maybe manager or owner??) threw in some free drinks and a free spam musubi on the house which brought the amount of food we got versus how much we paid (~$60 pre tip) up to par with my expectations. Super grateful to him for hooking it up. So overall, food is excellent, location is not. But if you can see past that, would definitely warrant at least one visit.
Order ahead, otherwise prepare for over an hour of waiting for your food. The service is awesome but the area is typical of the DTLA landscape now. I think overall it's not as crazy as people say and I'm probably going to get some hate for saying that! Cucumber Kimchi is delicious and a must have. Potato Mac Salad was alright but a little watery. Beef - Hawaiian Meat Jun was delicious but I would say the meat to breading ratio was too high, the sauce was awesome. Teri Chicken is good but nothing mind blowing. Shrimp was great and reminded me of a shrimp truck on the island but I'd personally not eat it with the skin, but if you don't you lose some flavor and crispness. It's also a bit pricey. Bread pudding could use some sauce, maybe a vanilla creme? Local Breakfast I'd pass on next time.
