Opinions de Seongbukdong Los Angeles
The place serves the most authentic korean food with homecook style. It was very empty and I was so suprise, its not fancy and fun like other places. The place is run and cooked by an old korean lady, she made everything from scratch including the banchan, which to me is delicious and original. we had the braised beef ribs, grilled fish, and tofu soup. All were so good. The owner was kind and warm, she did not speak english. So sad to see this place empty. My family enjoyed very much, we took a picture with the owner. She was so sweet and proud of her cooking
One of the best Korean cuisine and traditional restaurants in Koreatown. Highly recommend for Galbijjim(beef stew) and Gimchijjim.
I used to come here often when I lived nearby and hadn’t been back in quite some time, but I’m glad to say the food still tastes just as good as I remembered. The food is consistent and they’re very generous with the banchan, which is always appreciated. I particularly enjoy the galbi jim, which is rich, comforting, and one of the reasons I keep coming back. The people here are friendly and welcoming, which makes the experience even better. Parking can be a bit difficult, especially during peak hours, so that’s something to plan for. It’s not the cheapest option, but for the quality of the food and overall experience, I think it’s worth it and I’m always happy to visit whenever I’m in the area.
The restaurant is very clean, and all the dishes are neatly prepared and delicious. Their specialty is the braised short ribs, which they’re especially known for. I went on a weekday for their brunch, and parking was easy with plenty of open spots. The restaurant also wasn’t crowded, which made the experience even better. There’s another restaurant in the same mall called Dan Sung Sa, and I know it gets extremely busy on weekends. Because of that, visiting during peak times can be a bit stressful and inconvenient. But for this place, a weekday visit was perfect—good food, clean space, and no parking hassle.
No frills delicious Korean food. We got the tofu soup SO TASTY 😋 sooo flavorful, the kimchi stew - the kimchi was SO tender. Can’t wait to come back it hit the spot and felt like eating at your aunties.
This place is great. Incredibly sweet and friendly staff, a wonderful menu of classic dishes, and great service. We were feeling basic and we enjoyed a fabulous banchan spread plus an excellent, crisp seafood pancake and a hearty bibimbap. Everything was delicious and the warm, friendly service made it even better. Will definitely come again on our next trip to LA!
Best Korean restaurant, period. They have a fantastic selection of iconic Korean dishes, such as kalbi-jjim, mackerel-jorim, kuk-bab, and tofu-jjigae. Hence, grilled fish selection is also highly recommended, as they use super fresh fish. Kimchi is a barometer of goodness of Korean restaurant. The house Kimchi is best in town. The staffs are super friendly. Valet parking is available.
Wonderful!! The flavors in the food, every dish we ordered was excellent! All the side dishes were amazing! This is a must if you want authentic Korean food. The soft tofu soup (Sundubu Jjigae) was the best dish. But not far behind was the wonderful flavors of the LA Galbi and the simmered mackerel.
🇰🇷 SOUTH KOREA (via Eat the World Los Angeles) - Look towards the tops of each column for what could be defined as the quintessential dishes at the restaurant, and near the end in the fish section you will find the godeungeo jorim 고등어조림 ($29.99) at the top. This is the dish that brings back Hairtail Alley despite using a different fish, or favorites like Honam Sikdang in Seoul, which offer nothing but godeungeo jorim, long-simmered or braised mackerel with kimchi and white radish.
Nice and clean place. Their seafood pancake is the best I’ve tried. Soooo crunchy and made with lots of ingredients. Ginseng chicken soup and beef bone soup are delicious too. Complimentary appetizer are so different than other Korean restaurants. The plaza is busy. $4 for Valet parking and it’s the only option.
Great Korean food, we got the LA Galbi and they had a great selection of other typical Korean dishes. IMO, they have my personal favorite selection of banchan, so definitely a nice bonus. Service was good, they're really popular and do a lot of takeout orders, so things may take a bit longer sometimes.
This is my second time visiting here. During my first visit I tried the hot stone bibimbap and it wasn’t anything noteworthy. The parking during the day is a hit and miss. I would say expect to have some change to use a parking meter down the street. The inside of the restaurant is bit cozy with an estimated 20-30 seats so expect a wait if you come during peak times. We had their Seongbukdon Gukbap, Galbi Jjim and Sogogi Sundubu today. We tried to order the Haemul Pajeon, but the waiter advised against ordering it since there was a good number of others that had ordered it ahead of us and it would take more than 30 minutes to be made. We liked the Seongbukdon Gukbap as it reminded us of some home cooking, but with a little bit of spicy kick to it. For me, it reminded me of my mother’s cabbage and Cornish beef soup that she would serve during cold winter days. We mistakenly requested the Sogogi Sundubu to be spicy and had to eventually use the soup of the Gukbap to even out the spicyness of the dish. Both were good. I saw some mixed reviews on the Galbi Jjim and we decided to try it for ourselves to set our own verdict. The meat was tender and sweet while being a slight bit on the salty side. It was fine with rice, but nothing I would eat by itself. For a price tag of $35.99 I would prefer a nice cut of grilled steak simply with salt and pepper. The service was friendly, but inconsistent. The staff didn’t have a logical methodology to serving people. There were two others that ordered before us and they didn’t receive their side dishes till they received their main meals while there were people that ordered and sat down after us that received their appetizers before us. Overall, I’d give the place a 3.5 star. It’s not a place I crave but has decent Korean comfort food.
The braised mackerel, grilled croaker, and braised short ribs were all delicious. Our group chose the braised mackerel as the best. We'll definitely go back again. The staff were friendly, and the warm barley tea was delicious.
Great place for comforting Korean food. We always come for the Galbijjim (braised beef short ribs). A whole pot of tender, mouthwatering goodness that pairs so well with rice and the panchan. Get em spicy for $2 extra - it is worth it! Their Galbi Tang (short rib beef soup) is delicious and warms you right up - clear broth, tender chunks of beef, glass noodles. Ask for extra chopped scallions ♥️ I will be back to try their other stews and soups.
It was recommended by a foodie friend, but maybe we didn’t order the right food, we were very disappointed at both dishes. The braised tender short ribs were supposed to be their signature dish, but the flavor was mainly from soy sauce, it was salty and lack of flavors. The stir fried baby octopus also had too much sauce. Also there was too little octopus. Both dishes were salty and lack of complexity in flavor. It very expensive especially considering the quality. The only positive is the valet parking is only $5.
I visit this place often, but what happened to me today left a bad taste in my mouth. The food was good, but the service was terrible. The lady serving the place demanded a tip of $10 or more and also asked me to leave the place as soon as possible. I perceived the staff as racist toward me since I'm not Korean and don't speak Korean. I've always been very kind to the women who serve here, but they often engage in xenophobic behavior. If you're visiting, be careful.
This place was one of best korean jib bab style restaurants. Maybe new owner took over. It was horrible. I ordered jogi with doenjang soup, Nakji and Dolsot bibimbab. Today's experience is the worst of this years restaurant journey. Don't go. When I saw 2 - 3 tables filled at lunch hour, I should have left. They have reason for empty tables at 12:30.
