Sashimi Luch for $26 premium quality sashimi, Bluefin tuna toro and Hon Hamachi
Arrived at 10:30am, seated by 11:15am. Quick and amazing service.
This sushi place is the best in town. Raw tuna has an absolutely superb taste. It’s of great quality and has a high turnover rate, ensuring that you can always enjoy fresh sushi. However, one unfortunate aspect is that we don’t take reservations, which means we have to wait for at least 20 minutes.
I had lunch at Sushi Gen, a place where you usually have to wait an hour to an hour and a half. Lately, though, it feels like the waiting time has been getting shorter. Most popular Japanese or BBQ restaurants take one weekday off, and this place is closed on Mondays. Today is Tuesday, so I lined up 30 minutes before opening and ended up being #2 in line. In the past, I would’ve had to arrive at least an hour early to be one of the first two. As always, the quality hasn’t changed at all, and I finished my lunch lightly with just one-third of a bowl of rice.
If you’re looking for authentic sushi in Los Angeles, Sushi Gen should be at the top of your list. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly takes pride in what they serve. We ordered the sashimi deluxe, and it was easily one of the freshest and best-quality sashimi platters I’ve had anywhere in LA. The fish was perfectly cut, flavorful, and incredibly fresh. Service was smooth and well-paced, and the overall experience felt very authentic.
Jaw dropping food here! I have eaten a few times, most recently 3 months ago (just catching up on my reviews now). The fish is of incredible quality. The price is reasonable - you can get a full lunch meal for 25-35$. I've never had better nigiri. Be prepared for a line up - get there before they open! And there is a minimum order (I think 25$) if you want to dine here.
Great quality. Premium sushi for each person is great. House hot sake also surprisingly decent. Lives up to the hype! I recommend coming at least 30 minutes before 4:00 PM on Saturday for dinner.
Sushi Gen is my absolute favorite Japanese sushi restaurant. If you’re craving sashimi or sushi, this is the place to visit — you’ll enjoy some of the freshest and most satisfying quality fish around. This place is always crowded. Lunch, dinner, weekdays, weekends — there’s almost always a line. If you want to avoid waiting, try coming around 5 PM for dinner. That’s usually the best time to get in without a long wait. Especially on weekends, the line gets even longer, so plan accordingly. But overall, the quality is absolutely worth it. Highly recommended.
Excellent food and service! All of the food was very fresh, with a number of not so common options. I was impressed with the size of the fish and rice on the nigiri. The fish was fairly large and the rice was smaller than many restaurants. Favorites were salmon belly and yellowtail belly. The staff was nice enough to help me with getting a copy of my receipt several days after my visit. Much appreciated and highly recommend Sushi Gen.
I stopped by during lunch and had the best sushi experience ever! They offer a variety of sushi combinations for lunch, and the service is quick despite the long wait in line. I ordered the Sashimi Deluxe, which was generous (enough for two people, perhaps?). The Special Giant Clams were also a highlight - fresh and juicy!
Came here again for my Birthday celebration and it did not disappoint. It’s worth the waiting time. Sat at the bar section and even got served by one of my favorites chefs. Each piece was handcrafted to person. The right amount of flavor sprinkled on each sashimi. Melt in your mouth. Other than your normal cuts of fish, the chef has some off the menus specialties if you are lucky enough to get served. The meal is quite expensive but worth every penny. Special occasion is highly recommended to celebrate here.
Loved the sushi!! A long line but worth the wait. Great value , good variety and worth the 1.5 hour drive. In the middle of a lot of shops to make the wait go busy, just wished I wasn’t hurried away and forced to chug my beer. Staff was not the friendliest, I know they need to turn over tables but dang!! I had only spent 25 minutes from sitting down to eat and being wished away. Even after that still would come back for the quality of food.
We arrived about 30 mins to close (we didn't look up the times 🙃) They still took our name for the waitlist and were seated at close (2pm I think) and still served and allowed to eat - which was very kind! The food came quickly and was very tasty! It gets busy so definitely plan better than we did so you're not leaving it to chance they let you in. 😅
Updated review: All of the nigiri is delicious here. The seafood is so fresh, and I like how there is less rice in each piece of sushi compared to other places. As others said, I would highly recommend sitting at the sushi bar. Although the lunch menu is a pretty good deal, sitting in front of the bar and being able to observe the process is awesome. You can also get inside the restauraunt a lot quicker by queuing for the sushi bar. Recently, I also came here for dinner to celebrate a special occasion with my family. I think waiting for a table is still worth it, even if it can get up to 1hr wait, because some of the really good dishes are unavailable at the sushi bar. For example, the Unaju. We paired it with a Sashimi Deluxe and Premium Sushi. All of the food tasted amazing. Besides that, the service is great. The atmosphere is comfortable, and feels authentic to other restauraunts my family and I have visited in Japan. I will definitely be coming here regularly!
I am not sure how anyone could give this place anything BUT a five star. First I tried sitting at a table first time was good second time at bar BUT if you’re not with a buncha ppl trynna talk you should sit at the bar it’s faster and a lot more fun cool experience where they straight up give you the sashimi and sushi as you order it they cut it right in front of you. Now onto the food…SUPER FRESH tasted AMAZING better than any sushi I’ve ever had in the U.S. it was out of this world it was expensive sure but every dollar was worth it and I’ve never felt that ways about any other food but THIS WAS SO WORTH IT. Highly recommend giving a try to sea urchin, you might not like it I didn’t b it’s a must try and is fresh. Also the other dishes are amazing too toro (fatty tuna) and others all amazingggg I just idk words cannot describe how good it is. I would fly to LA just for this restaurant it’s so good I can’t even imagine how good it would be in Japan itself but this is as close as you’re gonna get to actual Japan for a sushi shop in the states. If you have time STOP BY HERE the sashimi and sushi to die for and service is super great and fun nicest waitors and waitresses and the three guys working the bar are amazingggg (forgot their names tho so sad rip wish k remembered but my memory is bad and it’s been a few weeks haha)

Went for opening a few minutes before 4PM on a Saturday and there was already at least 30 people before me. I still narrowly managed to get in and secure one of the last tables. I ordered the dinner sashimi set with an extra side of very fatty tuna (loved it). The fish quality was good, and more than reasonable for this price point. I can see why folks line up early for this spot. Very friendly staff too.

So I’m coming back from Downey (don’t ask), handling some property stuff, and I call up a friend. He just happens to be nearby, and like true sushi soldiers, we decide to meet at Sushi Gen — because of course, that’s what everyone does when they’re within a 10-mile radius of Little Tokyo and feel like standing around hungry for 45 minutes questioning their life decisions. The wait? Classic. 30–45 minutes, which gives you just enough time to spiral into existential dread while the host gives zero indication you even exist. But finally — we get seated. It was my friend’s first time. He’s a hardcore sushi guy, like the kind who judges you if you say “sushi roll” with too much excitement. We both ordered the hamachi kama (yellowtail collar), sashimi set, and sprinkled in some extra bits of raw sea treasure. Here’s the thing: Sushi Gen is good. The kind of good that makes you nod in polite satisfaction while thinking, “Yeah, okay, I get it.” But in today’s world of sushi arms races and omakase wars, being consistently good is starting to feel like showing up to a Formula 1 race in a Toyota Camry. Reliable, yes. Exciting? Meh. Fish quality? Still solid. Experience? Nostalgic and humble. But if you’ve had a tour through LA’s newer spots, it’s hard not to notice Sushi Gen’s staying kind of… still. I give it a respectful 3.8 stars. My friend? Brutal. A hard 2 and said he’s never going back. Might’ve been the wasabi betrayal. Who knows. But since you made it this far, let me reward you. If you want a spot that blows Sushi Gen out of the miso soup — go to Fisherman’s Table in Huntington Beach. That place is criminally underrated. Like, “why is this not packed every night” levels of good. You’re welcome. Now forget I told you.
