I went here for my birthday dinner and couldn’t recommend this place enough! so much care was put into every detail of this restaurant. the menu even lists health benefits of main ingredients. i am vegan and gluten free and couldn’t believe a gluten free vegan japanese restaurant existed! the staff were all so welcoming and kind and helpful, they made our experience unforgettable. they even brought out a surprise birthday candle and cookie for me and my friend (who had a birthday the day before mine) I will absolutely be back any time i visit LA! we tried and shared many menu items, i think a favorite of mine was the dynamite roll and the lions mane karaage. we had strawberry shortcake and apple cinnamon cake for dessert which were also fantastic! i ate so much food but felt amazing still! thank you thank you thank you! what a perfect way to spend a birthday

I am not from LA but have family here that o usually visit once a year for my grandfathers birthday. I have celiac so need to eat gluten free. We discovered this restaurant a few years ago and now have gone back every year. The staff here remember us every year and are so kind and wonderful. They always bring out a dessert with candle and sing happy birthday to my grandfather. The food is delicious and 100% gluten free and vegan. We love this place!

Shojin is incredible! The space is really beautiful, with very intimate 2-seater tables in the back room perfect for a date night or special night out. Service was amazing, complete with hand towels before the first appetizer and great descriptions/explanations of every dish as they’re being brought out. The food is thoughtful and everything is vegan and gluten free and made in house. They also don’t use normal sugar. We tried the shojin green gyoza, lion’s mane karaage, Shoj-in-n-out hand roll, purple treasure 5.0, and the harvest curry ramen. Everything was delicious. The ramen was a great portion size. We got share plates and split it. The hand roll was a cool experience because it comes unrolled and you roll it yourself. The purple treasure 5.0 is an eggplant roll and the eggplant pieces on top were intense, way bigger than I was expecting and so juicy. Also a lot of the rolls have “torched at the table” written next to them on the menu. When they bring them to the table they fire it right in front of you and it’s really cool to see. We tried the dessert that comes with miso cookies, black sesame ice cream, and matcha chocolate truffles- this combo of flavors was excellent and surprising. I had never tried miso cookies before and they were so good. For drinks we tried the golden hour mind, which is a functional zero proof cocktail, and the orange yuzunade, which was my favorite and is like an orange juice mixed with lemonade and yuzu. I don’t drink alcohol so it was exciting to see so many thoughtful non-alcoholic drinks on the menu. It was a little pricey, but the food was amazing and the vibes were so nice and the service was fantastic, plus you can really tell the menu is crafted very intentionally. I’d say it is worth the price and then some. I’d love to come back and try an omakase sometime, and if I lived in the area I’d come around every season to try the seasonal items.

This place can be a solid option for good vegan dining out. All the items on the menu are very creative and delicious. Totally enjoyable for non-vegan people too. Loved their concept of a healthy clean meal with good ingredients. Portion sizes are a bit small but lots of appetizers that order and share for the table. Will definitely revisit again!

Vegan Japanese restaurant. All their items are vegan friendly. They offer tasting options omakase which is perfect to enjoy a little bit of everything. Their crispy rice sushi is a must try. Definitely coming back to try other items and for the black sesame ice cream

My wife and I first visited this restaurant seven years ago, and we decided to return because we had such a memorable experience. This time, we tried the Shojin November tasting menu (a 10-course offering), and it did not disappoint. The menu was incredibly creative, featuring a delightful variety of dishes and flavors. Two standout dishes for us were the button mushroom and the tempura banana with chocolate mousse—both absolutely blew our minds! The service was warm and attentive, and the staff went the extra mile by taking a photo for us and even arranging a small birthday celebration. Overall, this is a wonderful, upscale restaurant that’s perfect for special occasions. We highly recommend stopping by if you’re looking for a place to celebrate or enjoy an exceptional dining experience.

Great experience and exceptional service! This place is a wonderful little hidden gem. We tried the lunch tasting menu and it was so worth it. The server made the experience wonderful and described everything that was being served. The timing for each pairing was perfect. The food was authentic and flavorful. My only regret is not saving enough room for dessert, next time!

Amazing! It was my first time dining here and came after being recommended from a few people. Service was perfect. We got the omakase and everything was so well thought out and delicious. The timing of every course was perfect and well presented. It felt like a fine dining experience, but with more warmth. Not stuffy or uncomfortable in any way. I appreciate that they even went above expectations for my friends birthday that we were celebrating.

not vegan but went here on recommendation. cool back patio and very friendly service. the tasting menu changes every month, and is 10 small bite courses with the entire thing taking about 2 hours for about $70 ea. we had a lot of fun trying the vegan versions of different bites... some were better than others but all interesting. would return to try next month's menu. drinks were also good and had non-alcoholic and tea-based options as well. Update October 24: we came back here for the tasting again. The food was as fun and creative as ever and the selection of drinks was standout. Must try the house made “charcoal Coca Cola”

The most delicious and intimate dinner. The food was exceptional. We ordered from the Valentine’s Day fixed menu. The service was amazing and we were treated like the only guests in the restaurant. I will say that this was the most expensive meal of my life, but also one of the best.

What an unbelievable restaurant!! As a vegan who’s also gluten free, it’s really hard to eat anywhere when I travel. We were in town celebrating our honeymoon and we stopped here for dinner and EVERYTHING was delicious. We ordered a few dishes to try as much as we could: Dragon Roll, Green Forest roll, Pirates of the captain crunch, and the Ramen were all delicious. The service was the most attentive I have ever experienced. They even brought out a complimentary sweet bite once we shared our recent nuptials. I would eat here again without a doubt. Ambiance is relaxing, staff is expedient, and the chef is the most talented.

Absolutely incredible. I used to go to the downtown location, and this one is just as excellent. I am so glad this place exists; everyone vegan or otherwise should go here at least once.

We did the Chef’s Omakase at Shojin and it was such a memorable dining experience. Every course felt carefully crafted and beautifully presented. The Truffle Maitake Miso Soup was rich and comforting. The Maple Glazed Brussels Sprouts and Stuffed Shiitake Mushrooms were flavorful and perfectly balanced. The Spicy “Tuna” on Crispy Rice and the Baked “Crab Cake” Hand Roll really stood out. The sushi plate, especially the Truffle California Roll and Dynamite Roll, showed how creative and refined plant based cuisine can be. I also ordered two zero proof cocktails and added NAD to both. The Golden Hour Mind and Smokey Cherry Margarita were refreshing and well balanced. I love that they offer functional additions like NAD. It made the night feel unique and wellness focused. The ambiance is serene and intimate, and the service was attentive and informative. Shojin delivers an elevated omakase experience that feels thoughtful from start to finish. Highly recommend.

I recently visited Shojin again and ordered the Revolution Ramen 2.0 along with the Lion’s Mane Crisps and overall it was an enjoyable experience. The Lion’s Mane mushroom dish crispy, flavorful. The Revolution Ramen 2.0 was comforting and well-balanced, though the Lion’s Mane definitely stole the spotlight this time. Shojin has a cozy, intimate atmosphere that makes it a great spot for a relaxed meal. The service was warm and attentive, which really adds to the overall dining experience. If you’re looking for high-quality vegan Japanese cuisine this is the place then. I will come back for the sushi and appetizers.

Food was pretty hit or miss, but had good ideas. The fried mushroom appetizer was by far the star of the show from what we ordered. I highly recommend it! The drink I ordered was super underwhelming and I asked for it to be replaced. I got charged for both drinks but was not told at the time that I sent the first drink back that that would be the case. When I asked about this while paying, the server would/could not remove the charge.

We have dined at Shojin for many years and have always supported this restaurant, always said our Thank Yous, and always tipped well. But today, the service was absolutely ABHORRENT. And that’s an understatement - I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone who expects to be treated with dignity. First, we were told to wait in the cold for 15 mins for a table while many tables were empty in the restaurant (and we witnessed 4 additional tables empty out while we were waiting still). The hostess said the kitchen was too busy so we asked the hostess if we could maybe grab one of the open tables and just start off with something to drink and can order food later. She said no and that we had to wait outside. The hostess was extremely entitled and rude, behaving as if it were a burden to seat us. At one point she came to our table and had the audacity to falsely accuse us of dropping a napkin outside the restaurant. I don’t really understand what gave her the authority to do that. Does she go around asking customers who dropped cutlery or napkins to pick those up? We saw the staff clean up after customers and pick things off the ground so why didn’t they run after those customers ambushing them and demanding that they pick those up? When we told her we didn’t, she just kept pushing relentlessly. I have NEVER experienced such shocking behavior in any restaurant in LA. What kind of an unacceptable behavior is this by the staff? This was one of the few restaurants we actively supported post pandemic and we tried to eat and get take out even during days when there were no tables filled. We brought family here, recommended this place to several of our friends but no more. To be treated in such a derogatory manner is unacceptable. During the same visit we also noticed that some of the other tables got a complimentary green tea but we were never offered that - I wonder why that is? Does the staff really think customers won’t notice such blatant differential treatment? The owners should take note that certain customers are being treated differently at this establishment.
