Opinions de H Salt Fish and Chips Los Angeles
I've been coming to this H Salt Fish & Chips for years. I love eating fish and chips, and this place gets the job done. I especially go for the Triple Catch meal. This isn't a gourmet restaurant, but a small neighborhood place to satisfy those fish and chip cravings, along with other related seafood. The decor is a little dated, but for some reason I like it. It's simple and reminds me of places I went to as a kid. The food is consistent, and the couple who owns and runs the place gets cooking the instant you order. It's usually not overly busy, but there can be a bit of a line at peak meal times, which they are good at getting through in a timely manner. UPDATE 01/2025: There are new owners and updated decor. They have simplified the menu, but the owner said they will be adding more. The pieces of fish are smaller, but they give more in each meal. I think the new fish was even better than before. They also have a larger selection of fried vegetables.
I stopped in here at around 2pm. I had the one piece of fish with fries meal. My fish was a very good size, the fries were great, and the price was reasonable. The place was very clean. I got great service and the parking was ample. I will definitely return when I'm in the area.
Very good. Google Maps said I had not visited in 4 years. Ouch. Used to visit several times a year. The taste and size of the fish portions are the same, but I also agree there is a bit less fish inside the batter. But what are you going to do. Getting less for more has been a thing since forever. And I've tried other fish and chip places and none can match the taste and crunchy yummy batter. I like salt too but this fish has never had much. I also love the Zucchini and mushrooms battered up and fried. Chips have never been anything special, just frozen crinkle fries. I don't know what "authentic" fish and chips should taste like but H Salt has good food. Need spice? That's what the malt vinegar is for, or my favorite the Tarter sauce. Go ahead and double/triple dip. Good stuff.
I've been going to this Hsalt for at least 30 years. They have alway served good food. They recently changed hands(we all know how that can be), and the new owners are lovely. Food was good. Customer service was wonderful and the recently they did update the restaurant.
The food is so good and u don't have to wait that long
Was craving fish and chips , no disappointment at all! Thank you for a warm hospitality and excellent food 🙏🏻
Love me some Hsalt fish and chips. I love the warm and friendly team. Restaurant is nice and clean with a few tables to eat. Parking is avaliable so convenient for quick Westside eating.
My favorite Chippie this side of the Atlantic. It's a great spot with quality ingredients, staff, and a classic space that just ... It feels lifted straight outta a pub in the West End near Camden Town. I could eat here every day! A definite treat for me and an absolute comfort food ☺️ I highly recommend the hush puppies too - they're fantastic!
You know a place is good when you see people waiting outside a few minutes before it opens! Very clean, no frills spot to get above average fast food with great service. Prices are great and you can get a meal for under $10, which is rare in west LA. The batter is good and crispy and fries are the basic crinkle-cut frozen kind from the bag, which is fine for me. If your looking for the gourmet beer-battered fish and chips like the ones found in a more upscale gastropub that charges $17-23 per plate, this is a couple notches down from that. But the seafood is hand-battered, made to order, and half the price of other places that sell the same or slightly better. They may not put much salt or seasoning on their food like the complaints on other reviews but it's better than oversalting it. If it's not salty enough, just ask for some salt and BAM...PROBLEM SOLVED!
H Salt has been generally very good no matter the location. This location is our favorite and has been our favorite for more than a decade. The fish has always been tender, flaky, and delicious. The shrimp is, also very good. We don't order scallops that often but they have, also been good. This is comfort food at it's best!
A simple fish n chips spot. Menu is limited and pricey, but the fish and shrimp tempura pieces are big. No hint of old oil, and the lady serving/behind the register is friendly. A relaxed atmosphere inside the restaurant.
I’ve been coming to H. Salt Fish & Chips since 2016, and after being away for a while, I recently stopped by and was happy to see it’s under new ownership. The place has been nicely renovated—it feels clean, bright, and refreshed. But what truly made the visit memorable was the staff. They were incredibly warm, friendly, and welcoming in a way that felt personal, like they were genuinely happy to have me there. It made the whole experience feel special. The food is still just as delicious as I remember—perfectly crispy fish, fresh fries, and that same great flavor that’s never changed. Plus, they’re now open until 9 PM with extended hours, which makes it even easier to stop by for a late bite. It’s comforting to see the heart of this place still intact, with a new energy that makes it even better than before.
The nicest people and some truly good fish and chips. Been coming back as often as I can.
Incredible food, extremely good quality and amazingly fresh. New owners have completely revamped this place for better! Well priced and great value.
Always cooked perfectly. Love the small combo. Fish are always excellent here. I think they repainted the interior recently (light blue). The counter is reconfigured as well. London Special is now three pieces of fish (6-8" long) instead of two, and the price went up from $11.40 to $13.99. however, I was very satisfied for that new price.
H Salt served up some tasty fish n chips that are made to order. The atmosphere is low key and comfortable and the staff is friendly and helpful. The food though is the real star here, the fish is fresh, crispy on the outside and soft & delicious on the inside. The popcorn shrimp is also one of my favorites. Give them a try, you can thank me later!
Delicious and very nice service. No complaints.
The fish and chips here come with two or three pieces of fish, crinkle cut fries, tartar sauce and vinegar. They deep fry their fish fried golden brown and the crinkle cut fries have a good taste to them as well. The tartar sauce is also a nice compliment for the fish. (Vinegar and hot sauce are also available.) This location of H.Salt represents their name and brand very well. Many of the locals know about this restaurant too as they been in business and have served the community for many, many years. If you're on the Westisde of LA, W Hollywood, Santa Monica, Venice Beach or other nearby location then head to H.Salt to satisfy all of your fish and chip, comfort-food desires. The management here has great service, the staff is very friendly, the food is very good, the restaurant is alwas clean and you will not pay a lot of money for quality food. It is worth mentioning that they only use healthy oil to fry their fish as well. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who is hungry for some great fish.
A family favorite for decades! I've been to many H. Salt Fish locations throughout California and this one on Santa Monica Blvd. is The Best!! They make their fish so perfectly crisp and delicious everytime!

This was a childhood favorite that haven't eaten at in many years. I was not disappointed. The large portions of fish were crispy and flaky and the fries were crisp. I was there during the lunch rush and service was quick and friendly.
I have been going to age salt since the 80s when I was a child. I am so happy to see that they are alive and well. The fish is always top-notch and the hush puppies and zucchini are not to be missed! The restaurant is spotless and the service is friendly! Keep it up...
Great place for quick fish & chips, great price and service
This place is great! I drive from DTLA for their fish and chips. The fish i fresh and fried perfectly. The shrimp is also delicious. The lady in the front is very helpful and so nice! I definitely recommend the place.
I live out of town, but when I visit SM I try to eat at this Location. The food is delicious for what it is. The fish and shrimp combos and selection are great and easy to choose. The service is great they even clean up after you when youre done.
Bloody good fish n chips at a fantastic price. Easy parking and great feed. Highly recommended 👌
Very delicious and so many few of these places left. We came from Norwalk and were not disappointed.
Every fried item we tried was tasty, hot and crispy (hush puppies, fish, onion rings, and zucchini). Don't forget to sprinkle salt! The owner is the sweetest lady. It's a good no-frills local spot.

Very good UK style fish and chips (though fires are now crinkle cut though). Shrimp and veggies fried also. Good quality fish and shrimp used. A combo plate is enough for most two people diners. No restroom. Credit cards ok.
New owner. The menu is changed a little. The sea food is still good. The interior was repainted. My wife and I shared a combo 4 fish, 3 shrimp and chips.
I really want to give this place 5 stars especially in homage that they are one of the last remaining fish n' chips. The location is great, the parking is annoying. Takes a while to get your food but they overcharge for every condiment. Sometimes it's ok to give away, that is how you have repeating customers and a way of showing you appreciate their repeating business.
Place appears to be under new management by a Korean couple. Food is surprisingly tasty and relatively affordable (Mini Shrimps). My best advice is that they need to hire a Korean American cashier as the couple appear a bit lost with the customer interactions. This would definitely bridge the gap I saw during my interaction. Edit: After writing this I realized my fish order was incorrect, I received what I believe to be Pollock instead of Catfish. The fish was also severely battered so it almost felt like the batter to fish ratio was 70/30.
The fish and chips here are tasty, and the price is very reasonable for the amount you get. Very good value overall!

Everything was juat warm, NOT hot like its always been. Fish and hush puppies were overcooked a bit. Tartar sauce was weak/runny and had no flavor. The malt vinegar seemed watered down. Clams were just bits and pieces, mostly crust. Shrimp was just ok. Mushrooms were the best size I've ever had there even tho they weren't hot. Overall a very Mediocre meal. After spending $85, probably won't go back anytime soon. NOTE: Previous owner retired. New owner hostess very sweet. We realize times are tough nowadays for restaurant. First meal in the last 30+ years we've gone here and been disappointed.
I feel kind of bad writing this review. I had very high hopes for this restaurant seeing the amount of people that were inside waiting. I have also had "hood" fish n chips as I like to call these types of establishments as they make some very good fish n chips; this is what I was expecting when I walked into this restaurant. I ordered the Triple Catch; which came with 1 piece of fish, two pieces of shrimp, 3 pieces of scallops with crinkle cut fries. Unfortunately, for this restaurant, the meal had no seasoning whatsoever. The fries had no salt or pepper, the batter was tasteless, and the fish, shrimp, and scallops had no seasoning at all. The scallops were rubbery; the fish fell apart as soon as I bit into it; the shrimp was decent because its hard to mess up fried shrimp. I had to dunk everything in the tartar sauce for it to have some form of taste because by itself it tasted like nothing. My respect to the lady behind the register who tries her best to understand what you are trying to say. Her and the guy who cooks look like they are working very hard with what they are doing and this is in no means a disrespect to them but the food was not good. It was cheap, about $9 for the meal which is a decent price for the area. Just make sure you speak clearly and try your best to listen to what the lady is trying to say as well because she accidentally charged me for a coleslaw but, once I told her I didn't ask for coleslaw she refunded me the amount of the coleslaw. It was a small mistake which I can see happen due to the language barrier. Overall, I hope that the owners use seasoning because the food can be so much better than what it is. The batter was very light and crispy so if it had a decent amount of seasoning on the fish or the batter it would be very good and I would definitely come back to try it again if these changes are made. The workers look very nice and friendly as well and they seem to have loyal customers as the lady working behind the counter recognized some of the people who I assume are regulars. It's called H. Salt but they don't even add any seasoning to their food. Disappointed.
I had a 2x pieces f&c, pieces are small and the price with tax is &12.50, parking is free but, NO BATHROOM , NO TOILET, NO A/C,and they don’t walk out only three steps to put the food in the table. He said the fish is WHITE FISH which I think he meant the color NOT the type.
I was not a fan of H Salt's Fish & Chips. Having been to London this summer and having authentic Fish & Chips, this one does not hold up at all. It was very greasy without any depth of taste. The fish was ok in the moment because I was extremely hungry, but I kind of hated myself afterwards. Again, I had the real thing not too long ago so it was not fair for me to even try to compare the two. I guess it would be fine for anyone who has never had the real thing.

I loved the food here for years, but the new owners have completely messed up the food. The fish used to be perfect, and I got 4 pieces that seemed to have something that was not soft under the coating. The people were very nice, but the food is no longer to be recommended. If the owners are reading this, they need to reconsider the fish they are using or the cooking method because you seem like nice people but you won't make it with this food.

I really don't like them. Each time I go, it reaffirms that I don't really like it. My client thinks it's good. But I don't taste any flavor. Their tartar sauce is watery, so it doesn't go well with any of the seafood.
The new owners don't seem to be doing a good job. I got F&C to go and the fish and chips seemed to be cooked in very old oil, it tasted disgusting, had to throw it out. Cooking oil needs to be changed regularly!!
Nostalgia brought me back to this business (not this particular location), in town from Atlanta, for a funeral. But, I had not had this food since I moved from California almost 50 years ago. The food was "too expensive" and tasted "basic". Poor atmosphere, poorly cleaned store. Poor service "just give me money and go" and I will not ever go back to any of these locations.
Nasty food and customers service. The fish was so hard like they kept frying the fish from two days ago, I couldn't even bite it. Like trying to eat rocks. No season at all. I try giving them the benefit of the doubt and go again. Always the same. I think they save yesterdays fish for black people only because I know that all those people that is always there is getting the same type of fish I receive almost every time I go there. Will not patronize this business at all again...
Have been going here for years, went today 1st time since covid and it is horrible. Ordered 6 jumbo shrimp, got baby shrimp butterflied dunked in a ton of batter!. The fish are cut in half with a mound of batter on it . What a waist of money , must be new management i did not see the same two people who were there for years.0 If your hungry don't eat here the food has literally no flavor anymore. 😥
literally one of the worst fish and chips spots I have ever been to. They put literally 0 seasoning in any of the food.. those big shrimps you see pictures of are ALL fried batter! They put literally no shrimp inside of it. Its all grease and nasty as hell. Do not waste your money on this place.
If I could give HSalt less than 1 star I would. Let me start here: Fish is Greasy with tiny pieces of fish fried in a heap of Tempura to make portions appear bigger. People running the place barely speak English which makes ordering difficult. No flavor to the food whatsoever and prices are enormous. $17.95 for a 3 piece and chips as opposed to the H.Salt in San Bernadino on Highland Ave the price of a 3 piece and chips is $11.95 plus the food tastes 100% better and it has flavor. Parking at this location is bad and hard to find. I will never go back. It's Trash and a RIP Off. They won't be in business long.
Not the same H Salt . Different owners that’s why they sell sushi. Fish is cooked perfectly, not soggy, nice and crispy but no flavor!! Tartar sauce isn’t good either. Sad. Honey Kettle is worth it
