Opinions de Love & Salt Manhattan Beach
My visit to Russ & Daughters was fantastic. The bagels were fresh and absolutely delicious, packed with flavor. The vibes are classic New York, making the whole experience even better. Definitely a must stop for a great bagel and great atmosphere.
Their Classic Lox bagel with Scallions cream cheese & Onions on Everything bagel toasted was great. The others, like Pretzel bagel, were good but got a little chewy for our taste when it got to room temp. Service was excellent.
Its the best place for breakfast. Their vegan scallion cream cheese is to die for. The service is excellent. I reached a little late but the staff gave me the best customer service without rushing me. The bagels melt in your mouth and their dried mangoes were incredible.
The best bagels ever 🥯 We order the lox one and it was amazing, the staff was very helpful in the moment to order because it was our first time here and we like it so much that we went the next day too The cold brew coffee was so good it can keep you awake for hours 😅 A most try in NYC
Stopped in for a bagel for breakfast on our last day in New York. It was busy l, but not overly so. A gentleman could tell it we were newbies so he helped us out and made some recommendations. We ended up getting an everything bagel with lox and plain cream cheese, we added some capers. Very delicious! Got a freshly squeezed orange juice to wash it down. Great place for a bagel, staff were all great! Thanks so much for breakfast!
Best caviar bagels out there in the city! Russ & Daughters have this very cool option of adding caviar to your bagels, and I am telling you - it is a must try! Besides that, you can always get salmon roe (“the red caviar”) on the side, or even the wasabi infused one. They offer a variety of cream cheese for your bagels (including one with caviar), plenty of bagel types and some very good combinations of ingredients for the pre-made bagels - in case you do not want to build your own. We also tried their organic Irish smoked salmon, which you can get separately- and it was divine! 10/10, quality over everything.
🥯 Russ & Daughters — A Century of Jewish Food Tradition in New York City When exploring New York City, especially the historic neighborhoods of Lower Manhattan, one place that truly feels like stepping back in time is Russ & Daughters. More than just a food shop, this iconic establishment represents over a century of Jewish culinary tradition and family heritage in the city. Russ & Daughters was founded in 1914 by Joel Russ, a Jewish immigrant from Eastern Europe. Originally opened as an appetizing store specializing in smoked fish, herring, and traditional Jewish delicacies, the shop stood out not only for its food but also for its name. At a time when businesses were almost always passed down to sons, Joel Russ proudly included his daughters in the family name, making Russ & Daughters a symbol of progress and family pride. Today, the business is still family-owned and operated, now in its fourth generation. 📍 Location Russ & Daughters is located on Houston Street in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, a neighborhood deeply rooted in immigrant history. The shop is easily accessible and is often included on food-focused walking routes around Soho, Chinatown, and the East Village. 🥯 Popular Menu Items One of the most famous items at Russ & Daughters is the Smoked Salmon (Nova or Gaspe), thinly sliced and incredibly delicate, offering a perfect balance of saltiness and smokiness. Another must-try is the Bagel with Lox and Cream Cheese, a New York classic done to perfection with high-quality ingredients. The shop is also well known for its Herring, available in several styles, including cream sauce and wine sauce. For those with a sweet tooth, traditional Jewish desserts such as Rugelach, Babkas, and Chocolate Halva are extremely popular and make great souvenirs. If visiting the café, dishes like the Smoked Fish Platters and Latkes are also highly recommended. ⏰ Opening Hours • Open daily • Generally from 8:00 AM to early evening Hours may vary slightly depending on the day and holidays, so checking in advance is recommended. 💰 Price Range • Bagels with toppings: approximately USD 10–18 • Smoked fish by weight: varies, but generally USD 30+ per pound • Desserts and sweets: around USD 4–8 Prices are higher than average, but reflect the premium quality and craftsmanship. 🏮 Atmosphere & Experience Walking into Russ & Daughters feels like entering a living museum. The counters are filled with beautifully arranged smoked fish, sweets, and jars, while staff members skillfully slice salmon by hand. The atmosphere is lively yet nostalgic, filled with both locals and visitors who appreciate tradition and authenticity. ✨ Final Thoughts For me, Russ & Daughters is not just a place to eat, but a cultural experience. It tells the story of New York’s immigrant roots through food, family, and tradition. Whether you’re trying it for the first time or returning for a classic bagel and lox, Russ & Daughters offers a timeless taste of New York that’s truly unforgettable.
We arrived before 9am and lucky to get a table. Love the self-serve casual vibe here yet the food is good. We ordered class salmon plain bagel in scallion cream cheese, a Daughter’s Delight poppy bagel in scallion cream cheese, a Metz ball soup and a mushroom soup. Highly recommend the 1/4 lb saber slices (around 8 smaller pieces) and the 1/4 salmon slices (around 4 bigger pieces). Rich, fatty and melts in your mouth. The saber is a bit salty though . We end up buying another bagel, and 2 more soups as take away.
Russ & Daughters on 34th St. in Hudson yards is a new location for a very long established bagel and Schmear restaurant in the Village. New location in Hudson Yards is larger, totally modern and has a lot of indoor seating. The food is excellent as always. A comfortable place to go on a cold and rainy day.
One of NYC’s most iconic spots for smoked fish — and now I fully understand why people love it. I ordered the Daughter’s Delight — which comes with Gaspe Nova smoked salmon + wild Alaskan salmon roe + cream cheese on a bagel. The lox was silky and delicate, with just the right amount of savoriness. The salmon roe added little pops of flavor, and the cream cheese tied everything together so nicely. The bagel itself? I really liked it — not overly chewy, soft in the center, with just enough bite. I can’t say whether it’s the definitive “New York style” (didn’t get to bagel-hop this trip), but for my taste, it was spot on.
We got up early and decided to walk twelve New York blocks in the cool morning air to a place that’s been doing bagels right for 114 years. No tourist traps today, just eating like a local. Russ & Daughters has been a Lower East Side staple since 1914, a family-run institution that’s seen generations line up for smoked fish, caviar, and the kind of bagels that taste like time itself simple, perfect, unpretentious. I went with a plain bagel, toasted to that ideal golden crisp, layered with caviar cream cheese, smoked salmon, and a thin slice of tomato. Elegant and balanced, it’s the kind of bite that reminds you why simplicity endures. Nannette chose the everything bagel and latkes crispy on the edges, soft inside, pure comfort. To wash it down, I tried the beet shrub juice. Earthy, slightly tart, and surprisingly refreshing like something straight from an old-world apothecary turned modern café. It’s one of those places where time slows down, where every bite connects you to over a century of New York mornings.
An expanded larger and more tourist friendly location, compared to the smaller original store. Not to worry though because food quality is the same. The bagels are the best that I had in NYC while I was visiting. Soft and chewy, with rich creamy cream cheese and freshly sliced smoked salmon. Make sure you ask for it to be toasted too. Glorious 😋 Make sure you grab a ticket when you enter, decide what you'd like to order, and when they call your number, go up to the counter and make your order. There's also a lot of Russ & Daughters fun swag on sale so be sure to check that out.
Excellent selection of high quality bagels, sandwiches, and cured/smoked fish. The store is very spacious and accessible. We had the fancy delancy and pastrami Russ and would definitely recommend. The black and white cookie was a little dry for me but the size and style were just right.
Came to try their bagels during my trip. There was a lineup when I went, but it went by pretty fast. I enjoyed the smoked salmon bagel and I liked how you can customize it. Staff was also friendly. There were a few tables for seating inside as well.
Bagels smaller and a bit overpriced than their competition. They are definitely using the fame in their favor and that's ok. The experience was overall ok, but I would go again, a lot of cheaper great bagels around the city. Location is good, eating the bagel with a view to the Bessel
The bagel by itself is really dense. Ordered the horseradish cream cheese but seems to be a wrong order. The price is on the higher side at $17, for the amount of ingredients, I would say it’s lesser than other stores. The coffee (batch brewed) brings out the fishy-ness of the salmon when eaten together. Overall, it’s a decent bagel.
We went to the Russ & Daughters at Hudson Yards. The place is nice and clean, but honestly we just came for the bagel. We got the classic lox and cream cheese — fresh and good, nothing crazy, just solid and exactly what you expect from Russ & Daughters. The line was a bit long, and the prices are definitely on the higher side, but if you’re in the area and you’re craving a smoked salmon bagel, it does the job. Good food, straightforward experience.
Large, bright, clean environment. Once you enter, grab a ticket. When your number is called, walk up to the counter and place your order. I noticed most customers knew what they were getting and they ordered quickly (locals?). The folks working behind the counter are friendly and fast. I ordered two pumpernickel bagels, one with olive spread, the other with (don’t judge) horseradish spread. The bagel were excellent, the spreads good. Would definitely return.
not gonna say it’s my favorite bagel during my stay in nyc if you’re coming for its fame, it indeed has a long history and you can enjoy more than just a bagel 🥯. but if you’re heading for something especially delicious, you might need to lower your expectations.many people say salmon roe is a perfect match but honestly I didn’t get it. i feel like they just add some savory and salty flavors. it’s not bad but given the fact that nyc is full of excellent nova bagel, russ’s price or flavor won’t make it a stand-out.
The staff is friendly and they offer more kinds of fish (sable, kippered salmon, yellowfin tuna, sturgeon, whitefish, gravalax, pastrami cured, gaspe nova, Irish smoked , Scottish smoked etc.) and unique cream cheeses (caviar, goat cheese, horseradish cream cheeses). I got a sesame bagel with gravalax and plain cream cheese. The bagel itself wasn't particularly good, a bit too dense and quite firm. The cream cheese and gravalax were quite good, although the portion of the gravalax could have been more generous. A good place to visit if you want to try the unique offerings of fish and cream cheeses.
