Opinions de Dan Sung Sa Los Angeles
incredible experience, was super fun and attentive, ate a LOT and for a great price, highly recommend all skewers. the place is also beautiful, has this alternative vibe with all the walls scribbled up and the banners hanging from everywhere. went on a monday night (holiday) and there was a 25/30 minute wait, which was totally worth it
Total vibe and great value ! Got a bunch of different things to share for the table - a bunch of skewers, kimchi pancakes, soups, short ribs etc. awesome place to go on an evening out with friends without breaking the bank. Low key vibes love
I love this place, it has amazing vibes and the food is great. We always have such a good time here. Best frog legs in L.A!
We celebrated my partner’s birthday here and most of the food was incredible - I would suggest ordering corn cheese and a lot of skewers but maybe keep away from the plate plates. The steamed squid plate was hard to eat. The squid was very chewy and the server said that this is what it’s supposed to happen which is not the case in my experience. Lychee on ice dessert was great. Most people ordered beer or soju but they did not have a large selection of soft drinks just seemed like Coca-Cola products.
Dan Sung Sa holds a special place for me - it was the first Korean bar I ever went to and one of the first restaurants I explored in LA, and it remains a favorite even after returning. First Impressions & Atmosphere I came here on a date night at 6:45pm while bar hopping - my first night staying in Ktown at a hotel. The moment we walked in, it felt transportive. The space captures the feeling of a local Seoul bar without trying too hard: dim lighting, graffiti-weathered brick walls, and a tucked-away back hallway where we sat, surrounded by antique decor like an old TV in the corner that adds character rather than distraction. Despite the aged aesthetic, everything is clean and well kept. Menu Style & Ordering Strategy The menu is crafted for an exploration of authentic Korean cuisine, standing out from the KBBQs mirroring the Starbucks on every corner in my Seattle years. This is an à la carte, small-plates spot, and it’s one of the best examples I’ve experienced of offering a wide variety without sacrificing quality. We ordered a mix of skewers and shared plates, all of which were well executed and introduced me to real Korean cuisine. The garlic skewers and mushroom skewers were standouts for me. It was also my first time trying ginkgo skewers - not a personal favorite, but I appreciated having the chance to try something less common - my partner loved them though. Everything pairs naturally with soju, even if you’re like and are not a big drinker. I wouldn’t feel awkward skipping on alcohol if with a group of friends or colleagues, which is nice for accommodating a variety of people. Service & Pacing Service strikes the right balance: attentive enough to guide ordering and check in between rounds, but never interruptive. Even when the place is busy, the staff moves efficiently, which speaks to how experienced they are. Who It’s Best For Dan Sung Sa works for a lot of scenarios - date nights, casual hangs, first-time K-town explorers, and seasoned Korean food fans alike. The variety makes it a safe bet for mixed palates. That said, it’s not the place for a quick bite or for anyone looking for one large entrée. Plan to spend 1–2 hours and let the night unfold (you can see some of my other recipes for recommendations for ktown bar-hopping). Final Take It’s popular for a reason, and worth the wait. If you can, I recommend reserving in advance. Even a year later, the combination of food, atmosphere, and those graffiti-worn walls makes this one of the most memorable and enjoyable spots I return to in Koreatown.
Lively, tasty, life-giving dining experience. We had such a great time sitting at the bar, ordering skewers, drinking from our teapot of lemon cocktail. The vibes in this place are very fun—came with one other person but seems great to come with a slightly larger group (say 4-6 to fit in a booth). Especially loved the kimchi pancake, the shrimp skewer, mushroom skewer, and tomato and bacon skewer. Will definitely go back to try more of the extensive menu!
In LA for a last minute trip and wanted to try some Korean food and didn't want the BBQ do it yourself style. This place was absolutely incredible!!! The ambience was very much a dive bar kinda vibe with the food being cooked right in the middle of the restaurant for all to see. I got the Pork Belly plate...the meat was juicy and tender! The lettuce made a nice accompaniment and the portion was big! I also got a couple of skewers...the spicy chicken and the frog legs. I was warned by the waiter that it was going to be very spicy and it made my tongue numb! Lol The frog legs was just to try something different...the texture was more boiled meat and soft than chewy or crunchy. It's a perfect place to hangout with friends and get drunk while eating bae snacks and for cheap! The only downside is the waiting! You've got to give you name and just wait outside to be called. No phone number or reservation system... literally a guy with a clipboard coming out and yelling names. You've got to have a better system for that in this day and age but it was worth the 50min wait!
Seems like a lot of people have a long wait when coming here. We got lucky on a Sunday night around 7p and sat right down with no wait! Some people complain about service … let’s be real, you come for the food and not for top notch service. Service was fine and food came fast! We liked every dish we got … tteokbokki and Kimchi pancake being the top 2. The cod stew was okay. Short ribs were also really good. Fun spot with good food 👍
Went to Dan Sung Sa and it was such a fun experience. The place has that old school Korean street bar vibe that feels authentic and nostalgic. The atmosphere is lively and social and it gets busy in the best way. The food was great and the flaming hot BBQ ribs are a must try packed with flavor and perfect with soju or beer. Service was fast and friendly and everything came out hot and fresh. If you want a true Ktown night spot with great energy good food and drinks this place never disappoints.
Short wait on a Friday night. Friendly staff when getting us seated and with our drink and food. Skewers are the best bang for your buck; filling and delicious and fresh with so much to choose from. Highly recommend the soju cocktail if sharing drinks! Amazing all around, it's a must visit staple of KTown!
So many choices of different meats to try in this small but niche location! Their interior has such a fun vibe to it with constant motion of the servers and food. Portions sizes were small enough that I could try various options. The only downside is that there are no reservations and you have to wait outside for your name to be called.
Visited here for the first time since moving to Koreatown. The food was amazing and full of flavors. The restaurant was packed with people and even more waiting outside once we left. Had a party of 2 at around 7:00pm on a Friday night and we waited maybe 10 minutes. Highly recommend coming here with a small group. Larger groups are hard to seat as the restaurant is small inside. Will definitely be back here.
This place is a hidden gem 💎 in Los Angeles! KTown has great food, BBQ restaurants, entertainment but this small restaurant would not be seen by the ordinary person or popular list because it's easy to miss. It's easy to just drive passed it but if you are exploring (walking) you will definitely smell the delicious food, and that's how I find things 🤤. Looks torn down, not the fancy entrance, not renovated, no newly painted. . .but the kitchen is on point and on fire. Dead and Center you have the grilling, around it you have bar seating overlooking the grilling. A walkway around the bar seating area. Booths that only seat 4 people at most or 2 foodie angelinos. There is also a seating area outside of the building that used to be patios but was closed off with wood planks. These wood planks are covered with graffiti and stickers. . . The shock and uniqueness about this place is this. You are greated with a dark room, dimmed lights, sun shining though cracks from these wood planks. . .small window on far back wall. You are also hit with all the smoke, it's a dark Korean BBQ smoke house 🔥, with red curtains, wood tables and chairs/booths!!! I ordered many, many small plates skewers to share with my kids. Lots of options from $1.99, $2.99 $3.99 yes!!!! Inexpensive and flavorful. . .there are many other plates, like 100 options ranging up to $15.99 per plate. We weren't very hungry but wanted to see the place. The trick is that in order to buy those low cost skewers you have to buy an alcoholic 🍻. What a trick, I want to be tricked 3 times please. . .lol. Enjoy this great place with your loved ones. 🔥. I recommend the spicy 🔥 chicken, mushrooms, and shrimp. I would definitely be back and order some fries, and plates. I saw a quail, and other Kool stuff.
You feel like you’re stepping back in time when you walk in. This is a great no-frills, Korean restaurant where they specialize in skewers. Keep in mind it is a loud and quick atmosphere, so if you’re trying for a romantic date night spot, pick somewhere else. But the vibes here are immaculate and not something that you can easily find in Los Angeles. Very unique experience! The food is awesome, super cheap eats. Easy to walk in if there’s just two of you but also a fun spot to catch up with friends! Love the atmosphere, great for a quick bite to eat, especially late night! Highly recommend the grilled mackerel, the kimchi pancake, and the short ribs.

This place looks a bit dicey from the outside. Inside has a great vibe. Lots of small plates, Our food was outstanding. Especially like the fried dumplings but everything we ordered was great.
The wait for this place can get insane 2+ hours, max I would wait is 1 hour anything over that is a no go. This place isn’t worth that insane wait. Skewers and yogurt soju is the way to go. For 2 people total was $70. It’s a good place no doubt about that but only worth a hour wait max. As you can see from my picture the food is eaten completely and nothing is left over.
This place was soooo freaking cool. The asthetic and the vibe was amazing. The servers were so tentative, the portion sizes are amazing. I think if you bought a bottle of soju you could get some of the dishes for 1.99. I would've given 5 stars but the lady at the front was a little rude. But regardless its still a great spot.
First time here, we heard the wait can be up to and hour or more as they don't take reservations so we got there when they opened. The area is not in a fancy part of LA and the parking lot is small. Its free parking till the restaurant opens then it's cash only valet. Once inside it's pretty dark and sitting is tight. The walls have writing and stickers from past visitors which is interesting so bring something to leave your mark. Menu has a lot of skewers options besides platters. They brought us a small bowl of soup to start with while we selected our food. It was wonderful. We ordered a variety of skewers, some platters and a bottle of raspberry wine and it was all delicious. My favorites were the beef bulgogi, steamed potstickers and cheese corn. I do recommend trying this place if you like Korean food and a fun atmosphere.
Unique place to grab some skewers. Love the layout and style. You have to buy alcohol if you want to order from like half the menu so bring a DD (designated drinker 🤣). Food was good although a little bit pricier than I would prefer. Nothing unreasonable though and overall taste is good.
Really cool spot with delicious food. So many different options and everything that we got was delicious. Everything came out quickly and it was all so fresh. This is a great spot for groups or if you’re just looking for a great spot for some authentic food at a reasonable price. The only downside to this place is that the staff is definitely not the nicest but it’s easy to look past this when the food is so good!
Awesome place. Very Cool ambiance, lots of happy people, and great food! Waiter was nice and helpful in advice on the menu. About an hour wait for walk in at about 8 or 9p. Would recommend!

I visited this restaurant yesterday with two friends. We waited about 20 minutes outside, and even after being seated, we had to wait another 15 minutes before anyone came to our table. We eventually had to call for service ourselves. We were genuinely excited to dine there. Our first server was kind and helpful, he explained the menu and offered good recommendations. However, later a female staff member wearing glasses approached our table repeatedly, and instead of checking in politely, her manner made us feel uncomfortable. When we requested the check, she brought it, but overall the service did not feel attentive. For that reason, we left an 18% tip. She then reviewed the receipt in front of us and asked, “What does it mean, only this amount?” Her tone expressed clear disappointment, which made the situation awkward.
This is my third visit to this charming little restaurant because nothing says pre-Dodger game excitement like food and a plumbing crisis! We got there before doors opened at 4:30 PM (because we’re fans like that), and sure enough, a long line had already formed. You’d think they were giving out gold bars with every meal. Right before they let us in, one of the staff stepped outside and started taking glamour shots of the front parking lot because clearly, water pooling near your front door deserves a spot on the ‘Gram. At first, I didn’t think much of it. But then we got seated and… waited. And waited. You know that feeling when you start wondering if you’ve turned invisible? Yeah, that. A good 20 minutes later, someone finally noticed we existed. Turns out, the staff was huddled over some mysterious puddle inside, treating it like it was a crime scene from CSI: Restaurant Edition. That’s when it all clicked the picture-taking, the awkward mop ballet, the overall vibe of panic. Plumbing problems. Classic. If you’ve been here before, you already know their bathrooms give off haunted house energy pitch black and mildly terrifying. You’re left wondering what else might be lurking in there, and trying really hard not to think about how that connects to the food coming out of the kitchen. Yummy! We ordered the usual, tried to enjoy what we could, but honestly? The whole “impending indoor flood” ambiance kind of killed the vibe. To make it better, the staff crowding around the same spot like it was a live performance only made it feel worse like they wanted us to really soak in the issue. Anyway, we wrapped it up pretty fast and probably won’t be rushing back anytime soon. I mean, we came for dinner, not dinner and a drainage drama.

Be aware: according to information available online, this place was closed about 90 days ago due to a roach infestation. I had heard that Dan Sung Sa is a very famous spot, so I was excited to try it. However, my experience was not good from the moment I sat down. The environment immediately made me uncomfortable. When I went to the bathroom, there were no lights, which was concerning. The bathroom door had black stains, and the overall cleanliness did not feel acceptable. There were also buckets on the floor and dirty dishes sitting near the ground, which did not look sanitary. The water they served me also looked yellow, which made me hesitant to drink it. Overall, I expected much better given how well-known this place is. Unfortunately, the cleanliness and overall conditions did not make for a comfortable dining experience, and I honestly don’t understand how the place is still open.
