Opinions de Checker Hall Los Angeles
Fabulous food in a stunning interior!! What I really cannot wrap my head around is why over all these years I have not come here sooner even though Checker Hall is absolutely within my immediate neighborhood. Located on the second floor, next to the Lodge Room (used for concerts and other venues), the restaurant has an adorable interior and atmosphere. Service knowledgeable. But really, the food was exceptionally good and fabulously blended various flavors with a touch of spiciness. The whipped feta is a must, the halloumi fatoush was priceless, I loved the cauliflower, and the branzino could not have been more tender and juicy, it was perfect. Couldn’t resist the delicious dessert (pot de crème), and … in contrast to Bestia or the Wife and the Somm, Checker Hall has a tasty expresso to round up the experience. (OpbmoY)
I will be coming back to this place. Great location if you’re wanting to show people around from out of town, or dine out in style with inspiring flavors! Everything we had was incredibly delicious! 1) Whipped feta was so creamy and the pita hot and soft. Delightful appetizer to the point where we asked them to leave the dish so we could sop up all the remnants of feta 😂 2) Hallumi salad - refreshing, savory, beautiful 3) Beef Kafta - so tender and flavorful 4) Chicken Schnitzel - A TABLE FAVORITE ❤️ comes with salads and slaw to top off and 3 sauces that tasted excellent when combined altogether. 5) Mussels with Thai coconut flavors - THIS WAS MY FAVORITE ❤️ could have enjoyed more of this buttery toasted bread with the sauce all night 6) Japanese Sweet potatoes - carmelized crisp parts were incredible. Slight kick and zest to it - ALSO A FAVORITE 7) Pork Belly with picked radish Parking was easy in the metered lot across the street $0.80/hr (what a steal in LA) and free 2hr street parking available as well on the side street. Definitely coming back and thought it would make an excellent gift for someone too! Oh and Sundays and Mondays they had a jazz pianist with an upright bassist. It was perfect ambiance for dinner conversation with friends!
Consistently the best dining experience in LA. I’ve been to Checker for every special occasion and regular occasion since 2022. I was making yet another reservation and realized I’m way overdue for a review! It just hits on every level. The food only gets better as they iterate on the menu, the atmosphere is perfect at every time of day, the staff is great. They just nail it. It doesn’t get old. Huge thank you for all the amazing experiences, cheers to many more!
EXCELLENT vegan options - truly plant based craft mastery! Kudos to the executive chef & all who worked to create such delicious vegan food!
This place is a VIBE! The building itself is vintage and all of the decor is so intricate and gives you a warm, nostalgic feeling. We came on a Friday night and there was a DJ playing some great ambient tunes. But make no mistake, the food is the highlight of this magnificent establishment! The Baba Ganoush was so different from anything I’ve had before and it was DELICIOUS. We also had the King Salmon Skewer and the Spiced Chicken Skewer. Both were AMAZING and the chicken literally melted in my mouth. We also had the Chicken Schnitzel, which was great also. The cocktails and desserts are also great, and the service was friendly and attentive. We’ll definitely be back to try more dishes and have a good night!
My go-to spot in the neighborhood. I’ve never had a bad bite from here. Each dish is flavorful and unique, plus kitchen service is incredibly fast. I’ve tried everything on the menu but our must haves are the whipped feta, Brussels sprouts, and fries. Fave cocktails are the screaming parrot and dirty martini. The ambience and decor is great.
I absolutely loved everything about this place! It was my first time here the other night and it did not disappoint! The food and drinks are really good, prices are a little steep but it is very tasty! I had the asparagus and it was plated beautifully! It was delicious and had some complex combination of flavors that worked very well together. It is a beautiful little bar restaurant! It was a little on the loud side, there was a live DJ as well. There is inside booth seating and very cute French style balcony seating as well. It was a perfect night to be outside, everything about it was amazing. It is a perfect place for a date night! Parking was fairly easy to find as well.
Came here around 4pm, it wasn't as busy as I hear this restaurant typically needs a reservation. The atmosphere was moody, hip, and the gold accents really brings the place alive. The interior design and layout is stunning. I would say the food is like a Mediterranean Asian fusion with the usage of dips & oils. The salmon crudo is fresh and sweet, the sea bass comes out hot, so make sure you blow a bit before taking a bite, and the whipped feta is absolutely divine with the fluffy pita bread to pair it with.
This is a solid highland park spot for a nice dinner out and I highly recommend it. There’s an old school vibe and the food is phenomenal. We started off with the whipped feta and it was delicious along with the perfectly baked bread. The fries were awesome and the sauce was great. Their drink selection is plentiful to match with your meals. The mushroom skewer was really delicious along with the salmon crudo. The sweet potato dish was excellent along with the Brussels sprouts. The chicken schnitzel was great and cooked perfectly along with the chicken skewer. The branzino was phenomenal and probably my favorite dish. Overall the dining experience was excellent with awesome customer service too. I’d definitely come back again and try their other menu items. Parking is limited to the street and it’s right near the train station.
Went to celebrate husbands dinner! We got a bunch of small plates and the whipped feta was insanely good. Both of our cocktails were also great. Also loved the sweet potato and chicken skewer. They also brought us a cake, with a candle which was so nice (we did pay for it, I asked about it on resy but didn’t follow up so didn’t know if it was gonna happen or not so it was a pleasant surprise) Great ambiance, attentive service, we’ll be back!
Cool Mediterranean second-level spot with low-lit vibes on the inside and airy terrace seating overlooking Figueroa. I’ve come twice to try many things and really just about every dish was a winner – from the bourekas and whipped feta to the swordfish skewer and incredible black cod. Service is generally friendly, but the food outshines just about everything.
One of the meals I’ve had. The whipped feta was a dream with maybe my favorite pita I’ve tasted. Carrots were perfect. Sweet potatoes were delicious but definitely have a kick if you’re sensitive to spice. Steak frites were best fries I’ve ever had. Drinks were strong and so tasty. Can’t wait to go back
Decent cocktails but vibe is definitely awesome. A hidden gem with great balcony seating.
What am amazing space. The picture here does not do it justice. The menu is creative and everything was delicious. The drinks are primary Gin and Whiskey based and were strong. Definitely not for the weak at heart. I appreciated all the attention to detail. It's probably one of the most beautiful places to dine in LA.
I recently coordinated a wedding at Checker Hall and it exceeded expectations. Service, food, drinks, staff, GM, ambiance, level of service and how much they all cared was everything and more! Everyone raved about the whole experience. Next time I’ll go in as a guest and enjoy some drinks and a fun night out. 10/10

Absolutely a must! From the moment we arrived to the very end everything lined up! We felt so welcomed, everyone was friendly, and the food is delicious! 30 something years ago I had my 15añera at this location, it was a banquet hall. Now more than 3 decades later I'm celebrating my birthday but now it's this really adorable restaurant! It felt so cozy and with so much holiday vibe. The memories that came back as we sat on the beautiful balcony eating such wonderful yummy food and the best service by Gabe was definitely a reason to return!!
I honestly can’t believe this place isn’t on the Michelin bib gourmand! One of the BEST restraints I’ve been to in LA. I just keep coming back, I’ve ordered nearly everything on the menu and I’ve never been disappointed here. Such an amazing hidden gem. My mouth is watering just thinking about the hummus 🤤. Also their pork belly dish will literally melt in your mouth. This place is amazing and I will keep coming back!
Server Gabe was excellent, probably the best waiter we’ve ever had, showed told us all about the menu and then which items in each sections were the best tasting listed 3 for each. We trusted him and it was absolutely delicious, we decided to try something different for dessert but also one that he had recommended and the one he chose was far superior. Will never doubt him. Great place. Highly recommend!

Immaculate vibes!! Great staff and good food! Enjoyed the lamb burger, little Jem Salad, and mushroom skewers rocked! Amazing cocktails! Hostess was so kind and accommodating!! awesome!!!

I've been here for dinner twice now, both times right before seeing a show at The Lodge Room. The food and drinks are spectacular. Off the top of my head, I've had the babaganoush, the tomato toast, the roasted carrots, the cauliflower, the saffron rice, the Turkish chicken, and maybe the salmon (or was it the steak? It's been a while), the pineapple rum cake (beware of the flaming part!) and the chocolate cake. The only thing that wasn't AMAZING was the pineapple rum cake, and it was still good. Gauge has been my server both times (first with a gal pal, then with my husband) and he's been so great. The restaurant itself is gorgeous art deco with dark woods, rich velvets, and deeply saturated wallpapers with hints of brass here and there. It's stunning and if we didn't live over an hour away, this would be our go-to date night spot. It reminds me of the couple of speak-easy spots we have been too.
Discovered this restaurant while seeing a band at the Lodge Room in Highland Park. Wondering around the lodge room I noticed a hidden room and was delightfully surprised to find a lovely restaurant with an amazing balcony overlooking the city. This place is very charming, perfect for a date night or a girls night out. The hummus was incredible and observing other side dishes everything looked good. I could go back and just order sides. I had the cod which was good, a tad salty but still good. My friend had the chicken and we both left happy and satisfied. The bar area is elegant, loved the music and the staff were excellent. Would definitely recommend this place and would definitely go here again.

The good: I will say that on the menu, the flavors look inventive and fun. The food is also presented very nicely. The service is lovely and kind. There is a lot of comfortable booth seating. The bad: The food tasted awful. We got the Brussels sprouts, and it looked great with the blots of aji verde and romesco on top but that was about it. The sprouts were in a puddle of extremely salty *almost* soy-sauce-tasting liquid (not mentioned on the menu). We also got the salmon skewer. Again, presented very well with vibrant colors. But it tasted SO FISHY that it was offensive. Not sure if it wasn't cooked fully/properly or if it had to do with the freshness, but it was PUNGENT. There's a music venue sharing a wall with Checker Hall, so the music in the restaurant is extremely loud to combat the noise next door.
