Date night visit with my boyfriend. We're fans of Chef Zarate's previous restaurants, so I was excited to try this new one. We got the: Salmon handroll - the lemongrass aioli was a really nice, subtle touch Papa no rellena - a towering creation with a lovely creamy and crunchy texture yellowtail ceviche tostada - nicely spiced and a great balance of textures scallop aguachile - a beautiful presentation and delicious light composition risotto de mariscos - comforting and surprisingly filling for a seemingly-small dish grilled octopus - a nice balance of textures The space is welcoming with a very relaxed ambiance. Unfortunately, the staff seemed frantic. That was surprising since there weren't many diners early on a Tuesday evening. But our service was smooth and the dishes came out quickly.

We came to the Hummingbird for a Girls’ Night Out, and it was such a great experience. The food was absolutely delicious. I had pasta with cuttlefish and seafood, and it was amazing. The atmosphere really made the night special. It felt relaxed and fun, almost like a bar vibe, but with excellent quality food. The live music added a great touch and made the evening even more enjoyable. I truly loved the food, the ambiance, and the overall experience. Highly recommend!

This is really amazing place!!! I love the kitchen, very unique and interesting style food menu. Everything is delicious and very fresh!! The seafood pasta 🍝 was a little bit spicy, but that exact what I wished!! On Saturday night was a live music vocal. I will come again with my friends, totally recommend 💯

If happiness could be served in a bowl, it would taste exactly like the ceviche at Hummingbird Ceviche House! 🌴🐟 This spot is such a gem — bright, colorful, and totally laid back, but the food is seriously next level. The ceviche is as fresh as it gets — tangy, citrusy, with just the right amount of heat. Every bite feels like a little vacation. We tried a few varieties and couldn’t pick a favorite because they were all amazing. The portions are generous, the plating is beautiful without being fussy, and the staff is super friendly and clearly passionate about what they’re serving. Even the sides — plantains, chips, you name it — are so good you don’t want to share. Hummingbird makes you want to come back the next day and do it all over again. If you love ceviche (or even if you think you don’t), this place is a MUST go!

This place is such a gem. Chef Ricardo is so sweet and really cares about the quality of his food, and his customers. I came for happy hour and will be back! 10/10

I've heard a lot about this place & it doesn't disappoint. It was my first time & it was their first brunch service. It was really focused & disciplined. It was all the refined dining but with a relaxed shoulder. Anything seafood is a knockout & it just feels so balanced. Having tried other ceviche places in LA, this one really stands out. I got to see them prepare other traditional brunch items as well (like steak & eggs tosada, quiona salad) & they also looked phenomenally. Didn't seem like theres a bad thing on the menu to try.

I dined here today and was utterly blown away. It's been ages since a meal has left me so impressed. The chicha morada was the perfect balance of sweet and tart, and the ceviches and hand rolls were simply divine. The house-made soy sauce elevated the hand rolls to a whole new level. But the real star of the show was the shrimp dumpling - it was pure culinary magic, one of the best bites I've had in a long time. Thank you to the friendly staff and talented chef for such an incredible experience. 😘

This is a delightful place, and it’s definitely worth coming here to try the course menu. The dishes are all uniquely composed, yet very fresh in their execution. The five-course menus are delicious, and the desserts are outstanding. I highly recommend it to all my friends and consider it a truly authentic, unusual, and high-level cuisine.

A true gem. Decor and welcome gives local cantina vibes but the food is like a fine dining experience. One of the best restaurants we've been to in the last few years. 10/10 would recommend.

Everything we tried here was delicious! We had a couple ceviches (the tuna with miso leche tigre was a revelation), hand rolls (lemongrass aioli 🤩!!), and the strawberry sorbet. The staff were so nice and attentive and the chef even stopped by to introduce one of the dishes. It was great to learn that the son of Maya’s (the restaurant previously in this space) is the owner and collaborator of the head chef. The Hummingbird is definitely a gem for the neighborhood!

Absolutely incredible! We tried five different dishes, two drinks, and two desserts. Every single dish was 10/10. It was a legitimately enjoyable experience from start to finish and the vibe inside is very cute. Everyone was kind and we can’t wait to go back.

The most delicious experience with food I’ve ever had. Quality and tons of options please order what the chefs recommend.

Chef Ricardo Zarate is a master of creatively combining flavors that sing together...a real taste explosion. We tried two handrolls (crab and salmon), salmon tiradito, yellowtail ceviche, two specials (octopus tostada and calamari & hamachi ceviche). All were delightful. The purple corn tea with chopped apple, pineapple and chia seeds was so refreshing; I'd order this again. Sevice was friendly and helpful, the vibe was great and that playlist was perfect! It all works together beautifully. Thanks for an incredible dining experience. We will be back.

This place is awesome! I think I already had everything on the menu. You need to at least have two hand rolls, a ceviche and one of the entries for a full experience. The Hummingbird has non alcoholic drinks, I tried the chicha morada it was very refreshing. Also, ALWAYS ask for the off menu dishes, you will be delighted. It's a pretty good price for the food, the atmosphere and having renowned Chef Ricardo Zarate cooking for you. I always start with the Salmon, and the scallops hand roll. Then a yellow tail ceviche, papa no rellena and the rib eye steak. They add new dishes to the menu all the time to keep it fresh.

5/5 really, really tasty spot. I already love nikkei cuisine and was sad when causita closed so I was super happy when this spot opened nearby. Even crazier when I found out it’s the same chef! Their yellowtail tostada was chef’s kiss along with the papa no rellena. Also make sure to get their purple corn ice tea. Scallops aguachile, salmon tostada, and their hand rolls were also amazing (even for someone who doesn’t like cucumber like myself haha). Will definitely be coming here again!

Delicious food! I just kept ordering hand roll after hand roll 😋 I recommend the salmon and the scallop hand rolls, those were my group's favorites! Also, all the ceviches come with house made tostadas, which are probably the best I've ever had. You can taste that they are handmade tortillas, and the crunch was great without hurting my teeth lol Also, the risotto is definitely worth trying out, might have been my favorite dish of the night! As for parking, it's silver lake/echo park area, so definitely need to find street parking, although it wasn't too bad, since the restaurant is near residential streets.

Chef Ricardo Zarate is a true artist. I was so impressed by all the new flavors I got to experience. This delicious place is my new hot spot in Echo Park! Try the yellowtail tostada and the dumplings (mind-blowing).

Amazing new spot in LA. Came for date night and easily one of the most memorable dining experiences. The atmosphere was well curated, service was spectacular, and the food was perfect. Wishing nothing but success for this restaurant!

A vibe that is like a backyard family party. Yet, the food is classy and delicious. We should applaud a place that perfectly blends accessibly to a carefully thought out menu, incredibly fresh ingredients and a place to just affordability hang out. Shoutout to them yall we had a blast.

We made a reservation for 9.30pm for 3 ppl and were running late and they were happy to accommodate. Got in and it was instant vibes! We ordered a bunch of salmon & crab rolls, ceviches, tostada, stuffed potato ball and the purple corn tea 😋 I felt like every bite or sip transported me to a tropical lush Peruvian forest (especially with the amazing music they were playing) 🌴 Our server Dayana was delightful, fun, informative & took such great care of us. Parking might be a little tough and there's no alcohol options but it's sooooo worth it & I'll definitely be back many times!

Wow wow wow… I love to eat, I’ve been to many restaurants in LA, all over the spectrum, and I can confidently say that Hummingbird Ceviche House stands out as a gem truly worth visiting. Not only was the food spectacular, but I had the best service I’ve experienced in LA so far First Impressions~ I’ve seen the muted green building nearly everyday on my drive home through Glendale Boulevard. Stepping inside, you’re immediately immersed in the cozy dining area with bumpin’ music, lights, and a disco ball. I was honestly a little worried at first but my nerves were quickly washed away when our server, Dayana, came around. As first timers, she guided us through the menu and spoke about the food in a way that showed genuine love for the dishes and ingredients. Food~ We started off with the salmon hand roll, yellowtail ceviche tostada, and the seabass ceviche. The salmon hand roll came around first. I thought I knew what I expecting, but as soon as I took the first bite and tasted the lemongrass aioli, I knew I was wrong. It was bright, but not overpowering, and I could enjoy the complexities of what I thought was going to be a humble handroll. We went back and ordered another handroll, this time getting the crab. I wish I could talk about the other dishes with flowery language but honestly, I was so overjoyed with each one that I couldn’t even think coherent thoughts about what I was tasting. Despite my blackout, there was one more (humble) stand out — the tostadas themselves. The tostadas must have not been fully corn because they were lighter and airy with a satisfying crunch, like if a corn chip and a rice cracker had a baby. Still, they struck the perfect balance since they were hearty enough to withstand the tigers milk the ceviche was served in as I desperately tried to scoop up every last drop. From the food, to the vibes, to the service, I am in love with Hummingbird. Will definitely be coming back. Thank you for the wonderful evening!

Wow. Really first rate Peruvian ceviche and hand rolls come to a humble stretch of Glendale blvd in Echo Park. A friendly homey atmosphere and real artistry to boot. Delicious.

Absolutely loved this place. The chef focuses on Peruvian Nikkei cuisine and everything I tried was phenomenal. Among my favorites were the blue prawn aguachile and salmon skin salad. I also love that the drink selection was mainly focused on nonalcoholic wine and beers. Make sure to reserve a table on a weekend—it was completely packed on a Saturday at 7:30.

I **loooooove** this place! From the moment you walk in, you can feel the warmth and care that goes into every part of the experience. Every single dish is crafted with so much love—it truly feels like a homemade meal, the kind that brings back memories of family gatherings and comfort food from childhood. What really sets this place apart is the *fusion* of flavors. Each dish is a thoughtful blend of cultures and ingredients that somehow manages to be both creative and familiar at the same time. It’s clear that Ricardo and his incredible team have poured their hearts into curating a menu that is not only unique but consistently delicious. They’ve done an amazing job balancing innovation with authenticity, and the results are outstanding. The fish is always unbelievably fresh—like it was just caught that morning. And the sauces? Don’t even get me started. Every sauce is rich, flavorful, and complements the dish perfectly. You can tell that a lot of thought and testing has gone into every element on the plate. There hasn’t been a single thing I’ve tried that I didn’t absolutely love. Whether it’s a main course, a side, or even a dessert, everything leaves me feeling full, happy, and eager to come back. This place is truly a gem, and I honestly cannot recommend it enough. If you’re looking for food that’s made with passion, creativity, and soul—this is it.

I’ve been wanting to check this local ceviche house out and it didn’t disappoint. They have variety ceviche options in their menu, they all looked so good. Hand rolls were filling and delicious. Give it a try to short ribs in ‘hot dishes’ if you like rich flavored and buttery food. They have pretty good desserts as well. They even had live music on a tuesday! Special thanks to friendly and kind staff. Lovely place!

Ricardo is truly an amazing person with a real passion for food. He took amazing care of me when I sat at the bar and I recommend that everyone go to his restaurant. The food was simply amazing and as an LA local for my entire life, I have not been this impressed by a restaurant in at least ten years. Thank you so much and I plan on coming back here every week!

I went to hummingbird with a friend last night after hearing great things from infatuation and word of mouth. After looking at the menu, we decided to give the $60 pp tasting a try. This turned out to be excellent value. I've spent the same or more in LA for far less food that isn't nearly as high-quality and delicious. We enjoyed handrolls, two ceviches, one of which was topped with the most delicious/flavorful calamari I've ever had; a delicious seafood risotto with perfectly cooked, sweet and delicate shrimp; a perfect medium-rare ribeye, and two dessert dishes. The portions were large, and we were completely full by the end of the meal, taking about half the steak home. The vibes of the restaurant and staff were extremely homey/cozy and I'd happily come back here alone for a solo-date/treat-yourself night because it feels so welcoming. Thanks so much for the excellent meal!

I haven't had such a bold AND delicious meal in a very long time... This is fine dining without the pretentious aspect and typical high price tag. We took the omakase and everything was not just amazing, but also very unique and beautifully crafted. The chef and the kitchen team are truly gifted. Definitely a strong vibe and real personality there so it's not for people who like more standard (generic) dining experience... which can explain some of the negative reviews.

We had a lovely Sunday dinner here. The cozy, home-like atmosphere made the experience special, and the food was both unique and delicious. My favorite dish was the salmon in orange sauce — unforgettable!

I've been growing jaded with the diluted, homogenous Los Angeles food scene. Hummingbird really broke the mold, one of my favorite dining experiences in LA in years. It truly had a POV that started with it's bold, incredible food and flavors with tons of nuance, playfullness, and just flat out delicious. Not only that, but the vibe in there has such a direction. Whenever friends come visit from out of town, I'm taking them to Hummingbird to represent what LA culinary scene is about. This place is wildly under the radar. Bravo.

Great food and service. The ambiance is cool as they left murals and graffiti up and integrated it into the look of the place it seems like. They play really good music, but it can be pretty loud at the table next to the speakers if you’re trying to talk to your group. The food was amazing and everything was very flavorful. The Ragu De Costilla was incredible and I’m still wanting to go back soon for some more. Highly recommend.

A hidden gem Where to start: the food, the service, the atmosphere. This is an elevated dining experience in the least expected place. A culinary experience worth going out of your way for. Would not be surprised if they soon get a Michelin star

It's a beautiful thing when inspired folks turn something humble into magic, elevating us all. It's sad to see some reviews here being very finicky and faulting them for things they can't control. What they they can control they turn into wonderfulness, the quirky vibe and a brilliant menu. Awesome vegan options Purple corn ice tea, tomato hand roll, mushroom ceviche 🌱 Prices are solid for the high quality. Really neat place.

This was my very first time trying Peruvian cuisine, and I was absolutely amazed! Every dish was beautifully presented and incredibly delicious. The flavors were so unique and memorable. The staff was friendly, and the whole experience felt warm and welcoming. I’ll definitely be coming back for more!

Very disappointed? Wanted to go to this place for a while and had high expectations. First, I did a reservation but the table wasn’t ready, food is good but overpriced based on the portion size, and being a real Peruvian food fan, I felt it’s not really peruvian 🥹. What disappointed me the most was that there’s no alcohol at all (wanted a pisco sour so bad) in the menu. The atmosphere is good tho.

3.5 stars. The food was pretty good The atmosphere was on the border between sketchy and cool. We waited for 40 minutes to be seated.

Obviously the place has some great vibes. Super impressive setup inside, some live music which was fun. Loud but not overwhelming. The dishes all look amazing. The food however was big miss for us. Aguachile was fine, but bland. The shrimp ceviche dumplings were inedible. Salty to the point of there must have been an error in prep, completely inedible we sent them back (we’re not comped and server didn’t seem to care we were sending back.) salmon tiradito was interesting; the flavors were unique and glad I tried but for us, the miso/orange/roe combo didn’t work. The tuna/avocado dish was fine, good quality ingredients but flavorless. To mix it up we tried the Japanese curry ravioli. I thought it was too rich/one note but my wife said it was the best dish of the night.

S
Santiago Hernandez

Wife stopped by to get a quick bite to go and we should not have wasted our time. First of all there is no parking so you have to find a place nearby. She ordered the ceviche and got a few tostadas, a few slices of cucumber and a ridiculously small portion of salmon. Are you really charging for this? The guacamole was ok and they give you a large chicharron, but not for the price. You are not in a flashy place, give some quantity and quality.

C
Carla Martinez

The idea of this place sounds so good but that was about it. The service was odd , the place itself feels unfinished I felt like I was walking into bingo night. The food itself is ok but for the price I expect more. It’s not spicy at all but once you look around I could see why they can’t really make it as spicy as your typical ceviche.

E
Eric A

Service was weird, Coachella weekend not busy, stood at the door fr 5 minutes while everyone working avoided eye contact, just felt really awkward. Reserved a table, immediately sat us at the bar. Guacamole in the hand roll threw me off, dishes lacked any exciting flavors and we were served everything we ordered all at once. I think I came in with too high of expectations. Making dishes in batches/not to order was weird I really thought this restaurant was worth the hype. Better ceviche to be had for the price.

M
Matt Rahn

We made a reservation and still waited 50 minutes for the table with the host never really giving us an update. Seemed fairly disorganized. They had someone doing live music for a few songs and she was getting in the way as it's a very small restaurant. Decor and vibe is all over the place. My food was ok but my girlfriend really enjoyed her seafood so your mileage may vary.

A year ago I left a glowing review for the place (you can read the original below), but after another visit I’ve changed my mind. We booked almost a month in advance, and arranged to meet friends who were excited for the experience having heard us talk about our first visit- but when we arrived we were told that the table wasn’t ready and we’d have to wait. Flexibility is no problem, but what was supposed to be 10-15 minutes behind turned into over an hour! There was basically no communication from the manager over the course of the hour we stood outside at a busy intersection just waiting. Up to 20 minutes late for a reservation, I can understand, but almost 1.5hrs before even seating us for a reservation (which we made well in advance) is frankly disrespectful. At least tell us you’re that far behind when we arrive! After the long and frustrating wait, the food experience was much the same. The shrimp dumplings I had liked so much lacked the flavor we expected from the prior visit. It took over 1.5 hours after ordering to get two dishes of ceviche- at a ceviche place! While the ceviche was tasty when it arrived, the growing hanger and upset of the timing issue just left a sour taste. While the manager was pleasant to us and friendly, comping two dishes to make up for the time delays, I just couldn’t shake the lack of upfront transparency which made us feel like an afterthought. I feel like the early excitement and passion for the restaurant is gone- in theory it could have been an ‘everything that could go wrong did’ kinda day for them- but either way I’m not returning. —— Very unique and bold! Almost like an alternate dimension where disco lights, music, and nightclub ambience meet delicious ceviche and seafood dishes. The food is amazing, and it’s a fun contrast to the party casual vibe. Somewhat awkward but endearing BYOB and plastic cups, but it just fits with the wacky and fun. We loved the hand rolls, and there’s a crispy shrimp dumpling with shiso/ perilla leaf around the outside that rocked our world.

Came in with high hopes but was disappointed. Service was friendly however the best thing we had was the cancha (corn nuts) on the table at the beginning. Could be we ordered the wrong things but the jury is still out

M

A mumbling waitress wearing cargo pants and a T-shirt impatiently waited on us. They doubled their prices since opening from 11-15$ a plate to 18-23$ a plate. I ordered the amberjack for 21$ and got 3 pieces of tuna sashimi with a pinch of shredded lettuce drenched in too much sauce. I also ordered the crab roll for 8$ and what showed up was something that I could have eaten in two bites. After having waited far too long for service I gave my card without looking at the check. When the waitress had left I glanced at the bill and realized the waitress had brought me an 80$ check for what should have been around 33$. I was prepared to spend 60-70 dollars as well but thought better of it beforehand. As we left the waitress followed us down the street(which was extremely off-putting and strange)asking us what went wrong and I simply didn't have the heart to tell her as I've cooked and served in kitchens for over 20 years myself. I left hungry and went to the local Vons and made a giant plate of shrimp and tuna ceviche for 15$

A
Asher Rumack

We had a reservation and when we showed up we were told it would be an hour wait. The host said he’d give us an update and forgot about us, I had to track him down and he was finally honest it would be an hour after our reservation time. I mean why even have a reservation system? It was embarrassing that we brought our friends here and we had to figure out a different plan, really soured our night.

L
Linda

Right as you walk in, you ask yourself what is this a bar? It's definitely not a restaurant. I arrive with my friend and this guy bring us they corn snack things. Then we get water in plastic cups and I saw that there was no alcohol on the the menu and I'm in like ok. Then I proceed to look at the menu and nothing catches my attention, so I let my friend order for is and the first thing that arrived were the scallop rolls. I looked at scallop roll and was not excited. We had no soy sauce at our table so I had to get up myself and grab soy sauce from an empty table and the people that worked there saw and still didn't ask if I needed anything. No wasabi, no ginger. Then I bit into the roll and was like what the heck is this? I couldn't couldn't even bite through the seaweed so I just ended up opening up the roll and just eat tiny scallop inside with rice and held up the seaweed in the air and asked my friend "What is this?" Then the yellow tail tostada ceviche came and I grabbed a tostada and put some ceviche and took a bite and was like oh dear, this is so terrible. The fish was not fresh. It was so bad and after that I stopped eating. We ordered a couple other dishes but I didn't not touch them. The total bill was $83.22 for four dishes and a beverage. What a waste of money. I should have bought 50 tacos from Tacos Mexico instead and feed the homeless.

B

The other reviews made this place seem so much better than it actual is. The vibe of the place is extremely confusing, they're charging premium tapas dine-in prices with hole in the wall ambiance. The music was just on the side of being too loud where it's annoying. The parking is non-existent. Water and drinks are served in plastic cups and they served something worse than corn nuts for an appetizer. We ordered two hand rolls, yellowtail ceviche, sea bass ceviche, and a jumbo prawn thing. The nori in the handroll was soft and soggy and hard to bite through. Yellowtail ceviche just didn't have a bright fresh flavor. Sea bass ceviche was okay but they put more of those corn nuts in it and it just ruined the texture and experience having to eat around it. The jumbo prawn came with only 1 prawn cut in half and the texture was flat and soggy. The portions were extremely small and not at all shareable, they claim it's meant to be shared but it's literally the size of a taco bell soft taco. Had the entire meal been around $30-$35 it would have been fine but it was more than double that. Needless to say, do not make my mistake and save your money and go somewhere better unless for some reason you really enjoy overpriced ceviche and burning a hole in your wallet. You literally could walk across the street to Tacos Mexico on taco Tuesday and gotten 55 tacos for what we paid to eat here.
